In search of food
« on: May 23, 2010, 12:11:50 am »
He wouldn't go anywhere near any form of water again. At least for a while anyway. It was a dirty trick that food had played on him: swimming away just as he was about to grab for it. It had been bad enough that he had to stick his arm in the dirty water. Enough to make him fear falling in and drowning. Then the food he wanted had to move away just as he leaned in a little. Almost made him fall in. He really would've ended up drowning too.

Now he had to find new food though and it wasn't the easiest thing to do. Everything was hiding or already dead. No fair for him. He wanted to rip and tear at something to. "Rip and tear at fffood." Felt mumbled as he looked around a little. He never minded chasing food but that only worked if the food was in sight first.

He sighed and eventually stopped and plopped down as his stomach gave a growl of protest. "Fffood isss no fair." His ears pinned back against his head a little as one of his feet came up to scratch at them. He placed his foot back on the ground after he was satisfied and glanced around a little, his ears perking up once more. Even if the food was hiding surely he'd be able to hear it. Food couldn't stay silent for long.

His ears perked up a bit more and his tails stood up straight when he heard some form of rustling. "Fffood~?" Felt quickly looked around only to spot what looked like an area of overgrown plants. Lots of overgrown plants. A smile worked it's way to his lips. Tall plants meant hiding places for food.

Felt was immediately up on all fours, hunching close to the ground as he sneakily inched towards the edge of the plants. The closer he got the odder the plants seemed though. He stopped just as he was at the edge of them and stared at them for a second. "Plantsss...are plantsss hiding fffood?" Felt questioned, still staring at them as if expecting an answer.

"Plantsss must be hiding fffood." he said, smiling a bit again. He shook off the odd feeling he was getting and pushed himself up onto two feet. "Okay~ To fffood." he said happily as he took the first few steps into an area he had no idea about but an area he was sure had food for him.

Ardghal’s alarm bells went off instantly. The dryad had been nestled in between two large roots.  He always kept close to the giant tree, the entity he was bonded to. A cocoon of plants enwrapped him; keeping him from whatever harm could manifest from his own creations - lest they become rebellious. He highly doubted it. But one did not survive in the wastelands by trusting everything he saw. His protection slid back like thousands of snakes, hissing into the ground as if they had never existed. He unfolded his body; the movement wholly unnatural as he stood up. There were no bones in his legs. Only contorted shapes remained to give the image that he had something humanoid about him. In the belly of truth, there was nothing human. He threw that away long ago.

His eyes fell on his forest. Black and sick like the way he had left it before succumbing to sleep. There was a slight wind above the tops of the trees carrying the thick fumes they always did, colouring the sky with a cloudy yellow. Ardghal could remember, just barely, what a cloudless sky looked like during the day. Reminders of that sky laid in the one eye not mutated and in the bright roses sprouting from stems on his back. In the entire forest only he, himself, possessed that precious blue. The everything shuttered with him as he sighed.

He could think of old times later. For now, he had a wretched thing to deal with.

At the edge of his territory he could feel it creeping. The vegetation hummed to him. It was a simple mutant of the wastes. A common disrupter of his sleep and of his good moods. His lips curled up in irritation; a bestial expression that all too often marred his features. It soon quickly faded as he came to the realisation that he could make this worth is while.

It was time to play a game.

“Just how smart are you?”  He said, uncertain if the mutant could hear his telepathic voice - and if it could, would it know what was being said? Doubtfully. The most intelligent things the dryad had come to witness were those blasted twisted unicorns.  At times they could give even him headaches.

Ardghal concentrated. He shut his eyes, furrowed his one eyebrow, and placed his human hands on the trunk of his bonded tree. He saw everything it did, if it would let him. With each passing decade it was getting more difficult to reach inside its soul and tap into their link. However, it was not closed yet. He could still see.

   And there it was.

What the bloody hell was it? He hadn’t seen anything like it before! A wave of exhilaration rushed through him. Oh this was going to be interesting! He sprung up plants through the area where the creature was - like an obstacle course. Yet, unlike an obstacle course, Ardghal had a hold on the controls.

Felt had not heard the telepathic voice at all. He had no form of those abilities so range was a very important factor when it came to him actually hearing or noticing that something was being said...in his head. Other than his own thoughts anyway. Most things in the waste had no form of communicating anyway though so for him to hear something uncommon would mean he'd have to be face to face or at least somewhere closer to whatever was speaking. Now if it just talked like he did then it would be far easier for him to notice because of his ears.

