Title: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]
Post by: SuperMachinegun on May 23, 2013, 07:39:52 am
The sun burns through the cloudless sky of the Frontier, powerful gales of sand and heat sweeps the outskirts of little towns in the barren land where adventurers try their luck in finding treasure rumoured to have been left by ancient travelling hunters. People wandering in these parts have different intentions in battling though its environment. Though some hunt for treasure and for fame, some have been travelling though its complicated terrain for serious quests.

"It has been days since the last time we were on a small town in the Frontier," an adolescent girl with long black hair sighed out loud as she walked though the sandy road that crossed the middle of the town. The air was gentle to the skin but it flew on the ground violently bringing tiny swirling clouds of dust and sand about her cow girl style boots. "We should rest for a bit. This gate hunting sure is a killer on my legs and days of sleeping in caves do not even help with it. Even Helos' fur is getting all mucky and disgusting from what we've been doing. Boy, am I glad my hair did not get as bad as that! What do you say, Iedomee, wanna settle down for a few days?"

She looked with curiosity on the man walking along side her. He did not seem to pay much attention to her rant nor did he even respond to it. For one thing he did comb through his Goromutt's hair. The giant dog's beige mantle was darkened and stiff from all the dry and dusty weather in the open Frontier. "Yeah, Helos would really need a bath. I wonder if they have a stable I could borrow to wash Helos." Iedomee said as he looked around the town carefully as they walked though with patience.

"Could I help with the washing, Iyee?," A little girl asked Iedomee, creeping up between the brown haired man and the girl from behind. "Tara can help too!"

"Say what? I am not going near that thing if it still smells like Rotolisk dump," the girl quickly protested as she crossed her arms around her chest. "Iedomee can do that himself anyways. Lu, you and I should go around and take a look at some souvenirs, I mean we're here now! Might as well get something from this place. Oh we should get ourselves some cowgirl hats! You would look absolutely adorable in one!"

"We should get one for Helos too," Lu laughed as Helos nuzzled her bright green hair. "I think Iyee would like one too!"

Madaline was thankful she had found the small town, and the people in it had taken her so warmly. The people there didn't ask about her scars or where she came from, they had just accepted her as if she had lived there her entire life. She was charging a batter when she saw the people.

She knew she shouldn't judge people by their looks, or be weary of strangers, the town had accepted her so she knew it was only right if she did the same. Still, with her past, it was extremely difficult. When she saw a stranger she just remembered the beatings and the restraints, and all the negative things she dealt with while growing up. Still she knew she should welcome them, or at least ask them what they wanted.

Madaline took a deep breath, wiped her hands on her black cargo pants and walked towards them.
"Hey! Y'all need'n some'em?" She called out with a wave.

The trio and Helos walked towards the girl. Her short hair picked up by a quick gale that passed through town. Lu was first to approach to say hello to the girl while their large Goromutt sniffed Madaline.

"Hi there!" Lu said happily looking at Madaline in the eyes. "You're from around here, right? I'm Lu by the way!"

Iedomee and Tara followed after Lu who ran off to meet the stranger who waved at them. "Is it alright that we just let her talk to anyone? It's not safe if anyone just found out. Especially if that someone was a Mordecai." Tara whispered to Iedomee.

"Lu knows how to keep her secret. No one is going to find out." Iedomee whispered back while they walked towards Madaline.

"Hello miss, would you know any stables around for my Goromutt?" Iedomee asked Madaline.

Madaline nodded at Lu, the girl was much more energetic and more forward than herself. She seemed so happy and carefree, something Madaline envied.
"The name is Madaline," She spoke before looking up at the girls companions.

Madaline placed her hand on her hip after the man spoke, running the other hand through her hair, forgetting about her scars and how obvious they were. She looked from the man to the large dog several times, thinking.

"Well we don't have a stables for a Goromutt, per say, but we do have a stable for horses, which I am sure could serve the same purpose," She spoke after a few moments of silence. She then realized her scars were showing so she quickly moved her hands behind her back.

Around the village she didn't have to worry about her scars, no one would ask, but when new people came around she would hide them with long gloves or long sleeved shirts. Since she was not expecting new people to just wander into town, she hadn't bothered to cover them up.

"A horse stable would be alright," Iedomee replied casually. "I'm not sure the horses would like a large canine so close to them so a nice secluded stable would be alright. I just need to wash him is all."

Iedomee just finished his sentence when Tara butted in form behind him, shoving him to the side.

"Oh, Madaline, where do you think I could get some good ol' cowgirl hat? I need something that would go well with these boots. If you could talk a discount out of one of the sellers I'll be really happy about it! Oh and do you mind just taking us around here for a while? See I don't have much money on me and we haven't been around so many towns lately. Hey, if you could get us a decent place to stay I'll be more than happy to give you some of this guy's magitech stuff!"

