Title: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]
Post by: GIR on September 28, 2015, 06:23:10 pm
<Sir, the upper deck of the Valari Hesta has been blown and scrubbed as per your orders. The slave is being transferred to your quarters as we speak.>, the XO announced, antennae forward in a gesture of greeting.

<Excellent. Do we have a clear path to approach?>, Rhevi asked as he returned the greeting, then began swimming toward the docking bay.

<Aye, sir. We lucked out. Orias is on the other side of the system's primary. Hesta-actual has confirmed delivery meets the criteria of an Article-26 non-military delivery of convenience.  Command has given us a three-day window.>

<Received. You have the deck.>

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The captain's quarters of the Valari Hesta-class scout ship were, though the ship was barely 150 meters from the curve of the bow to the point of the stern, spacious and lavish, designed not only to accommodate the ship's commanding officer, but also up to four of his slaves, in (relative, in the case of the slaves) comfort. To this end, it was divided into two sections: A flooded captain's area, in which the captain lived in what amounted to a relatively large fishtank, complete with several smaller sea creatures native to Hesta that were as close to candy as Hestari foods really got, aside from the processed fish bars that served as dry-land snacks, and the distinctive blood-red water from the Hestari homeworld of Hesta, water that had gotten its color from pollutants during Hesta's early space age. The area was marked by warning signs that were changed to display in the languages read by slave species, and several dog-sized crabs similar to king crabs scuttled about near it, occasionally entering to clean the tank, or to simply sit inside and breath through their gills.

As for the dry area, it contained four comfortably small rooms, each with its own filtration and oxygen scrubbers, and one medium-sized common area with a food synthesizer, basic dishware, and, as per Rhevi's orders, a small read-only computer (that could be told which videos to display, and what music to play, and given no other instructions). A sign over the door indicated the direction to the restrooms. A shelf area with an automatic dishwasher far too small to fit a Feylini in, and with programming that would not allow it to close with any living organic matter larger than an insect inside of it provided a way to clean the dishware, and a couch just large enough to seat two provided a place to sit, and just soft enough to not harm the occupant (though a fair way from comfortable), sat next to a small table with a tiny lamp for reading by.

Two of the waist-high horseshoe-crab-like beings which seemed to function as the Hestari answer to guard dogs and one large Hestari female of the same subspecies and tribe as Rhevi, distinguishable from him mainly by the fact that she was a good two feet shorter than him, stood guard near the airlock to the captain's section, but no other guards were in or near the room. The inhibitor collars Hestari fitted their vertebrate slaves with were designed to deter escape by activating the pain centers of the slave if he or she were to set foot in an area of the ship they were not permitted to be in. This was the (excruciating) warning. After six minutes, the collar would send a 'kill' signal to the brain, forcing the brain stem to shut down and killing the host, a process explained ( and often demonstrated) to slaves shortly after purchase. The collar also served to identify the owner of the slaves, serving in place of a brand alongside a much less obvious subdermal microchip.

Next to the computer was a small holoplayer, its disk set to display the appearance and important details of Sarah, including her temperament and a list of things never to say to her or do in her presence.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sarah's departure had been, suffice it to say, sudden. Between informing Ari of her intentions, receiving his reply, packing, and creating a ship to leave on (a much smaller, much faster fighter than the last time she'd left, this one armed to the proverbial bone), less than one human minute had passed, during which the only progress she'd made on the projects she had been working on had been to write notes in the nearest terminals to each one explaining what had been done, what needed to be done, and where to find hastily (yet still expertly) crafted parts where needed, and detailed installation instructions. By the time Sarah realised she'd left the email open, she was already plotting the coordinates for the second of a total of four warps.

At the time she'd left, the expected arrival time of Ranah's 'gift' had been three days out, with no plans to forward it due to her not having read the post script. It was now two days after the intended delivery date.

Out of the frying pan and into the fryer.

That aptly described Sitara's current situation.

She supposed she should feel lucky, that she didn't wind up in Rividean claws, but now she was on some crab people ship! And she didn't know what the fuck was going on! Maybe this was better? But maybe it was worse! Maybe they were going to eat her! But then again, so too did Rivideans eat Feylini.

So basically, it all boiled down to one truth: she was so screwed and she hated everything.

Sitara paced her room, having not sat still since she arrived. She was a bundle of nervous, pent-up energy with no outlet for it all, and since wailing and crying had never been in her nature, she poured all her fear out in the form of aggression.

Which, in Sitara's case, meant that once pacing became boring, she was soon kicking the couch, then yanking the cushions off of it and chucking them one at a time at those stupid giant dog crab monster things!

"Is ANYBODY gonna tell me WHAT THE FUCK is going on?!" she yelled, and when she ran out of cushions, she made her way to the dishwasher, opening it and slamming it hard enough to rattle its insides. "Gods fucking dammit! Just lemme go! This is so stupid! Stupid ugly crab monsters, I swear to gods, if you perv on me I'll bite your fucking antennae off!"

<I wouldn't provoke the Valari Hesta if I were you.>, the Hestari guard almost boredly warned the raging rabbit, <They're not intelligent enough to be merciful. Also, you'll note you were not provided with any scrubbing pads or dish stones. If you break that machine, your dishes won't be washed. At all.>, she continued, tempted to see if the Feylini would make good on her threat. An announcement on the ship's loudspeakers, however, killed the idea in its tracks.

"Attention all hands: Fleet Hunter Rhevi Varrah is aboard. Schoolmaster* Vahri Sehnah stands relieved.". The announcement, its voice mechanical, first spoke in Hestari (Northern Sea dialect), then translated it to two other Hestari dialects before a mispronounced and somewhat literal translation into Feylini, with the word 'hands' replaced by 'slaves' in each of the translations**.

<Behave yourself, smeerp. I hear the Fleet Hunter's a real hardass. And a huge perv. Word is, he feels his slaves up every hour, on the hour.>, the guard mocked, her lower mouth-plate lowering just enough to reveal the upper one in an expression of mockery. Of course, it wasn't really true, and she'd owe Rhevi some serious favors if he even agreed to go along with it, but the guard, much like the Feylini she was addressing, was young and somewhat brash. The mature, experienced soldiers tended to be in the assault teams and instructor corps if they weren't running the ship. If the slave didn't know enough to know Hestari couldn't mate with her kind if they wanted to, well, she probably wouldn't know the personalities of each of the thousands of officers in the Hestari military.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<Make the dive as soon as the inertial dampeners are active. We're on a tight schedule here, and I don't want to have to try for another meet.>, Rhevi ordered as soon as he'd gone through the formalities of boarding the vessel, then swam to the airlock separating the blown deck of the ship from the flooded rest of it, a single female of the Sevarik*** subspecies, a foot taller than him, and with a head resembling that of a hammerhead shark rather than a great white, following behind him. Once the pair had transitioned to the upper deck and gone through decontamination, Rhevi headed straight for the captain's quarters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<Officer on deck.>, Rhevi stated as he entered the room, the Sevarik female automatically going to her room in the slave quarters without any apparent orders.

<Received, Sir. The new acquisition has been making a mess and shouting, sir, but has done nothing else of note. It is this soldier's belief that the new acquisition has not looked over the information given.>, the guard publicly reported. <Sir, if I may, I told the slave you were a major hardass, and that you were a perv. She made a threat, so I figured I'd scare her a bit. If I may impose... Any chance I could owe you big to play along, sir?>, she added privately. Only to put her hands behind her back in an expression of fear when Rhevi bared his teeth in what might have been mistaken for a grin if not for the aggressive posture.

<We'll talk about your lack of discipline later, Soldier.>, he told her privately, <For now, keep your thoughts to deep waters. It's bad enough we're basically delivering a slave to a former slave. Let's not give her any ideas that might reach the wrong ears. As to the hardass routine, I might be able to channel some semblance of my inner drill instructor for a time. My sister informs me this one strays shallow with her words. She may not live long if she doesn't learn at least some restraint.>. Publicly, <Very well. Leave us.>

<Yes, Sir.>, the guard replied, stepping out of the room with the two Valari Hesta**** in tow.

Rhevi waited several moments before turning to face the Feylini, reviewing security footage on his arm terminal as he waited. <You know, not all slaves are provided a couch to sit on. In fact, on a ship of this class, typically, slaves do not sit. Perhaps you should treat the furnishings with some respect.>, He admonished, his 'tone' sharper than he'd usually use, <Now, if you have any interest in answers, you'll pick up this mess you made, then sit down like a civilised, intelligent being.>, he stated, his 'tone' leaving little room for doubt that it was an order from a male used to being obeyed. As the Sevarik female started to leave her room to help, Rhevi dismissed her with a gesture, the female making no response as she went back into the room.

