I'm a mechanic, not a magician! [open!]

What started as a normal day at the shop, replacing a couple spark plugs and one primary coil, went to shit fast as soon as the tremors started.

It went to hell when the things that had been causing those tremors started clawing their way up through the earth.

Heart pounding, hands shaking, and breathing strained as she tried not to breathe too heavily in an effort at keeping as silent as possible, Terra had the garage door shut and the only other door into the place shut and locked. There was a window, though, and she'd shuttered it; the things she'd glimpsed didn't have any eyes that she could see (not that she had been looking too closely) so hopefully nothing would think to try it. Still, Terra stood resolutely facing it, a heavy wrench in one hand and her push-broom propped against her other arm. Those were her best weapons and if something got inside, so help her, she swore she'd bash in its skull before it took her!

Outside, it sounded like chaos. People crying out, people shouting, loud snarls--domestic animals or those awful things, she couldn't tell, but she knew they were out there. She'd seen three of them just before she'd run into her shop and locked everything down.

And now she was stuck here, alone, with no way to call out for help.

She took a deep breath and paused to wipe her sweaty palms on her greasy overalls, tail twitching behind her and ears pricked forward, straining to listen. So far, so good. So far--

That was when her door came down with the loud crunch of splintering wood.

For one rare moment in Terra's life, she was glad she was mute. It meant she didn't scream when the shepherd-sized creature, which looked like a bizarre, hairless, eyeless cross between a dog and a badger, filled the doorway, its large, horrifically clawed forepaws clicking against the concrete floor. Its long nose moved, whiskers twitching, and Terra could hear it sniffing the air. Its head swiveled and pointed at her, and its lip curled to reveal gleaming fangs.

Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck!

Terra slipped the wrench into her pocket and hefted the push-broom with both hands as she backed away from it, trying to make as little noise as possible as it stalked forward into the room. Her back hit something--one of the motorcycles--and she gasped.

That was all it took.

With an unearthly snarl, the thing launched itself at her.

Crying out silently, Terra threw herself to the side and the creature crashed into the motorcycle, sprawling across the floor, but it quickly righted itself and went for her again, following the sound of her footsteps as she dashed toward the door. Terra spun just in time, bringing the broom with her, and the creature got a mouthful of bristle. Roaring in rage, it chomped down on the broom and shook its head viciously, and Terra hung on for dear life, because that broom--and its long handle--was the only thing between them.

Riler was just eating his lunch when things went to hell. Couldn't even have some down time to eat a lunch in peace huh? Well whatever, he would get back to it when the creatures were dispatched he supposed.

Noticing the commotion of the door being crashed open to the mechanic shop across the street. He ran over to see what was going on, taking a long blade from his belt while running. He hadn't really been in that mechanic shop before but it looked like someone was having trouble. Why she hadn't screamed was confusing to him but he probably could discuss it later.

He jumped on the things back, and stabbed it where ever he could reach as the thing writhed beneath him. Jumping on it was probably unnecessary and stupid but he didn't want to get bit or scratched by it.

Terra was starting to think this was it, this was the end, this was how she was going to go, torn to bits and eaten by a bug monster. And yet as she clung to the broom as the creature chomped the end and thrashed it about, she wasn't even scared. Adrenaline was pumping through her every vein and every ounce of energy was being channeled into holding on and surviving. Fear had no room there, not yet.

And then the handle slipped from her grip.

With a gasp, Terra was tossed to the side and sent rolling across the floor, and she looked up just in time to see the beast toss its head, catch the broom handle, and snap it in half with one crunching bite. Then it crouched down, muscles rippling and saliva dripping from its jaws as it prepared to pounce. This was it! Pulling her wrench free from her overalls, Terra scrambled to her knees and raised it like the most ineffectual club ever.

That was when someone jumped on the beast. It was a man, someone she hadn't seen before, and she watched with wide eyes as he landed on the creature and began to stab it as it bucked and writhed and screeched. He must have hit something vital, though, because suddenly the thing went very stiff and let out a rattling shudder before it collapsed in a heap, dark blood pooling around it.

Then it just lay there, twitching.

Feeling ill, Terra lowered her wrench and sucked in heaving breaths as she realized then that she'd been holding her breath.

That...that had been close...

Feeling shaky, she looked over at the man and, slowly, climbed to her feet.

"Are you okay?" she signed, even though she wasn't sure he understood sign language.

He probably shouldn't have jumped on that creature like that. That was a tad reckless and unorthodox. At least it worked though. In the very least there wasn't carpet beneath it, that would have been a bitch to clean.

He got off it and slid the blade back in his belt, breathing heavy as the adrenaline left his system. Catching his breath he looked over at the girl and tilted his head in confusion. She was doing something with her hands but he couldn't figure out what. Could it possibly be some kind of language? That would make sense since she hadn't said a word thus far.

Luckily he hadn't really gotten blood on his clothes this time, and if he had it was hard to tell. Wearing black totally had its advantages in his profession. He took out a small notepad in a flash of intelligence and handed it to her.

"Hopefully you can write. Cause I don't have other ideas of how to communicate."

Sigh. She should have expected that he wouldn't understand. Only a few close friends did, and a few people at the businesses she frequented had come to learn some basic gestures. For everyone else, it was good ol' pencil and paper--or typing on her datapad, which she'd stupidly forgotten at home.

Luckily, he had a notepad! That would make things significantly less awkward!

Taking it from him with a quick, signed, "Thank you," she scribbled furiously on the pad and flipped it around for him to see the short, hasty message. Writing out long, complicated sentences by hand was a pain in the ass.

Not deaf, just mute. Name is Terra. Thank you. Are you hurt? Are there more outside?