Madaline put up her hand as the girl started babbling, her head releasing a small spark as she did so. She quickly jerked her hand back, not meaning to use her power.
Madaline's face turned bright red as a dark blush burned her face.
"Sorry," She said softly, "You just, need to slow down," She added looking at the girl.

"There is plenty of room in the stable, and I think that needs to be dealt with before your shopping trip," Madaline said before turning.
"Follow me," She said as she headed towards the stables.

It didn't take long to get to the stables, the town wasn't very large.
"Oh, and I don't use Magitech stuff," She added, looking over her shoulder.
She turned, leading them into one of the larger buildings of the town.
"Here we are," she said as she walked in, looking into the stalls to find the best place for the canine.

"Thanks," Iedomee said as he led Helos inside the stable. "It'll take a while to clean him. You can wander off if you want."

Tara clasped her hands in glee. "Thank you so much, Iedomee! By the way, the money's with me! BYE!," She quickly pulled Madaline and Lu out of the stables and back into the road. "So shopping it is, girls!"

"Tara," Lu said looking up at her. "I don't think we should spend it around so much. I think that is what we all have."

"Ah Lu, you and Madaline have yet to see my skills in gambling!" Tara confidently said as they walked through town. "After we buy our hats, we are going straight to a bar and see how I roll! Speaking of, You have any good bars with dumb brutes around here, Madaline?"

Madaline turned to say something to the man that accompanied the two girls, but was drug away before she could get out whatever she was going to say. She turned to the girl doing the dragging with a slight frown.

"Unless there is a cowboy in from the frontier, no. Most of the men here won't gamble. I didn't see any extra horses in the stables so I doubt there are any cowboys in," Madaline said after pulling her hand from the girl, not recalling her name.

She looked at the girl, she seemed very pushy and Madaline wasn't one to be pushed around. She had had enough of all of that when she was a slave. The last person who told her what to do had died at her hand.

"Damn!" Tara said as they eased on with the walking.

"By the way, Madaline?" Lu asked. "What does everyone do here? Do you hunt treasures like most people do in the dessert?" Lu smiled as much as she could to Madaline she liked her very much, though she didn't know why. She knew making friends with this girl was something good.

"The town is a midway point for a path that most cowboys take as well as adventurers as yourself. We sell supplies and have an inn and stables. We also farm here. Well, as much as we can manage, though, we seem to be able to keep our generators powered enough that we don't have much trouble," Madaline explained slowly as they walked.

"We do have a shop, a general store, I am sure they will have the cowboy hats you seek," She added as a side note.

"So people come and go in here," Lu said as she looked at Madaline with sparkling grey eyes. "How about you, Maddy? Did you grow up here?"

The two of them walked behind as they let Tara take lead. Tara was too preoccupied with looking all over the place, as if she wanted to go every little store and property in the place. "Why can't L'doreth ever have shops like this? I bet if L'doreth had neat stores like these, we would have lots of people comin' around there!"

"No, I wandered here, just like most of the people that reside here. That is why the town so welcoming and doesn't shun outsiders. Almost everyone here just happened to wander upon this place, and stayed for one reason or another," Madaline explained, watching The woman in front of them with a raised eyebrow.

The woman was a curious one if she had ever seen one. She seemed like she had way too much caffeine or at least that was what Madaline thought.

"I see you seem to be curious about Tara," Lu said as she looked to Tara who was a few paces ahead of them. "She's really loud. Some of the people around L'doreth find her annoying. Iedomee is childhood friends with her so he can tolerate her. But I like her very much, she's rubbed off on me since we meet a few months ago."

"AH!," Tara squealed as she ran to a store's window to look at animal pelts. "Those would look so nice as a new jacket!"

"You will learn to like her, I guess" Lu smiled to Madaline. "She is really a nice person."

Madaline let out a little laugh. They talked as if they were going to stay around for a while, or at least the girl did.
"I can see why people would see her as annoying," Madaline said, reaching up and rubbing the back of her neck.

"I'm not so sure, she is very... High spirited," Madaline said, choosing her words wisely, trying to be as nice as she possibly could while still being honest.

"So what are your names again? I didn't catch all three."
Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]

Lu's eyes widened when Madaline asked for their names. She seemed flustered that she forgot her manners. "I'm so sorry about that. She's Tara. The boy we were with a while ago is Iedomee and that was his giant dog, Helos. We all ride Helos to get through the Frontier. We all came from L'doreth, around a week's travel from here. And I'm Lu!"

Post by: paganchick on May 25, 2013, 09:57:17 pm
Madaline nodded, repeating the names to herself one time to make sure she remembered them.
"How long do you think.. Tara will want to shop? Is she like this all the time or did she drink something overly caffinated?" Madaline asked turning to look at Tara.

