Waffling over Coffee [Goblin]
« on: February 14, 2018, 07:14:22 am »
After a long, frustrating day of filming going out for any reason had been the last thing on Maddy’s mind, but leave it to the Aedolian chat to talk about pancakes and waffles while he was starving. A person would have had to have the willpower of a saint to resist the overwhelming craving to indulge in a late evening meal of syrupy goodness! That or be too high to move from the couch, which could have easily been Maddock Broderick on any given day, but he was depressingly not flying on any kind of euphoric high.

He didn’t know why or how, but there it was – Maddy was stone cold sober.

At least that meant he could actually do something other than wallow in a drug-induced daze. He heard doing that was bad for you. So he ignored his pills and put on something low key cute since he was going out in public. Hip-hugging jeans and a soft pink off the shoulder shirt made for super casual and very chic.

Throwing a book and his tablet into his messenger bag and putting it over his shoulder, Maddy headed out to the best place to grab waffles – AHOW.

Being an off hour for most major meals, getting shown to a table was almost immediate. Honestly there weren’t a great many people in the restaurant at all. It was kind of perfect, because that meant it was relatively quiet as well. Maddy was able to pull out his book and read without distraction while waiting on his stack of cinnamon waffles smothered with strawberry syrup and whip cream.

Almost without distraction, because there was one very interesting person just a few tables away. The man was huge, stacked as one might say, and definitely grizzled. Maddy could already imagine what a guy like that did for a living, what with the hardened battle-scarred look and muscles for days. He was perfectly happy to start inventing things about such a sexy tank. Maybe he was a Pilot? Definitely a military man with that body and those kinds of scars, nothing else was that dangerous, was it?

No, he didn’t think so.

His fantasies were put on pause when his food arrived, and Maddy busied himself with the task of reading between bites of delicious waffles. He tried to put the hunky gentleman out of his mind, because honestly, if the man was just drinking a coffee he’d be long gone by the time Maddy was finished with his meal. Except when he pushed his empty plate aside, Mr. Hunk was still sitting a few tables away like bait in a trap. A very pleasant trap, but that was still what it felt like. How was someone like him to resist trying to get a taste, however small, of that?

Maddy let his eyes flicker down to the man’s hands, they were large, strong, and calloused, but most importantly there wasn’t a ring anywhere suggesting he was taken. Good, that meant those rough hands were available for squeezing squirmy hips. It was a shame about the man’s fashion sense, ugh, flannel, really? Well, it was a good thing he didn’t need the man dressed for anything.

It was odd that he was just sitting there all alone with nothing but a coffee all this time.

Biting his lip, he picked up his com and started texting in the chat about the good-looking fellow taunting him without so much as looking in his direction or a single word spoken, and as usual the chat didn’t fail to deliver. Just go crawl under his table indeed! With a little encouragement from Aunty NIH, Maddy tucked his com and book back into his bag, slinging it casually over his shoulder as he picked up his own coffee and headed over to Mr. Hunk’s table.

“Hey there Handsome, you looked lonely sitting over here all by yourself. Want some company?” A flirtatious smile flashed as he unabashedly raked his eyes over him now that he was much closer, and nearly purred when all he saw was more of what had attracted him in the first place. Rugged, muscled, scarred and absolutely fucking edible.

It was Tuesday night and that usually was a good thing, fantastic even if things were going well. It was a Finley day. But, things had not gone well. The same time he called every Tuesday and Thursday to speak to his daughter and as was the case more often than not he was denied the right to do so. "She has homework," they would say or "she's out playing with her friends." Tonight it was "she has a dance recital." Funny how he was never invited to come see her too or be a part of her life beyond what little tidbit was required of her guardians to allow him.

He was too tired to cook and too awake to just go to bed so Halvard had dragged himself off to the AHOW a few blocks from his lonely little apartment. The way things often went in his life the staff knew to expect him at least 3-4 times a month and that was only if it was a good month.  There were times where he was coming twice a week for months straight. Tuesdays and Thursdays were either really good days or really bad ones.