"Riler. Um..." he listened for a seconded " well sounds like there is commotion everywhere honestly. Maybe a couple buildings down though is the closest."

He was pretty good at telling how far away things were with sound. Came with his profession though. It hadn't always been that way. He had honed it in the past couple of years for survivals sake.

"Not hurt, just suprised and a little annoyed I didnt get to finish my lunch heh. Think we should bury the critter maybe?" he said nudging it with his boot.

Another spurt of blood from yet another cut, and the beast finally went down. Jael hadn't been spared from the sprays of bodily fluid, and now had splotches of darkening red on various parts of her body. She swiped her forehead with her free hand, smearing the blood around more than actually removing it, and looked around.

There were still multiple blind beasts about, and all the screaming was not helping her makeshift team work. Well, it did help conceal their much quieter presence and more precise attacks, but it put the more vulnerable folk at risk. Even though the beasts had a good sense of smell, it was the sounds that were driving them crazy.

"Keep them from the buildings! If you aren't a fighter, take cover! Find refuge and then keep quiet!" She twirled her naginata and ran after another beast that had escaped her before. She was sure it had headed in this direction, and she hoped it hadn't gotten to anyone. The other beasts were distracted with members of her team, so she decided it safe enough to split from the group for a moment.

Slowing as she weaved through some quieter buildings, Jael came across a building that looked like it had been wrecked. She mentally crossed her fingers that whomever had been inside had gotten away. She heard little noise and crept closer until she could see inside.

The creature was dead. It wasn't moving, and blood gathered beneath it. A few steps more and she finally noticed two people near it. Looking at the animal's wounds, she gathered that the man with his blade had been the one to bring it down. Their own relaxed posture told her it was down for good, and allowed her to calm down as well.

"Hey! You kids alright?" She walked towards them, noting that neither seemed to have injuries. ...Visible ones, at least.
Rest assured, I see all of you lovely people's posts, but expect me to be a bit slower responding.

(OOC: Ffffffff so sorry for the crazy delay. Dx)

Terra stared at him as though he'd gone mad. Bury it? Why would they want to bury it? There could be more! They didn't have time to bury anything! They needed to get out of here and get somewhere safe before more of the beasts came burrowing to the surface!

She shook her head vigorously and pointed for the door in a clear sign of, "Fuck no, let's go!" And she had been prepared to lead the way out when another woman with strange, intense eyes stepped inside, stalling her.

Her eyes only gave her pause for a second, because the blade became her top priority. Another person armed with a weapon, and one that had seen use, at that! Excellent! She would not mind having more fighters around her!

At her question, Terra nodded her head and mouthed, "Yes." Then she pointed to the door and raised an eyebrow. The blood on that blade looked fresh. Were there more out there, or was it safe to get the hell out of dodge?

In hindsight that was not very smart comment by him. He'd think about it later though. Creature dead body taking care of could probably wait until the town wasnt being attacked. He wondered briefly why this all was happening in the first place. Some one else would probably figure that out too though.

"What's going on anyway? They dont usually attack in mass or anything.....Plus whats the plan?" he naturally deferred to the her as she looked well, intense and in charge.

[ooc: I'm gonna assume the other person is gone... xD]

Terra shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. She wasn't sure. Honestly, she had never experienced an attack from within Teinar, and she made it a point not to venture outside of it unless she absolutely had to--or if she thought she could scrounge up some materials from beyond. This? These creatures? This was exactly why she stayed inside as much as she could.

Either way, they had to get out of here! The last thing they wanted was to be cornered in a room with only one exit.

Pausing to listen carefully for a moment, Terra made a motion at him, for him to wait a second, and then headed across the room to a supply closet. Reaching inside, she pulled out a crowbar and a large, heavy hammer. They weren't great as far as weapons went, but they were better than nothing. And on second thought, she grabbed her two largest screwdrivers and slipped one into her belt.

She offered both a screwdriver and the hammer to the black-haired guy, and kept the crowbar for herself. Then she nodded to the door and headed that way. They needed to get somewhere safer now.

He tucked the screwdriver into his belt,  not really caring how makeshift it might look to others. He wasn't sure why he would need it exactly, what with having a perfectly good knife at his side, but one could never have to many weapons.

The hammer had a nice weight to it, and the adrenaline of being attacked seemed to make it a little less heavy than it might be normally. He held the hammer and slid the knife back into its sheath. He had to get himself one of these. It seemed sturdier than his knife somehow.

"Thanks" he said and than followed after her, asking questions would waste time since she had to write out answers. They needed to go now.

Beyond the door, the world outside was...chaotic.

Those strange things were all over, skittering about and breaking into buildings, but they were not without resistance. Some Teinari hunters in the area were doing what they could to hold them off, and many average citizens had joined in, fighting the beasts with whatever they had available. In the distance, a gunshot went off and Terra flinched at the noise, ears stiff and upright.

Shiiiit. They were right in the thick of things. They needed to get the hell out of here!

Eyes darting, Terra looked in all directions, spotted a clear path, and waved to Riler before, taking a deep breath, she took off running. If they could get to the tunnels, they could possibly wait out the attack...maybe. Unless the things were also in the tunnels.

Down wouldn't be his first choice really. He knew the tunnels sure but with the creatures coming from below, who is saying they won't be down there as well. To bad they really didn't have a choice at the moment though. He could probably help her not get lost at least.

He took off after her, taking the opportunity as it was presented, dodging out of the way of claws, pinchers and slashing weapons. They finally got to the tunnels though, unscathed for now at least. The glowing vines that grew on the inside were at least okay to see by for awhile.

"Down or up? Cause if they are coming from below..." He asked
