The Citadel / we would love not to care [Rhi]
« on: November 02, 2008, 01:23:06 am »
Roman awoke every morning at five, whether he needed to or not and whether his alarm was set or not.  It was a common practice among the Pilots, a result of being forced to wake at dawn every day of your life for four or more years.  For most, the habit tended to stick, as it had with Roman.

At five o'clock exactly, Roman switched on.  He awoke as he always did, abruptly, with no transition between sleep and wakefulness.  He was on his stomach, cool air upon his bare back.  The sheets had been pushed down to his waist.  Deep burgundy, silk, 1000 thread count.  He slept naked.  With sheets like these it would have been a sin not to.

His taste for luxury was a matter of public record and there was no use denying it.

In spite of Roman's sleeping and waking habits, he usually set his alarm anyway.  Not last night though.  With every Pilot safely through the Axis Point and most of them bedridden while they recuperated, there was genuinely not a lot to do today that couldn't wait until later.  There were always candidate issues that needed addressing, but they would keep for awhile.  Today he was taking Gabriel's advice and sleeping in.

Roman opened his eyes long enough to blink at the clock and register the time before letting his head drop back to the pillow.

"Scher?" Even his mental voice sounded groggy.

As she was wont to do, the dragon Scheherazade was at that moment flying high above Haviah, flirting with the upper atmosphere to the point where frost crystallized upon her plated metal and the part of her that was flesh burned for oxygen.  As the five o'clock hour struck, she sank down through the clouds.  Haviah revealed itself through a haze of pollution.  The city was huge.  Even at this height, it spread outward for miles and miles, though its height still outmatched its width.  She came within range just as her human awoke.

"Present!" she pathed back, pitching her mindvoice chipper and happy just to aggravate him.  She could just picture him rolling his eyes.

"Anything on the agenda this morning?"

"What answer are you looking for?"
A long moment passed and Scheherazade hissed in amusement.  "Are you falling back to sleep,  Roman?"

"Not if I've got anything scheduled."

Oh dear.  Now Scheherazade found herself with a dilemma.  On the one wing, she could tell the truth and remind her Pilot about his prior commitment.  On the other wing, since when had she ever made Roman's life easier?  It would be such a shame to break tradition.  "Not a thing.  Rest up."

That was good news to Roman.  He could have gotten up, but it would have been difficult and he would have been bitchy toward everyone all day.  And he did hate taking out his bad moods on the candidates.  As he drifted back to sleep, he couldn't quite shake the feeling there was something he was supposed to be doing this morning.  Hm.  Couldn't have been anything too important.  If he needed to be up, Scher would have told him.

Advanced Training Complex / anti-party [open]
« on: July 05, 2008, 02:17:44 am »
After training was done for the day, Col dragged his aching body through the halls to his room.  Val wasn't there thank goodness, but the last thing Col wanted just then was to sit in that cell and stare at the wall.  He needed a drink but had no credits to buy any from the commissary.  He was stuck with the standard issue bottled water available for free to all personnel.  It was bullshit, but he grabbed a bottle anyway and left the room again.

Tonight would be Devi and Chica's party thing.  He'd just about rather go through an extra drill routine than get stuck in a room with the other candidates.  Col took a long, circuitous route that wouldn't bring him close to the party.  Trying to read the invitation had given him a headache.  Trying to reply to it would have made him want to crawl in a hole somewhere and freakin' die.  So he hadn't responded and had gone out of his way to avoid both of them.  He weren't gonna hang around Chica if he could help it.  Devi he didn't know but she was like as not someone he were better off not meetin'.

For a long time he wandered through the halls, letting sore muscles unwind and venturing to parts of the ATC he weren't familiar with.  He didn't get lost no more, and that was somethin'.  He could read the signs now and the maps more or less.  The place could be interesting if you let yerself see it.

Eventually he started looking for somewheres specific, some place he could go to get away from all the people wandering the halls and maybe cut himself off from some of the mental noise bombarding his head.  How did the Pilots manage?  It was exhausting bein' around so many people all the time.  Complete silence would be so damn sweet.

