{PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION}

Dekval has dark brown hair shaved on all sides down to peachfuzz, except for the top, which he keeps a little longer in an effort to hide the bright snow-white on his left side, which is a constant reminder of the one scar he can’t really hide but tries to anyway. He has glacier blue eyes that seem to darken or lighten depending on how he’s feeling at any given time. His body is that of a street-fighter, someone who’s had to fight to survive from a very young age. He also keeps his body honed by adhering to a rather strict work-out routine, because doing such keeps the side effects of overusing his power in check. He’s on the tall side, but he can move incredibly quietly despite his height. He may be right behind you, and you’ll never know until he kills you.

{PERSONALITY}

Dekval now is pretty easy going for the most part, letting things go as they will until he feels the need to step in and do something about it, which isn’t often. When he was younger, he was far more hot-headed and temperamental. He learned early on that you have to fight your own battles. He also learned that if you can’t fight, you’d better learn how because no one is coming to save you. He’s self-sufficient, and can take care of himself even in the most extreme of situations. But he does have a temper and he does have a sadistic streak when riled. Otherwise, he’s very mission-oriented when it’s time to be serious, but he does know how to have fun, and probably has gotten into trouble for pranking the wrong person.

KNOCK ME DOWN, BUT I’LL GET UP AGAIN

Dekval should’ve had, but didn’t, a great childhood. His mother doted on him, but she was as much a victim as he was. His father would often take his frustrations out on his family, which meant Dekval was often a punching bag, even at tender ages. When he was a little older, and was learning to fight back even though it was futile, he unconsciously began combining his powerful telepathy with his illumokinesis and inadvertently discovered his specialty while protecting himself from his father. In the beginning, the illumopathy didn’t last long, and Dekval would always get nosebleeds, which he blamed on his dad and not on himself, not realizing that the nosebleeds were a side effect of his power combination. But he kept practicing, until the day his father realized something strange was going on.

Dekval was almost fourteen when he was taken from his home and thrust into the candidate program.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED

Dekval hated every minute of the program, but he learned to hide that emotion very quickly. After all, it had gotten him away from his father - whom he really hated - and it got him away from his mother - whom he’d also come to hate for not protecting him and for always saying things would change, which they never did - so he learned to cope. But it was hard, especially after his nosebleeds were discovered. If he didn’t find a way to stop them completely, or at least decrease their frequency, he was doomed.

So Dekval began to train himself. He began an intensive work-out regimen and trained himself practically every day in the use of his powers. Inadvertently, he developed the ability to shield a handful of people from all senses in a one-hundred-foot-radius for thirty-six hours without side effects. He also inadvertently developed the ability to stay awake for that thirty-six hours, but after that, he’s down for at least twelve with a vicious headache and likely a nosebleed. He gets very grumpy at that point.

During the time he’s using his powers, depending on how much strength he needs to give to the task - such as, if he’s shielding only one person or a hundred - he can only respond in one or more words via his telepathy.

Fun Facts:
- Likes mints, and has a collection of home mints, backpack mints, pocket mints, and emergency mints
- He likes sitting against Sophitia’s belly when he either reads or plays games on the one handheld device he owns, and for some reason known only to her, she allows it. (Dek secretly believes it’s because she’s a closet backseat gamer)
- Even if he’s not using his abilities, he can stay up for those thirty-six hours, which can get mightily creepy if he’s wandering around while everyone’s sleeping
- Because he grew up fighting, he uses dirty tactics to win at all costs

{SPECIAL ABILITIES}

Telepathy - A powerful telepath, he can talk to anyone nearby as well as alter their senses, except when he’s combining his telepathy with his illumokinesis. Then he can, depending on how many people or objects he’s shielding, can only communicate in one or more words.

Illumokinesis - He is able to bend light and affect what people see. When he combines this with his telepathy, he can alter people’s senses.

Illumopathy - His specialty, a learned technique. Actually a hybrid of his telepathy and illumokinesis, he can render people in a 100-foot radius around him invisible to all senses such that someone could be staring right at the group and never see, hear, touch, or sense them through any means. He can keep this up for thirty-six hours straight.

{RELATIONSHIPS}

The Ryun Ravens - His squad and his new family

Sophitia - his dragon, who is a veritable ball of floof and metal. She is on the small side, perhaps only about nine feet tall at the shoulder. She chose Dek to be her partner because he somehow managed to render himself invisible to her for all of five seconds. He definitely doesn’t do that now, because, surprisingly even to Sophitia, the bond they have is almost symbiotic. She grounds him and whatever it is he provides for her keeps her happy. She is gunmetal grey in her scale color, with the edges fading more toward ash, with fully biomechanical wings. Her left eye is also machine, and can detect heat signatures if she closes her right eye. It was this that Dek managed to hide himself from, when she tested him to see if he was worthy of her. Her talons are steel-tipped, but the rest of her is warm flesh and bone.

Juhn Rath - Dekval’s father. He’s a bully, a cheat, a drunk, and a liar. He excels at pushing around people who couldn’t or wouldn’t fight back, and often took his frustrations at his failing “get rich quick” schemes out on his wife and son. When Dekval would fight back, he would beat the boy until Dek either passed out or his wife begged him to stop, in which case he turned his fists on her. When he discovered that he was being influenced by Dekval’s psychic powers, he immediately turned his son over to the Candidate program. In his mind, doing so would net him the prestige he should’ve had, because of course Dekval would be grateful and would give his father whatever he wanted out of sheer thankfulness. Instead, he’s still where he always was, only this time with a clear threat hanging over his head, courtesy of Sophitia.

Maile Rath - Dekval’s mother. A petite woman who loved her son and husband almost to the point of zealotry. Even though she tried to protect her boy from his father, she just couldn’t, and so ended up being more than passive when Dekval came to her bleeding and bruised and crying. She doctored him, of course, and promised him one day they’d leave, just him and her, and they’d go somewhere safe and his father would never find them. But that never happened, either because she just didn’t have the courage or because she just didn’t believe her own words. Either way, she ended up without her son, and now watches him from afar, terribly proud of him but afraid to show it. She also taught him her native tongue, and due to constant practice as a little kid when he spoke with her, he's also fluent in it.

{BACKGROUND NOTES}

Dekval didn’t have the greatest upbringing and that once showed in his pattern of speech until he learned to curb it, but still shows in his mannerisms. He’s a fighter, and won’t go down without taking as many as he can with him. He still harbors a deep anger and hatred for both his parents, although he’s come to understand none of it was his fault, and he refuses to take the blame any longer for something he didn’t have a choice in doing. He can be extremely protective of the people he cares about, especially if they’ve shown him they have his back as much as he has theirs, but he won’t interfere with their lives unless he thinks he needs to step in. And he’ll do it, whether they want him to or not, and whether they thank him for it later or not. He’s seen too much, and too much was done to him, for him not to try to protect someone. Although, it remains to be seen whether he’s protecting them for their own sake, or to make up for the fact he wasn’t good enough to protect anyone when he was small. He’s not even really sure of that answer himself.
