Settling In
« on: February 11, 2011, 11:04:05 pm »
He'd been given the run down of expectations enough to have it 'memorized and be able to recite it at the drop of a hat' - though why anyone would want to drop a hat just to get someone else to talk he had no clue. But Erin didn't question what he'd been told. He was being provided for and given a chance to prove himself in the Pilot program he'd spent the time he wasn't in physical therapy learning about.

Now he was considered able and well enough to actually enter the program. He'd been chipped and handed clothing and books and a phone and a lot of other things that he would have to keep tidy and well organized. He was given an escort to his room but informed that from there on out he'd have to be able to navigate for himself.

Erin was also told he was to have a roommate and that the other had been there for some time, already well on his way through the stage one training. When he was left alone to enter, Erin calmly shifted his new belongings into one arm and opened the door with the other. He stood there for a moment to look the place over and determine where his things would go before stepping forward and letting the door slide shut behind him.

When the door opened, Nika looked up from the desk he had been studying at. He had a new room mate and it looked like he had arrived. Fixing his one remaining eye on the other boy, Nika studied him, not saying anything.

He looked odd, something not quite right about him. And the blood inside him was...odd. He couldn't put his finger on it once, but he was somewhat curious.

The silence stretched on and Nika made no effort to fill it, just sat, watching the other boy without moving.

((OOC: Sorry D8 Nika has a bad habit of watching and staring.))

Erin's hazel-green eyes settled on the other man in the room and paid careful attention to where all the personal belongings already there seemed to be before moving to the other side and setting his own things down on the other desk. He then turned and gave a slight bow of greeting - a precise 35 degree angle held for 2.5 seconds and then released as he rose his head back up to look once more at the other.

His head didn't come completely up, still angled down as if looking at the ground somewhere near Nika's feet. But his eyes were fully on his roommate as he spoke quietly, just loud enough to be heard, "Hello. I am Erin. These are my new quarters. It is an honor to meet you, Pilot Candidate Nika Argan."

There was almost nothing in the room that spoke much of Nika as a person. He kept his things neat, organized and sparse. A few pictures, sketched and painted, were near his bed, but other than that, he had little in the way of personal effects.

Nika blinked at him, "Hello." He stopped then, before realizing he should probably say something more, "It's nice to meet you." Another pause, "You have strange blood."

Erin's head titled to the side as he blinked once in, brow barely creasing in confusion and curiosity at the statement. He couldn't tell if Nika was upset or not - he didn't have an outburst like Erin was used to seeing, but that didn't mean the other boy wasn't feeling some ire.

"Do I? I am sorry. I was not aware of this. Does it bother you? I am not sure if I am allowed to request a room change, but I will if it will cause you problems. You were here before me."

"No. It just...is odd." Nika tilted his head, watching Erin. It was odd interacting with someone as awkward as he was. He would much rather just go back to his books and ignore his room mate. But Rachel always wanted him to be social.

So Nika struggled to come up with something to talk about, "You are oddly colored. Why?"

Nika, smooth as always.

Until this point Erin had been given no reason to feel self-conscious about his appearance. His difficulty with prolonged physical activity which even a year of therapy had barely abated, yes. His illiteracy which he could hide well enough by interfacing with a data-reader of some sort, yes. But his... blood? His actual appearance?

The boy's eyes drifted down to match the angle of his head as his brow furrowed a bit more in an attempt to answer the question properly and as completely as possible, "I was born with this skin coloring and am unfamiliar with the genetics as to how it came about. My hair underwent the process of 'going gray' at some point during my sleep. It was originally black. My eyes I have always understood to be a normal color. If they are odd to you as well, then I can only answer that I was once told I inherited them from my grandmother."

Nika frowned, not sure what Erin was talking about. White hair wasn't that uncommon, neither was the dark skin. Nika's own was a dark bronze color. He lifted his hand, pointing at the mark on Erin's face, "No, no. Those things are normal. But your face is red. Why? I've never seen a mark like that before."

Nika was from the upper class, where money made sure everyone was beautiful. No one would have left a birthmark like that and so, Nika had never really seen one.

Erin looked even more puzzled. Hadn't he just answered that question? His hand lifted to the mark on his face and neck and he repeated himself, "I was born with this skin coloring. I am unfamiliar with the genetics as to how it came about. I am told it is called a 'Port Wine Stain', however, and is not uncommon."

Amongst the people of Mars who were much more into the whole 'being natural' thing than Aedolis had ever been, anyway. It was one of the few things his parents had ever told him that he remembered clearly. Port Wine Stains being a concentrated swelling of blood vessels, Nika could likely feel a somewhat larger concentration of Erin's blood in that spot than was 'normal'. But not so much as to be detrimental to Erin's health.

