New Day, New Medic [Flakeblood!]
« on: September 16, 2012, 06:19:05 pm »
Everything was finally set up - as in, his large heating lamps were finally installed and on, causing the tiny med bay to warm by a good five degrees to start with. Curled up on a stern metal chair beneath one of these large rectangular lamps, basking in the orange glow, was the new medic - Bjarte. Very clearly an alien by way of his tail, large ears, and unusual prehensile ‘horns’, the gray skinned creature was just as unusual for his tiny stature - a full two feet shorter than most others on board the Puke Juice.

This solar system was full of giants regardless, this ship just had larger-than-average morons in his opinion. Feeling marginally better now that his form was warming up, he was quietly going about the tedious task of filing away all of his small medical instruments - aside from Ari, he’d not made a point of meeting any of the crew. If they needed his attention, they could cart their huge asses down here to see him. He was going to avoid the frigid ship whenever possible - socializing was at the very bottom of his to-do list, somewhere below ‘jumping into the next available star’.

The halls looked a lot wavier today, or perhaps it was all in his head. Or his vision, whichever. Llyr couldn't believe something had come down on him that hard. He was generally built sturdier than the average human, and could take punches and random stabbings pretty well. Hm, should he have hired himself off as muscle instead? No, he really had no fighting skills to speak of.

His poor reflexes were probably the reason he was now wobbly making his way down the corridors to the medical bay where, apparently, the medic had finally settled in. Llyr certainly hoped so. He was getting a massive headache from... whatever is was that had smashed him upside the head. Others maintained that it was debris from the little ship they had been taking apart. Someone had stupidly left a piece dangling loose, so that when Llyr started shifting the parts below it, it had fallen and hit him.

He didn't buy that. Someone had to have hit him purposely. No way gravity could have as much force as a careless coworker. ...Or an enraged lover. One or the other.

Regardless, it was incredibly hard for him to think to deeply in his state, so to the medical bay he went. Luckily, he'd been able to deny his need for any escort and leave before the real symptoms had started in. He was starting to see little spots in his vision and everything.

He slowly slid his dark body around a corner and saw the door he needed in the hall before him.

"Finally," he murmured.

He rubbed a long, delicate hand along the side of his effeminate face, the other arm across his torso in a comforting self-hug. He reached the door and removed his arm hug to let himself in. He carefully put one foot in at a time, lowering his head a bit to fit in the door frame without injuring himself yet again. He should have removed his platform sandals, but it would have made only a small difference. Besides, he really did enjoy wearing them.

For a moment after he entered the room, Llyr didn't notice anyone. Was the new medic off doing something else? Before he could begin to imagine the terror that was waiting hours with a large headache, he saw movement from the corner of his eye. Thinking it might have been the spot in his vision playing tricks on him, he removed the hand from the side of his face and looked down, focusing his blind-seeming blue eyes to notice a small... lizard thing.

Well, like he hadn't seen odder? The lizard, for he didn't know what else to classify it as, never having met any other of his species, was quite short. No wonder Llyr had missed him before. He thought he'd had to look down at people before. This man—or woman?—was as tall as a human child.

He hadn't seen this person around before. Was he the new medic? Considering the size of the medical bay, which was small, Llyr figured he had to have been spotted by now.

"Pardon me." The spots were in full force, dancing across his vision and making it hard to focus. "I don't suppose you could check me for signs of a concussion?"

…He wasn’t sure if this should be really funny or really sad. He was stuck somewhere between the two as he sat calmly in his seat, watching the large…whatever it was look around the room in confusion. For fuck’s sake, he was small, but he’d never had somebody completely overlook him before. Instead of speaking up, he just let the great big thing flounder about until it eventually noticed him, at which poin the continued to give Llyr a very flat emotionless stare.

Well at least it had something similar to manners.

“I suppose I can.” Was his dry reply, before he finally uncurled himself from the seat and stepped out across the floor on dainty paws. His locomotion was smooth and elegant, but completely swallowed up by his overlarge clothing - never mind though, he doubted anything in this solar system would be perceptive enough to even notice something so subtle. At least this one wasn’t a human - anything human reminded him of Ari, which made him want to stab people in their soft fleshy parts.
But enough about hurting people, he actually had to do his job this time.
Amazing that somebody should come to him with an injury, rather than to just irritate him.