He had just gotten into the plants when they suddenly moved, causing him to jump a little and move forward quickly. That caused him to almost run right into some kind of thorny plant though. With a hiss he quickly stopped and moved back a little, digging his paw like feet into the ground. "Plantsss are bad." He jumped over the thorny plant and only cast a small glance back at it as he walked forward again.

Another hiss came out though when more plants were suddenly in his way in some form. Not all of which could be jumped over either. How irritating. His ears pinned back against his head and his tails swished back and forth in a rather irritated matter, making an audible 'thump' noise as they smacked against the ground or something sturdy. "Plantsss mussst be hiding fffood." To move around in such ways meant they had to be hiding what he wanted or protecting it and he was determined to find it.

Felt took a couple steps back before getting a running leap over the first set of things he could jump over. From there he used anything sturdy that wouldn't bend or move under his weight as a way of getting around other things whether it be by jumping off it or climbing up it a little to pass other plant obstacles. Even if it was irritating, the running was exciting. It was like chasing after food that he had let run off for fun.

The animal was a tad more clever than what Ardghal was expecting. Far more agile, flexible with its movements unlike the many mutants he had seen where their bodies never obeyed their mind’s objectives. They were awkward, their limbs would splay and would often have more joints than what was needed in a creature. He felt pity for them. Evolution in the wastes was never kind, but for some it was far more cruel. But this…This was different. This would be the challenge he craved for, what he was waiting for to test out the sheer ferocity of his powers.

“You have a chance to turn back, however once you step too far into Eden you are ours.” He said, he claimed everything that stepped too far into his territory. It seemed to be a predatory stance, especially when he knew he could overpower them with little effort. It was a bestial arrogance perhaps. Or the impression that he could survive far better than it could. Despite his words, he did not sense the animal stopping its travel - through the use of his psychic powers, his range, or through the whispers from the forest around him. It didn’t even seem to hesitate. Either it was stupid, or blindly determined. The dryad thought about that phrase for a moment. He couldn’t see the difference between the two.

   Very well…

He could tell where it was. It was moving quickly, however,  he could change that. The forest shifted under his will as easily as one would part blades of grass. Every bush, tree, every branch and leaf glided to where he wanted them to be. There was no sound of roots being torn away from the ground. Just a light rustle, as if a small wind had blown through.

   He would awaken his beasts.

Again the voice was not heard by Felt. There was a little tingly or sort of like an itch at the back of his mind but it was easily ignored. More like he never really even noticed it. He wasn't concentrating on it. He was more focused on getting to the food he was positive the plants were hiding. There didn't seem to be anything other than the plants around him at the moment though. Just how far in was the food? Whatever he found had better be good or he was going to be upset for having to go through all the trouble, even if it was exciting.

One of the plants he was using as leverage shifted underneath his foot at that point, causing him to slip up and tumble forward to the ground. Felt let out a hiss as he rolled forward, only to come to a stop flat on his stomach. He was quickly up on his feet again though, ears pinned back against his head once more. His tails thumped against the ground as he glared at the moving plants. "Unfffair."

That was fine though, he'd just tear through whatever he could at that point. Smaller plants would be easy to tear through and make a new path. Trees would be a problem but if he could keep balance long enough he could just climb them. "Felt will have fffood~" he hissed out before smiling wickedly as he narrowed his eyes at the moving forest.

He would not be defeated by an inferior creature. Ardghal would always assume it was inferior, despite the fact the only part of the wastes he could see was the one  he claimed for his own. He did not truly know if there was something greater than himself. Though he highly doubted it. He also highly doubted the monster, who bade no heed to the telepathic calls he sent out, could combat him, even for a moment. Yet, it was not himself he wanted to strain, at least not in the physical aspect.

The forest continued to shift, he knew of the movements of the creature from the whispers flowing along a stream of consciousness embedded in the world around him. But he could not see it, and the intelligence of vegetation could only stretch so far before it became unbearably thin. Which is why he revelled in being able to have a real live subject to test what he called a new intelligence. His tail was fidgeting, nearly lashing out at his surroundings as excitement built. In front of him a plethora of vines, thorny and a sick black colour twisted in on each other. The sound could be compared to the crack of bones as they snapped into place. And when it fell silent, except for the constant hum of the forest around him, there stood two large intimidating masses.

