A Fateful Encounter [GIR]
« on: August 16, 2012, 10:40:18 pm »
Dawn was having a long day. keeping an entire warship running was tiresome. Not to mention that she has yet to find her creator. He went missing a little over six months ago. Dawn was beginning to lose hope. Today she was venturing to outer system. While it is true that there are no colonies this far out. it didn't hurt to check.

Dawn was particularly drawn to a blip on her radar. As the 'blip' came into view, Dawn was astounded. that 'blip' was a massive colonization class vessel. But that was as much as she could tell about the vessel. It was unlike any ship that one would find in this part of space, clearly not from this solar system. Curiosity got the better of her.

"Sentinel" she said to one of the single function AI's that support the ship, "open a channel to the vessel on radar." After a few seconds she pressed a button on the console and spoke into the mic.

"Unknown Colonization Vessel. This is Dawn of the warship Daedalus. I'm drifting and requesting a supply of fuel to get me to a spaceport. Please respond." Drifting was a common naval term for having run out of fuel and running on residual thrust. That of course wasn't true the warship ran on Ion power and recharged from the sun. But that technology was decades ahead of this solar system.

<No, Imperial Knight-Admiral, I have not studied the new flight regs yet. I was just about to do that, now that I've actually been cleared to fly.>, Eva responded, <With all due respect, now really isn't a good time. I sortie in less than one human minute, and this file's bigger than Heilung Engel's bedtime story collection.>, she continued, not even looking at the comm screen as she hurried through the manual she'd been assigned to read. <T.Z., can you get the other terminal, please? Tell whoever's calling that I'm busy, unless they outrank the Imperial Knight-Admiral, please.>, she added as she heard a beeping sound.

<Belay that order, T.Z. We're being hailed. Our frigates should arrive... Now.>, Adelheid snapped, <Eva, read those when you get back. There's nothing your formation can't fill you in on. Scramble.>

<At once.>, Eva replied, practically throwing her helmet on as she raced out the hatch and toward the hangers.

"This is Surmava Armu. The distinct lack of fumes in your thrust leads me to believe you are springing a trap. Well, that, and our sensors can tell you're not out of power. Power down your ship immediately, or we will assume you are hostile.", Surmava armu, a MiCo AI, responded. Normally, a MiCo AI did not handle hails, but the discrepancy had been enough to redirect the hail. No chances were taken with colony ships, especially during a Search. As the AI finished responding, two Draconian frigates dropped out of the Void, particle beam cannons already charged and ready to fire as the Rahulik Vari's own Knight Lance powered up.

"Yikes, they mean some serious business." Dawn opened the comm line again. "This is Dawn of the Daedalus. I assure you this is not a trap. Powering down regardless." This time dawn was true to her word. She powered down what little energy was flowing in the thrusters as well as the weapon AI. She wouldn't have the Daedalus ripped to shreads because of some eager AI.

The particle beams remained charged as the unknown vessel powered down. <Grace, I'll take the hail from here. You have permission to fire if their weapons even show a hint of powering up.>, Adelheid commanded.

"Understood."

<Daedalus, I'd like to know why you thought it a good idea to lie about such a thing while hailing a military vessel, especially when you are one as well. I'd also like to have a word the commanding officer of your vessel, if at all possible.>, Adelheid immediately stated, her 'voice' that of an officer chewing out a veteran soldier for a boot mistake, <Your mistake very nearly cost you your ship.>. Even as she spoke, something nagged at the back of her mind. There were no life signs aboard Daedalus, as far as the sensor data on her terminal showed. <Even if the entire crew were in stasis, there should be something on the sensors, but nothing's there. Not even corpses. Why would an unmanned ship's operators be hailing us? And why would an unmanned ship's operators be capable of lying in the first place?>, she thought to herself, <Sentient machine race, perhaps? But then that leaves the question of who built them, and why...>.

Dawn pressed into the comm line and spoke again. "This is White Dawn. Commanding AI of the Daedalus. And I lied because I was curious as to your vessel and I had no way of knowing you could trace my trail for signs of residual fuel that technology in not readily available in this solar system. I had no intention of attacking less you attacked me, still don't. It was purely a situation of "curiosity killed the cat" with less emphasis on the death part." Dawn rubbed her hand through her hair. She knew her hair was fake but it felt real to her. "Unknown warclass frigates, you have permission to come aboard should you feel so inclined. Opening bay doors." with that, a slight grinding noise could be heard across the ship as the bay doors opened.

Adelheid took a moment to think, a moment that was less than half a second human time. <Military AI's don't lie unless they're hiding something... Or they've gone rogue. But sensors aren't picking up any corpses. It's highly unlikely that an entire crew would escape a rogue AI, especially one that has control of the ship, so what's really going on here...?>, she mused, still not convinced this 'White Dawn' could (or should) be trusted.

<Permission to board?>, Eva asked as she watched the bay doors open.