“Alright you oversized fish-thing, bend down so I can actually reach your head would you?” Staring up at Llyr, the deadpan medic waved him down with a small hand, his tail curled up behind him idly. Seriously, he was going to have to invest in a stepladder or something…they just kept getting bigger, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to climb up people just because nature went on some freaky gigantism kick.

It—He? His voice was deeper than expected—looked even smaller close up, and having to look almost directly down wasn't doing much for Llyr's head, never mind his vision. He heard the command the little lizard gave, along with the insult, but he was too dizzy to argue. He carefully backed up to the nearby wall and slouched against it before sliding down, both hands on the vertical surface to slow his descent.

Even sitting flat on the floor, he was fairly tall. He had never measured, but he estimated himself to still be almost three feet. However, he was shorter than the medic now, so reaching his head should pose no problem.

"Technically, a warm-blooded amphibian," he corrected.

It wasn't important, but he felt the need to say it anyway. Odd that most species should think him some sort of fish just because he was born in water and preferred it to mate. Maybe people simply didn't study ancient animal species as much as they used to? He had never bothered to ask.

Llyr sighed and closed his eyes, rubbing at the side of his face again. The little spots had turned into blotches, and even when he closed his eyes, they burst like bright, colorful fireworks on the insides of his lids. He hated injuries. That was one reason he never chose to fight and instead negotiated or flirted his way out of trouble.

He wasn't really sure whether he was supposed to tell the medic the reason for the injury or not. Was it really pertinent in this situation? Besides, his story would likely clash with what everyone else said, since he was holding out on the intentional-head-bashing-by-crazy-ex-lover excuse.

So, instead of giving some far-fetched reason for his injury, Llyr simply pointed to the area of his head that the pain was radiating from and then attempted to relax. His blank eyes stared at the far wall as he tried, unsuccessfully, to banish the splashes of color overtaking his sight.

Hm, well, apparently whatever was wrong with the overlarge thing was bad enough that it had to use the wall in order to get into a sitting position. Lack of balance and coordination, then…
Moving forward to take advantage of the new vantage point, Bjarte readied himself for the task of touching another living thing. A big deal, when you had hands such as his.

“Right, oversized frog-thing then. My mistake.”
He snorted then, and grabbed Llyr’s head none too gently, turning it this way and that to better his own angle of inspection. What Llyr would not be privy to was the amount of ambient information Bjarte was skimming from his own biological processes - everything from body temperature to blood pressure.
“It would seem you lofty cranium got in the way of something blunt and heavy.”

Stepping back, he shook out his hands as if there were something unpleasant on them. Really, he was just trying to disperse the uncomfortable tingling sensation he was left with.
“You’ve got a mild concussion. You’re an amphibian, as you said, and your body will likely heal easily enough. As you may know, sleep is ill-advised, and in your case you should stay vertical - no laying down for at least thirteen hours. There is the problem of swelling - your skin is not as…pliable as one would like. You can get an icepack, or I can cut open the rather large lump on your skull. Either will reduce the built up pressure, so it’s up to you.”
He shrugged, entirely nonchalant about the entire event.
As far as he was concerned, he was here to keep the crew from dying, not provide wonderful bedside service.

A small smirk appeared on his face. The little guy was persistent, he'd give him that. Llyr's good cheer quickly disappeared when his head was grabbed and moved though.

"Ah—! Ow..." Closing his eyes seemed to help him focus on pushing the pain back. "No. It was obviously something soft and light that split my head."

Whoops. There came his sarcasm. He really did detest pain. Once his head was released, he tried to listen to what the little sadist was trying to tell him, but it was so hard to concentrate.

"No sleep. Got it. Wait, you gonna cut it right here?"

He knew she should have tried harder to understand. His brain was taking a while to process what was really meant, but the only conclusion he was getting was: less pressure equals less pain. That was good, wasn't it? Doctors had cutting tools, and he would feel better. He should get that done before he fell over while navigating the hallways. Wouldn't that be embarrassing.

"Now is better than later." At least, he supposed so.

“Nothing split your head, and that’s the problem.”
The sarcasm seemed ineffectual in rattling Bjarte’s already prickly demeanor - it didn’t make him any more or less unpleasant. With his skinny arms now crossed, he watched the large amphibian try and get it’s bearings, Bjarte’s prehensile tail slowly curling and uncurling behind him.
“No sleep, and you need to stay vertical.” He corrected blandly. He’d keep the thing here if it was necessary - 13 hours of unwanted company wouldn’t kill him, he supposed.
“…You’re in the med bay. Where else would I cut it? In the mess hall?”