"I'm sure ya'll want to get a room at the inn," Madaline added before turning to look back at Lu.

Lu giggled at Madaline's comment. She really liked her company. "You should see her when she's with boys, she's got twice the energy challenging them with dares! You can say she's one of the boys."

Tara faced and smiled to them. "So, You guys wanna see some hats? I think this the one Madaline here was talking about. I'm thinking a pink one for you, Lu. How bout you Madaline, wanna try on some hats with me?"
Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]

It didn't sound like one of the boys to Madaline. To Madaline it sounded like Tara was trying too hard to be one of the boys, like she was trying to impress them because she felt like she had to or something. Madaline didn't know, just what it sounded like to her. She was sure she would find out before too long.

"Umm, no. Hats aren't for me, you two can have fun. I think I am going to head to the stable to see if Iedomee is fairing okay," Madaline said with a slight wave as she turned to start heading back to the stables, hoping it would be a bit quieter there.

A crowd of girls ran past them. They seemed really excited. They were laughing and giggling... and blushing. They were whispering about a foreign cowboy in the stables and somehow the word 'shirtless' was blurted out by one of the girls. Lu and Tara were left staring blankly at the girls who were giggling amongst themselves.

Tara's face curled into a frown as the girls disappeared behind the dusty haze. But she turned around and went into the shop with Lu. "Okay, Madaline you go ahead and tell Iedomee we'll be there in a few minutes."

"See you later, Maddy!" Lu waved as she walked into the shop.

Madaline waved and walked to the stables. It didn't take her too long, a small smirk still left on her face from the girls and the expression they left on Tara's face. Was that jealousy she saw on the girls face?

As Madaline entered the stables she knocked on the outside of the stall Iedomee was in so not to surprise him. She then walked into the stall, a smirk on her face.
"Seems you have already made a big impression on the local girls, Tara didn't seem all that happy about that either," Madaline said, leaning against the wall of the stall. She appeared relaxed, she clearly wasn't afraid of being alone with a stranger, knowing she could fry them if she wanted to.

"I see you got to know the girls," Iedomee said from the other side of Helos. He walked around the other side. He was shirtless and quite wet from throwing buckets of water over his pet. The fine and toned muscled detail of his torso and arms was highlighted by the sunset's light flowing into the stable. Every heave from throwing a bucketful of water made the girls swoon aloud. Giggles were heard from outside the stable and silhouettes of girls peeking from every crack of loosely built walls shifted from panel to panel, following Iedomee's movements.

"Do they ever go away? The girls I mean." He asked Madaline, not being bothered by her seeing him like that.

Madaline didn't seem as infatuated by Iedomee muscles as the other girls were. Yes, she had to admit, they were very nice, there were plenty of cowboys that came through that also had nice bodies. Plus she wasn't the type to fawn over someone.

Madaline looked from the girls to Iedomee, "Not as long as your shirtless," She said simply before looking at the mans pet. She hadn't ever seen anything like i9t really. It was much more fascinating than the man's muscles, which was something she had grown used to seeing. Well not his muscles per say, but a well build man.

"You know, teen girls, raging hormones, easily excited, and it seems you are exciting them... I would watch out, they might try to kidnap you and rape you or something, by the looks they are giving you," Madaline added with a hint of a chuckle.

Iedomee let out a small chuckle as well. "I might disappoint them that I only plan to stay here for a night. I sure hope they don't have access to all the inns here."

Iedomee threw one last pail of water over Helos to finish rinsing him. And in an instant, Helos shook wildly and completely turned a half-wet Ideomee into a soaked one sending the girls into crazier phase as some of them started to whistle at him. Helos then gave him a big lick, which Iedomee seemed to be completely used to. He grabbed a small towel and stared to wipe his face and hair with it as he took a step to face Madaline directly across the stable. "If I heard correctly, your name was Madaline, I'm Iedomee by the way and I assume you haven't seen many Goromutts in this part of town, have you?"

"My only advise would be to lock your door, and maybe barricade it a little," Madaline replied with a bit of a laugh. She was halfway being serious though, some of the girls there could get a little crazy when it came to new guys around.

Madaline flinched, trying to cover her face as she as well was covered in water. Madaline frowned at first, she didn't really enjoy being wet, but then let out a soft giggle as the girls started whistling at Iedomee.
"Can I see that towel?" She asked reaching out her hand.
"And yes my name is Madaline, and no, we don't see many... Goromutts? Out in this part of the frontier, mostly only horses," Madaline said, looking back at the giant dog.