[Notes:

*A Hestari military rank equivalent to a Commander. The 'School' is 'school' as one of the terms for a group of sharks, not 'school' as in the educational institution.

**Hestari of different subspecies generally do not serve on the same ships, with the exception of the Sevarik and Sevarik Hesta subspecies, both of which are typically slaves to the other subspecies.

***The Sevarik subspecies is highly intelligent and physically strong, but does not possess self-awareness. They are often enslaved and used in areas that require intelligence, but not free thought, including types of work which would be boring and repetitive, but still require high precision and intelligence.

Euuugh...

Seriously. These things were hideous. Sitara glowered at her guard, whose gender she couldn't begin to guess. Male? Female? Non-binary? Both? She didn't know how that worked for crab-bug-monster people, she just knew their mouths freaked her out.

As did everything else about them.

"Oh, gross, really? What the hell's with you primitive beasts, anyway? Rivideans, crab people--are all extraterrestrial males just giant balls of sleaze and rape?!" Sitara growled, and gave the dishwasher another kick before setting her hands on her hips, one ear twitching along with her left eye. "I'd like to see the fucker try. I'll gnaw his fucking arm off! I've eaten crab before, you know that? Tastes delicious! All that's missing is butter and garlic!"

Soon enough, another one of the things entered, a huge one, but Sitara glared right at him as the guard did her report. Ah. So that must be Captain Hardass Badtouch. Her glare intensified and she snorted at the news that she hadn't read the information. Nope. She hadn't. Hadn't bothered. Wasn't interested. She just wanted out of here.

Despite her bluster, though, she couldn't help the chill that went down her spine unbidden when he bid the other to leave them. Alone. She may have tried to play it off with a lot of bullshit and bold threats, but she was afraid--terrified. She didn't want to be eaten! Or felt up. Did these crab people even have the right...parts? Oh gods. And their mouths. Shit. She didn't want those anywhere near any part of her. Imagine kissing those. Could they kiss?

Her heart beat faster, her palms going sweaty, her face going pale.

Yeah, she was so not about private times with Captain Hardass Badtouch.

"Nah, I'd prefer to stay standing Mister Badtouch, thanks!" she blurted, and moved so that the couch was between she and him. Stay on her feet so she could spring out of the way if he decided to get weird. Weirder. These people were already weird. She was never going to get used to the way they spoke--super creepy, eugh. "Just tell me what the fuck's going on and who you are! You with the Rividean assholes?"

The guard merely nodded jovially at the bluster, the Hestari equivalent of a laugh, <You won't. Not if you like having teeth that aren't broken and lips that aren't bleeding. It'd be like biting titanium wrapped in especially sharp gritpaper.>, she answered, the mocking expression still on her face.

Just before she left the room, the guard took a moment to shoot the Feylini another mocking 'smile'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rhevi's expression did not change as he waited through the Feylini's antics and rudeness. Bluster from a scared being was all it was, an impression confirmed by the slight change in the temperature of her face as the blood drained from it in fear.

<Varrah. Fleet Hunter. 362987-76321Rhenik-Sahlu.>, he simply stated when she'd finished her remarks. As he waited for her to obey his command, Rhevi walked over to the food synthesizer and had it make three fish bars, salt-and-kashal-blubber flavor, and one snack bar made of salted kelp, a favorite among some of the herbivorous slaves, then walked back to the hatch to the airlock of the captain's area. Instead of going in, however, he simply stood where the guard had been and began eating, watching Sitara mutely as he did. When he finished one of the bars, he went back to checking his wrist terminal, making sure to look up every so often to remind the girl that he hadn't forgotten her.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As soon as he'd verified that the ship was under way, set up a loop for the security cameras, double-checked the plans, and written a message to his sister updating her on the situation, Rhevi pressed a button on his wrist terminal. As soon as he did, the hammerhead-headed Sevarik female, Rhevi's slave, emerged from her room, then went to stand guard by the door to the captain's area. <Sevarik. Notify me the moment when the Feylini wishes to cooperate. If she gets too unruly, you may administer discipline and rewards as you see fit.>, he ordered publicly, handing her the remaining fish bars and kelp bar before going into the captain's area, leaving the wall facing the slave quarters transparent as he swam in lazy circles. <One more thing. Feylini, we surface in two of your hours. Once we do, you'll immediately be transferred to another ship, with no access to any information except your destination. If you want to know what's going on so badly, and if you want to survive where you're going, you'll cooperate.>, he added after a glance at his work terminal.

As soon as the leader left, Sitara grabbed the ends of her ears and threw her head back with an exasperated scream. She didn't understand what anything meant that that creep had just said! Yet he'd said it like that answered her questions precisely--and none of it had been particularly reassuring! And then he acted like she was being crazy and awful for freaking out when they were the ones freaking her out!

She took deep breaths when she was done screaming out her lungs and clawed her hands over her face in frustration--and to hide the tears pricking at the edges of her vision. Despite all her aggression and bluster, she knew she didn't have a chance against these brutes. All she knew was she had gone from one terrifying captor to the next, that her fate was uncertain and out of her hands--and she was scared to death. How alike the Rivideans were these creatures? Were they going to eat her? Rape her? Use her as a test subject? Who knew! But she wasn't stupid enough to believe being CIVIL was going to get her anywhere! Yes, let's be civil while they prepare a boiling pot to cook her in, lobster style!

And yet his parting words were the nail in the coffin--as well as delivering some vital information. If she didn't cooperate, she wouldn't get answers. And more importantly...

She was being transferred to another ship?!

It wasn't in her nature to be meek and submissive. But a new flash of fear and uncertainty struck her at those words, and she swallowed hard past the lump in her throat. She had to calm down and think. And after having a good scream, after getting that out of her system...maybe she would be less inclined to scream at them.

She tugged at her ears. "Okay. Look. Fine. Alright. I'll cooperate, just...what do you want from me? What's good enough cooperation for you?"

As the Feylini screamed in frustration, the Sevarik stood and watched. It was simply one of many reactions new slaves had, in the Sevarik's experience, and it was typically a short-lived reaction which resolved itself when the slave was either tired of screaming, or when reason prevailed and the slave realised there was no point in resisting. In the cases where such actions didn't resolve themselves, corporal punishment typically resolved the situation, though, in this case, the Sevarik saw no need for such action just yet. The Feylini would likely tire herself out and need to be awoken, but that action would happen later. For the moment, the Sevarik was content to eat one of the remaining fish bars and watch.

The face clawing would have sparked a warning growl from the Sevarik had it not been for what followed. The awaited moment that reason won out. As the Sevarik approached the Feylini, she sent a telepathic message to her master, informing him of the slave's apparent change in heart word-for-word, then set the remaining fish bar and the kelp bar on the small table before returning to her post at the hatch to the captain's area to resume her supervision.

<Excellent.>, Rhevi answered, speaking privately to Sitara as he swam to the transparent wall, then allowed himself to sink to the floor in his 'land' configuration, facing Sitara, <A good start would be to clean the mess you made earlier, and review the information on the holoplayer disk. That will tell you who you will eventually be dealing with. As a show of good faith, I will tell you that the ship you are being transferred to will bring you to her, and she is neither Rividean nor connected with them. It would be... excruciatingly unwise... to imply otherwise in her presence. The two snack bars my slave has set on the table are for you. One is made of various fish that, to my knowledge, are not toxic to your kind, assuming your kind share the same dietary tolerances as humans, the other is kelp. Both are salty, so, after you finish cleaning, feel free to use the synthesizer to make something more to your taste. Continue to be cooperative, and you will know everything I do about our plans for you long before we surface.>, he explained, arms crossed in an attempt at the body language he'd seen humans use to project strength during negotiations.

Not a Rividean ship?

And it was a "she" that she was being transferred to?

Sitara blinked at the news, but she didn't relax. She wasn't out of the fryer yet. This mystery woman could be just as bad as any Rividean, for all she knew, and the vagueness around it all was excruciating.

But. Cooperation. Cooperation meant information. She could suck it up for now.