His aimless wandering eventually brought him to a door leading out into a supply stairwell.  Peering through the window, he saw it was dim inside, and deserted.  He didn't even bother looking around before slipping in.  They didn't want him in there, they could just come on in and tell him theirselves.

His footsteps echoed in the vast stairwell.  It went upward farther than he could see.  There was also a large cargo elevator there, so he figured the stairs themselves were a holdover kept around for emergencies or times when the lift weren't workin'.  A light on the second landing flickered, piercing the silence with electric crackles.

The areas beneath the stairs drew Col's attention.  Supplies and sundries were gathered there, some in cardboard boxes on the floor and others stacked in large, simple wooden shelves.  In the dim light, Col saw things like extra rolls of toilet paper, bottles of cleaning products, and many cartons of paper-wrapped straws for the cafeterias.

Thus far no one had busted through the door to yell at him, so Col shuffled further in.  Stupid uniform jacket was getting hot. He shrugged it to the floor, the simple cotton t-shirt underneath much more bearable, then ducked under the stairs and sat against the wall.  The cold bottle in his hand was dripping condensation.  Col twisted off the cap and took a swig of it before leaning his head back and pressing the bottle against his forehead.

At least none of the other candidates would find him here.

Advanced Training Complex / Candidate pancake? [draco/open!]
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:41:48 pm »
This high up, the wind beat and tugged at him, roaring in his ears.  June had to keep one hand at the wall to his left to keep from falling.  His back was to the open air.  He could feel the void behind him, yawning, waiting to suck him down.  The goggles over his eyes kept the stinging brown hair whipping at his face from blinding him.

What a bunch of punks, he thought, smirking as he scanned the wide-eyed faces before him.

He balanced on a balcony railing high—very high—up on the ATC.  Like, he couldn't even see the people below.  The ground was lost in the criss-crossing of skyways and shuttles.  Only minutes before, he'd been under escort in the ATC interior, on his way back to his room after having tried—for the fifth time that day—to get out through one of the many conventional entrances and exits.  He was still wearing the black and white striped shirt and cargo pants he'd been brought in with, and to hell with all of them if they thought he was gonna put on that uniform.  He'd streak through the halls naked first.

It hadn't been easy to break away from his escort, but bein' a right tenacious sort he'd done it.  By the gods' glowy white asses, he'd done it! He'd run wildly through the halls of the ATC, no plan in mind, no destination, just fleeing blind like an animal until a patch of pale blue at the end of a corridor caught his attention.  He had skidded out onto the balcony, pursuing footsteps too close behind to allow for anything but impulsive thought.

Fortunately, that was the kind of thought he was best at.

With no hesitation, he'd leaped up onto the balcony railing and faced them, grinning.  A dozen or more guards and ATC administrators now crowded upon the balcony and at its entrance.  Some yelled at him and even pointed guns, others held their hands out, rationalizing, urging.  But none of them got too close.  They were afraid of him jumping, he realized, and that knowledge sent a jolt of pleasure through him.  He had some power here after all if he could spin them into a shitfit like this.

Hell yeah.  Nothing better than an audience.  The feeling of all that attention and thought bearing down right on ya was better than sex, better than a high, better than fucking anything.  His blood rushed with it and his head rang.  He felt like he might fly.

Haha!  What a way to go!  Diving backward of the famed ATC and splattering all over the Aedolian pavement!  Best fucking death ever!  And if what he'd heard was on the straight, those asstard Pilot would get blamed for it.  Heh.  Just had to frame it right, make it memorable, say his last words.  This was important.  It was the last thing he'd ever do in life.

June took a moment to close his eyes and remember some things.  The smell of gasoline in his old garage, that nervous jittery feeling right before a job and the calm certainty that fell over you when the bullets started flying, the tunnel vision ya got out on the abandoned turnpike when you were pushin' your bike and your nerves to their limits, the whole world reduced to dust and speed and that one steady point on the horizon at the center of it all.  Yeah.  Gods above, he was gonna miss all that.

Letting go of the wall, he flipped them off with both hands, nearly losing his balance, and yelled over the the buffeting wind.

"FUCK YOU ALL I'D RATHER JUMP!"

His style might best be described as eclectic. He wears whatever he can find. Likes horrid patterns. Short red-brown hair.