((OOC: Sorry for the late reply. Expect me to reply late during weekdays. ))

"I'm sorry about that. Here you go," Iedomee apologised as he tossed the small towel to Madaline, his body still dripping with water and his hair thick with moisture. He didn't seem to be bothered much by the girls outside peeking at them from outside. People in this part of the frontier were very much different from one's in L'doreth who still seem to partially embrace a small tribal aspect.

"Ah, goromutts are usually wild hunters in thick forests and grasslands. I guess they never wander around here too much because of the open space. Explore around the forests, outside the Frontier that is, and you'll see stranger animals than Helos here."

Helos barked in agreement with Iedomee and continued licking its own fur, sliding its paw above its head in a rather adorable way.

(OOC: No problem)

Madaline shrugged, "It happens," She said before taking the towel. She ran it over her face, her exposed skin, there wasn't much it could do for her wet clothing though.
"So are you used to getting stared at by a mob of girls?" She asked as she looked between the girls and Iedomee.

"Well there aren't many forests here, or grasslands as a matter of fact, or at least that is what I can gather. Edanith is mostly desert, besides the cities and how the technology has greened things up," Madaline spoke as she looked at the dog.

"You don't have to go outside of the frontier to find odd animals, trust me," Madaline added with a sigh, remembering back when she had first escaped her slave holders and her days and nights spent in the desert.

"It doesn't bother me too much," Iedomee replied as he looked around to see the hormonal girls peeking through. "Though this attention might be a problem as a high profile isn't what hunters like me find as an advantage."

Iedomee walked up and leaned on a wooden column closer to Madaline. There was something more to this girl than she was letting on. "It sounds like you know what's out there. I'd take a guess and say you have spent quite some time in the open Frontier. Did you use to be an adventurer, explorer perhaps?"
Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]

Raised an eyebrow, he was a hunter. The name made her a bit sick to her stomach. He didn't say what type of hunter, what if he was the type of hunter that hunted people. What if she hadn't killed her slave owners and she had just thought she had, what if her past was about to come back and haunt her. Pure terror lay behind Madaline's eyes.

As Iedomee walked closer to her, Madaline took a step back, staying out of grabbing zone. Yes she could fry the man, but she still didn't want to be grabbed.

"You can say I went on one adventure and decided it wasn't really for me," She replied, her eyes now a bit suspicious of him.

Post by: SuperMachinegun on May 28, 2013, 08:18:47 am
"I see, I see," Iedomee replied. It was obvious how Madaline's expression tensed up. Has he said something wrong? He knew something bothered her, but he was never the type to get into someone's business. And with the current situation of Lu being in town with many people, he did not want others to get up his business too.

"Why not give it another try? But from looking at you you seem to be fine being in this town. As for me, I travel out often to hunt game. Eventually it became a job. Selling exotic meat from various places to butchers can get you a fair amount of money too. And so travelling became a frequent necessity for me."

Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]
Post by: paganchick on May 28, 2013, 08:27:37 am
Madaline breathed a heavy sigh of relief as Iedomee spoke of being a game hunter. Good, he wasn't hunting her. She started to grow more curious though, new people intrigued her once she got over her initial suspicion of them.
"What has got you out this way? There can't be much to hunt here, unless you are hunting dune lizards, and they are small, couldn't be worth your time to catch those," She asked, stepping back towards him.

She looked over his shoulder, the girls were struggling to see him, piling up to try to watch him, a few glaring in her direction. She was the same age as most of the girls, but she grew up a lot differently, she didn't fawn over anyone.
"At least if I am here life is stable. I know I will be able to eat and drink when I need to. Out on the frontier, there are no such guarantees.

Now it was Iedomee who held was held back. Stupid. Why did he have to talk about travel? Now, Madaline is asking why they came that way. How is he going to explain about Lu and the monsters and the gates? Right. He doesn't.

"Well, it was a small trip out side the village. And you know with the current craze of treasure and prized artefacts lying in the Frontier, we just wanted to try our luck with it. We heard some treasure hunters have had their fair share of luck around this town. You don't happen to know any particular spot, you know with unusual artefacts or abandoned things? Ruins perhaps?"
Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]
Post by: paganchick on May 28, 2013, 08:52:39 am
Madaline could see the slight hesitation, she wondered if there was something he left out, not too many people other than cowboys came to the town. There had been a few treasure hunters but they didn't stay for long, they got spooked by the cave.

"Well, there is a cave that I have heard about. I haven't ever been in it, no one from the town goes into it. It is eerie and most people here are pretty superstitious about things. The last set of treasure seekers barely made it into the cave before running off. Didn't even stay long enough to tell us what they saw," She informed him.
Title: Re: Gates and Monsters for Daring Adventurers [Open]
Post by: SuperMachinegun on May 28, 2013, 09:07:43 am
Iedomee was silent for a while. A cave. Like one Lu mentioned in her dream. If this was it then a gate must be in there. If nothing strange had happened to the town, then the gate must not be completely open or was still closed. Lu just needs to seal the gate and they can move onto finding the next.