She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and nodded. "Alright," she said, and she walked around to gather up the cushions she'd tossed about, and set them neatly on the couch as her captor spoke. Most of it was stuff she wasn't interested in. Like food. Oh, she was hungry, probably; she hadn't eaten in over a day. But she was so tight and sick with nerves she had no appetite, and something fishy and salty didn't sound particularly good right then.

So, ignoring the bars, she instead went to the holoplayer and turned it on.

Most of the information on the holodisk was fairly standard species information, information on Sarah's appearance, including a full-color, three-dimensional image of her in her usual overalls, all but the last four feet of her tail wrapped around her waist in such a fashion as to still allow her to strike quickly, but still keep the appendage out of her way. Barely out of 'frame' in the hologram was part of a ship's sublight engine, dismantled, over which Sarah was bent, apparently in the middle of inspecting.

Along with the image, the holoplayer displayed general notes about her short temper in simply-bordered 'pages', including a warning not to confuse her with a Rividean or a dragon (the latter gleaned from emails sent to Ranah), and specifying that, while carnivorous, Sarah tended to confine her hunting to non-humanoid creatures with humans as the (relatively rare) sole exception, and generally preferred birds, fish, cephalopods, and aquatic mammals to anything with fur. Of note, however, was an entire 'page' dedicated to as much of her history as a slave as Rhevi had been able to dig up, including her former 'name', with a warning at the bottom that Sarah did not like talking about any of it without a good reason.

<When you have finished looking through the information on that holodisk, inform my slave. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you're wondering why I'm not telling you to tell me directly,>, Rhevi said, soundlessly rapping on the transparent wall, <I can't actually hear you. Everything you're saying to me is being relayed to me word-for-word by my slave. One of the many uses of the Sevarik subspecies.>, he explained, <If you're thirsty, any of the taps on this deck will provide purified water.>.

...Oh great. So she was going from a Rividean to some sort of dinosaur monster? From one sharp-toothed lizard to another, FANTASTIC.

Not feeling very reassured, especially since her species didn't look so different from a human, Sitara gave an uneasy look over at what she assumed was the creature's slave. Since the beast was the only other thing in the room with her and all. This was so weird, using some odd creature like a telephone, basically!

"Uhhhh...so...I'm done?  And I have a shitton of questions for your master person so I hope he's ready," she said, as she turned and marched for one of the taps and drank straight from it. She'd trust his word that they were fine; she supposed if they were contaminated, it might not be such a bad thing, since she might just get eaten by that dragon-dinosaur-not-a-Rividean anyway!

As the Feylini went through the information on the holodisk, Rhevi took the time to do some paperwork, keeping an eye on Sitara as he did via a camera mounted and connected to the terminal in the captain's area for just such a purpose, and noting that she seemed no more at ease after going through the info than she had been before.

As soon as Sitara's words had been relayed to him, Rhevi locked the terminal, then exited the captain's area, a process taking several seconds as the decontamination section of it thoroughly rinsed the toxic water from within the tank off of him.

<Excellent. To answer perhaps the most pressing one, Sarah won't mistake you for a human. Like touch with my species and sight to humans, scent is the most important and most developed sense to her species, and your species has a different scent than humans even to my antennae. She also won't eat you partly because my sister and I have asked her not to, and partly because you're much more familiar with Jeth than she is, and you acting as her guide is how you will earn your freedom, a concept she understands very well, as it was not so long ago, to my kind, at least, that she earned hers.>, he explained privately as he walked over to the couch and stood near it, waiting for her to finish drinking, <Have a seat and fire away. We should have plenty of time to answer your questions before the transfer.>, he continued, adding, <By the way, the name's Rhevi. Fleet Hunter Varrah if you wish to address me formally.> as an afterthought.

Sitara was done with sitting. She wanted to pace some more, feeling restless and ansty and even more so now that he had mentioned Jeth and her being a guide to that place?! A guide! Oh no. Oh HELL no! Just the idea filled her with palatable dread, and made the walls around her feel all the more oppressive.

But she wanted answers, and she knew she wouldn't get them if she didn't sit her ass down and play the good girl for now.

Ears twitching, muscles tense with nerves, she wiped water from her lips and trudged over to the couch, taking a seat on the edge as though perched to flee at a moment's notice. She crossed one leg over the other, but her foot bounced restlessly as she looked up at her strange, very alien captor.

"Okay, so, not a question but like first thing's first, there is no fucking way in hell I'm going back to Jeth," she said. "Just to clear that up. 'Cause I ain't being a guide. Not there. Fuck no. She can eat me or whatever but that place's like deathrape central like is she CRAZY?"
Title: Re: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]

<That depends entirely on your definition of crazy>, Rhevi replied, with slight amusement in his 'tone', <But I guarantee that wherever she is will be the safest place on the planet for you so long as you keep your words and actions deep. Sarah may be brash, headstrong, and have a temper, but she's also faster, tougher, and smarter than she looks, and her command of magic is greater than many human mages I've fought. She knows, more or less, what she's doing, and, best for you, she intends to free your people. Allowing you to be captured or killed would be slightly counterproductive to that end.>

<As for you not going back to Jeth, well, you will if you want to be free again. You don't even have to stay when you're done. My sister has seen to it that your contract includes a clause which would require Sarah to build you reliable transport to any place of your choosing once you've earned your freedom, and to pilot you there if you do not have the skills necessary. >, Rhevi continued, <There is one Rividean I've heard about who would be bold enough to make repeated attempts to capture you, but I'm told his tastes run... curvier. I highly doubt you would be worth the trouble to him. Sarah will see to that.>

"...Wait, hold up," Sitara said, holding up her hands. "Back up. This lizard lady wants to free my people? Like...from the Rivideans? Like...wait...why?"

She stared at the crab man, blue eyes wide. "Like, not that I'm saying that's a bad thing, don't get me wrong, that's awesome! Yay, free my people from the awful slaughterbeasts, nice! But like...correct me if I'm wrong here but Sarah is like...one person...? And Jeth is like...a planet. Occupied by sociopathic murdermonsters. Lots of them."

She scratched nervously at an ear. "She might be like powerful and stuff, but um...we're gonna like die if we go back."

<She was once a slave herself. Of course she'd want to free any other slaves she heard of. An entire civilisation being kept as slaves is something you couldn't stop her from putting an end to if you wanted to, unless she actually respected you enough to listen.>, Rhevi answered, <For her, it's more about stopping the Rivideans than helping your people. Freeing your people happens to be the next best thing to trying to stop a planet she doesn't know the location of.>

<In the time it took you to say that, Sarah could have built herself a tank from the ground up, if she knows how to build one.>, Rhevi explained, <And she's smart. She won't try to take over the entire planet at once. She'll set up a camp somewhere, one that's easy to hide, but provides everything possible that the two of you will need, and, if she remembers what she learned in her days on Faren, she'll make small, precise strikes, and disrupt their chain of command whenever the opportunity presents itself. Not to mention she's worked on enough ships' weapons to build her own. For someone like her, it would be child's play to convert them into point defenses and artillery if the need arises, and such weapons, the way she'd build them, would be highly useful for ambushes. As for enemy weapons and defenses, she needs only to take a machine apart once to know how to not only build it, but also how to destroy or disable it. At a distance, if it isn't immune to magic.> He continued.

<On a side note, I wouldn't advise you calling her a lizard to her face, though, to be fair, it's probably one of the less offensive things she's been called by people who don't know her species.>

It all sounded way too good to be true, and Sitara couldn't help feeling...well, skeptical was a massive understatement. Skeptical, and panicked. Oh god, this stupid lizard lady was going to get her killed, she just knew it! She desperately didn't want to go back to Jeth now that she was off that doomed planet! She and her little group had thought they were being careful...

And then they'd been caught. Caught, and sold on the slave block. Sitara was damned lucky she'd been bought by these fellows instead. Her friends? Not so lucky.

Her stomach twisted, sharp and sudden, at the thought--a thought she hadn't allowed herself to think until now. No, prior to this, she'd had her own fate to worry about, a fate she figured she'd share with them, but somehow she'd been lucky. Her friends...oh gods...

Sitara paled, looking suddenly ill, and swallowed hard. Why had she been the lucky one, and not them? Why had she been chosen? It could have been any of them. But they were still there, probably in Rividea, and--she didn't want to think of the rest. She bit her lip, her throat and chest tightening with emotion, but she took a deep breath and held it back. Every instinct screamed at her, told her this was madness, that there was no hope for those who had been taken, that they were probably dead by now. But what if they weren't? What if they were there being...being tortured and...