They were indistinguishable as anything, no living creature looked like them. Rather they were a mixture; a product of a mind that tried to visualize an animal that had long since died out and their memory of such thing had faded long ago. Ardghal called them Lions. And they were his attempt to rebuild what was lost to Aedolis’ hubris.

“Go,” he said and the monstrous plants leaped off, their limbs clumsy. “Do whatever you wish.”

Felt spit out a leaf or some sort of shrubbery he had gotten in his mouth while tearing away a new path for himself. Leaves were like vegetables or as close to that as he could get and vegetables were nasty. Meat was good. He stuck out his tongue a little and wiped at it a little with what could be called a front paw but was careful not to rip at his own tongue with the claws positioned on them. "Blech.." Nasty. That taste wouldn't leave him either until he had something better to eat.

A low growl emitted from his throat when he noticed that in his pause that the plants had shifted over the area he had just cleared. It wasn't fair undoing the work he spent time destroying. He went to destroy the annoying plant life in his way once more but stopped when it seemed the plants were shying away from something. Not him though. They would've been tilted away from him if they were, right? It seemed logical to him.

The large ears on the top of his head twitched a little and it was then that he heard the noise of something getting closer to him. Not a small something either. The noises were far too noisy for something small. His ears flattened out on his head for a moment as he waited to see what was coming.

What he did happen to see was not what he was expecting at all. Two large..plant...thin gs had emerged from the shifting plants. He didn't know what they were and actually he didn't want to stand in their path long enough to find out. They were in the way of him getting to food and that was really all that mattered. All he needed to do was get around them. He took a few steps back before quickly climbing up a nearby tree. Surely that would be tall enough for him to just jump over them. His tails swished back and forth in an agitated manner as he watch the plant creatures. "Thisss isss irritating.." he mumbled, baring his teeth at the creatures as if it would scare them.

One of the more loved characteristics of his creations was that they felt no fear. They shifted through the foliage without concern of where their disfigured feet would take them, they only knew one thing and one thing only: There was an intruder. Their master asked them to find it.

Ardghal's own senses reached out to them; he pressed his psychic abilities along every twist and curve of their bodies - like they were an extension of his own. He felt the undergrowth beneath, what he would call "paws" - they were nothing but a plethora of gnarled roots. The gentle brush of the other plants against their bodies as the swiftly made their way through the forest. To a viewer they were simply melting into the background as if all they were, were leaves being blown by wind.

The creature they were following had been in their sights and disappeared.

The dryad took the information of what his creations were telling him, what the forest was telling him. The creature was attempting to snarl, its breath against the leaves of the tree it perched on told him that. The way its claws dug so carelessly into the bark of the branch left him feeling uneasy. Such reckless moves. It had already damaged the shrubbery. Ardghal was going more annoyed with it by the moment.

Without an order they started to climb the tree. No doubt it would run once more. ”Lead it to us.”

He knew he wouldn't scare the creatures with his menacing look. However he didn't know that the creatures would start climbing up the tree he was in. The fact that they were climbing due to their size was a surprise of its own. Felt glared at the creatures as they fumbled up the tree with their large limbs and let out a hiss. He dug his claws into the branch he was on before jumping out of it to the ground below.

Stupid creatures. They were also making things harder for him. He glanced back at them in the tree and hissed again before running ahead. He didn't have time to cut through the plants and bushes so he was pretty much running blind through the taller ones since he was running on all fours like a cat would rather than on two feet. It was faster running this way though.

Thankfully the plants seemed to thin out more towards what he could guess was the middle of the forest place. He hadn't heard noise of the large creatures following him either. Maybe they were still stuck in the tree. Felt stopped once he was out of the overgrowth and just sat down, panting a little. His ears perked straight up to hear any sort of sounds that would be reason for him to start running again.

Nothing.

Felt let out a puff of air and relaxed a little. He glanced around at his surroundings and was happy to find a rather large tree, one that was actually quite bigger than the previous ones he had seen. That would be a good tree to look out from! Surely he was near the food now. He was on his feet in a second and climbing the tree, not caring about anything other than finding food then.

The distance was closing quickly between them. Ardghal's tail thrashed about the enclosed space involuntarily. This was irritating. It was irritating. The creature his creations were bounding after in the forest they knew better than it did were losing speed from having their limbs caught on branches and roots of trees - they had no self-preservation, he would make a note to work on that - and tearing them off completely, Ardghal had to expend mental energy to rebuild them with haste. He did not want the creature diverting off further away from him and causing more damage.