"About how far is this cave?," Iedomee asked. "Maybe Tara and I could try our luck in there." He was quick to save his question. No one was to know about Lu or what she can do. She would be in danger if any Mordecai found out. Iedomee could not risk having Madaline closing in on them if she ever found something off about their stop in town. Mordecai or not, she should not find out about it.

Madaline shrugged, "Oh, not too far away, you can see it from on top of the general store. Still I wouldn't suggest going there, or at least if you are determined, go at night. The elders of the town, as I said are superstitious and will get upset if they know you are going. Especially after the last group ran away screaming and as pale as a ghost."

"I see," Iedomee said. Obviously thinking to himself. His train of thought was cut off by a sudden opening of the stable doors. For a moment, Iedomee had thought the girls have decided to go for him like animals. But something worse than them stood on front of the door.

Tara walked in with eyes wide open, breath held back and her shoulders pulled up to her face. There Iedomee was, top off and still quite wet, standing in front of Madaline, who was wet as well. Redness welled up her face as her eyes jumped back from Iedomee to Madaline. Lu stood behind her obviously shocked as well, both hands clamped on her mouth.

"YOU DISGUSTING, PERVERTED, BOY!" Tara growled as she took slow steps as she threw her newly bought hat on the ground. "I oughta punch you right now! We spend a few minutes in town and here you are stripping off for random girls! And apparently hitting on them too!"

Tara closed in on Iedomee, cracking her fists as she did so. There was something laughable about her expression. There she was infuriated by the sight of Iedomee topless in front of another girl but her cheeks were red form blushing. She obviously distracted by something on Iedomee, trying to keep her eyes fixated onto Iedomee's blank expression.

"Oooooh I need some stable to wash my dog" Tara mimicked Iedomee's voice. "You should have asked for--"

"Okay," Iedomee interrupted as he put both his hands on her shoulder. Immediately, Tara herself was shocked. "You need to calm down, there is nothing going on in here. Madaline and I were just talking."

"Too close! Too close," Tara thought to herself as she let her eyes moved down from Iedomee's face to his body. She immediately shrugged it off and turned her back on him. She was still blushing. "Yeah right, talking. It always starts out as talking."

Madaline looked down at the floor, lost in her own thoughts for a moment herself. Thinking about what she was going to have for dinner more exactly, then came the loud noise. Madaline stepped back towards the large dog.

At first Madaline found the situation hilarious. It was clear the girl had some feelings for the guy, just by how angry she was and how red her face was getting. Her eyes bounce from Lu, to Tara, and back to Iedomee. A smile on her face, until her comment 'It always starts out as talking'.

Madaline's blood instantly started to boil, she stepped closer to the girl who now faced her. Madaline's face too was turning red, but from something completely different, rage. She didn't care if they were Mordecai or not, or if they would tell her secret, she simply didn't care.

"Now listen here!" She started, pointing a finger at the girl's chest.
"Just because you like him doesn't give you a reason to get all angry and start insinuating that he is doing something, especially with me!" She screamed, the temperature in the stall rising noticeably.

"I am not a hussy, though it appears you think I am. So if you are going to make accusations, I will show you what happens to girls you don't have the ass to back those accusations up!" She said, closing the small gap between them, a mixture of popping from both Madaline's knuckles and sparks filled the air.

Iedomee stepped back when Madaline went off at Tara. Tara's eyes narrowed with anger at the girl. Clearly the tension inside was rising, even the girls outside the stable were now silent.

"Wanna take this outside, little girl?" Tara taunted as she drew her sword halfway from its sheath. She pushed her face closer to Madaline's. Fire flickered from her left hand. She wanted to take out this girl so badly, especially after she said something about her liking Iedomee. How assuming! "Oh you don't know who you're messing--"

Iedomee shoved Tara away from Madaline. He had one hand on each girls' shoulder. He looked from left to right, trying to read their expressions. They were clearly annoyed with each other, but they can't make a ruckus in a place with many people. Now it was clear they were both mages. And with two mages fighting about with their powers would attract unwanted attention from Mordecais. Iedomee did not want that to happen.

"Cool it down, the both of you." Iedomee said sternly. He looked at Lu who was hiding behind Helos. She had half of her face looking at them. She seemed quite scared. Iedomee remembered the last time Lu was scared. If ever a gate was nearby, making Lu feel scared is never a wise idea.