She tugged at the ends of her ears, shoulders hunching. "You...you really think she's got a shot?" she asked, voice oddly small.

<If I didn't, I would never have allowed my sister to send her the coordinates, nor would I have needed to stop her. She's worked with rebels before, on Faren. She knows her way around guerrilla warfare.>, Rhevi replied, <You'll have all the proof you need once you get there, though you could also ask her employer. It's his ship you'll be going on. Fair warning: Draw your line in the sand early. Sarah tells me he's a lecher, but she also informs me he's no rapist. He's a persistent ass, according to her, but he'll keep his hands off until you say otherwise. I'll put my own warning in as well.>, he continued.

Sitara pulled a face at that. Oh, she'd dealt with her share of lechers, all right, and they'd learned to back off or get their teeth busted. It still didn't mean she was thrilled at the idea of being stuck on a ship with one, in the middle of freakin' space.

"Great," she said with a roll of her eyes. "He a lizard person too? What is it with lizard people and their fuckin' attraction to us long-ears--uh, Feylini." She grimaced, accidentally calling herself by the Rividean nickname for her people. Which she had started to do ironically, and which had been a big mistake because it had started to become sincere.

<Human, by all accounts. Sarah's only contact with her own kind has been in the form the others the slavers who stole her from a ship's hatchery raised with her. Strange, considering her hatred of humans, but she probably sees something different in him. Probably helps that he doesn't try to cheat her, and seems to be content to leave her to her passion.>, Rhevi responded, <As to what the Rivideans see in your kind, I can't really answer that. I'll admit humanoids have a certain functional beauty to them, and the intelligent ones can be charming, but, really, I fail to see what's so attractive about them. Then again, your species and mine aren't really compatible in that way, so there's that. As for Sarah, well, I don't think she's ever been attracted to anyone.>

Sitara cocked her head curiously, brow scrunching up. So the lizard woman's employer was...human? There was something kind of comforting in that, because if she was employed by a human, that meant she hadn't eaten him, and if she hadn't eaten a human--when human was on the menu for her--then it surely meant she was less likely to eat her. Maybe Sitara's logic was a little weird, but it made sense to her! She relaxed, just a little, her shoulders not quite so hitched up around her ears.

Maybe...maybe this wasn't such a raw deal after all.

Except for the part where she still had to go back to Jeth.

As much as she wanted to help her friends, if she could, goddammit she was terrified of the idea. Gods, she was a coward.

"Well, huh. That makes the both of us, then," Sitara said, and flopped back against the couch cushions. Really, she'd been so focused on not dying that she'd never really thought about whether or not she had pantsfeelings for anyone. Not dying was still number one on her priority list. Probably would be for a long, long time.

"So, okay, another question. Why me? Like...why'd you chose me? Like was I just lucky, like was it random and it could have been anyone? Or was there like a reason?

Rhevi noted the Feylini's more relaxed posture with limited optimism. The true test still lay ahead, but, for the moment, it was reassuring to see that she was, indeed, able to be reasoned into calm in otherwise frightening scenarios.  <You, specifically? You were lucky. However, my sister did ask that her intermediary look for Feylini with skills that would be useful for a guide, as well as survival and possibly combat skills. Ideally, a member of the resistance, but there was really no way to determine that without endangering lives and tipping my sister's hand, so that was up to chance.>, he answered, <In short, you, as I understand, were the only one readily available with the right skills. As it was, I'm told a rival or two had to be encouraged to look elsewhere, though that could also have been the intermediary looking to increase his finder's fee.>, he continued. <I wouldn't dwell on it too long. Survivor's guilt can devour you from within if you're not careful. Best to keep moving forward and do what you can for your friends.>, Rhevi added, the last sentence carrying a slight note of sadness in his 'tone' as he remembered buddies who'd died over the centuries in battles he himself had sometimes been one wrong step, a few centimeters, or one second slower/faster from dying in.

Sitara couldn't quite repress the shudder that went through her at his words. So there'd been others interested in buying her? She could only imagine they were other Rivideans. To think she had been that close from an entirely different fate was...unnerving, to say the least.

And even as she thought that, another pang of guilt struck her, making her insides twist sickeningly. It felt wrong to feel so relieved, so happy to have been saved, when her friends could be dying or worse as she spoke. She didn't deserve this any more than they did--less, actually! Jyoti was so kind and sweet, and Frey was so brave, and and and...

She snapped out of her thoughts when he spoke of survivor's guilt, and had to bark a dry laugh at that. Wow. Read her like a book.

"Yeah, easier said than done," she muttered, tugging at an ear. "I couldn't do shit. Sarah's gonna be really disappointed, I'm not a fighter, I'm a runner, I couldn't help anyone. They came for us and I just...I ran. Got caught anyway, hah."

It wasn't entirely true. She'd run, true, after she'd run out of bullets and they just kept coming. She hadn't stopped to try to help any of the others grabbed; she knew she couldn't help them at that point. So she'd run, and she hadn't gotten very far, and they'd taken her kicking and biting and screaming.

Her shoulders slumped. "What happens if I fail?"

Rhevi nodded slightly, lower jaw plate sliding down slightly. <Says the Feylini who came in here pretty much kicking and screaming, determined to fight me tooth and nail.>, he remarked with a slightly amused 'tone', <Granted, a lot of that was meant to distract me, and possibly yourself, from your fear, but there are many who, in your situation, would have been frozen with fear, too afraid to so much as speak out of turn. I highly doubt your first reaction was to run. Even now, you cooperate out of practicality, rather than meekness or desire.>, he continued, his 'tone' more reassuring.

<I've seen a lot of slaves in my time. By human reckoning, I'm just over a millennium and a half old. I've seen everything from mindless beasts like the valari hesta, barely fit to serve, to willful beings that, in a fair universe, would never know the bonds of slavery. If there's a personality type I've never seen, it doesn't exist in any known part of the universe.>, Rhevi explained, <Unless I'm slipping in my age, you are not the type to simply turn tail at the first hint of trouble, pardon the expression. That's just the guilt talking.>

<You won't.>, Rhevi stated, <You might stumble, but you have the skills. It's your confidence that needs work.>

"Whoa, shit, did you just psychoanalyze me? Are you psychoanalyzing me?" Sitara said, staring at him. Because, uh, he had hit the nail on the head in an unnerving way, summed her up better than she could sum up herself. The acting likea fierce big shot to hide her fear and distract her captor, yeah, that resonated with her, though she would never admut it. "'Cause I'll have you know I--wait. Millenium? You're a fucking MILLENIUM old?"

She sputtered in surprise, nearly choking on her own words, and felt...suddenly rather like a baby in his presence. She'd really started to feel all adult and shit at eighteen. Now she felt like a child.

"Uhhhh...whoa. Um. Wow, that's...huh." She cleared her throat, bouncing her leg anxiously still, feeling a little awkward. Probably like an ant in the face of a god. Or something like that.

But she did have another question still.

She shook her head, shaking away the shock, and cleared her throat again. "Um...so...what the hell. Why are you being all NICE and stuff? Like with the advice and shit? Like...aren't you a slaver or something? Like that's your slave over there right?"

<You don't get to be my age as a soldier of a race actively at war without having at least a little skill in reading people. Granted, being able to sense your body temperature helps. >, Rhevi explained, <And, yes. 1,522 human years old, to be precise. Sarah's 516, though she acts much younger sometimes. As far as Hestari go, though, I'm about what you'd be at 50 or 60. Granted, I'm in excellent health, and probably won't retire for another six or seven centuries yet, but you get the picture.  My eldest sister, Kelly, was around 2400 when she died.>, he continued, tempted to add a crack about him truly being ancient.

<Believe it or not, not all slavers are inherently cruel. Many take it as their duty to care for what they consider to be 'lesser races', and genuinely do care about their well being, even if they go about preserving it in the wrong way. As for my slave, she's a Sevarik. Her species are subservient and lack any will other than to serve their masters by design. They were originally much like the insects found on human worlds known as bees, with the Sevarik-Hesta serving as their queens. Thousands of years before even I was born, their subspecies was altered to be able to have their masters imprinted on them as their new 'queens'. It's, in my opinion, a very dark period of Hestari history best remembered for the lessons it teaches and little else.>, he explained, <As for me, any being desiring freedom and willing to work for it is, to me, not meant to be enslaved. As a ranking officer, I'm not as free as Ranah and Kelly to act on that belief, but I'm willing to help where I can, and I don't really see any point in mistreating slaves, anyway. If they do good work, they should be rewarded, not beaten or raped for amusement. Speaking of the latter, that's another thing I'll never fully understand. All raping a slave says to me is that the rapist is too cowardly and too weak to find a proper mate or assert dominance in a proper manner.>

Oh man, he could read her body temperature? What about her heartbeat? No wonder he could read her like a book. Hard to hide much when your body was betraying you--and when you were in the presence of a strange creature who had done it all and talked about centuries like they were years.