Personality:
Push him and he pushes back.  Push harder and he'll match you. He refuses to participate in the training not because he doesn't want to be a Pilot, but because trying to make him do something is the surest way to make him do the opposite. With Aedolis trying to force him to be a Pilot, he will do whatever it takes to make it to TRIM or he'll die in the effort.

History:
June was found in an Aedolian city on the frontier that was far less regulated than Haviah. He made a living through illegal street racing and gangbanging and is a chain smoker. Graffiti art is one of his more productive talents.  Now uprooted from his home and brought to the capital, he is determined to be sent to TRIM because he sees it as a means of controlling his own fate.

  • Current Events #1 is out. It's something new we're trying to keep track of all the big IC stuff that goes on.
  • There are so many Pilots and candidates running around, they got their own IC message board. It works like the Gospel Subnet board.
  • You can request custom titles now. We could make custom titles before but, ah, we neglected to actually mention that to anyone. >.>
  • Did anyone notice RotE has it's own fun ranks? ^w^ They're based on post count. So far you guys have discovered:

In-Character News / Current Events #1
« on: June 17, 2008, 10:14:13 pm »
This is something new we're trying. xD

AEDOLIS:
Aedolis is hopping right now. The Advanced Training Complex has seen an influx of new Pilot candidates and they're busy meeting their Pilot mentors and getting acclimated to their new surroundings.

The war with Libra having been aborted indefinitely, all Pilots have now returned to the Citadel and are undergoing Axis Point interrogation. Many have been released already and are enjoying pie. None have yet been placed under military arrest.

Providence's death and the interrogation of the Pilots remains classified information and has not been released to the public.

TEINAR:
Teinar is in a precarious situation.  The surface above the Lower City is crawling with Aedolian military.  The dragons themselves are taking part, making any attempt to leave the Lower City a suicide mission.  Teinar is remaining in lockdown until all Aedolian personnel are gone from the vicinity of the Upper City.

SERUNA:
The repercussions of Aedolis pulling their fleet have only barely begun to hit the Seruna stations.  Having maintained neutrality throughout, Cancer is nonetheless seeing consequences as mercenaries paid under the table clash with contractors unwilling to pay for a fight that never happened.  It's good news for other independents, though, and there will likely be a chaos of revelry in the Red District when word gets around that the road to Libra is clear again.  Cancer's docking bay will be busy in the coming weeks as grounded ships at last are able to leave and those stuck without space to dock because of all the parked independents take advantage of the exodus.

THANATOS INC.:
Tensions are a wee bit high among the researchers of TRIM as the president has arrived for an inspection. No one quite seems to know what to expect.  Could change be on the way for TRIM?

The institute is also experiencing a distressing shortage of psychic subjects at this time, due in part to the success many recent Pilot candidates have had in passing the training program.  No doubt as the latest group makes its way through the program, some will fail and TRIM will see an increase in subjects.  If the situation does not right itself soon, however, the institute may have to seek other means of obtaining material.

Communication / Mission Abort >> Pilots Recalled
« on: May 31, 2008, 03:26:21 pm »
A top-tier transmission from the Citadel has reached the Aedolian fleet.  All systems on every ship go into lockout and automatic navigation activates.  The ships switch course for Earth immediately.  That same transmission includes a directive for all Pilots from Dragon Royal Scheherazade:

"Libra mission is aborted.  Every Pilot recalled to the Citadel.  Upon docking, you will be transferred to a holding area in the Lead Rooms.  You will then proceed, as summoned and under escort, to the Axis Point for questioning. At this time, only Pilots Roman Rosales and Dyerlich Lochk are cleared to move freely about the Citadel.

Any Pilot attempting to exit the holding area without leave will be place under military arrest."

Blaine Clé, Pilot Cardinal

"And your grammar! I mean it was just so...grammatical!" ~ Blaine being a tool

I, I can do anything
If you want me here
And I can fix anything
If you let me near
Where are those secrets now
That you're too scared to tell
I'd whisper them all aloud
So you can hear yourself

THE REAL YOU________________ __

Appearance:
With big, pale blue eyes, an honest face, and a certain delicacy to his features, Blaine looks younger than he really is and gives the impression of naivete and cheerfulness. He dresses in trendy outfits when not in uniform and though he will never be muscular and bulky, he's in good shape and follows the fitness training required for Pilots. Always ready with a smile. Perfectly styled strawberry blonde hair.