Within the cave the pair had been discussing, cold as any winter despite the heat of the frontier, a serpentine creature stirred as a small animal, much too small to be from its own world, ran right over its burrow. A somewhat larger creature, bipedal from the sound of it, ran after the smaller creature, making an irritating racket. Some part of the serpentine Wyrm, a fragment of knowledge from some of the lingering partial minds that made up its own, identified the creatures: A human, and a canine animal humans sometimes kept and raised as pets. Without even moving, the Wyrm reached out with its mind and probed those of the creatures. The pet proved easy to overtake, and was ensnared quickly, stopping short enough that its former master nearly fell over it.

The human, however, was a different story. What would the Wyrm do with it? After all, it wasn't really hungry, not since it had devoured a shade wolf that had wandered out of the same gate that had brought it to this world. No, the human would not be food. Not quite. But she couldn't be released, either. So far, the ones that had escaped had apparently not alerted their fellows to it, but there was no telling how long that would last. No, the human could not be allowed to escape. But there was another option. As the Wyrm devoured the mind, rather than the body, of the human, it paid careful attention to learning everything the human knew, then sent her and her pet out again, this time to act as its eyes, ears, and, if necessary, fangs. The human would serve as an effective spy, and its first trip was to the town from whence she'd come.

As the human wandered the town, an expression of deep thought plastered to her face, despite her blank eyes, she, or, rather the Wyrm controlling her, took note of the conversations the other humans were having. Most such conversations were nothing particularly noteworthy, random snippets of daily life, dinner schedules, make ups, break ups, dates, the usual daily BS, as the human's mind had told it, but a few were about the 'forbidden' cave, and the mystery, and superstition, surrounding it. The humans clearly knew of the cave, but, just as clearly, feared it. This was good. Fearful humans, several parts of its mind concurred, tended to stay away from places they feared. The fear, however, also presented a threat: Humans also tended to hire stronger and better-armed humans to get rid of dangerous creatures. Many of the weapons were of little concern. Conventional weapons were weak enough that the prey was usually dead by the time they mattered. Even the strong creatures that had mastered the Snapwyrm's homeworld, the large dragonlike creatures who knew themselves as Karmid, often had to resort to other methods if they wished to survive. No, the thing that presented the most threat was the magic-users. Those that could summon flames of magic were the most dangerous to the beast. Even psychics, with their raw destruction, were not as much a threat, as mages were both prey and predator to Wyrms, the snack that bit back just as hard, under the right conditions.

"... the ass to back those accusations up!". The words made the Wyrm halt the human and pet, its mind's eye able to see what the human puppet's could not. The telltale currents of red-orange converging on the stable from whence the sound had come. A magic-user. One who commanded flame, at that. The human puppet moved closer, and hesitated before entering the stable, looking around. Nowhere nearby were the empty areas that told of the presence of the ones the humans of the town called 'Mordecai'. Satisfied, the Wyrm ran the pet into the stable, then made the human chase in after. "Caylee! Wait up!", the human puppet was made to shout, its inflection similar to the annoying fuss it had made in the cave, "I'm so sorry. Caylee's still a puppy. She hears something, and she always has to go check it out...", the puppet was made to explain in an apologetic tone, keeping its head down to avoid allowing the humans to see its blank stare. The Wyrm did not need to have its puppet look at the humans in the room to study them, when it could simply shift its perspective into something akin to third-person view and look around that way. Through the human that had been shouting ran fire and lightning magics, mostly, though traces of others above the background magic of humans also existed. 'Mage.', the human fragment that had once been the puppet 'spoke', its whisper present only in the Wyrm's mind.

Through the male ran no magics beyond those of a normal human, though much magic pooled in pieces of his equipment. The Wyrm briefly noted the oddity of the non-mage armed with magic before moving on. The female the fire mage had been yelling at bore a different balance of magics, not quite human, also bore the telltale signs of fire magic, though the flow was different, constrained, as if this female knew not the power she possessed, or, perhaps, knew not how to use it well.

Through the smallest among them ran great spatial and temporal strength, though, like the novice female, it was constrained. Though it flowed more easily than the taller untrained female, the flow still spoke of power perhaps not fully touched upon. This one was, perhaps, as dangerous as the fire mage.

The novice mage had snapped a reply back at the fire mage, but was interrupted by the male. This interested the Wyrm greatly. It seemed that the male was the one who would keep the group from turning on each other, and that the fire mage's anger wasn't one-sided. This was good. Subduing the male, and turning the fire mages against each other would, it would seem, solve the issue of the dreaded fire magic.

[Dangit! I was hoping to post before you replied!]

Madaline saw the flames in the girls left hand and laughed a bitter laugh. Even with the man holding her shoulder she could kill the girl.

Madaline leaned in close to the girl, her mouth right beside Tara's ear so only she would hear.
"I dare you to throw that at me, little girl. Your sword is no match, and neither is your novice attempt at magic. If I wished, I could burn you from the inside out, or worse. You have not seen war magic like I possess. If I were you, I would watch my step," She whispered.