Kind of intimidating!

She shrugged her shoulders uncomfortably, shifting where she sat. "The Rivideans don't even give a fuck about being seen as weak or whatever, they don't care. They see us the same way some folks see cattle--creatures of convenience, there to be used for whatever they fucking want. Which is, y'know, fucking or killing, which is about all those bastards know how to do."

She shuddered. She'd seen the aftermath of what they could do to a person, and the memory made her blanch, made her breathing quicken. Made her feel like prey, reminded her of how vulnerable she still was and would be when she went back--and how selfish she was, thinking that when her friends were gone, when they were going through hell. She shook her head, hands clenching, and closed her eyes tight.

"Look, I...I don't really wanna talk about that. About what they do. I just...this whole thing is fucked up." And she was trying really, really hard not to freak out here. Gods she didn't want to go back.

<Yes. Enough on that subject.>, Rhevi stated, his 'tone' angry. Were it not for the situation with the Ulthane and the recent tensions with the Maraki, both enough to sideline the Alliance as far as concerns went, Rhevi was almost certain the Rivideans would be being put in their place. Races such as theirs were rarely tolerated by the Hestari, as their ilk tended to cause other races to be less willing to associate with the Hestari, and had, in the past, even driven worlds to ally with their enemies. As the Feylini closed her eyes, the temperature of her face fell from the blood draining in fear, and her breathing began to quicken, Rhevi resisted the urge to put a hand on her shoulder, knowing that being touched by an alien hand at that moment would make her fear even worse.

<Do you have any other questions?>, he asked, <Once we surface and make the transfer, there won't be any other opportunities to ask for a while.>

Did she have more questions? Honestly, she probably had a million--and she'd probably think of a million more when it was too late. But this was frankly overwhelming and confusing and it was hard to think of any good ones when she was put on the spot like this and stressing herself ill. They were on a time limit here. No pressure! Ask them all now or forever hold your peace!

But she did have at least one more. The most important one, as far as she was concerned.

She bit her lip, chewing it worriedly for a moment, before she looked up again. It was still so weird, looking at him. His mandibles alone would probably never stop being creepy, and she felt a little bad thinking it, since he had turned out to be...actually surprisingly decent, despite the rough start.

"Do you...do you think I could negotiate a deal with Sarah? Maybe?" she said, sitting up a little straighter. "That if I agree to do this--" Not that she had a choice! "--we find my friends first?"

<Whether you could or not is irrelevant. I have the authority to add to your contract, and can put it in as one of the terms, if you'd like. For what it's worth, though, I doubt she'd refuse. Especially if they have useful skills.>, Rhevi answered, pulling up the contract from the card in one of the slots of his wrist terminal, <Just remember, if and when you find them, if you intend to rescue them, they'll need somewhere to go, even if it's with you. That means resources, a place to hide, food and drinkable water, weapons to defend themselves with, medical supplies and those with the skills to use them, and other considerations.>, he added as a reminder, <I'm not trying to discourage you. Just make sure you have plans in place before you go looking for them, and make sure to have multiple backup plans. In any situation, combat in particular, the plan is often the first casualty, and having something to fall back on could mean the difference in your rescue being a long-term success or a long-term failure.>, he continued.

"Finding them is priority one, everything else is secondary," Sitara said firmly, looking up at him. "Every second wasted is a second too late. Food, water, shelter, whatever, we can figure that out later, but we can't do jack shit for them if they're already dead 'cause we were trying to figure out how to feed 'em. Starving free is way fucking better than starving under THEIR care."

She gave her ears another nervous tug. "I just...at the very least I wanna check on 'em. Know they're...okay. I'm not saying we should be idiots about this but if we're gonna do this, we gotta do this like NOW 'cause they're fucking dying while we speak and--!"

She stopped, took a deep breath, and rested her fists on her knees. "Do YOU got any bright ideas?"

Rhevi shook his head as he listened. <Letting your emotions dictate your plans is the surest way to get one or more of your friends killed. You as well, and then there's no telling when your other friends will be rescued. You also fail to consider that, without making sure you've at least got somewhere secure with room enough to take them, they may end up right back in Rividean hands, and you along with them, and the Rivideans, if they've even an inkling of intelligence, will move you all elsewhere. Somewhere Sarah won't have someone with tracking skills specific to your world to help her find and scout. No sense keeping slaves in a camp that has already been raided once.>, he pointed out when she'd finished speaking, adding in a clause that Sarah was to help her rescue her friends as he spoke. <Not only that, but, when you let your enemies dictate your timetable, it's that much easier to back yourself into a corner and be forced to tip your hand much sooner than you want to, and make it all the harder to get rid of them. They'll be on their guard at other places, and may even be able to figure out what they face. Every choice, every non-choice, has consequences, and rebellion and war are rarely forgiving in that department. I understand the urgency fully, but, to be blunt, dead is dead, and you help no one by trying to rush things.>

<Ideas? Hmmm... Keep in mind I say this with only secondhand knowledge of Jeth and the situation there, so take this as a starting point, not an end-all be-all. First step is to find allies. Having allies means having access to whatever supplies, information, weapons, and shelter they can spare. It also means more manpower, and possibly skills you and Sarah don't have. For instance, someone's going to have to learn to read and speak Rividean, assuming they don't speak and write a similar language to common, and Sarah is completely illiterate in any language other than a few Hestari written languages and a couple Draconian written languages. I understand there is a resistance in place? My first move would be to try to establish contact with them. With luck, as hesitant as I am to rely on it, they may know where your friends are being held, which will save you the trouble of tracking them down. Even if they don't, they should at least know where some of the camps are. If the Rivideans organise their camps anything like the Hestari do, hitting the camps could lead you to others. Slaves on Hesta are usually moved to where their skills are most valuable soon after processing. Even if that isn't the specific way the Rivideans do it, they ought to keep logs of who they sell to and where they move any they can use for more than just food and torture. What order you hit them in, if you have to go that route, is up to your judgement. If you know how long it's been since they were captured and can find out what type of vehicles they use to move slaves around, you can figure out how far they could have been taken in the time that's passed, which may narrow down the list considerably. One of the main problems you'll face finding them is that you can't just put up wanted posters and ask everyone you meet if they've seen them. Even on Hesta, slaves aren't encouraged to go asking after family or poking around for information, and nothing's more out of place than a slave tying to find out where other camps are. Discretion is the better part of valor here, and you'll do your friends no good if you end up caught in a trap.>, Rhevi answered, scratching his lower jaw thoughtfully.

<Use Sarah for recon as much as she'll let you. As you'll soon find out, she's quite suited to it. And try to get her to take at least a few ranking slavers alive, for interrogation. Use my name if you need to. As for your role, when not directly helping Sarah, I would suggest you being the intermediary with any Feylini groups, and Sarah be the face of your group when dealing with Rividean sympathisers. As you yourself can attest, other Feylini will be understandably reluctant to trust her, and fear a trap, and you would do well to be wary of any Rivideans offering aid, and not take the risk of meeting them face-to-face until they can be properly vetted. Working quickly is a necessity here, but you need to be cautious, too. When on a hunt, following too quickly can destroy the very tracks you seek.

Once you find your friends, determine if they can be moved, and spend at least a day observing the patterns of the guards, if feasible, paying special attention to shift changes, patrol routes, check-in times, bad habits, even meals and how often and for how long they relieve themselves. It will be painful to wait, but knowing where and when you are most likely to encounter resistance will better prepare you to overcome or avoid it, and could mean the difference between life and death for any friends who are too injured or too sick to move quickly. Even if they are in perfect health, not studying the guards is an excellent way to get ambushed, so don't go in right away unless you absolutely must, and be ready to face stiff opposition if you do. Either way, you'll have to make the call when you get to that point. As I said before, I'm working off of much less information than I'd normally make sure to have.>, he continued.