A surge in the forest around him signalled the arrival even before the creature burst through the foliage themselves and into the clearing. Ardghal readied himself with a defensive stance, his clawed feet digging into the ground below him and feeling the grass seemingly alive with its own mind wrap around them. If it went to charge at him, he had enough power in his body to stop it. His creations dissolved back into the forest before even reaching back to their master.

The creature itself seemed to...Not notice him. And it appeared to be almost feline. Almost. It bordered on something else as well. Nearly human. Like himself. And unlike many of the twisted wasteland monsters who underwent such disturbing evolution in a matter of decades not millions of years. It did not have the same look.

It glance to him. Ardghal caught its large black eyes, though it didn't see him. "Ah..." he said, "Perhaps you are blind." or at the very least lacking something.

He didn't expect what would happen next. The grounding of his feet gave way as he stumbled back, scrambling to find a hold on the creature's torso to pry it off of him. "Fool! Do you not see what you are climbing! I am not a tree!" Technically.

There was a voice in the back of his mind. This time it was more than a tingle. He could hear it. But again he chose to ignore it. It was saying something about blind..or something. It didn't matter. All that mattered was him finding food. His stomach was starting to grumble.

He wasn't expected to be stopped in mid climb though. Felt clawed at the aira  little as he was grabbed and held away from what he had assumed was a tree. There was the voice again too. His ears perked up and twisted and turned like radar. Where was it coming from? He looked around a little. Not around him. It was in his head again. That was when he thought about looking to see what had grabbed him.

Felt glanced down and stared at the tree he had tried to climb. It was what had stopped him from climbing. But...how..? His ears flattened against his head a little and he bared his teeth at it, growling a little. "Let go, tree." he hissed. How the tree was alive was a bit cool and surprising but it wasn't enough to deter him from what he wanted. "Felt wantsss fffood. Let go."

How did he succumb to this? This travesty of dignity. He held on as tightly as he could to the creature that clawed and squirmed against his body, tearing at the roots emerging from what skin he had left, and rudely using the bones of his exposed ribcage as steps.

The forest around Ardghal began to move and whisper in accordance to the threat, or what it perceived as a threat. Bushes were uprooting themselves, limbs of trees were stretching closer towards the dryad; reaching out desperately trying to save their creator. An image fit for a nightmare were it in any other mind. Ardghal barred his teeth back at the creature- a cruel smile.

"You do not order us." Roots lashed out from the very ground below him, wrapping their earthly bodies around the limbs of the intruder. He had no sympathy, not for those who defile his haven and expect him to play nice. "Know your place." With the slightest flicker of a mental command, the creature was dragged off of him with much relief, and strapped to the ground like a prisoner.

Felt's ears stayed pinned back against his head. After Ardghal had barred his teeth back, Felt just snarled at him. His nose wrinkled up a little because of the action and his teeth showed a bit more. It was just an animal thing to see who was more threatening. There were many things about his animal like side that he obviously couldn't get rid of including the instincts.

The words fell on deaf ears because at that point the cat mutant was aware of the plants grabbing at him. His ears stood straight up as he let out a growl from his throat and lashed at with his claws at what he could. At least for a few moments anyway. There were too many of the plants and not enough claws for him so he suddenly ended up bound by them. The growl grew louder as the patches of fur he had fluffed up a bit and the fluff at the end of his tails poofed out.

Another thing was, he was stubborn. He wouldn't give up until he was tired out. Giving up meant dying in any place animals lived. It just happened to be a worse factor in a land warped by chemicals and other potent things. Even when he was stuck to the ground, his tails lashed out about wildly as he struggled against the plants holding him to get back to his feet.

Because of his wild attempts to get free, Felt was quick to tire out. His breaths came out quickly for a bit as he panted a little. His no longer lashed out wildly either and were simply being swatted against the ground, causing audible thumps each time they hit. "Tree! Let Felt go!" he commanded, glaring up at the tree creature. I want fffood! Felt knowsss tree isss hiding ffood! Let Felt have it!"

"My name," he snarled, "is not tree." The thing didn't deserve to know his name. Ardghal circled it, his tail brushing up against the feline's limbs. Intimidation. He had played with the creature and it didn't follow his rules. It made him angry, frustrated, and flared the animalistic instincts that were always pushing against his logical mind. With a sort of sadistic glee, the dryad watched it struggle against the roots holding firmly to its body, until it was out of breath. It had spark, he had to admit. He did not see fear in its eyes, but the same anger that lace his own.