Personality:
Blaine is kind, compassionate, and determined to make Aedolis a better place for all people. This gets him into trouble, as he is openly critical of the government and the dragons.  Sometimes goes overboard with the lighthearted, breezy act, but he does it to keep the tension down between himself and other Pilots.  Has gotten good at walking the line between troublesome and treasonous. Believes that the best way to bring about change is by working with the system, not against it.

Publicly declares to be asexual and have no interest in sex.  Is secretly a masochist, and would do just about anything to keep people from knowing this.

History:

Stage 1: 15
Stage 2: 15-19
Stage 3: 19-20
Stage 4: 20-21
Stage 5: 21
Pilot: 22

As a candidate, Blaine expressed his disapproval of the Aedolian military government often and loudly. Both of his parents were terrorists who were eventually caught and executed, and Blaine was given over to the care of the state. He was a lot more bullheaded back then, thinking in his callow youth that he could deny the Powers That Be and prevail.  Under normal circumstances, a candidate with such issues would never be allowed to pass, but Blaine is a rare and valuable precog, and many years were spent on him to create a usable Pilot. His candidacy was a tribulation, even in comparison to the norm. Much effort was spent trying to break him.  He was treated like a POW during the early years of his candidacy.

While they never succeeded in forcing him to renounce his views, the Blaine Clé that finally graduated was not the one who had first come into the program. He saw himself as a part of the system rather than in opposition to it. He remains a conscientious objector to many governmental policies, and has been court-martialed half a dozen times for stepping over the line. He is considered to be on permanent probation and will never be permitted to rise beyond Cardinal.  He is not allowed in the ATC.  All Pilots outrank him, regardless of time served.

Blaine belongs to Voodoo, a small black dragon who is good at keeping him in line.  Voodoo is not especially fond of humans and doesn't tolerate their nonsense well.

Strengths:
Blaine's psychic gift of note is precognition. He can see the future and has the most success predicting the outcome of events with random variables. The more a thing depends on arbitrary and non-human circumstances, the better his success rate is.

He is also a telesthetic, able to see what is happening in certain distant places, though his accuracy rate is too low to be reliable. These two abilities plus telepathy make up the entirety of his psychic arsenal.

Weaknesses:
Telekinesis, common as far as psionics go, is not one of Blaine's gifts. He has to move things the old fashioned way. His psychic defenses and offensives are below average.

Likes:
Most of the Pilots, hats, scarves, his hamster Commando

Dislikes:
Corruption, cruelty, social irresponsibility

Communication / To Julian, from Zachary
« on: May 22, 2008, 12:32:21 am »
My Dearest Julian,

I just got the news about Val and I wanted to write you myself and send you warm thoughts and condolences in this trying and difficult time. It must be so hard to have to give up a child to the Pilot candidate program, but no doubt your heart swells with pride in knowing that dear Val will soon be serving our great Aedolis as a Pilot.

Don't worry, I'm sure he'll make it through the program just fine, what with him being the level-headed and lovable boy that he is.  And I hear that Roman Rosales fellow is the epitome of fairness and reason.  (:

Oh goodness, I just realized that if Val doesn't pass he'll end up in my TRIM. That would be terribly awkward, don't you think? However would we face one another at the cocktail parties? I do hope our friendship will not be strained if your son ends up under my researcher's scalpels.  I hold your regard for me at great value! <3

Anyway, I have to go, am currently inspecting TRIM, making sure the facilities are up to code to accommodate all these broken candidates we keep getting—oh I'm dreadfully sorry, that's probably not a subject you want to hear about now. I sincerely beg your pardon.

