It had been a fruitful shopping venture, and Gabriel's arms were loaded with bags filled with new games and movies he'd blown a large chunk of his paycheck on. Most of them were for himself and Alaric, romantic comedies and the like, but he'd picked up several games and movies he thought Roman might like.

Heading for an elevator, he jabbed the button, waited for the doors to open, and was halfway in before he noticed who its other occupant was:

Aydan Rosales, Roman's douchebag father that he'd throttled only several weeks prior.

Gabriel froze and stared in disgusted horror.

Aydan's head drew up. The barest smile showed on his face. He leaned against the back wall of the elevator, hands in his pockets. He hadn't been expecting this, but it was a nice surprise. This was going to brighten his whole day.

"Pilot Tierney."

Aydan directly addressing him broke him out of his stare, brought him back to where he was, and Gabriel stepped into the elevator with a bright, fake smile.

"Captain Douchenozzle," he greeted back with a mock salute as the doors slid shut. That out of the way, he turned to face the doors and leaned his shoulder against the side wall. He stayed near the front and had no intention of carrying this little meeting any further than that. His floor was only a couple stories up, it would be over in a couple seconds, and he was not about to wait for a new elevator just to avoid him. The dickhead wasn't worth avoidance.

Aydan's smile was anything but fake. Even the insult—no, especially the insult—delighted him. No one had ever called him that before.

"So," he said as the doors closed, "do you dislike me so much out of empathy for Roman, or because I didn't fall weeping at my son's bedside?"

Gabriel rolled his eyes and punched the number to his floor. "How about 'cause you're a dickweasel?"

He paused, then added, "So yeah, kinda a mix of both. I mean, what, didja show up just to to asshole it up and show how much you don't give a crap? Super classy."

"Speaking of dead sons, I don't suppose you can tell me anything about Temple." He shrugged. "They won't give me any real information."

The official word from the Citadel had been suitably vague and respectful and utterly unhelpful.

That made Gabriel stiffen as though struck, a sudden wave of emotion--anger and upset--gripping him. It was too much all at once, that he'd lost Temple and just about lost Roman, and being reminded of that loss on top of the stress of the past several weeks hurt--a loss he hadn't yet come to terms with, hadn't yet accepted, hadn't even grieved yet because he just couldn't accept it and there was no body there to make it feel real and it just felt like he'd wake up and he'd be back again.

Hearing Temple's name and dead in the same sentence felt unreal.

"Like you give a fuck," he said as the elevator lurched into motion, grabbing onto the side railing. "Just wanna know the gory details or what?"

Part of it was just to spite Aydan. The other part was just that he didn't want to say the words out loud, didn't want to repeat out loud what he'd been told as though saying it would make it true.

Aydan's brows rose up. "There are gory details?"

He was just making conversation. He looked in on Temple daily, down in Teinar. In the beginning, when his son was nowhere near a mirror, he'd taken on the reflection of some military officer or other and used that to make quick, inconspicuous visits, just to make sure Temple was still alive.

Having Temple stuck in Teinar had never been in his plans, but he was flexible, and Temple's presence in the Citadel wasn't nearly as critical as Roman's.

Gabriel tensed and it took every bit of willpower he had not to do something angry and drastic. He gripped the railing tighter. "What the fuck is wrong with you? No, seriously! See, that's exactly what I--"

The elevator gave a sudden jerk and a shudder, then ground to a slow halt. The lights flashed and then went out, and then the emergency lights flickered on with an electric crackle. Gabriel froze in place, heart jamming itself into his throat as every horror movie involving elevators rushed to the forefront of his mind.

When nothing happened--as in, when they didn't go plummeting to their gruesome deaths--he slowly peeled his fingers from the railing; he had been gripping it tight enough to hurt.

"W...what just happened?"

This was an overreaction. What he'd said was not that bad, even for him. Tierney was just inventing things to take offense to, now.

Aydan was about to tell him just that when the elevator lurched and threw him off his feet. He collided with Tierney—unintentional, but an act that would undoubtedly elicit outrage—and grappled with the Pilot and the hand railing to keep his feet under him as the elevator jerked to a halt.

He scarcely breathed for anticipation of a sudden fall.

"You could find out easier than I could." Psychic and all that. He still clutched the Pilot close. That part was intentional.

Heart hammering in his chest, still afraid to move or scarcely breathe in case doing so caused some cataclysmic disaster, it was a few delayed seconds before he noticed creepazoid had gone all koala-cling on him. He gave a start when realization struck, body tensing, and elbowed him off of him more roughly than necessary.

"Get off," he snapped, pushing him back. "And shut up. I know that. I just...just shut up, alright?"

He hated to admit the guy had a point, and hated that this entire situation had frazzled him way more than he liked.

Doing his best to calm his nerves and anger, he reached out to Siren--who confirmed what he'd dreaded and told him to hang tight.

Gabriel wanted to beat his head against the wall. It wouldn't be long before he'd be climbing them.

"The engine overheated," he said after a pause, wedging himself into a corner and crossing his arms over his chest. "A tech team's on the way."

Aydan let go immediately. He wasn't going to get into a physical altercation with a Pilot. He could think of few quicker ways to get thoroughly beaten to within an inch of his life.

"Then we get to spend some time together." Aydan took up a post on the opposite wall, relaxing with his hands in his pockets.

"Oh, joy and jubilation." Gabriel let out a loud sigh and glanced at the wall, since the only other thing to look at was Aydan and he really couldn't stand the smug bastard. Just how he wanted to spend his day, trapped in a box suspended who knows how many feet in the air...

He was silent for several minutes. But in the end, Gabriel had never been good at giving anyone the silent treatment (he was usually the first to crack when he tried it), and even if his company sucked, he found he did have questions.

He flicked a glance at Aydan. "Why do you hate your son so much?"

Now that confused Aydan. That he had little regard for Temple was something he'd always allowed others to see. Roman, though, was a different matter.

"What gives you the impression that I hate Roman?"

It was rather the other way around.

Gabriel rolled his eyes and heaved an exasperated sigh. "Uh, I dunno. Might be 'cause you couldn't give two shits about him when he was dying! Or that you show up just to put him down? Seriously, dude, you're like a vulture. A creepy-ass vulture just circling around and picking at crap before it's even stopped twitching. I mean, 'call me when you pull the plug', who says that?"

Aydan let out a short laugh. "Oh, you mean the hospital."

He pulled a cigarette and lighter from his pocket. "What makes you think you can even fathom a parent's grief in that situation?"

"Oh yeah, I could tell you were really torn up about--" Gabriel cut off when Ayden whipped out the cigarette. "Don't you even. You wanna lock yourself in a box and snort cancer, you do it in a different box."

Aydan froze. He fixed Gabriel with a stare that suggested he was considering lighting up anyway, then returned cigarette and lighter to his pocket. "Yes, sir."

He would never have challenged the Pilot on the matter, only wanted to make him think he would. Pilots used violence quickly and easily. Aydan would just lose any physical altercation.
