It's a trap! [Valkyries and Hellions]
« on: October 22, 2017, 07:36:05 pm »
Yavul pulled his legs up a little closer, crossing them beneath himself as he sat on the boulder, and thumbed the controls to his designated RC car. The little vehicle hummed, whirred, the wheels twisting to turn hard right before it shot off across the dry, bitter sands. Right, left, right again, and then right on back to his perch.

The sun was low, but not quite to setting yet. It provided a fair amount of glare, but that was why they had picked this particular segment of the dune wastes to go hunting-- well, that and Razican had done his little radar thing, and it looked like there was a batch of potential tunnels within which their quarry might be hiding. But the position of the sun would put what light they had at their backs, and subsequently right in the face of whatever decided to pop up out of the sands.

Well, that, and there were plenty of rocky parts to provide safe walking space. Could never really trust soft ground out here.

The plan was pretty simple-- race the cars over the trapdoor spider's triggers, and when a car got bit, everyone converged for a good old-fashioned giant spider beatdown. It served a kind of double purpose that way. They kept these burrowing sons of bitches far away from the city walls, and thus away from the general populace, and they got the benefit of beating the absolute shit out of something for the funsies.

After the past couple of weeks the Valkyries had had? Fuck yes, beating the absolute shit out of something for the funsies. Yavul sure as shit needed that bit of catharsis; he'd spent nearly the entire past twenty four hours dead asleep, but that had done next to nothing for the rattling ball of... whatever that had been pinballing against his ribcage for fuckall too long.

"Y'all done squabblin' over who gets the blue one? We're gonna be losin' daylight at this rate." He hummed over the coms linking his and his compatriots' helmets, even as he made his own little car do tiny whirring donuts in the dust. Or, at least, until a second car came barreling down to side-swipe him, their tiny little motors squealing.

Yavul frowned, and turned to look somewhere to his right, where a much more slender figure was similarly seated, and shaking with suppressed laughter.

"That's how you wanna play it," he muttered, turning his RC around and similarly ramming Locusta's own, the two kicking up sand and dust in a weird anti-tug of war.

"Hyakinthos, really, stop running into walls like this! You're going to damage your equipment!" Locusta crowed, whirling her car around and pushing his right into the outcropping, leaving his wheels raised and spinning.

"Oh, now you done it, girl," he shot back, teeth bared in a grin. The bit of antagonism wasn't unwelcome, but perhaps a little unwise considering their current toolset, which perhaps occurred to Locusta just before Yavul twitched his left index finger at her car and reduced it to fizzing sparks.

"...Well played." came her response, before she looked over to the rest of the gathered squad members. "Can I get a little tech support over here?"

Adele had been giddy about this for days now; first real mission? Hell yeah, first real mission!

The day seemed to drag on forever leading up to their designated meeting time for the hunt--not that they hadn't enjoyed it, mind you. They'd enjoyed it immensely, having spent most of it with Hannibal and Tamia, getting lunch and in general enjoying each others' company until it was time to head home, get a last run in with Algonquin and get suited up.

Today was also a bit special for another reason--they'd get to spend some time with Kostner.

Addie's dragon wasn't exactly the fondest of them for their personality; he thought they wasted too much time being a flirtacious little rat, that they didn't take life seriously enough, though he did admit they got their work done as quickly as they did it well. He was just a tough guy to please. So the two of them really didn't spend much time together; didn't really chat, didn't really bother to stick around in each others' company. But today he was coming with, to see their performance on their first mission, and also apparently because he wouldn't be the only dragon there.

"The blue one's lame, I got the coolest.~"

Addie snickered as they hit their little lime green monster truck (with flashy hot pink lightning bolt on the side car doors) up against a rock that flipped it onto its back wheels and drove it around, doing tricks with the remote control sitting comfortably in their hands. They weren't standing too far off from the other Pilots who were all still squabbling over colors; Addie had been the fastest to the draw it seemed.

Their flight suit helmet was perched on a rock not too far away, preferring the feeling of the light breeze ruffling their pink hair and wanting to enjoy it while they still could. They rolled their shoulders, tail twitching against the fabric constricting it that was a part of their suit. It felt weird. They did have to admit though, they thought the suit as a whole looked pretty snazzy on them.

It took a certain amount of effort to not drool whenever they looked at some of their squadmates who were also suited up. What? They were designed to be comfortable and functional, but boy they looked hella flattering on all persons here. Not fair at all.

Kostner closed his eyes, his scaly brow ridges furrowing together as he took in a slow, deep breath, and slowly let it back out from where he perched a good ten feet or so away on some larger rocky outcroppings. "Adele..."

"What? C'mon man look at this!" They ran it up a rock and it jumped out over Yavul and Locusta's little cars, but unfortunately it hit the ground and bounced and landed on its side, wheels spinning uselessly. Lil too much throttle on that one. :x Mhm.

Kostner just shook his big head, golden scales blending in well with the sandy landscape as he tried to find something else to focus on that wasn't his dipshit of a pilot. Addie didn't let it bother them none, scrambling over the rocks to retrieve their little car with a grin on their face and ran back over to join Hannibal and the others, eyebrows raising as they looked over to see which one Hannah had.

"Big Guy, didja get the red one?" They guessed.

Her own car, black, of course, sped across the sand. Unlike Yavul and Locusta who were clearly having some kind of duel Sparrow kept her eye on the prize. With a thumb pressed forwards to direct the car farther out, she was all concentration as she waited for anything to pop out. Well, that was until the rat person's little toy car did some kind of stunt off a rock.

Shaking her head Sparrow smirked, standing up to unlatch her own helmet in the progress. So far she was doing better than she thought. Even back out in the wastes she managed to keep a sense of calm about her. Maybe it was because she was surrounded by allies this time around, or maybe just because her mind was distracted by something else entirely.

