Silent Spectre [Rhi-Rhi!]
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:32:57 pm »
The sun had moved 45 degrees to the west.
The temperature had risen five degrees.
Since this one had first stopped moving here.
Here was…blank. There was one mangled thing in the distance…twenty feet from this one’s location. It was a tree.
There was one tree in this direction, it was dead and black.
This one wasn’t sure if there were others behind them - they had not turned back to look yet.
The land was rather flat here. But the haze blocked looking further out. This one wasn’t sure what the haze was. It reflected the light sometimes. It was thick and brownish.
The sun had moved two degrees to the west.

The figure had been standing in the midst of the barren wasteland for a few hours now, staring in the same direction all the while. Before that, they had been walking with dedicated steps in this direction, but then they had stopped without warning or reason. It was surprisingly hard to get an estimate on the figure’s age or even their gender, even if one was close enough to see the details of their features. Their white body suit had been dirtied around the feet and legs from walking along the poisonous soil, their hands suffering a similar stained fate. The dry, acrid air tugged at short rusty red and white hair, yet the figure only blinked ever so often - their deep red eyes seemed unperturbed by the dangerous atmosphere, though it could also have been due to their heavy-lidded half closed position.
Once, earlier on, a prowling predator with far too many teeth had slunk by. Interestingly enough, however, it had simply passed right by the humanoid after a brief sniff in their direction. Generally anything caught out in the open would find themselves on the menu, but the rule seemed not to apply to the strange figure staring off into space.

Every so often, Cyrus just needed to get out.

It wasn't that things had even been quiet in the city; they hadn't. Between repairing the damage done in that big tremor, killing all the remaining nasties that had slithered their way in, and babysitting a motherfuckin' Pilot, Cyrus had his hands full. And it was for that reason that he just needed to get out.

Out into the Wastelands, where things were simple. Where it was just dirt and poison and beasties and killing shit. That was stuff he understood, stuff he could deal with, not trippy mindfuck Pilots with their psychic voodoo and politics and shit.

The air was calm, eerily still, but it could shift without warning. Cyrus didn't take chances; he was wearing a mask and protective gear--and lamenting the fact that he couldn't smoke with it on. Dust rose around his feet as he walked, a lance in hand and a gun holstered at his hip, though he doubted he'd need it. The thing he was tracking wouldn't go down with bullets; the bullets were for people, if he happened to run across any hostiles. Nah, this thing had to go down the good ol' fashioned way.

He'd seen some tracks and was now following them; this thing had to go. It had started getting too close to the settlement and he'd picked up hints that it was female and pregnant. Just what they needed--monster babies. Yeah, not happening on his watch.

He'd been following the thing for a while, even found some fresh dung proving it was close, when, as he climbed over a ridge, he saw it:

The creepiest motherfuckin' thing ever.

It was...a person.

A person with no protective gear. Dressed all in white. Just standing there.

And Cyrus's brain went straight to every creepy ghost and zombie story he'd ever heard. Which, out here? Miiiight not be that inaccurate. People could get infected with all sorts of nasty things. Rabies, radiation, fuck...maybe someone had finally created some zombie disease!

Cyrus came to a cautious stop, far enough away not to make out any specific features (probably didn't help he'd approached it from behind) but close enough to be heard if he shouted, which probably wasn't the most intelligent thing to do right then, but it was the first impulse that sprang to mind because there was no way in fuck he was going near that thing until he knew it wasn't a zombie or a ghost or a vampire or a mutated horror.

"Hey! You! Ya need help over there?"

Hopefully if it turned it wouldn't reveal a face full of teeth.

The sun had moved five degrees to the west.
The temperature had dropped by one degree.
There was an other entity present.
This one felt them before they approached, felt the faint pressure of their mind. It was a human-type, not a creature-type.
Creature-types had a scratchy feeling, they were loud, they were instinct.
Human-types had a murmur, a suffocation, a sound through water.

This one was scared. A moment. Scared of the human-type.
So many murmurs. A wet blanket over the face. Distant sound amplified and muted. Too many scientists. Scientists. The ones who brought pain. The ones who brought screaming. The ones who brought cold and hot. The ones without a smell. This one’s head was splitting open. Skin splitting open. Bone shivering and splintering and screaming. It was red and it was white. There was blue, and then it was cold, and then it was hot. Everything was melting.

