This Little Light of Mine. [One Shot]
« on: November 19, 2017, 05:51:33 pm »
Another day, another chance for Mia to bring her own light into the world. So far hadn't been so bad. An afternoon spent with Nishi and Hugh, preparing soup for Harley who had been sick. An afternoon full of laughter and jokes, every bit of heart she could possibly muster poured into the bowl they sent to her comrade. Every day regardless of the task and attempt to shine even the tiniest fraction of light on the world around her. Every step taken and word spoken given the spark and opportunity to brighten someone's day.

That was what it was all about anyway. Refusing to live a day where she brought someone down. Instead, it was more important to lift them up, help them see that even the smallest candlelight could illuminate the darkest corner. And while some may resist that light, Mia always offered it.

But at the end of every day, when all was said and done, that flame would flicker, the light behind her own eyes would struggle to stay alive.

The sound of a click behind her, that reassuring sound that she was indeed alone again gave signal she could let it fall. If only for a moment Mia could let her smile falter as she stood in the solace of her own apartment. The silence within the walls a reminder of how alone she truly was here. Everyone else probably either snuggled up or talking to someone in one way or another.

Fingers fumbling through Harley's pockets she eventually let them curl around her Com. Bringing it out she clicked it on only to see the time flashing across the screen, nothing more... nothing less. In a few steps she had the pants off and folded before carefully escorting them to the designated place under her bed with her collection. A hint of a smile crossing her lips as she ran her hand over the box, pressing her palm firmly against the top before sliding it back under.

"Harley is feeling better..." an exclamation in an empty apartment as Mia made her way back towards the living room. "We all got together and made him some soup. He hasn't eaten anything other than crackers so I thought it would be a good idea to make him something special." A light laugh rang past her lips as she bent down in front of the miniature refrigerator Vander had given her.

"Speaking of hungry, I bet you're starving!"

Beyond the sticker-covered door was various containers containing insects for Violet to eat.

"Do you want crickets or centipedes?" A brief moment of silence before Mia answered herself. "Oh right, centipedes are your favorite."

Closing the door Mia set the container on her slightly sloped table as she then began foraging through her own cabinets for food. "I'm sorry I left you at home all day again. I promise next weekend when we are in Margad I will take you everywhere! I know how much you love the flowers and bugs there."

Another pause as Mia stared at a box of noodles.  "... I miss Margad too sometimes."

"But think of all the fun we are having here. We have friends and a great squad. Plus we have each other. As long as we have that then we will both have a little piece of Margad with us won't we?" Another smile as Mia pulled down the box of noodles and began setting up a pan to boil them in.

"We can never be alone as long as we have each other Violet." Once the pot was set up Mia made her way towards Violet's tank, the container of centipedes in hand.

"Violet?"

The flame flickered, suffocated... extinguished.

Mia had been fortunate enough in life to never really experience death firsthand. Her mother died before she even knew what a mother was. From time to time she wondered what it would be like to have one, but overall you can't miss something you never had. She never knew the gut-twisting feeling that was bringing her to her knees now. She never knew that instant awareness that you would never be able to speak to someone again. As if in an instant Mia's entire world seemed a whole lot smaller.

Holding Violet's form in her hands Mia curled them against her chest, her eyes burning as she tried to remember how to breathe. She just wanted to hold her as close to her heart as she could. She already longed for the feeling of tiny pinchers touching her neck, that feeling of something... anything... needing her as badly as she needed it.

"You can't leave me..." a whisper pushing past the lump in her throat. "... We were supposed to be in this together."

With her pinky, Mia tried to move one of Violet's long pinchers only to have it resist with the stiffness already beginning to set in. "Violet come back...." her voice now a squeak among mice. "Please come back..."