They sat him down in his usual table with his usual cup of black coffee, a refill pot at his elbow should he need it. Truth be told he almost never did. Halvard would sit there and stew, nursing his lone cup until it went cold. Sometimes he would order something and sometimes not, regardless he always tipped well and left without causing trouble.

Tonight he was engrossed in a card game on his phone. He was losing badly but continued to idly flip different cards in mild hopes of winning. Halvard barely registered the figure approaching him until they were suddenly speaking. He twitched slightly at the intrusion of personal silence before ever so slowly dragging his gaze up to stare at the petite man with his one good eye.

The stranger wanted to...join him? This was certainly rare though perhaps not so new. Was it a dare? His eye darted about his surroundings expecting to see more hooligans peeking out of a booth to giggle and chuckle over the man with monster scars and the unlucky soul sent to go talk to him. There was no one though.

Halvard shrugged and nodded with his head to the open chair. If the man wanted to stay then fine he could stay. He did not expect any trouble from him and he certainly was small enough that if he was looking to start something Halvard could handle him. Curiosity and perhaps a touch of loneliness invited him to stay longer as Halvard sat back and straight. His scarred lips pursed close together as closed the screen on his com and took in the sight before him. The boy, (was he a boy?) was rather cute in a very delicate and adorable way. Ten years ago he would have been Halvard's type to a T but now, well times change and Halvard wasn't exactly a winner himself.

"Got to be a case of some real boredom if you decided to come sit over here," he joked gruffly, his voice dry and rumbley in a way that made it hard to determine if he was growling or laughing. "Coffee?" Halvard drained his cup and poured himself a second while he nodded to the clean but upturned mug still sitting by the carafe. Offering was the least he could do and if for only a moment it gave him something to say or do to make himself feel less awkward and out of place. Most people tended to just leave him to his own devices. It was not every day a pretty little thing decided to mosey on hop to him as if he was the hottest Pilot in existence.

Maddy didn’t hesitate to slide into the chair across from Mr. Hunk when a nod of permission was directed that way. The flirty smile only grew more impish at the suggestion that boredom must have played a big part in why he’d come over. Although even more importantly, that voice, sent little tingles through the small demon.

Oh sweet cheese and crackers had Maddy stumbled on to something here. The stud seemed confused by his approach, but he was ticking so many of his boxes right now.

Tall? Check.

Muscles? Check.

Rugged? Check.

Voice to die for? Fucking check!

“Please.” He bit his bottom lip, red eyes flickering to the coffee pot when it was offered. At least having the cup would give some pretense that he was there for something other than a pure desire to have those rough hands squeezing his thighs while their owner whispered naughty things in Maddy’s ear with that lovely gravel-growl.

“Well it was a boring and lonely evening, yeah, but then I happened to notice there was a very good-looking fellow a few tables over from me and would have been a fool to not at least try to say hello. I’m Maddock, by the way, but most people just call me Maddy.” Delicate fingers brushed through his silver hair as it was pushed out of his eyes, they were bright red as they studied the man across from them with appreciation.

"And so you decided to settle and come sit with me," he replied dryly as he deftly poured a second cup of coffee and slid it across the table in front of Maddock. The bowl of little creamers and sugar soon followed to be closer to the other man's reach. It was not as if Halvard needed them. He blew gently on his coffee before taking a sip.

If he noticed the way Maddock was eyeing him though he said nothing on the matter. He knew he was an unnatural sight with his scarred face, tattered ear, and milky-white eye. The military life was not easy for those that served in the line of fire and Halvard had faced his share of demons and monsters over the years.

"My name's Halvard. It's nice to meet you, Maddy. Did you," he paused, elongating the word as he tried to think of something to say, "already eat?"

“Excuse me good sir, but I do not settle for anything less than what I want, and what I want is to sit and talk with you, because I think you’re interesting.” Maddy turned his cup before plucking up a creamer and pouring it into the steaming coffee, his voice was still light and teasing. “Before I spotted you I was just going to go home and sleep.”