The words carried through the dry air, despite the regulator Cyrus was wearing to keep him safe. The figure heard him it would seem, for they turned quietly around to face him. No face full of teeth here - the only odd thing were the blue lines running down their cheeks from their eyes down their neck, like a circuit board. Seemingly tired crimson eyes stared unfocused at the man, perhaps seeing him, perhaps not.
“This one does not require help. This one is in no danger presently.”
Like the strange, lovely yet androgynous face and body, the figure’s voice was equally even pitched and impossible to peg one way or another.
“That one is in danger. That one should move. The one with the many other scratching instincts inside is close.”
Of course, it was highly improbable that Cyrus would have any idea what in the hell Sixten was saying, and the warning was likely completely lost on him.

At least until the rumbling snarl of something large and unhappy unfurled behind him a moment later.

Oh thank whatever old dudes and broads in the sky were watching out for him that day, that person was a person. At least, they (she? It was hard to tell from this distance, but she was tiny and looked like a 'she' so he'd go with 'she') looked like a person and had no monstrous teeth or deformities that he could spot. Still bloody fucking brainless to be out here with no protection just standing around like that, but it would be like a woman to do something stupid like that for gods knew why.

Though she might be ill; she didn't look so good, face sleepy with those damned weird markings, like nothing he'd ever seen before. Might be a refugee, might be lost, and certainly needed help, regardless of her response. Cyrus rolled his eyes at her words. Fucking brainless.

Or mental. This one, that one, scratching things...he wasn't even gonna ask.

Shaking his head, he took a step toward her. "Riiight, yeah. I'll get right on tha--"

A rumbling, vibrating snarl cut him off and he felt a puff of hot, rancid air hit his back, then another. Three guesses as to what that was!

Fuck my life.

He spun just as the creature charged him, lance extended and feet braced, but the creature was smart. Rather than spear itself, it leaped aside, surprisingly agile, and snapped at the pole with jaws that sported multiple rows of jagged, shark-like teeth. He tried to move, tried to angle it so it missed and got a lance jammed in its mouth and down the back of its throat, but it was quicker; its teeth grabbed hold and, with a rippling roar that sprayed thick saliva in Cyrus's face, it started to wildly thrash its head back and forth like a dog shaking a toy. Which wasn't far from how it felt; the thing was huge, at least the size of a small elephant, with bulky muscles, far too many bulging eyes, and long, knife-like claws that raked the earth and the air as it tried to get at its human prey.

It was all Cyrus could do to hang on.

Flat crimson eyes watched as the human-type was attacked by the creature-type. This one had warned the human-type, but the human-type was not very fast. Creature-types usually were much faster, like the loud thoughts that scratched and scrabbled in the air.
The one with many scratchings on the inside was very angry, it wanted to kill the human-type, to eat it and feed all the scratchings inside.
The human-type’s thoughts sloshed around, just like his body was being shaken. It was so hard to understand them, everything so muffled and humid, like too many worms together all tied together never one making it up to the surface. The creature-types were much more loud and clear and this one never had any problem understanding.

“That one has many others scratching inside. That one does not like human-type, that one wishes to eat human-type and feed the others.”
Sixten finally moved forward, taking calm and steady steps toward the battle raging between the weaker human and stronger beast. There was no inflection on their face, no emotion, just a calm observation of things going on outside of itself.
“The creature-types are the ones that live out in the blank land. Human-types come up from the holes. That one should have stayed in the hole and stayed safe.”
The screaming of the beasts’ instinctual thoughts reverberated around inside Sixten’s head. It was so much rage and frothing and a need to tear and shred with teeth and claws, to feel the warmth of the blood and the squish of the meat and the crunch of the bones. Sixten was so near that they could all but feel it, taste it, experience it in their own mind from the intensity of the mutated creature’s desires.

This one had a broken understanding that it too was a human-type. They sometimes wondered if their thoughts were also heavy and wet and distant…but then, who else but themselves could understand such things? They could not hear their own thoughts, and so they did not know what they were like. But the human-type struggling and breathing hard and fighting for everything that he was had fallen back into that creature-type place.
The loud instinct, the scrabbling noise, the simplicity of understanding.
Sixten tilted their head, understanding the human-type finally, and then simply looked at the beast now shoving Cyrus’s poorly equipped human body back.
All Sixten had to do was the same as the creature-type - think loud and hard at one basic thing.
Run.

