The Society of Lunar Exploration

The Society of Lunar Exploration is an unaffiliated research team spanning several systems for the purpose of discovering, documenting, and researching moons. S.O.L.E. was founded by the Felion family in honor of the late Cen Felion who was known for his passion towards astronomy. The likeness of Cen was reconstructed from research videos he created throughout his life, and was converted into an electronic consciousness that drives every expedition ship S.O.L.E. deploys.

There are several expedition teams within the Society, each with a designation correlating to famous star constellations. Within these twelve designations, there are about 160 ships. Each contains a varying number of crewmembers depending on how long the intended expeditions would take. Regardless, each ship contains the following:
I. Three Senior Expedition Coordinators who act as the highest authority among the research team. They are second-highest authority among the ship crew. Their job is to make sure the expedition goes as it should - that the ship remains on its assigned course and schedule - as well as making executive decisions during unexpected events. Senior Expedition Coordinators are required to change ships after each expedition, and must complete a minimum of sixteen lunar expeditions as a Junior Expedition Coordinator.
II. Between one and four Junior Expedition Coordinators. Essentially job-shadowing the Senior Coordinators, Juniors carry a higher rank of respect than most crew but still must defect to Senior Coordinators and Ship Commanders.
III. Two Ship Commanders are in charge of the expedition ship itself, running the crew and carrying the responsibility of ensuring the ship runs as it should. Ship Commanders are highest authority of the ship crew, and second-highest among the research team. They are essentially the Captains.
IV. Twelve Research Directors are in charge of the research teams that divide into groups upon landing on an undocumented lunar surface. The Directors guide the groups in their studies and are required to have several years of education and firsthand experience in conducting research.
V. Forty-eight to sixty Researchers who conduct the actual research and sample collections on behalf of the Society. There is a wide range of experiences and educations within the team of Researchers.
VI. Standard ship crew. This includes medics, engineers, and everything in-between that work to keep the ships running and the rest of the crew alive.

Bases and HQ: The Society does not contain a central base of headquarters, and is instead comprised of several lunar outposts and planetary embassies. Embassies are always manned, providing information and services to both employees and inquirers. Outposts may or may not be manned, depending on the location. Several outposts are abandoned due to poor atmospheric conditions, have been deemed unsafe, or simply a lack of reason to be there that is usually found on lifeless moons. Other outposts have several different teams coexisting to research and explore the lunar surfaces. And still more contain only a skeleton crew of robots and machines which record weather and atmospheric fluctuations. The larger and older outposts tend to contain educational facilities for training new employees about such things as which plants will or won't kill them.

Funding and Support: S.O.L.E. is a private corporation, funded primarily by planet-based organizations who wish to receive research on their associated moons without having to directly run the expeditions. S.O.L.E. does not sell or otherwise give out research to companies and individuals who seek to make profit by exploiting or otherwise threatening the lunar environment. This has brought them to be at odds with several teams who have wished to colonize a moon but have been unable to attain necessary information about how to safely do so. In more than a few cases, security breaches and outright terrorism has struck outposts and embassies as result.

Education Affiliations: Although responsible for expedition and exploration missions, the Society works in cooperation with several archaeological teams who handle the recovery and security of artifacts. The Society also works alongside several universities, academies, and institutes to spread knowledge of moons. A portion of the Society's educational division provides guided "field trips" to stabilized  lunar outposts.