Every bit of that was truthful, those had been his plans and he did find him very interesting. Mostly from a raw sexual attraction level at this point, but that was always the best place to start, right? Of course it was.

“Oooh, Halvard, I like it. Fun to say.” Maddy practically purred the name, putting emphasis on it. Not a typical name, sounded strong and unique. He tucked that name away for later, because he was going to have a lot of fun screaming it. “Ah, I did eat, yes. I noticed you when I came in, but when I saw you were still mulling over here with nothing but a cup of coffee I couldn’t resist introducing myself. I don’t run into such attractive men at waffle houses often, you understand, and definitely not all on their lonesome.”

Halvard made a noncommittal grunt in reply. So pretty boy Maddy was a sex worker. Great. He wouldn't be the first prostitute trying to prey on the lone wolf card with the marred face. Some had been lucky enough to win those credits for their efforts too. But, no, not tonight. Halvard was not interested in a quick one-off in some hotel room before crawling home tired and even more alone.

"You use that line on all the men you try to pick up in waffle houses? I don't expect you get much business that way," he commented with a slight tilt of his head. "Listen, I've had a really long day. So let's cut to the chase. I'm sure you're a lovely guy but if you're looking for a paid-for good time, I'm not interested."

He scrubbed at his face tiredly with his hand while sighing heavily. "If you really want to talk though then I'm sorry and if I haven't insulted you then by all means stay and talk. You don't need to keep trying to flatter me though. I know what I look like. I don't need it sugar-coated," he huffed grumpily. Maybe the mouse would scurry or maybe it would stay, either way Halvard had said his piece and he would be content with whichever way the pieces lay.

For one terrible moment Maddy froze, packet of sugar in his hand as he prepared to dump it in his coffee, a very deer-in-the-headlights look coming over his face. The dude thought he was a hooker trying to proposition him?

Wow.

Most people would have been highly offended by such an assumption, but as Maddy began to breathe again, calmly dumping the sugar into his mug he only smirked, eyes flashing with nothing short of amusement as he stirred and then promptly forgot about his coffee.

“I have never used that line before in an attempt to pick up a handsome stud like you, nope, that’s a Maddy one hundred percent original right there just for you.” Maddy leaned over the table, putting his chin in his hands as he gazed across the table at Halvard with a cheeky grin. “To the chase then? I was absolutely looking for a good time, but I only get paid for sex when they’re filming it, and I don’t see any cameras. This is just me having fun on my own time, handsome, sorry, but the flattery is genuine. You seem so surprised, and that just makes me a little sad.”

Halvard apparently was not used to getting attention from people wanting to jump his bones, or was simply hypercritical of himself and obsessively self-conscious about the perceived faults with his looks – all nonsense, of course. Maddy saw nothing wrong with the scars across that side of his face, or the milky eye that sat blindly in its socket, and even the mangled ear didn’t faze him. The man was handsome and built, the scars just made him more interesting.

“Well, since you know what I do, how about you big guy? I’m guessing something dangerous and exciting. Military?” Maddy finally took a sip of his coffee, looking at Halvard intently over his mug, his smile was only somewhat subdued now that being ravaged in the alley out back seemed off the table.

It wasn't like he didn't have days where he just wasn't feeling up to anything. Besides, wanting something and not getting it only made Maddy want it more. Right now that was Halvard.

'Sure you haven't. I KNEW it,' Halvard thought acidly to himself. He pursed his lips tightly, crossing his arms over his chest as he did so. When he had been a younger man he had been the pursuant and thought nothing of his looks. He had used to love to tell the stories of how he had earned each and every slash but since he had been forced into settling down. Now he just wanted to be left alone. He was not a charity case.

Yet, as he continued to listen he realized his own mistake and felt the warmth of embarrassment creeping up his neck. He had been close but that only counted in grenades and not much else. Halvard had insulted the other man, but still he stayed and was attempting to continue conversation. Either this Maddy wasn't ready to give up yet on a quick fling or he genuinely wanted to stay and talk. Somehow Halvard could not help but think it was the former as opposed to the latter.