The creature suddenly broke off the attack, wheeled about on it’s clawed hind feet, and tore off into the distance like a bat out of hell. It did not look back or pause even once, until eventually it disappeared into the hazy horizon.
Sixten blinked blankly then at the man, momentarily distracted by a particle of dust that was swimming around in front of their vision.
They simply stood there silently for a moment, unfocused, before seeming to come back to themselves.
“That one is no longer in danger.”

Cyrus could hear the person talking, but couldn't make out the words over the sounds of the creatures snarls and grunts, the roar of his own pulse and breathing, and the rush of wind against his ears as the thing started to shake him. Listening kind of wasn't his top priority right then, though if he had breath to spare he would have shouted for her to get the fuck out of here. She was crazy!

And he was so fucked.

This was not the thing he'd been tracking. The thing he'd been tracking was smaller, dog-sized. Wolf-sized. A creature dangerous in a pack, which was why it absolutely could not be allowed to bear young, but easy to take down as a lone monster. This thing? He hadn't been prepared for this. No one person could be. This thing would take a group, an entire hunting party, and weapons stronger and sturdier than what he had.

The only reason he wasn't dead yet was it was playing with its prey.

And playtime was soon over.

With a sudden snarl, it snapped its head to the side and Cyrus went flying, landing hard on the earth and rolling several feet--without his spear. There was a loud crunch and Cyrus looked up just in time to see the beast splinter the weapon with one clean bite, two broken halves falling to the ground. Then it began to advance. Shit, shit, fuck! He tried to scramble to his feet but knew he wouldn't even be standing before it was on him, ripping and tearing and--

Suddenly, the creature froze.

Then, just like that, it turned and bolted.

Cyrus stared after it, eyes wide and breath coming in short, panicked pants through his respirator. Then the girl spoke--she was still there?--and this time he did understand the words.

"What?"

There was 2% humidity in the air.
The air was dry.
It rustled and danced, tugged and pulled.
Toxicity was a level three danger.
Visibility was at one hundred feet.

There was a long pause, as though the figure had not heard Cyrus’ abrupt question. Half lidded red eyes stared blankly ahead at nothingness, or perhaps at everything at once.
Finally, they blinked slowly, and seemed to finally see the man panting on the ground.
“That one is no longer in danger.”
Proving to have heard him, the odd figure calmly repeated what they had last said, though that did not mean the gruff Teinar scout would actually understand even the second time around.
“That one should return to the holes that go into the ground. Back with the other human-types.”

"Uhh..." Yeah, that wasn't just creepy or anything. Clearly, there was something wrong with this girl, some wiring got knocked a little loose in her head or something. But right then, Cyrus was too pumped up on adrenaline to care--or to even really focus on much of anything. He was still reeling from what had just happened and why. Shit like that didn't just--bloodthirsty monsters didn't just decide not to eat their prey!

Slowly, cautiously, he rose to his feet and dusted off his trousers, limbs still a little shaky. Yeah, he didn't believe for an instant that he was no longer in danger. Even if that thing had run off, there were more like it. He could agree with her observation that he should get out of dodge, though.

She just didn't seem to be including herself in that sentence.

Marching over to her, he reached out to take her arm. "You're right, and that means you, too."

The figure did not react as Cyrus marched over, their dulled red eyes still staring straight ahead at the dead landscape. There really wasn’t anything going on in their mind. It was white noise - a blank expanse of nothing, with a soft humming buzz. Not in their ears, but in their mind - a constant gentle pressure at the back of their skull. It was peaceful, serene. No darting thoughts, no scratching instincts, no suffocating wetness. Just white pressure.

And then an abrupt intake of dry air, red eyes opening wide, so wide that there was white all around the red. Prickling, searing sensation spread in a clustered area of their flesh. It was…this one’s arm. Yes. Arm.
Another deep intake of air. Wide eyes turned down to look, to see the cause of the strange pressure that made the blood pulse deep against the bone. It was the human-type’s hand. Fingers pressed into flesh, muscles contracted, bones moved by the tendons.