Tara was really tempted to skewer the girl with her blade, but her thought was stopped by Iedomee's frown. She put back her sword just as a random stranger and her dog came barging into the stable.

"I'm so sorry. Caylee's still a puppy. She hears something, and she always has to go check it out..." She said, keeping her head looking down.

Tara was quick to extinguish the flames dancing on her fingers as she turned around to look at the stranger. She gave Madaline a nasty look. It was definitely meant to say 'This isn't over yet.' Madaline was partly right about her liking Iedomee and Tara could not help but think that Madaline was after Iedomee even if she implied the absence of her interest to him.

"Okay, people have to stop barging in here," Iedomee said as Tara pulled her shoulder away from his hand. He walked to a stool where his under shirt was and put it on. Three adolescent girls in a stable with a shirtless guy was not the situation he wanted anyone seeing.

Though the fire-mage's words did not reach the ears of the human puppet, and were too distorted by the limits of the pet puppet's brain's ability to make sense of them beyond the simple meaning of aggression, the flow of the human's magics suggested the whispered words were a threat, a hypothesis aided by the slight quickening of the novice mage's magics, as well as the nasty look she shot the fire-mage. A confirmation as good as any confession of the Wyrm's suspicion that the two had bad blood between them. Triggering that bad blood would be essential to removing the threat the fire-mage posed, for even a momentary distraction would be advantage enough. Equally confirmed was its suspicion that the male would keep the peace. The male needed to be dealt with first, that much was certain.

"I'm sorry... I must have interrupted something. Caylee, we should go.", the human puppet was made to say, despite leaving being the last thing the Wyrm wanted. The dog, meanwhile, was made to go straight to the smallest human and pounce at her, testing her reaction time, speed, and strength, and hopefully catching her scent under the pretense of being a playful puppy, something the animal's mind had still vaguely remembered. "Caylee, NO!", the human puppet was made to shout as she was made to run to stop the dog puppet.

Madaline glared back at Tara, fully convinced she could take the girl. She was more than simply convinced, she was all but certain she could take the girl. Or course she would probably do better with a little distance considering she lacked a sword, still she didn't doubt herself that if it came down to it, she would win.

Madaline's eyes then moved to the girl who barged in. She couldn't put her finger on it but there was something off about the girl. She let her eyes examine the girl very closely, if the slightest this was off she would notice.

"Hey, you're the new attractive man with his shirt off," She said, moving her gaze from the girl and her pet only long enough to wink at Iedomee before her eyes returned to the duo that had barged in. "Got no one to blame but yourself."

Lu, being very inexperience with anything to do with quick reactions, had no choice but to be pounce upon by the pup. She played around the little canine as Helos sniffed the dog thoroughly. "He's adorable!" Lu laughed as she stroked the dog through its fluffy fur. She was in glee playing with Caylee, that was until her vision shifted to a dark cave.

The cold air sank down as feathery whisps crawling on the ice-coated ground of the cave. The faint glow of the gate caught her sight. Just as her vision was ending she saw a reptile-like creature slithering amongst the ice. It looked right at her and her vision ended.

She loosened her pats on the dog and crawled back from it. Helos seemed to understand that Lu was troubled and nuzzled his snout next to her face.

Iedomee however was taken aback by Madaline's shift in her mood. All of a sudden she's called him attractive. Iedomee did not really know how to respond to that. "Umm, thanks I guess." He was still sensing something off from the girl that walked in. there was something peculiar about her. She looked like anyone from the village but there was something going on with her.

The Wyrm continued to observe the humans, making a note of the fire mage's suspicious expression. As it did, it could sense a distortion in the magic near the place where it had entered the world, and surfaced to meet the threat, sensing no minds there. As the currents of magic grew stronger, the Wyrm began to see the similarities between it and the smallest human's magics, and looked directly at the source. 'Vision magic, perhaps', one of the Karmid fragments mused in its own ancient tongue.

The Wyrm was puzzled at the new development. The fire mage had first been angry at the novice, then, according to the human fragments, her face became an expression of suspicion. That was expected. What was not was the sudden decision to attempt to attract the male. It was a brief pause, but enough to distract the serpent, causing the puppets to briefly 'freeze' in place as it mulled over the odd action. Suspicious humans did not just stop to attract a mate, the fragments seemed to agree. Perhaps it was a less direct attack on the novice mage? The Wyrm returned its attention to the puppets and resumed the dog's 'playing' and the human's attempts to regain control of the dog.