Toodles with oodles of noodles,

~Zachary Noel

News and Updates / Master list updated + art usage policy
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:28:40 pm »
Alrighty! The Master List of Ranks and Characters is now totally updated. Every character joined to date should be there. :3

Go check it out and make sure your characters are all there and in the right place. Comment here with anything I missed! Also check the links and make sure they're pointing in the right place, and as always if you have any suggestions for ranks or whatever, let's here 'em. (:

Changes/additions to the list:
  • The name of each location now links to its information page on the site.
  • An additional Pilot cant was added, and all Pilots now fall under one of the cants.
  • Wanderers and Independents are separated alphabetically but not alphabetized beyond that.
  • Pilots can now have specific jobs listed. For instance, Roman is listed as the Director of Candidate Affairs. Lemme know if your Pilot has a specific job/title you want.
  • Sevenwinds is now on the list!
  • Overall, characters under any rank are listed in order of oldest to newest.
  • The consensus has NOT been updated. If anyone wants to actually take a count, let us know the results and we'll update it. xDDD

And finally, SotE's art usage policy has been wenched for RotE.

Character Registration and Directory / Art Usage Policy!
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:02:46 pm »
Update: Images that violate our art policy will now be removed from profiles without warning.

You are totally free to use whatever means you like to visually represent your character, whether you choose to do so with a photograph of a model/actor or through art, whether your own or someone else's.

However, especially if you are using pictures that are not your own, please make sure to credit them (with their name and a link to the original source)—and be sure to read each artist/photographer's usage policy to be sure that you are even allowed to use their pictures, first. *New* We do suggest that you cite your own work as well so that we don't accidentally take it down.

You're free to use art from official, corporate sources (published anime, video games, movies, TCGs, etc.) as well as photos of celebrities without crediting the specific artist/photographer so long as you name the source (the title of the movie, TV show, game, etc.).  Apart from these sources, please either credit or do not use the image. If you're unsure as to whether something is or is not an official source, we'll err on the side of caution and disallow the image.

*New* You're also more than welcome to edit other artist's artwork provided that you obtain their permission to do so first.

Furthermore, if you can't find the artist of an original piece (for instance, say you found the image on photobucket or pinterest), you can always check it here: TinEye

If it is an image that has been commissioned (and you're not the owner of the original commissioned character) then we're going to disallow the image. The person who commissioned it paid good money for that character image, so it's safe to assume they wouldn't want someone else using it.

If an image has nudity in it, please place it under a spoiler tag with a warning, as some people browse from work and school.

Thank you!

F.A.Q

Are there any exceptions to crediting artwork?
Yes. If the art is very obviously from a corporate art source (like Disney, or an anime series), we require only that you name the source, not the individual artist/photographer.  Also, if you commissioned the piece yourself, there is no need to cite attribution.  These are the only two exceptions.

Their name is on the picture. Do I still have to credit?
Yep. Even if their name and url are on the picture, we still require written credit.

I can't find the artist and this picture is perfect!
No artist, no credit, no picture. Sorry! But there's tons of artists out there who you CAN credit. Go check their art. (Try DeviantArt.)  Or visit The Studio and see if you can find an artist to draw a picture for you. We even have a Commissionable Artists Directory. Or commission an artist elsewhere. Or draw the picture yourself. Or visit Portrait Adoption and buy a portrait there!

I found the art on Pinterest/Google Image Search/etc and have the artist's name! Is that good enough?
Pinterest and Google image searches do not count as a source for the image. You must link to the image's original source. Generally, googling the image or the artist's name will lead you to the image's original source (such as the artist's website, Deviantart, tumblr, or other social media).

So if I credit I can use any picture I want, right?
Not quite! Some artists disallow their work to be redistributed even if credit is given. This is their right as the copyright holder, and we will honor their decision.

Well, I'm still searching for the original artist...
Great! Take the picture down until you can find them. Then you can put it up. (:

Can I edit/recolor an artist's image?
Do you have their permission to do so? Then yes! If not? Then no! You can gain permission one of two ways:
1.) Contact them and ask them personally. If they say yes, then you can! If they say no, then don't do it!
2.) Read their artist FAQs if they have any! If they say in their FAQ that their images are available to be edited, then go for it! If they don't have a FAQ or they say they cannot be edited, or they say nothing about the subject at all, then assume that is a no and either don't do it, or contact the artist directly. Then refer back to point #1.

I'm still waiting for permission/haven't heard from the artist about editing their work, can I just put up the edited version while I wait?
Nope! No answer from an artist is considered a "no" until they say otherwise.