On a sigh, he rolled his unusual amber eyes toward the bleak ceiling. Why did it have to be medical knowledge he adapted to so quickly? There was so much…‘interaction’ necessary with this job. Turning away from Llyr, he padded along on dainty paws to one of the metallic walls not covered with equipment. Hitting a sleek button, a medical cot slid out and adjusted itself to support weight.
“Get your froggy ass over here and sit down.”
Moving now over to his work station, he rolled up his sleeves and began to wash his small hands thoroughly.
Now is better than later, indeed.

Oh ho, so the little lizard had some spunk too. He'd better get his ass moving then. Doctor's orders and all.

"Dear me, not the mess hall. Ykan would hit me for that. ...Again." He muttered the last part.

Llyr pushed against the wall in order to get his feet back underneath his rather tall and lanky body. His sandals hindered him a bit, but he eventually stood up completely. He carefully moved to the cot that had come from the wall, plopping onto it in a much less dignified manner than his movements earlier that day.

"No sleeping, no laying down," he repeated to himself.

One of his hands hovered over his head-bump before he decided against touching it. There was enough pain the last time. Instead, he watched the little lizard sanitizing himself.

Rather small hands now clean, even up his arms, he seemed ready. He’d had to clip his sleeves out of the way though, but his forearms proved to be just as skinny as the rest of him. His face pretty bland, as usual, he pulled out a small kit, and once unfolded, it revealed a variety of scalpels. Now he always had some on him, but those were hardly sanitary enough to use for actual medical practice. They were more for big oafish creatures that thought he was helpless due to his unusually small size.
Walking back over to Llyr, he took a moment to stare up at his patient with all the humor of a mortician.
“…you are so absurdly tall.”
He sighed heavily and set the scalpel set down on the edge of the cot. He then climbed up next to Llyr, picked it up, and stood. Hm, well…this wasn’t a good angle either, but it was better than being completely unable to reach his patient’s head.

He took a pretty firm hold of the back of Llyr’s head with one hand, the other now equipped with an extremely sharp scalpel.
“Alright well hold still, because-”
He sliced the bump open mid-sentence.
“-this is going to hurt.”
Totally deadpan and straight faced, he wasn’t the least bit apologetic. He’d not even used any sort of numbing agent.

While trying to watch the Doctor's every movement—something insanely difficult while his eyesight kept going fuzzy—Llyr did manage to finally catch the fluidity with which the smaller man moved. It wasn't as though he hadn't seen other species with graceful movements, but those were sparse. Further, most of those species moved more like predators. Smooth, graceful, but powerful and lethal. Coiled muscle.

He always thought it detracted from the pure elegance that was to be had if the movements were softer, gentler, and dancer-like. Suppleness and curves. It was the curves his people had, that he had. It was why he couldn't, or maybe wouldn't, become a fighter. He had seen few species like this, and even fewer humans. He blamed that partly on the job though. He wasn't exactly attending any extravagant and high-class performances. Not only were there none nearby, he couldn't afford it.

The doctor commented on his height, but Llyr was eying the scalpel now held in his hand. All his effort was for naught, however, since the little lizard moved up onto the cot and took hold of some dreadlocks. The sharp, slicing pain that ran along his head immediately afterward cut off any coherent thoughts about anything other than his stinging scalp.

"Mother of pearl!" He grabbed either side of his head, though he was careful not to go anywhere near the used-to-be bump.

A spurt of dark red and sickly yellow-white flowed from the wound before it began closing itself. He felt as the skin around the area began a slight secretion of a clear, sticky substance to help bind the wound together. He moaned. How he detested pain.

"Towel?" he whimpered. He wanted to wipe off the blood and such that came from the bump before it got trapped in his clear scab.

Bjarte calmly shifted to one side, avoiding the mini-geyser of bodily fluids he’d just released. Anatomy. What a curiously disgusting thing.
Releasing those dreadlocks, he arched an eyebrow down at the much larger, whimpering amphibian.
“You baby.”
All the same, his long tail unfurled and reached for the table, easily plucking up a folded cloth with it’s prehensile tip. With ease he brought the hand towel over, switched it with the scalpel, and began to dab at the blood in a somewhat gentler manner.
He even gave Llyr a soft pat on the back of his poor damaged head.
“I think you’re going to survive.”

He took offense to that assessment of his pain tolerance, but an outraged gasp was the only response he could give at the moment. Huh. Perhaps he was rather lacking in this area. It didn't usually matter, but during times like these, he was reminded how useless he'd be when truly injured.