Sighing he glanced at the clock on the far wall and gave in. The large man did not relish the idea of crawling into bed to stare at the ceiling for another four to six hours cursing his former in-laws until he fell asleep. Conversation it was then!

"Military, yeah. Wouldn't call it all that exciting these days. Just routine work here in Margad. Did you," he elongated the last word searching for something to say before finishing weakly, "have a good day today?"

Maddock would never claim that he was a great judge of character or particularly good at figuring people out. Typically he just operated under the assumption that offering up his body for sex would get the results he usually sought. Most guys would have jumped at the blatant invitation and Maddy would have been pushed up against the back wall of the building by now. Quick and dirty sex was his bread and butter; it got him just enough attention and contact to keep him going when he was feeling particularly worthless.

Those men that did reject his offers generally also told him to get lost at the same time. After all, if they weren’t interested in what Maddy had to offer why would they want him around? Easy answer was that they wouldn’t and that was what he had come to expect.

That’s why Maddy was currently sipping his coffee and burying his confusion as he kept his attention focused on the man across the table. Why did Halvard want him to stay and talk? Well, it wasn’t exactly that either. The man said he could stay and chat if he wanted, not that he wanted him to. So Halvard didn’t actually want him there, but he didn’t want him to not stay either – which was even weirder, because it was kind of obvious the scarred giant wasn’t used to or very good at small talk.

“Oh I don’t know. I’m sure it is still pretty interesting working for the military. You guys are the top brass of society and all that. Well, after Pilots, I mean. Obviously.” Maddy ducked his head slightly, looking into his coffee and rubbing his index finger against the side of the mug contemplatively as he tried to decide what to really say about his day. “I wouldn’t call it a good day. It was a filming day, so a work day. Who really likes work days? I mean, just because it’s porn doesn’t mean work is super fun, you know? People don’t stop and think about how hard it actually is to produce; they just want their spank material. Not that I blame them! It just…yeah.”

Maddy teetered off awkwardly, flashing a sheepish smile before taking another sip of his coffee.

Halvard shrugged noncommittally at Maddock's assessment of his career. A job was a job and his "glory" days of serving in Samariel were now behind him. Here in Margad things were simpler and almost boring for a man who had lived a fast=paced do or die lifestyle. While the other man continued talking though, Halvard sipped on his coffee and mulled over his words.

"I would imagine it's very difficult to produce a finished piece. They probably make you do a lot of reshoots and retakes to get the "full immersion" experience for the buyers, yeah?" he replied complete with air quotes. "Sounds rather exhausting and probably takes a lot of the fun of the act itself out of it. I'm glad it wasn't a horrible day for you? Middling isn't great but could be a lot worse, yeah?"

He shifted in his seat nervously even as he rested his elbows fully on the table and cupped his coffee in both hands before him. "You said you ate right? What did you get?" Halvard's lips twitched in a grimace of a smile as he grasped at straws to further conversation. It had been a while since he had to genuinely try at this kind of stuff. Most of the conversations he actually had cared about were with an adorable six year old little girl, hardly what one would call scintillating topics.

Oh good, he got it. Maddy found himself nodding slightly as he listened to Halvard talk in that delicious rumbling growl of his. So many people thought his life was all glamour and fun all the time, but they had no idea how much it sucked to have sex professionally on camera. Sure amateurs could get away with sloppy work, but not actors like him. Starting up and stopping over and over again while getting the right angles and shots and expressions was exhausting and not fun at all.

Nobody had a good time filming professional porn. At least not while the cameras were still rolling, when things were done with actual work his co-stars often liked to finish themselves up in much more fun ways, but that was a whole different can of worms.

“Oh yeah, I’ll take an average day at work over a bad one any day.” Bad days at work were really bad, but he didn’t need to talk about that. He was here for a mood lift, not a downer.

