Never mind the other day [Incandessa]
« on: July 27, 2019, 06:09:48 pm »
It had been a few weeks sense that odd conversation in the back of a car between Emrys and his, notably, favorite child. Emrys hadn’t spoken of it or the subjects covered there in sense. In fact he seemed to be actively ignoring the idea that the conversation had ever even happened. Of course his work took him all over the known universe... politicking. As he was now, readying himself to attend a formal ball and dinner hosted by yet another foreign power that Emrys hoped to gain contacts within and learn of some of their secrets to report back to his own superiors.

His daughter, Fiona was a frequent accompaniment to him on such ventures. He likes to dress her up and show her off, and besides that one would be amazing the sorts of things that spilled past the lips of young men trying to impress beautiful young women. Emrys had never discussed his work with Fiona in more that a superficial sense, but he had often used her to gather information. She was either unaware or let on that she was.

As it was, a shiny black car was now taking them, Emrys dressed in his polished dress uniform, and Fiona in a stunning gown toward the party that was their destination. His orderly, looked equally as smart in the dress uniform of an enlisted man, sat in the front passenger seat. A pain of glass separated the driver and orderly from Emrys and his daughter.

“Have you ever considered marriage?” Emrys asked, “of course now is not the time for formal engagements,” she would be leaving home, soon, for years of training, “but it’s not to soon to be looking into your options.” She had been born into the highest echelons of Aedlian society, she could marry well back home or even, given his help in exposing her to them, into the many circles of dignitaries in other planets.. which might me MOST useful for his own work. He had lived a lonely life with no real human connection... but that didn’t mean she had to. “There are many eligible young men that might make a good match.” Meaning there WERE young men out there he would approve of, as long as it was gone about properly.

As awkward the talk in the car was, Fiona did her best to forget the incident. Luckily, it was relatively easy with her father going here, there, and everywhere in the galaxy. And now that he was back and they were going to a party, she was more than willing to forego the incident entirely. Besides, parties where places to relax and shamelessly flirt with boys. It was the one place her father didn't seem to get on her case about.

Parties in particularly were especially fun. Her father had gotten her a new purple dress that complimented her green skin and silver hair with a delicate silver chain necklace. There was something of an ego stroke to have physical gifts reminding her that SHE was Emrys' favorite. It was both something she rather enjoyed and her siblings despised. Not that that was any different from any other time. Even as she was leaving, her older sister sneered at her, though nothing more. The rare times the siblings fought, Fiona was not afraid to pull the 'favorite' card. Sometimes, Fiona wished she had a closer relationship with her siblings, but it wasn't like she could do anything about it.

In the car, when Emrys brought up his question, she was taken aback. Emrys never approved of any relationship with a boy, and all he ever talked about was her becoming a pilot. A dark green blush colored her cheeks. "Since when do you talk about marriage, Father?" she asked.

“Sense,” he said, noting the deep blush on her cheeks that others would likely find attractive on her, “You are starting to grow into a young woman.” He smiled at her faintly and pride played along th edges of his expression. “I can’t possibly be the only one thinking about it.” Perhaps she hadn’t, but he was sure some of the other young men in the circles she walked her threw, and certainly their fathers, had considered it.

“I have received a few subtle proddings to see if you might be in the market.” He waved a hand almost dismissively, “Of course I didn’t digest you might be interested until after you’ve graduated from Candidate training, but it doesn’t mean you couldn’t be looking now - making connections and sending out feelers. You come from the best stalk, after all. There are many high cast peers who would be delighted to have you marry one of their sons or even dignitaries of foreign nations and other worlds who would see you as a good match.” Yes, there was a very specific breed of young man he would approve of for such a thing, however there WAS a sort he would approve if.

Fiona wasn't quite sure how to feel about this. All the talk of stalk and high class peers and a 'good match' kind of made it feel like her father was arranging a political marriage, which she had no doubt he was perfectly willing to do. It sucked the fun out a bit. On the other hand, there were some pretty cute guys at these parties, and here her father was giving her full permission to find a boyfriend. She could already think of a few boys who had caught her eye at the last dance. Maybe not marriage, but definitely kissing material. Not wanting to disappoint, Fiona answered with the safest answer she knew-

"Whatever you wish, Father."

Well Emrys would only allow someone he approved of, but, “It’s not just what I wish.” What an odd thing for him to say to any of his children. “Certainly I would have an opinion,” meaning there was a bar to be reached for anyone she wished to date or might want an engagement out of, “but they should be to your liking also.” Love he didn’t care about, she might, but if she married someone she’d have to live with them, after all.

“Has anyone caught you eye?” He asked, curious for her opinion. “Of course nothing permanent would be considered until you’ve graduated, so you have time to... look around.”

Fiona wasn't sure how much she trusted her father's words, with him there was always a catch. Even his favortism of her came with the catch that she had powers. At least he was giving her a choice in the matter. She had always assumed he would choose her husband for her, regardless.

She thought for a moment. There weren't any particular boys that stood out in her mind. Most were generally nice and good looking, but it wasn't like she had a lot of one on one time with any of them or seen them outside of these parties. "I suppose Colin Murphy is ok," she said, struggling to come up with a name. Colin was the son of a general or diplomat (or maybe both?). He had dark brown hair and the brightest smile in the group. A bit of a tease, he was very confident and knew how to hold a room. Still, it wasn't like she held him particularly above the others. She wished there was one that she felt a spark for. A real connection.

Well, Fiona wasn’t wrong to be cautious. Emrys could be quite frank, but often there were many layers of intentions behind the words he chose with care, when he spoke. He looked thoughtful when Fiona gave a name. Colin Merphy was the some of Yes, a diplomat... he was married to a woman, a Senator, the Lady Hanavin Jalr, from a world that still tracked royal bloodlines. Apparently she was some distant relation of the ruling house and so had retained her own name when marrying, because it was a requirement to keep her political and social standing.

He gave a nod. “A decent option,” he said after a moment of thoughtful silence. “His parents are wealthy and influential, and he’s all the makings of a brilliant political career... Perhaps you should let him take you out sometime... or someone else, as you please.” He didn’t meaning running around with them or making out in corners of schoolyards, but some kind of proper date or social event appropriate for her to be seen at. A dance, a play, a concert perhaps... something like that.

A soft white flush crossed Fiona’s cheeks, and she was looking just about anywhere than at her father’s face. The awkwardness hung in the air like a fog. Why did she have to discuss boys with her father? She would’ve had an easier time talking with him about face eating aliens. “I… guess so,” she said, swallowing nervously. Unconsciously, she turned invisible, and it took her a full minute to realize what she had done and regain control over her powers.

“So, um, how are the negotiations going with um… Senator … Farafra?” Fiona asked, desperately trying to change the subject. She probably got the name of the senator wrong, but anything was better than the subject they were currently on. “You’re not cheating her out of her money are you?” she asked with a bit of a forced laugh. Fiona certainly knew her father’s reputation for being a very good diplomat, which she had eventually came to know as just being very good at manipulating people. Oops, with her father’s gift, he definitely heard that thought.

"You need to learn to control that better," Emrys said giving a faint frown of disapproval in the direction that he knew his daughter sat even though he couldn't see her at all for a minute. "Invisibility is only an asset if no one knows you're there to begin with... otherwise it just makes you look sloppy."

Emrys smirked lightly and gave a nod of agreement. "It's all perfectly legal, of course," he answered, "but yes... I might be cheating her out of her money... for the good of Aedolis, of course."