At least the little sadist was being gentle now. With most of the pain fading, leaving only a dull throb, Llyr felt himself relax from his tensed position. He resolved to clean up as soon as he was able; he didn't like the sticky feeling of a wound.

"Well, I'd certainly hope so. It would say something rather pitiable about us both if I died from something such as this."

A long, luxurious cleaning wouldn't go amiss for his mood, either. Even if he was brash before, the lizard obviously held some compassion to offer small comforts after the ordeal. Llyr felt he ought to at least try to reign in his automatic insults.

He sighed. "...Thank you." The spots from his vision were disappearing, after all.

Far from offended, Bjarte actually graced Llyr with one of his rare grins. He had finished cleaning the blood and…well, whatever it was this creature’s body had secreted as well. Now he observed the clear fluid with mild interest as it began to naturally close up the wound, the towel again in his tail and being tossed into some pull out draw designated as ‘biohazard’ material.
Not one to linger in the touchy-feely department for a number of reasons, Bjarte stepped back and left the large amphibian to himself.

“Head wounds can be insidious things. A mild bump now, and then you wake up dead. So I’d suggest keeping your cranium out of the way of any blunt objects from now on.”
Hopping off the bed easily, he went to stand under one of his heating lamps, taking a moment to place the scalpel into the high powered sanitizing machine on the metallic desk.
At the thanks, his unusual eyes flickered back over to his ‘patient’.
“You’re welcome. I could feel your pain ebb as soon as I released the pressure. I’m glad my hunch worked.”
He left that last tidbit hanging in the air, returning to his task at hand with a mild smirk.

Nobody said he was a master of the anatomy of all creatures, after all. This was his first time dealing with androgynous, exceedingly tall, land dwelling amphibian humanoids.

"I hadn't really planned on continuing. If the threat of death wasn't enough to deter me, the pain certainly would be." Oddly enough, he hadn't had many head injuries before. He noticed most doorways or other objects low enough to run into, and most other sentient species aimed lower. It was easier for them to reach.

The response to his thanks was slightly surprising, but he was glad for it. There was nothing more awkward than when someone blew off or refused to accept the little thanks he was willing to give.
Llyr was glad his hunch had worked as well. But, wait...

"Hunch?"
Once the thought hit him, the little composure he had started draining away, following the unpleasant drop his stomach took.

"How dare yo- you didn't think that this could possibly make- I could have- you- I can't, I, I- ...I think I like you." And here he paused, his expression a combination of surprise, confusion, and mild pleasure. "You are a frustrating clod, but you're honest, at least. I believe I can tolerate that."

And really, that was most of what he did, was tolerate people. Well, some people.
Besides, he couldn't expect this medic to know his species; Most he met had never even heard of the eleionomae before. Not to mention Llyr had never come to see him before; he'd had no need.

The scab seemed to have covered the wound over, as a gentle probing proved. Satisfied, he tugged at his sandals' ribbons, untying them and pushing them off his calves. Then he shifted his body to lean back against the wall before slowly pulling his sandal-free legs up onto the cot; they took up the rest of the space. That was good. He couldn't sleep on this cot even if he so desired.

The tip of his tail swayed ever so as he waited, back turned, for the reaction. Wait for it…wait for it…
There it was.
Baiting these large oafs was ever so fun.
The stuttering, indignant reply was worth the interaction necessary. However, he wasn’t exactly expecting that last bit. Turning enough to look at Llyr, he blinked rapidly a few times.
And then he let out a noise that sounded suspiciously like a strangled laugh.

Had his skin not settled into perma-gray, he would have flashed an amused color right then. Luckily, he was able to reign it in, and barely cracked a quivering half-smile for his efforts to remain stoic.
Luckily being called a ‘clod’ dimmed his amusement, but he simply let out a snort.
“I’ll let you know if I decide I can ‘tolerate’ you back, froggy.”

Truthfully he’d already decided he COULD tolerate this unusual guest. They seemed to have snark in spades, which would make banter amusing if nothing else. Not only that, but he didn’t seem overly intent on being ‘friendly’ nor ‘touchy’ - bonus points for Llyr.
Curling back up in his chair under the warmth of a heating lamp, he gave his patient a disinterested stare.
“So what are you. Tell me as much as you can. After all, no matter how smart I am, relying on lucky hunches is ill advised.”
No matter the introductions, eh?