<One more thing: Keep them simple. the fewer the steps and the fewer the number of things left to chance or requiring things to be just so, the less likely the plan is to fall apart, but always be prepared for the Lieutenant to spill his breakfast. Ask Sarah how that one came about, if you're curious, but it's basically a catch-all for those little things that no one sees coming that can completely shatter any plan.>

Ask and you shall receive, it seemed! Sitara listened to it all without interrupting, her floppy ears lifted as high as she could get them as though that would better help her retain that outpouring of information.

It was...a lot to take in.

And a lot to remember.

She really wished she had something to take notes! But when he spelled it out like that, she could see how her impatience was dangerous, and how, well, maybe he was right. She would have to take it slow. Even though she really, really didn't want to, even though she felt that each extra minute of planning was an extra minute where someone might die or be maimed beyond saving.

When he was done, Sitara was quiet for a long moment as she let it all sink in--and hopefully stay there. Her hands curled against her knees, eyes closed as though that would help her memorize everything, and finally she let out a breath and looked back up at her...crabby companion, who had, indeed, turned out not so bad after all.

In fact, shit...now she didn't really want to leave him.

"You sure you can't come with us?" she said after a long pause, looking up at him hopefully. "I mean, ya like...you know all this shit, you seem to have a handle on it, so like...why don'tcha help us kick ass and stuff, yeah?"

<I'd love to, personally. The Rivideans should not be permitted to carry on as they do, and there are few in the higher packs who would not take the first opportunity to put them in their place.>, Rhevi answered, choosing his words carefully, <But I have other pressing matters to attend to. There are...>, Rhevi continued, pausing to find the best way to indicate there were other, more pressing threats without giving away classified information, <...situations that require my immediate attention. Opening a new front would be... detrimental to handling those situations. Therefore, it cannot appear as though any Hestari are involved in the freeing of your world. Not until the other situations are resolved. Also, as a military officer, I have my orders.>. As he spoke of his orders, Rhevi's hands edged toward his back. He'd been briefed on the Ulthane abominations, and to say he did not look forward to facing them was an understatement. Personally, he would have been happy to go to Jeth if it meant not having to send troops to die in the hopes of pushing back an enemy uniquely suited to countering the main advantages of Hestari naval strategy, but orders were orders, and him not getting the short straw, as the human expression went, would have meant someone else would. The only consolation was that he would be on a command ship, but even those had been breached, infected, and converted before. <To be perfectly honest, you will be far safer where you're going than I will be where I'm going. You don't want to know what I'll be up against.>

"Fleet Hunter. We've arrived at the surface point. Nahlirha probes have been deployed, report negative contacts. Time is T-10 minutes to rendezvous, assuming the recipient is on time.", a voice, the digitized copy of the XO's telepathic 'voice', reported from Rhevi's wrist terminal, speaking in the Hestari Northern Sea dialect.

<Remain submerged until the recipient's ship arrives, then surface parallel 50 meters starboard mirror, request docking, and roll ship 90 degrees to port. ETA T-20 SHM. Repeat common.>, Rhevi ordered, holding up his hand for Sitara to wait.

"Remain submerged until the recipient's ship arrives, then surface parallel to, 50 meters starboard of, and oriented bow forward relative to recipient, request docking, and roll ship 90 degrees to port. Estimated time of arrival is T minus 20 Human Standard Minutes. Aye, Fleet Hunter.", the XO repeated, understanding full well the information was for the Feylini's benefit as well as to confirm his orders.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two small ripples, like tiny splashes in the vastness of space, spread to just under a meter diameter before shrimp-shaped probes burst forth, the rifts closing in a fashion that looked like the splash of objects jumping out of water. As the Valari Hesta scout ship waited for the Sassy Juice to arrive, the probes continuously scanned the area and sent the data to their parent ship.

"Uhm..." Sitara stared blankly at Rhevi, because she didn't understand a word that disembodied voice from his wrist terminal said. It was a lot of jargon, a lot of official speak that sounded really important and like it was meant to mean something--important enough he had made sure it spoke in her language so she could understand! Unfortunately, though she recognized the words individually, she didn't understand what they meant collectively.

So she just wound up staring at Rhevi with huge, wide, blank eyes.

"Uh...yes? Sounds good?" she said weakly, with a smile and a little laugh.

She didn't want to admit she didn't understand and look stupid.

It was around that time that, like clockwork, the Sassy Juice pulled into view, and Ari couldn't help but let out a whistle at the sight of that ship.

Massive, would be putting it mildly.

In any case, it was showtime, and time to find out whatever the hell it was he was picking up. Maybe he should have asked Sarah for deets earlier, but it had sounded like their window was tiny and urgent--and besides, knowing Sarah, it was some sweet new technology. Of course he'd leaped onto the chance to pick up whatever her buddies were dropping off.

With a flip of a switch, he turned on his comlink. "Valari Hesta, this is Captain Maxwell of the Sassy Juice. Do ya read me? Over."

<We're at the spot we're going to be at for the meeting, but we're not going to go back into realspace until the ship we're meeting shows up. It's a measure to lessen the chances of being found by any unwanted third parties by spending as little time in realspace as possible.>, Rhevi explained in response to Sitara's confusion, <We're going to enter realspace 50 meters to the right of the ship we're meeting, facing the same direction, ask them to dock with us, and then flip the ship lengthwise to the left so that our upper docking port is facing them. We're meeting them in about twenty of your minutes.>, he continued, <Port and starboard are left and right, respectively, and Human Standard is the term we use for time based on the orbital and rotational period of the human homeworlds. Hesta has a longer orbital and rotational period, so our timekeeping is different in relation to most species.  The habitable zone of our home star is further out than most, and our homeworld spins more slowly.>.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Captain Maxwell, Schoolmaster Vahri Sehnah, acting XO.  Reading you five.", Schoolmaster Sehnah answered, the comms sending a digitized copy of his 'voice' through the audio line, "Please initiate docking with our upper docking port. I say again, please initiate docking with our upper docking port. How copy, over?", he continued, signalling for the helmsman to begin rolling the ship to port.

As the ship was rotating, Rhevi saved the contract,  removed the card containing it and put it into a special case, which he then tuned to Sitara's collar. <Be very careful not to lose this. This file card has your contract, as well as several other important pieces of information my sister was not able to send Sarah over email. The case is keyed to your collar, so you'll need to keep it within two meters of you at all times.>, he explained, tapping a button on the case and letting go. as soon as his hands released the case, it floated over to Sitara, though it lacked any apparent means of propulsion. <The case will do what it can to ensure that, but vigilance on your part wouldn't be wasted. Also, wear this.>, Rhevi added, taking a small, red, wooden medallion with a faint, slightly earthen smell from a pouch around his torso, <Sarah will know what it is. She'll also smell it before she sees it, which will be more important for her captain than for you. Trust me when I say you won't have time to put it on at the last minute, so take it off as rarely as possible, preferably never.>. As he handed her the medallion, Rhevi sent a telepathic command to his wrist terminal to disable the perimeter monitoring of the collar, allowing Sitara to go anywhere she wanted as long as she was within 2 meters of the card case.

"Initiate dockin' with your upper dockin' port, roger that. Over!" Ari confirmed, and as the Velari Hesta began to initiate boarding procedures, Ari nudged the Sassy Juice on in. He set it to autopilot and let it take over from there, then spun in his chair to face his terminal and send off a quick email.

Yo, Sarah, I'm rendevousing with your guy, about to pick up your shit. You owe me, missy. ;)

xoxo Ari

Meanwhile, to say Sitara was overwhelmed was an understatement. Crab-face had briefed her pretty good, but now that everything was springing into motion, she found she wasn't ready! Her heart thumped wildly as she slipped the medallion over her head, and clung to the case, not understanding what any of it was or what any of it meant, except that it was apparently important. So important she couldn't let it out of her sight! She tucked the medallion under her shirt and hugged the case to her chest.

"What...what is it? The medallion? The case?" she said quickly, though now that time was running out, of course she had even more questions! How he'd floated the case was among them, but now she had to prioritize, and she was starting to grow panicky as she felt herself being rushed.

Oh man oh man oh man she didn't wanna go yet, she didn't wanna do this, she didn't wanna go on some crazy mission with a Rividean looking chick and a pervy dude!

"W-what happens if I lose it or it breaks or it gets stolen or something?!"

<The case is a filecard carrier. It's basically a briefcase for data cards. It will follow you as long as you're wearing that collar.>, Rhevi explained as he motioned for her to follow and headed for the docking port, <Unless you or someone else puts in a lot of effort to destroy it, it's not going to break. It's designed to survive a ship up to heavy frigate weight hitting the surface of a world at terminal velocity, and its designer made sure it would need as little maintenance as possible. It's next service date is well beyond your natural lifespan.>, he continued.