<Denied. T.Z., take a team and search their systems. Make a record of all logs, deleted data, and the ship's astrogation charts. I want to know where that ship's from, where it's been, and what happened to the crew, if there ever was one. If you encounter resistance, deal with it, then lock the weapons systems of that ship.>, Adelheid commanded. As the AI went to pick out her team and transmit herself to the unknown ship, Adelheid turned her attention once more to White Dawn, <I'm sending over a team of AI's. They will be searching your ship's databanks for information regarding some... concerns I have with your story and your ship. Do not interfere with their search.>. Too many things weren't adding up in this situation for Adelheid's liking.

There was always a problem whenever another program entered the ships system, Dawn was the reason the Daedalus work, she was the ships major systems. So naturally she felt whenever they had been pinged or when a virus entered the system, it wasn't to be unexpected that she could feel the other ship's AI units rifling through the ships logs and such. It felt unnatural. She shuddered and went to sit down, trying to ignore it.

but that was when she recognized one of the AI. "Well, well TZ. It was nice talking to you in that chat forum but I rather wish you would take me to dinner first."

"I'm sorry, White Dawn, but orders are orders. My word may be enough for the Imperial Knight-Admiral in command of my ship, but she and I both know the Council, and, more importantly, the Emperor would not be satisfied without concrete proof, and too much about your story, actions, and ship don't add up. It is far more than the crew's lives and honor are worth to disobey my orders right now. Please. Do not make this harder than it has to be.", Trotzige Schwert responded as she kept an eye on the other AI's searching the ship's data, "Avasüli, please make a note of all data pertaining to Aedolis and any Aedolian holdings the crew may have visited, then log them to my personal station under subject 'RE: White Dawn followup'. Earmark them for relay to the Imperial Knight-Admiral as well, please.".

"Yes Ma'am.".

"White Dawn. When we last spoke, you said you were looking for your creator, who disappeared over six months ago. Last known location was Aedolis, after that, nothing. Am I correct in assuming your creator was, prior to his disappearance, a crew member aboard this vessel?", T.Z. asked, a very slight pointedness to her tone. She wasn't really allowed to say it, but a confirmation of her assumption would give her more support as far as getting official approval to look into the matter, if only as a way of confirming that White Dawn was not a rogue AI. <Assuming she isn't.>, T.Z. reminded herself. She'd served far too long to let her emotions cloud her judgement more than they already had.

"As I'm sure your team of AI's are noticing, this is a warship, and at one time it belonged to Aedolis. But that was before my creation. Care to hear it story?" She got up and ran her hand along the cold metal wall. She could feel the bite of the cold metal. What was it about her design that allowed for such human qualities.

"Fifty years ago the Daedalus worked under a different name, ragnarok, it was the single most powerful vessel in the Aedolis Navy. Just before two ships of the same caliber were completed, it was attacked by a single seat fighter. Ragnarok never stood a chance, whoever the pilot was, they were an ace beyond aces. The damage was so vast and wide spead that it would have cost more to repair it then to just abandon it. So that's what they did. They stripped it of weapons and anything else that was of value. Then they left it in the wastelands. I'm not sure what happened after that. All I know is my creator made me as the pilot of this ship and he used it as a portable space station. And we're have a one seat fighter in the dock. You know what happens next TZ. He enters Aedolis airspace and never returns." She didn't doubt for a second that her creator was the ace.

"That may be helpful", Trotzige Schwert answered, "It would certainly give us some history to go on should an investigation be deemed advisable. Mind if I slip into something a little more comfortable?", she asked, as much to lighten the mood as to request permission to transport one of her bodies on board.

<I've already sent over a case with a suitable body. Just need permission to bring her aboard.>, Adelheid advised.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The story intrigued the AI. "A lone fighter managed to take down a capitol ship? Seems a bit... unbelievable. What was the fighter equipped with?", she asked, her tone one of equal parts amazement and disbelief.

<I recall reading about a similar feat during the Human-Draconian War, but humans don't live that long, do they? Think this ace could be a descendant?>, Adelheid asked.

"I doubt it. That ace died in the war, and the Union barely sends ships outside of their fleets' systems, let alone other galaxies. Unless one of her descendants was a pirate, it doesn't seem likely. I'd say it was crew incompetence, but there should have been AI's aboard. Permission to make a recommendation?"

<Granted.>

"I'm thinking it might be worth trying to locate this ace. At the very least, he'd be able to give us valuable intel on the Aedolian military, not to mention the Alliance would welcome someone of his caliber. Such an investigation might also lead us to a witness that could sort out the issue of this ship's... inconsistencies, assuming I've correctly guessed where this story is leading.". TZ's tone was meant as an invitation for White Dawn to be more explicit with what she was implying.

<Noted. Get me something more solid, and I'll run it by the Council. I've been considering requesting heavier escort anyway, given that the Warmonger and Avarice are operating in the system. It may help lean things in our favor.>, Adelheid, catching on to TZ's intentions, responded.