The decision was made immediately. The smallest human had seen the Wyrm, which meant the puppets could not afford to remain much longer, to speak nothing of the fire mage's suspicion. Slowly, so as to make the dog seem reluctant, the Wyrm made the dog puppet allow herself to be pulled off of the smallest human. "Come on, Caylee. We're going home.", the human puppet was made to say, "I'm sorry again for bothering you.".

Madaline crossed her arms, waiting in silence until the two left before she began to speak.
"I think we were just spied upon, did you see how both just froze. It was a brief moment yes, but it wasn't right. There are only a few magics that could do that," Madaline looked at Lu.

"Did you see their eyes, they were facing you," She asked, her voice sweet and kind. Then she turned to Iedomee, taking a step closer to him, completely ignoring Tara.
"Earlier I never said I didn't find you attractive, I only said I wasn't whoring around, there is a difference," Madaline said with a sweet smile.

Lu did not know how to reply to Madaline, she was still shaken up by what she saw. The image of the sinister eyes of the creature bore itself in her mind. with every blink it seemed as if the eyes were getting more real and real.

With what Madaline just said, Iedomee clearly knew she was just trying to get to Tara's nerves. At least the two weren't trying to fry each other now. He looked at her smiling. Then at Tara who was completely ignoring the two of them, the scowl on her face was so obvious.

"Lu, let's go," Tara called to her. "It looks like we're interrupting Iedomee's flirt session."

"It's not what you think, I wasn't--"

"Whatever, Iedomeee! I'm not the boss of you. So you just keep doing what you like. But just so you know we're leaving this town first thing in the morning! I already got us two rooms for the night. Come on, Lu."

Lu ran to Tara and grabbed her hand. She turned back to Iedomee. He knew very well what she needed to say from her expression. There was an open gate nearby, and it clearly scared Lu. With that Tara shut the door as loud as she can.

Iedomee sighed and proceeded to stack the buckets that lay around. "Just tolerate Tara for a while. She's a really nice person if you got to know her." he said to Madaline hoping to lighten things up between the two.

Madaline kept the gentle smile on her face as Tara had her little fit. She, if anything, was jealous. It was so obvious that she had a thing for Iedomee.

"As long as she doesn't think you have a thing for the guy she is crushing on that is," Madaline replied as she started to help Iedomee pick up the buckets. She had thoroughly enjoyed ticking Tara off, it was rather fun. The girl was so jealous, envy was practically radiating off of her.

The Wyrm had scarcely walked the puppets down the street when the door's slamming alerted it to the departure of the novice and the smallest. In it, it sensed an opportunity, but the current puppet's cover was already as good as blown. No, if it was to take advantage of the information it had received, a new puppet was needed, one which could get closer to the group, for there was no longer any mistake to be made: The group was definitely a threat, and all of the fragments agreed that removing that threat was now the only acceptable course of action. Both puppets were made to return to the cave. While they had outlived their usefulness as spies, the Wyrm saw, perhaps, other uses, for after the threat of the smallest human had been dealt with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the puppets returned, the gate brought forth more of Draconis's wildlife in the form of two kahur-koored, tortoise-like beasts with snow-colored shells, capable of magically forming and firing large pearls from their mouths, like mass accelerator cannons made out of tortoise shells, and a shadow wolf, a large wolf-like beast which, when provoked, could create a cloud of fog darker than any shadow around itself, leading to many humans to refer to them as 'dark clouds with teeth'. This was perfect. The Wyrm quickly overtook the minds of the creatures, making them puppets in no time. Back in its original territory, it had devoured more than enough of the creatures to no longer care about what knowledge their minds held, and the Wyrm saw little need to make them act like themselves in so obviously different a territory. The task of obtaining new puppets as complete as it could be, for the moment, the Wyrm sent the human puppet to the cave's entrance to act as bait, then settled in for a nice, light nap, leaving only a small portion of its mind alert to maintain control and awareness of the puppets.

Iedomee returned a little laugh as he and Madaline fixed the place up. The sun had almost set when they finished and left Helos inside the stable. The girls around the stable were gone and lamps were being lit in preparation for the night.

Iedomee thanked Madaline for her help as they parted ways in town. He headed for the inn where Tara and Lu were. There they were having an early dinner. A bowl of soup was set aside for him in front of an empty third seat. Tara was still snobbish and continued to eat her soup.

"Lu," Iedomee whispered discreetly. "Did you see another gate?"

"Yeah," She replied queasily.

"Madaline told me about a cave. We should see it. If ever it is open, we need to seal it before anymore monsters get in. We leave at night when everyone's asleep. Okay?" Iedomee told them, still whispering as he took a spoonful of soup. They both nodded. Just like most of the guests, they went into their rooms to rest. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, but knowing their luck, Iedomee prepared for the worst and set up his equipment as Tara and Lu slept in the next room.