Sixten was entirely unable to properly compute the sensation of being touched.
They had no memory of being touched. Their mind did not know how to comprehend it.
Instead of replying, they just continued to stare at Cyrus’s calloused hand, as though it were a strange object of wonder and mystery - a thing causing a feeling that this one had no way of describing.

...Well that wasn't freaky as shit.

Cyrus stared at the girl, unnerved out by her unresponsiveness and the way she stared at his hand like it were an alien thing, but there was no time to wonder too deeply about it. That thing was still out there, and perhaps others like it. They needed to get below ground now.

Since she didn't struggle or protest, Cyrus took that as his sign to take the lead. He pulled at her arm, urging her to go with him. "C'mon, now. Move."

This one’s pulse was 35% slower than that one’s. Blood double throbbed at the skin, two flows, two streams. A push and a pause and a push and a pause and a push and a pause, fluttering fast, the thumping of one muscle in this one’s ears. Flesh was dimpled, pushed, pinpricked by those digits that were not this one’s, but the other’s. Still the pressure, the sensation, unrelenting and unchanging.

At least until Cyrus tugged on Sixten’s arm, urging them to follow. Their eyes, which could not widen any more, remained stuck in swimming pools of white with orbs of red. The new sensation…it pulled on skin, muscles, bones…the joint stretched, widened apart, arm stretched out to it’s full length.
For a moment it seemed like the strange wanderer was simply going to stay rooted while their arm was pulled taught, as if unaware that pain might follow if they did not attempt to join into the forward motion.

‘Move’
That was a word this one knew. Move. It was an order.
Order received, and understood.
“Understood.”
And then the slender white clad figure was walking along behind Cyrus with a somewhat stiff, unnatural gait, as if they had abruptly forgotten how to properly walk since the last time they had a minute ago.

Maybe her head was broken. Being out here in the wastes like this, unprotected...yeah, that would have to do weird things to a person's brain. Staring down at her outstretched arm, Cyrus huffed in frustration and was about to take more drastic measure--like throwing her over his shoulder and carrying her out of here--but then something seemed to have clicked in that odd head of hers and she began to move. Said she understood.

Ooookay.

He pulled her after him, urging her to pick up her pace. It wasn't far to the tunnel he'd come out of and he made a bee-line for it, eyes scanning the terrain around them for signs of any beasts lurking about.

"What's your name, girl?" he asked as they went, keeping his voice low but loud enough for her to hear.

There was a 2.45 inch layer of particulate toxins forming a crust on the dead earth.
Chemical properties were diverse.
Density was 65%.

That one was making clear footprints in the crunchy dust, a stamp of passing. Dulled red eyes watched with a peculiar sense of…something, something…this one did not know the word for it. But still they watched, gaze glued to Cyrus’ feet.
The insistence to move faster was lost on the pale figure, their arm still stretched out taught under the pulling. Their gait, at the very least, had relaxed somewhat and gained a more normal stride.

The words hit this one’s ears, piercing through a muffled blanket sharply, straight through. They did not lift their gaze from the oblong impressions being left. Their lips parted slightly, but no words came out. They were in there, lost and rattling, just out of reach. Reach reach reach….no…no it was best to just sit still. They will come to you. Like so many butterflies.
Sixten blinked slowly, then finally spoke quietly.
“Name: Girl?”

"Eh?" Cyrus stopped and looked back at her, blinking in surprise. "What? No. Don't be a smartass. I asked what your name is, not that your name is girl. So, what's your name?"

They had reached an entrance. The tunnel was below them, just hidden beneath rock and dust. He didn't wait for her to answer before he went to work moving the debris out of the way, finally uncovering the door, and he slid it open and then motioned for her to drop down ahead of him.

She could answer while they walked.

The words snaked through, wormed around in dampness, like wet cotton. They squirmed and squiggled but could not make it through. This one did not understand - the questions were not linear enough to pierce into the mind. They wobbled and wiggled and went to places outside of this one’s ability to see, hear, smell, or touch.
Name. Name? The definition was there, a 2D understanding of what it was. But the question was impossible for this one to answer.
It was only blank. There was nothing in that space.
All that this one had was a number.

“6-10.”
The words were flat and inflectionless, cold as the numbers themselves. Dulled red eyes watched the man as he shoved debris aside and uncovered a door. A door but it was not vertical. This one’s mind reeled, backed up, turned about. A door on the  ground. A flat door that went…where? This one’s brain couldn’t quite conceptualize an opening into the earth - a thing that should be solid.
Then the door slid open into a gaping blackness.