<As for the medallion, it's made from the wood of a tree native to Hesta. Sarah will know the scent, and will know whose it is. As for what happens if the case is lost or stolen... You were briefed on that before you came aboard. Captain Maxwell will work out that letting the latter happen would be suicide, and, so long as you aren't trying to lose it, the former isn't going to happen.>.

"Captain Maxwell, Schoolmaster Sehnah. Docking is now complete. Our instruments read all seals good. Permission for the Fleet Hunter and cargo to come aboard, over?", the XO sent as the docking completed without a hitch and the docking port sealed tot he Sassy Juice's. As he waited for a reply, Rhevi stood at the docking port, performing his own visual inspection as he waited for the all-clear to board the Sassy Juice. Now came the possible hard part. How would Maxwell react to learning what he was picking up, and what would he need to convince him that Sarah would understand.

After a pause, reassured that the case was nigh indestructable, Sitara let the case go--and gasped lightly as, indeed, it floated along after her. That was...that was so weird! But also so cool! If there were more time, she would have loved to hear an explanation, but they were already approaching the docking port--

And she was pretty well out of time.

Heart in her throat, she sucked in a deep breath. "Thank you," she said quietly, looking up at Rhevi before turning her eyes back to the door. "For, uh...for saving me and stuff."

"Permission granted, come on aboard, over," Ari said as he rose from his chair with a stretch and finished the last swig of his instant coffee. He'd had the decency to put on a pair of cargo pants and NOT greet them in his boxers, but he didn't bother with a shirt. His ship was a shirt-free zone, after all, professionalism be damned.

He doubted Sarah's fish friends would mind.

He headed for the docking port, arriving just as the door slid open with the hiss of released air pressure.

Sarah had just locked in the coordinates for the final warp when the HUD of her fighter alerted her to the new message. <What guy?>, she asked herself after reading the message, wondering if she'd ordered something and somehow forgot. It wasn't until several moments of mentally going over the last few days that it dawned on her that Ranah's email had had a post-script that she hadn't read. As soon as she rectified the mistake, Sarah sent back a reply.

Quote
No sex. Other than that, name it. And tell Rhevi to tell Ranah to put things like that in the main body next time. I wouldn't have even seen the post script if you hadn't sent a message. Coordinates for Jeth are in the attachment, stand by two days for LZ coords.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"XO Sehnah. Permission received. Valari Hesta out.", the XO replied, sending a text to Rhevi advising him of Ari's granting permission to board.

<I'll pass your thanks along to Ranah. It was her idea. I'm just happy to do what I can to help.>, Rhevi answered as an automated voice announced Rhevi's departure and XO Sehnah's resuming command pending Rhevi's return in Hestari. As the hatch slid open, Rhevi bared his lower teeth in a grin. <Expecting to catch some sun, Captain?>, Rhevi said, his 'tone' jovial, <Fleet Hunter Rhevi Varrah. I see you're every bit as unprofessional as I was lead to believe.>, he said as he detached the touchscreen from his wrist terminal and offered it to Ari, <Need your signature here saying you accept responsibility for the delivery from this point on. Sarah will tell you where to meet her, once she knows to expect me, but my guess is she didn't read the email all the way through before tearing off.>, he continued, <Do you have any questions?>.

Ari may have been more shocked to meet Rhevi, if he hadn't met his share of interesting alien races in his (comparatively) short life. But for him, it was just another day on the job, and Rhevi's appearance illicited no more surprise than raised eyebrows and a curious, interested once over. Couldn't help it if he was a bit of a xenophile!

The little bunny-looking companion near him, though? Well, she was sure easier on the eyes. She saw him looking at her, though, and quickly scooted behind Rhevi, glaring at him.

What the fuck?

Whatever.

Ari beamed up at Rhevi and gave a casual shrug. "Gotta be comfy in my own home, eh?" he said as he took the touchscreen and swiped his finger over the screen, messily signing. "Besides, I don't work out not to show these abs off. Can't say ya don't like what ya see."

With a saucy wink at Rhevi, he passed the screen back to him and checked his wrist terminal when it blipped. "By the way, Sarah says somethin' 'bout puttin' important shit in the main body of emails, aaand..."

He looked around, brow furrowed, as though realizing only then that there were no packages, no boxes. Just Rhevi standing there.

...and the girl.

Uh.

"So, uh...where's this package I'm pickin' up?" And had signed for.

<Perhaps. Though I can't say that I do like what I see, either. At least in the way you're trying to imply. You're human and I'm not, after all.>, Rhevi replied, his 'tone' still jovial, but with a slight note of warning, <And I'll pass her message along, though she would do well to heed Ranah when she says to read the entire message before acting in the future.>, he continued, taking the touchscreen back and reattaching it to his wrist terminal.

Rhevi motioned for Sitara to stand front and center as he spoke, <Ranah arranged for a guide for Sarah. If she tore off without reading the post script, I have no doubt she neglected to close the message as well, and you don't strike me as the type not to get nosy. I'm sure you understand how the arrangement was made. Sitara will be that guide, and she will earn her freedom in the process, an arrangement Sarah will recognise, as learning and mastering her skills was how she earned hers.>, he explained, <Sitara also has a case of filecards with information Ranah was not able to include in her email>, Rhevi indicated the floating case, <It is to remain on or within two meters of her person at all times. You do not want you or your crew to be responsible for it going missing.>.

Shuffling front and center as directed, Sitara crossed her arms and hunched her shoulders, foot tapping rapidly as she continued to stare Ari down. Or rather, stare him up, since she had to crane her neck to look at him. She was a short person in a forest of giants!

"...So...what you're tellin' me is that little anklebiter's the special delivery?" Ari said at last, bringing a hand to his head and rubbing along his left temple. "Some little bunny girl? Now, don't get me wrong, I ain't sayin' she ain't cute. Like, 10/10, would bang, never gonna complain about a cute chick hand delivered to my ship. But shit, I rushed all this way, ya made it sound like fuckin' life or death--"

"It is life or death, and if you lay a hand on me you'll find that out personally!" Sitara growled, bristling.

Ari held up his hands. "Whoa there, darlin'. Easy does it. But seriously, uh...when was someone gonna tell me I was shippin' slaves?"
Title: Re: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]

<One slave. And the reason the timing is so tight is because I do need to be elsewhere soon, and that elsewhere is life and death, and the sooner she gets to Jeth, the sooner she can help her friends and her people. As for when you were to be told, that was an oversight on my part. I apologise.>, Rhevi answered, <I should have made sure you knew. By doing this, you will be helping more than just her.>

Privately, to Ari, he added, <And, once her mission is done, perhaps you might be able to broker a deal regarding those mines. You are her only transportation to Jeth, after all. A man could stand to get mighty rich on the right person's gratitude, and you get to help free a slave in the bargain.>.

"Pffft. Whatever, s'long as I get paid in the long run," Ari said with a dismissive wave of his hand, wanting to get off that particular subject fast. The topic of slavery was always an awkward one--and he didn't like Rhevi's subtle prodding, because it was hitting a little too close, and giving him the uncomfortable impression the bastard knew more than he let on. Why would your average pirate care one way or the other about liberating slaves, after all?

Maybe that was his own paranoia speaking on the matter, but dammit, there were some things he just didn't want getting out. Especially not among his crew.

That didn't mean he wasn't totally going to take the guy's advice, though.

Letting out a low sigh, Ari leaned his shoulder against the wall. "So, this is Sarah's crazy scheme, yeah? Did she ever happen to mention where, exactly, all these freed people are gonna go? I obviously ain't got space."
Title: Re: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]

The pirate's discomfort, while hidden from human senses, did not quite go unnoticed by Rhevi, and the Hestari's antennae perked slightly as he found himself wondering if he'd just hit upon something with his prodding. With over a third of his life spent in a sometimes-cold, sometimes-heated war with the Union/Alliance, it was difficult for Rhevi not to try to look for leverage when dealing with humans, and he filed away the suspicion accordingly.