"I am the last person you want to provide Tech Support, Locusta." Sparrow looked over her shoulder at her fellow Hellion. "Maybe next time you should think ahead before screwing with an electro. I heard they can be quite feisty."

Tamia, on the other hand, was everything but calm as she rushed over and grabbed the first truck she could get her hands on. The color was irrelevant as she snatched up the brown one, hopping back over rocks to her own little area. Crouching down she unlatched a pouch on her belt and began working diligently.

After just a few moments Mia was hopping across rocks again as she made her way over to her squadmates. She had already set her truck down and was now directing the brown truck sporting a tiny Valkyries flag with a bedazzled pole towards the others.

"I'm so excited!" Rocking on the tips of her toes as she pushed it forwards, making the small truck do little donuts here and there. One she hit too hard, causing the little truck to topple over on its side. Still excited Mia simply twitched before the truck slowly was pushed back up by black particles emerging from the sand below.

"Did you guys know that sand has tons of Magnetite in it. So cool....Like that stuff in an etchy sketchy!" Tamia giggled through the Com in her helmet as she continued making her truck do all sorts of weaving motions.

Raz had been looking forward to this outing ever since he'd heard about it, and by the time they'd come to land out in the dust his jaw ached from the perpetual grin he'd had plastered on his face.

Even now, as he sat on a rock with his translucent RC car driving in large circles in the dust, he was grinning. Just waiting for everyone to get their gear together, he cast a glance around and let his car come to a stop. With a twinge of amusement, he watched as the Bossman fried Locusta's car, and not too soon after watching Adele's little green monster fly over the top of them to land on its side.

"Ha! Bossman, I hope you got plenty of extra's. Got one fried already, and it's looking like the stuntdriver over there isn't gonna be too far behind!" Razican chuckled over the com as he gestured to Addie, just as he picked up his car.

Across the way, Vaas was casually leaning against a stone shelf, helmet held loosely in one hand, cooly regarding the others with an amused smirk on his lips. With his other hand, he drew a cigarette from the pouch at his side, and sparked a small flame with a snap of his fingers to light it.

Taking a long pull from his cigarette, he let out a chuckle, smoke escaping in little plumes with each exhalation. "Buncha kids, I'm tellin' ya. Ya'd think we were on a field trip, 'r somethin'." He smirked, and flicked his gaze to Sparrow, keeping an eye on her. He knew bugs of all kinds typically weren't her cup of tea, and considering her not-too-recent ordeal out here before, he intended to keep a close eye on her, just in case.

Her tail had not stopped wagging back and forth from the moment she had mounted Draconem and they had raced out to the sands. Nishi did not have to be an empath to feel the excitement that was thick in the air around  the Pilots. While the others made quick work of picking off the vehicles they wanted, the blue one managed to catch the Kitsuni's eye and she was immediately pouncing for it. It reminded her of Neeko so of course she had to have it.

She had only managed to lift it a foot off the ground before she felt it being tugged from her hands. "Hey! No fair, I had it first!" Nishi cried out before catching sight of the human wall that had stolen it from her. "Matt!" She whined in exasperation as she attempted to jump and steal it back from him. "A cryo should have blue. Are you going to be so mean to your old friend?"

Nishi laid on the guilt thick and heavy as she looked up to him with wide, watery eyes, flat ears, and a drooping tail. "I even came to your party all dressed up and everything. I don't even remember getting a hug. You're just so busy with your new friends." She sniffled for extra effect even as her eyes peaked through her lashes at where he was holding the car from her. She would play dirty if necessary, blue was going to be hers.

The newest recruit to the Hellions, indeed the freshest Pilot there, was positively buzzing with excitement as he dove for a car. Matt absolutely did not care at all which color he got, because it didn’t matter as long as he was getting to do his very first outing with his new squad – his first foray as a full functioning Pilot!

That said; he absolutely went for the blue car because Nishi obviously wanted it. Nothing else about taking that particular car mattered other than using it to give the tiny Kitsuni a hard time. She was only a year older than him and was still pretty fresh out of the ATC herself. They knew each other and he hadn’t seen or heard from her since she graduated – which only reminded him that he needed to make for sure he remembered to take the time to call, text, or visit his friends still stuck in Candyland.

“Nuh-uh.” Matt laughed, holding the car up high out of her reach, which was not hard to do when you were tall and she was such a shrimp. A very adorable shrimp that had totally shot him down when he’d tried it. It was a good thing he had on his flight helmet, it helped shield him slightly from that puppy gaze of hers.

“I so gave you a hug, you were the cutest lion, but you know me, always making some new friends and there were a lot of people hanging around to mingle with!” Yeah, he’d flown all the way down to Solarta and went home with two of them – who just so happened to also be there with them.

Matt turned his head when Yavul spoke about them wasting daylight squabbling over the car; he cracked up a bit but offered the blue RC to Nishi. “Here, take it you scamp. Sorry sir!”

There was a dark green one and he picked it up, more than ready to get started with this spider hunting party. All his years daydreaming about becoming a real Pilot had not prepared him for this one. Not in his wildest imaginings did he picture himself out in the Solartan desert hunting giant trapdoor spiders for his first real exercise of his skills as a soldier. Matt felt like he had quite a lot to prove on this trip.

Wouldn’t you know it too, but everyone else horse playing managed to damage one of the RCs. Well, it was more like fry one of the little cars. At the call for tech support he laughed a little, but jogged over to Locusta and offered her his own RC. “Here, you can take this one while I look at yours, but I make no promises. These things probably don’t stand up too well to being zapped.”