"Oh. I've never seen it before. It's odd." Nika's one eye studied the stain, curious as to why the blood was drawn there. Made him want to play with it, see what he could do with it.

There was just something odd about Erin. He looked so frail and fragile. Like that blind girl. He would probably get broken by this place. Though, Nika found it rather soothing how...odd Erin was. He talked like Nika.

"I am sorry," he apologized again. Not sure what else to say to being called 'odd' yet again.

Erin stood there for a while the silence grew before finally giving a second stiff 35 degree bow and turning his attention to putting away 'his' possessions. There was nothing that was actually personal amongst them, each and every one a regulation issue, but it was good to have them put away appropriately and ensure his side of the room was properly cleaned.

He did this in silence. There was no reason to continue speaking unless Nika chose to. At least for the moment. Erin did have some questions about the layout of the area and where his classrooms would be. But they could wait until he was done organizing.

Nika watched Erin for a bit longer, before turning back to his homework. He knew he was supposed to be more social, but he didn't really know what to say. He should ask Rachel for suggestions.

After a moment, Nika lifted his head, watching Erin again, "Do you have any questions?" He didn't really think he was going to have any problems sharing the space with Erin, he wasn't all...touchy. Or didn't seem to be. And he seemed nice and neat.

Erin's face turned back toward Nika, a soft smile ghosting at the edges of his lips as he nodded once, "Yes. I do. Thank you for asking. If you will give me just a moment to finish?"

The man assumed the cooperation for the two minutes it took to finish. When he was done, he took the other desk chair and sat down, facing Nika with his hands placed neatly on his knees.

"I am new to the city as well as the Advanced Training Complex. I understand that there are multiple sections for class rooms and dormitories and recreation rooms. Are we housed close to the area most or all of our classes are to be held? Can we visit any of the recreation rooms? Outside of staying on our level and within the Complex, what kind expectations are there for us in terms of where we are expected to go and how quickly?"

"No. Classes will be all over. You'll have to run for some of them. As far as I know, they wont assign you any that you can't get to, but they don't care about your convenience." Nika tapped the pencil against the desk as he spoke, watching Erin with that oddly intense stare of his, "When we have free time, we are allowed to do what we like with it. We can visit any area we are allowed into. As for how quickly," Nika gave a small smile, "Don't be late."

"That is the only stipulation in general, then?" It was a rhetorical question, Erin nodding his head just once, again. "Thank you. My classes start in the morning. Would it be an imposition upon you for me to ask your aid in finding where mine are on the map and routing a course between them that will take me the least amount of time - in theory - to traverse?"

Nika shrugged, "I can help you. Why do you talk so oddly?" An odd thing for Nika to ask, who was rather known for his blunt, honest speech. He found the other boy odd, which was rather nice. To not be the weird one. At least as far as Nika was concerned.

Another furrow of his brow as Erin spun his seat just far enough to pick up the digital pad with the school map and his class schedule. Once in hand, he stood and approached Nika, pulling his chair with him so he could sit closer.

"I was not aware my speech was odd. It is simply how I am accustomed to speaking. Those who housed and fed me after I left my home world expected me to be very clear when communicating with them."

Erin extended his data pad, but retained his touch upon it so he could continue to understand the words explaining what his classes were and who taught them and where they were located. He didn't have to touch the screen to have the device start scrolling to the proper files and bring the map up on one side with the schedule on the other. The internal computer understood what he wanted the same way he could understand the information it conveyed.

"It's very formal. Not many people speak that way. It's awkward. I don't think many people will like it." He shrugged, leaning over to look at the pad. He read over the classes, then took the stylus, tracing out a route, "You'll want to learn your way around quickly. They don't like it when you are late and being lost isn't an acceptable excuse."

"You would recommend I attempt to amend my manner of speech, then?" He asked, looking at the map and having the pad calculate distance and average time of travel between each class. He frowned at the one that would take him almost all the way to the other side of the facility, "There are no rules against running in the halls are there? I do not believe I am capable of arriving to my fourth class on time if I do not."

His head lifted so he was once more looking at Nika, "Do you share any of my classes? I expect you are much further along than I am, but it would pleasant to know at least one person."

"I don't know. I'm the wrong person to ask about fitting in." The dark haired boy gave a small laugh, "No, running isn't allowed. But I just recommend you don't get caught. Being late is worse than getting caught running in the halls."

Nika looked down at the pad again, then pointed, "Yes. We share Edani History together. And biology." He frowned slightly, a little puzzled, "What does it matter if you know someone or not?"