He knelt down, his twisted body cracking and groaning like trees caught in winds they could not withstand. Ardghal cupped the creature's chin in his hands, though he doubted that force had to be used to keep it looking at him. It was already intent on doing that. But, it was about power - control. "There is no food here. What you smell is your own hubris that makes you think you can trespass and demand what is not yours. We do not exist to serve you."

Felt hissed as he felt the tree creature's tail brush up against him. If he could he would've snapped out to bite the tail but it was unfortunately out of his reach. So all he could do was let out angry sounds that were pretty much just empty threats. "You are Tree." Felt hissed. "You look like one so you are Tree." It would not tell him what to call it so he would call the tree what he felt like calling it. Even if he was in no authoritative position to be making demands...

When the creature touched him, Felt hissed and snarled, his lips curling back to expose his sharp teeth again. It did not matter who had the upper hand, Felt was determined to show that he had not entirely given up and would be a thorn in the Tree's side. "There is fffood. Not hubrisss. Felt doesss not even know what hubrisss smellsss like." he hissed. "Felt saysss Tree will give me fffood so Tree will give Felt fffood."  Felt snapped his teeth at the tree then even though chances were he'd come no where close to biting it. His tails swatted wildly at the ground then, the thumps against the ground becoming more frequent. "Let Felt go."

It was cute when creatures thought they could get away with such blatant disrespect. Though, not cute in the way most would consider. Ardghal did not find it amusing or endearing, as was obvious by his demeanour and by the vehemence that seemed to steam off of him. In fact, it wasn't cute at all. Why did he even think that?

The creature couldn't even say please.

"Your use of the third person is highly irritating." He said, it was capable of speech and yet didn't have a lick of concern of how it spoke. At the very least the dryad could try to teach it manners. Ardghal's hand went from the creature's chin and up to it's feline like ears, ignoring it's attempts to bite him. He grabbed them and used the force to pin Felt's head to the ground. Pain. Pain was always a good learning tool. "You will apologize before we even consider speaking to you like a being who can understand. And perhaps we will let go."

Not likely. But it didn't have to know that.

"Third person? Felt doesn't know what Tree is talking about." Felt hissed, still very unhappy about his situation. "Tree stop using funny words." Again he would continue to demand even though he had no place for it. Especially since it was obvious he would not get anything he wanted. It of course just made him want to try harder to get his way.

When Ardghal touched his ears, Felt stiffened up for a moment. His tails fluffed out a bit as well and even stopped pounding against the ground. His ears were sensitive like any feline's ears were to being touched. Even scratching them himself was odd and because of that he would never do it too long.

Once they were pulled, Felt hissed out and grit his teeth a little. He didn't dare pull back against Ardghal either as he used his ears to pull his head to the ground. If he pulled his head up it would just cause more pain to his ears and there was no way he wanted that! His tails stayed fluffed out but they went back to lashing out against the ground. "Felt has done nothing wrong!" he hissed out loudly. "Let me go, Tree! Tree hurts Felt!"

Arghal's grip remained on Felt's ears, his hand not wavering in strength. The creature neared himself in size, if the dryad lapsed in his conviction, even for a moment, the scales of fate could be tipped away from his favour. At the very least, those were what his instincts told him. And those, those were overpowering. In long stretches of time where he found himself in absence of direct influence from them, he nearly felt like he was not a monster. However, the quick acts of aggression he could not control readily reminded him of his nature.

He knew how valuable Felt was. And yet he wanted nothing more than to see the creature die for the marring of his pride.

The dryad attempted to use his telepathy on the creature, not something he is accustomed to, to wiggle and squirm around in Felt's mind, placing seeds of influence. If it wasn't going to apologize on its own, Ardghal would try and make it.

"Your nativity is showing. If you do not understand common courtesy, then you are truly useless to me." He said. "Apologize"

Felt dug his claws into the ground..or what he could of them into the ground. His position made it a little hard to do much of anything. Especially getting away from the ear pulling. If he hadn't been stuck to the ground..well then this wouldn't be happening at all actually. Too bad it was like that.

Being the dense cat thing he was, Felt of course did not notice the intrusion in his mind. Of course it was also far too occupied on the fact that his ears were being pulled and that that action was causing him pain. If he could've actually focused on it or had quiet or something...he might have noticed.

Not that it completely mattered anyway. Felt was stubborn but if even he knew the way to get something to stop...he'd do it on his own accord if things didn't work out the way he wanted to the first way. "Okay! Felt is sorry! Now let go Tree!"
