Shaping Teinar (Open, Kitsy!)

"They're a bunch of raving loonies."

Varian's first impression of the Teinari was secondhand, and came with directions to their camp. He had to trade away a full canteen of water for the information, but he had the feeling it would be worth it in the end. Varian had heard about the mages, the exiles who had formed a loose confederation within the region. He just didn't know they were still around.

"Neh," Varian had remarked, "out here in the wastes, who isn't?"

He changed course and began hiking towards what he could only hope was safety and a reliable source of food. After a few days of uneventful travel, a thin plume of smoke became visible in the distance. He squinted, managing to distinguish the shape of a wooden lookout tower. The old man's words had been true; the Teinar camp was right there, waiting for his arrival. He wiped the dirt from his face and continued walking.

The wolf presented a problem.

Varian inched his hand towards the utility belt. The pistol was an ancient, rusting piece of equipment his father had owned. There was one bullet left in the chamber. While wandering the wastelands, a scenario had often come to Varian's mind in which he was surrounded by mutant predators, the nature of which he had no hope of defeating or escaping. Varian thought of himself as a practical nomad, and always kept one bullet for that rainy day. On the other hand, it had been almost a week since he'd last eaten. Starvation was not preferable to a death by one's own hand. The camp was so close...

There was a harsh wind blowing from the direction he'd come, and here was a predator he could face, crouching in the sand dunes, ready to spring at any moment. With a quick motion, the weapon was in Varian's grip. His hand shook as he leveled his gun at the wolf, waiting for it to turn away.

No luck. The wolf bent its back legs in preparation for the lunge, and Varian fired his last round.

Okay... lunch.

The group assembled at the camp was tired and dirty. They were some of the way underground by now. They had broken ground about a month ago. They had at least worked enough to give themselves a somewhat sufficient cover. They had to work with what they had, but they also needed quality and speed. It was a very daunting task ahead of the group.

Callen was wiping his brow as his wife Sheila set a plate of food in front of him. Some dry not exactly appetizing food. It was all they really had at the moment. He was about thirty years old and had such a passion about the Teinar ideas that he decided to help build it. Most of the group was dressed in brown to blend in with the desert like landscape.

Sheila was almost like the mom of the group. She was always trying to keep everyone in line and make sure they didn't kill each other. She did her own share of work as well. The Teinari colonists sat around the table they had scarfing down into some of the dry food and water. At least the water was good. They looked exhausted, but they al lhad a strange light in their eyes like they felt they were doing good. Almost liek they had found their place.

Their communicators sat on the table as they spoke in hushed voices. They almost always spoke quietly trying not to jinx their purpose here. Except when they were all screaming at each other that is.

Callen's communicator lit up a neon green color and he grabbed it quickly, like it was an instinct sliding it onto his ear. Everyone's eyes lifted and people reached for their guns. They could all hear the look outs voice small like a mouse in the hole they were digging.

"There's someone out here...only one person though...that I can see."

Varian slung the heavy carcass of the wolf over his shoulder. If there was someone on top of the lookout tower, they would have seen him by now. He raised the pistol high into the air with his left hand, dropping the empty clip with his right. There wasn't much sense in looking dangerous. And the palisade...

The hunger gnawed at his insides, a dull pain, a sense of emptiness. Food riots had already begun on the streets of Ipollius, and the local militia had been forced to construct a makeshift barricade around the storehouse, a spiked wooden fence made with whatever materials were handy at the time. Ration packs were distributed each day, one per family, for the next two weeks. After that, the people of Ipollius would be on their own.

He reached the gatehouse a few minutes later, a hastily-built wooden tower and palisade. It looked as if they'd been working on the camp for a while; stacks of lumber and tools were scattered everywhere. Didn't look like an Aedolis outpost, though: not enough machinery. Come to think of it, the camp looked far less populated than the massive construction effort would suggest...

There was nobody at the storehouse on the tenth day, save for a few confused and hungry citizens. The rations, it seemed, had run out a mite sooner than expected.

No, the camp was deserted except for that man in the watchtower, crouching behind a rifle. Varian kept his hands high, his own weapon unloaded. His face was streaked with dirt, and he smiled slightly as he dropped the carcass on the ground. He folded his arms and leaned against the gate, glancing briefly up at the lookout as he raised his voice.

"Lemme in, m'starving out here. No more bullets, man."

((Sorry it took so long, I had an evil sort of block.))

Thanos looked up at Callen, his young eyes wide. He looked at him like a father, the man had been a replacement for Thanos's when he had died while trying to smuggle him over. He had lost all of his family besides his mother. Thanos seemed to trust Callen completely but there were times when he had a mind of his own. One that seemed sort of dangerous. Not to mention the magic.

Their masks laid on the table and Callen's fingers rested on his as he listened to the look out. The mouse voice spoke again and they all remained silent trying to hear him.

"He says he's out of bullets. Looks like he's been traveling for a couple days, also he must be a tourist he shot one of the animals...carrying it like he's gonna eat him." Callen looked to Shelia who was watching him along with everyone else in the group. He looked around the table, they looked like they weren't afraid of doubting of the man. Especially because of the animal he was carrying.

He could be a scout from Aedolis but more likely they would have descended without warning. It was probably just a man looking for a place to run away to.

"Let him in." He spoke cautiously, nervous. Their whole civilization always seemed to be on the line with just a few words. It was amazing how much the small decisions effected every little thing.

((And this one's shoooort :3 should be better in the future.))