“Cinnamon waffles with strawberry syrup and whip cream. It was probably more dessert than dinner, but I had a craving.” Maddy chuckled softly before gesturing at Hal’s mug. “What about you? That coffee is all I’ve noticed come to your table all the time I’ve been in here. Did you get something earlier or just not hungry tonight? I figured a big guy like you would have an appetite to match.”

"Eh life is short. Dessert should always come fist. On truly uncertain ones, have it twice," he replied with a gentle chuckle. "At least that's what my mam used to always say. "Don't think I've ever tried that combination before though. Cinnamon goes with strawberries?"

Halvard quirked a brow skeptically at Maddy before shrugging his shoulders. "Not really hungry. I suppose coffee is meal enough for me. Terrible I know, coming to a waffle house for only a cup of coffee." He shrugged again, finding it difficult to continue conversation now that he was out of things to say.

"Depends on who you ask, I think it goes great - sweet with a hint of spice. Mmm." Maddy generally went for chocolate over fruit flavors when he was craving sweets, but for some reason he had really wanted strawberries today. Not that it really mattered, either way his hankering for pancakes had landed him here talking to Halvard, so he was counting it as a win.

The conversation seemed to be drying up all too rapidly. His table companion seemed rather shy and awkward in his presence. Watching such a huge, grizzled man stumble over his social interaction with a stranger was kind of adorable.

"Eh, not really terrible. It is a nice place, the coffee is good too. I like the brand they serve and it is way cheaper than Manolins." Maddy sucked his bottom lip into his mouth and gently chewed it as he started to fumble for what to really say. Usually there wasn't a whole lot of talking when he approached handsome strangers.

Plus Halvard was clearly a man of few words.

Halvard shrugged in response. "Coffee is coffee I suppose. Definitely cheaper though like you said. I've ever really thought much about it beyond that. Nice to have a place serving it still in the evening though. I suppose that's my main reason for always coming back."

The large man sighed and shrugged again. Conversation really wasn't his forte. He was saved from saying more though as his phone bleeped at him, flashing green repeatedly until he swiped across the screen.

"Well Maddock it was nice chatting with you. I'm afraid I need to be going though. Early morning for work and it's late for me. Thanks for the company though." Halvard smiled weakly as he rose to his feet and offered a wave. "Maybe we can run into each other again sometime."

He mentally kicked himself for sounding and acting so awkwardly even as he strode away. Halvard paid his bill quickly and was about to take off when impulse gave him pause. Grabbing up a napkin he quickly scrawled out a number before catching a passing waitor's attention and begging him to pass it off to Maddock. He really had enjoyed the other man's company and if he hadn't scared him away then maybe the could do it again some time when he wasn't so tired and low-spirited. Probably nothing would come of it but at least he knew he tried. That was something, right? Halvard didn't wait to find out, instead leaving to hurry his way home. He had been truthful about that too. He really did need to catch some Z's before dragging himself back out of bed in the early hours the next day.

Conversation had dried up depressingly quickly. Maddy could have scrambled to attempt to keep it flowing, but he wasn’t sure if he should try to force it. Neither of them seemed to know what to talk about. Maybe if he had more time to prepare he could have thought of something worth talking about, even a guy of few words liked talking about something.

Maddy plastered on his best smile when Halvard began to give what seemed to be very generalized placations. The kind of things you said when you wanted to get out of a social situation as quickly and politely as possible.

“Oh yes, maybe we will bump into each other sometime.” Somehow Maddy doubted it. “It was nice meeting you, Halvard. Have a pleasant night.”

His fingers wiggled in a flirty wave, even as the other man turned his back and seemed to hurry out of the place like he couldn’t wait to leave. Well, maybe Maddy had been completely wrong to approach him in the first place. Not everyone was into small, peppy men. As confident as he was in his adorableness, it wasn’t for everyone.

Maddy sighed deeply and looked down at his mostly finished coffee, raising it and draining the last of the cup before contemplating going home alone and empty-handed. A waiter approached him with a napkin and he tilted his head curiously as it was explained that Halvard had left it for him.

It was a phone number. A timid grin split his lips – maybe the night wasn’t a total bust after all.