The white clad figure took a jerky step away, the square of darkness causing some deep involuntary fear to take over. It was not just an opening into underground tunnels - to their broken, disjointed mind, it was a pit of shadow that would devour them.

"Sixten? What kinda name is that?" Cyrus said, making a face. What kind of parent named thei kid a bunch of numbers? Hell, "Girl" didn't sound like so bad a name after all!

But before he could pursue that line of thought much further, Sixten was moving away from the entrance.

The fuck.

Cyrus moved to block her, grabbing her shoulder once more and turning her back toward it. "The fuck ya doin'? Ya wanna go back there? Back to those monster motherfuckers? C'mon, girl, be smart. Get inside."

To him, the hole was just an entrance to the city, nothing scary or ominous about it--but he was a person who had also spent his entire life underground. To him, it was the above-ground that was far more lethal; it was the wide-open space above his head that was unnerving, threatening to suck him up into the sky. He felt far more at home in the closed-in, tight spaces of below and could comprehend no other way.

Black and slithering a gaping black chasm a mouth leading to somewhere deep and dark and below everything. Clambering crawling scratching and then light and tears stinging bright a dry dead scent and rattling wheezing strangling wind.
Like being born.
Like dying.

The pressure again, into flesh and compressing soft things toward the bone and the sinew. That one was holding this one’s shoulder, driving them back, toward the doorway on the ground. In the ground. To the ground.
A perfect shadow square staring up with no eyes.

As if they had never been afraid in the first place, the oddly silent figure allowed themselves to be led back toward the hole. With no further resistance, and a complete lack of understanding, Sixten simply stepped out into the black and fell straight down like a rock pitched into a pool.
If there were some manner of climbing down available, Sixten had entirely missed it.

"Wait!"

Too late.

Aaaand then there she went. Down the hole. Cyrus sank his face into his hand, half horrified and half exasperated. One minute she doesn't want to go down the hole, the next minute she's flinging herself down it all suicidal-like. Goddamn.

Luckily, he wasn't a long drop down--around six feet and dark because there was no immediate light, but nothing she couldn't survive. With a deep breath--because gods, it looked like he would need every ounce of patience he had--Cyrus climbed down the ladder and secured the entrance, enveloping them in pure darkness.

"Shit, ya crazy girl! There was a ladder, y'know," he said, and there was the sounds of fabric rustling, then a metallic click followed by a flicker of light. Cyrus had a lighter on him, and he held it out in front of him to look for Sixten. "Ya alright?"

Pulsing. Pulsing. Pulsing. A throb just under the earlobes. In the throat. Throbbing. Consistent.
A heartbeat. The blood squishing forward, pushed from behind. Rhythmic. Pulsing. Throbbing. A dull thumping, heard.
This place swallowed the light and the sound. Just the heartbeat.
Alone alone alone.

The strange figure was standing a small ways away from the ladder Cyrus clambered down, seemingly unharmed. In the pitch black, lines of dimly glowing blue were more easily visible than before, even through the white bodysuit. The ran all along Sixten’s body, and like an ancient deep see fish, they stood out in the inky blackness around them.
The weak flickering of the lighter barely touched the surrounding, but Sixten hadn’t needed it in the first place. Those seemingly tired red eyes had easily switched into a mode most suited for night vision, and they looked straight on at Cyrus with little trouble.
“Ladder unnecessary. There has been no damage recorded on this one.”

"This time," Cyrus grumbled, perturbed from that small freak-out. His heart was still beating fast; people had broken ankles for far less, not to mention jumping all gung-ho into a black pit with who knows what at the bottom. Of course, Cyrus knew what was at the bottom, but she didn't. There could have been spikes down there for all she knew! To keep monsters and shit out or something.

"Just don't do it again, got it? Be smart, girl! If there's a fuckin' ladder, use the fuckin' ladder, don't try and be some damned flashy show-off or...uh..."

He trailed off. His eyes had adjusted enough during his mini-rant that he could make out the glowing lines on her body, eerie and unnatural in the darkness. The light from his lighter was weak enough that it didn't wash it out.

"...The fuck? Now ya glow?"