<Actually, my sister came up with it. Sarah's just the one executing it. As for where they'll go, the idea is they're going nowhere. Jeth is their home, after all. It's the ones enslaving them that will be leaving. Or dying.>, Rhevi answered, <The idea is to do enough damage that the Feylini can take their world back. Your involvement will be as brief or as great as you choose, after dropping Sitara off.>. For now, Rhevi kept the fact that he'd given Sitara the medallion to himself. If the pirate needed assurance he wasn't about to strike a hornet's nest, he would reveal it, but he saw no use in telling him about it if he didn't need to. The fewer who knew, the fewer to think it valuable and possibly ruin the message her having it was meant to convey.

"Huh," Ari said, a non-committal sound. Go against a race tough enough to enslave an entire planet? No thanks. The folks he'd dealt with didn't even work on THAT huge of a scale.

"Sounds like suicide, but far be it for me to hold anyone back if they really wanna jump."

<Sarah's done similar before. It was on a smaller scale, but she also didn't have the knowledge and skills she has now.>, Rhevi remarked, <She knows what she's doing and how to do it. If you have no further questions, Captain Maxwell, I'll be taking my leave. Sitara, remember what I told you, and good hunting. If, for whatever reason, you end up in Sarah's quarters, I'd recommend taking a careful look around. Sarah's constantly tinkering with things and testing new inventions. You may find something of use.>.

Oh gods, he was leaving. And though Sitara had regarded Rhevi with panic before, he had quickly become an oddly stable presence in all the crazy. At the very least, he seemed a decent person, and he had become familiar. Now she was being thrown into an unfamiliar situation all over again, whisked away onto a strange new ship by a strange human that was filling her with new, fresh waves of panic.

She really wanted to ask him not to go. But pride made her bite her tongue. She wasn't about to plead.

"Okay, got it," she said instead, proud her voice was steadier than she felt. "Just, uh...I guess I'll see you around? Eventually?"

With a shrug, still skeptical, Ari gave Rhevi a little wave of his hand. "No further questions, and thanks for the free babe delivery!"

<Hanarik willing, Sitara. And I'd be careful, Captain Maxwell. If you thought Sarah was against your advances...>, Rhevi said as he headed for the hatch. Only to trail off, coming to a full stop as he sensed it.

Human warp gates were known among Hestari for one property in particular. When one opened, it created an electrical field that increased in size and strength exponentially to the size of the ship passing through it. This field ranged from barely perceptible in the case of a corvette or frigate, to large enough to cause arcing on the exterior of ships and, due to the spatial properties of the gate, mild discharges inside small ships in the vicinity for heavy cruisers and dreadnaughts. Experienced Hestari naval officers could often identify the class and number of Union or Alliance vessels before their ships, a useful skill in countering ambushes.

And this one was huge. Larger even than his own Teshari. Its size, for a human ship, would easily put it in the heavy cruiser or even dreadnaught size, though it would be somewhere in the middle range of Draconian cruiser-weights.

<Captain Maxwell, check your scanners. I know what you'll see, but I hope I'm wrong.>, Rhevi stated, a slight note of tension in his 'voice'.

No sooner had he spoken than the ring of light appeared, nearly 110 kilometers in diameter, then filled in to form a circle with sunlike brightness, its light so intense that the small squadron of fighters that issued forth from it was almost invisible against it.

"Fleet hunter... We have incoming. Warp gate size suggests... Talsak... It's the Alliance newtype. I say again, With Joined Hands is incoming. Fleet Hunter-", the digitized voice spoke from Rhevi's wrist terminal in Hestari.

<Disengage docking. Immediate dive! Rendezvous with Battlegroup Teshari and inform them of the situation. I'll find my own way back. You have your orders. Do not, I say again, DO NOT read back. Execute immediately!>, Rhevi commanded privately. <Captain Maxwell, get us out of here.>

As the Valari Hesta-class scout ship began emergency separation procedures, a massive warship emerged from the gate, which closed behind it, firing a small shot from one of its massive mass accelerators at the Hestari vessel with almost surgical precision, targeting the top of the vessel in such a way as to avoid damaging the Sassy Juice.

Whatever snappy, witty thing Ari had been about to say in response to the guy's quip about Sarah was soon lost by his following "words". His grin faded, and with a start he checked the small terminal on his wrist, tapping a few buttons on the touchscreen. It was linked to the systems on his ship, and a quick scan showed...

Motherfucker.

That was a big-ass ship.

There was a flurry of language coming from the crab guy's terminal, words he couldn't understand, but he could understand the urgency. And when Rhevi told him to get them out of dodge...

Yeah, he didn't need to be told twice.

"You owe me one HELL of an explanation later," he shot at Rhevi before he turned and bolted down the hall, staggering when the ship shuddered. Shit, shit! For a second he thought they'd been hit, but no sensors were blaring. Rhevi's ship, then? They were still attached. "Get yourselves secure! We're bailin'!"

As he made his way to the cockpit, Sitara flashed Rhevi with a worried look, her eyes wide. "What's going on?"
Title: Re: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]
Post by: GIR on October 14, 2016, 10:55:11 pm
<Hanarik willing, we'll live long enough for you to get it. Don't fire on those fighters unless they shoot first. My ship's their main concern. As long as you don't engage, they should have no reason to suspect I'm aboard. Pirates in our galaxy don't typically stick around when human and Hestari ships meet.>, Rhevi advised, <Their main goal right now will be to destroy the Valari Hesta scout ship, then scoop up the survivors for interrogation. Best for us to be long gone before they realise I was ever aboard. Even with the upgrades Sarah has no doubt made, your ship wouldn't be able to survive their full attention.>.

As the Valari Hesta scout ship separated from the Sassy Juice, another shot, this one slightly larger, was fired by With Joined Hands, aimed for where the top of the scout ship would be, followed roughly three seconds later by one roughly the width of the Hestari vessel aimed at where the ship's thrust, as well as the momentum added by the 2nd shot's impact, would put it in the time it would take the shot to close the distance, the velocity of the round high enough to ensure that the target would be shattered, but low enough to still allow the remains and any survivors to be recovered efficiently.

<Short version: My race is in a hot-and-cold war with the humans of our galaxy. Their allies have been attempting to establish a colony in this system of this galaxy, as has my race. A new ship of theirs must have been on patrol, and has decided now would be a good time to crack open the Hestari ship they found and find out what we're doing setting up a colony so close to their allies' fledgling colony.>, Rhevi answered Sitara somewhat distractedly as he monitored the situation on a large 3-dimensional hologram of the battle his wrist terminal, which was monitoring the scout ship's sensors via a subspace connection that wouldn't show up on enemy sensors, had begun projecting at a telepathic command from him. As two dotted lines, one three seconds after the other, showed the projected path of each shot as it was fired, the ripples of the splash drive rift began to display in front of the scout ship, with the rift barely opening before the kill shot struck the scout ship just aft of its middle, the hologram switching to Hestari glyphs reading 'Signal Lost' in the Northern Sea dialect just as the front third entered the rift in pieces, with multiple voices crying out in pain issuing from Rhevi's wrist terminal, silenced by the loss of the feed as the message appeared. <They have their orders and their training. Teshari look after them.>, he prayed as he switched the wrist terminal off, <I'll need to discuss where to drop me off with Captain Maxwell as soon as we've gotten to a safe distance. For now, though, it looks like I'll be staying somewhat longer than planned.>.

The Sassy Juice trembled as it disconnected from the Valari Hesta ship, and there came the faint rumble and vibration of its powerful engines as Ari wasted no time in getting them the hell out of dodge.

Heart pounding, Sitara stared at Rhevi and his hologram as he spoke, noting the enemy seemed only interested in his ship, and not theirs. Which was good, sure, in a selfish way, but...

But had they just all been killed?

Was that what she had just witnessed?

She hardly heard Rhevi's words in her distraction. Had she just witnessed all those creatures...die?

Sitara was no stranger to death. She'd seen people die before, seen cities crumble, seen even worse horrors on the slave block. But that didn't make that any less horrific.

"Are your...are your people gonna be okay...?" she asked, even though she was certain she knew the answer.

<The ones nearest the impact point are dead. By my estimate, almost a quarter of the crew would have died almost instantaneously, either due to hit by debris from the impact, or killed by concussive force. Another third would have been fatally wounded, and probably died in the time we've been speaking, by the shockwave from the impact passing through the water, the concussive force I just mentioned.>, Rhevi answered, <The rest would be in varying stages of shock and varying states of critical injury, possibly bleeding internally until their organs regenerate from the concussive wave, but still alive, for about the next four minutes, unless they are rescued before they suffocate. Those are the ones the enemy is after. They'll be recovered and sent to that ship's medbay to be immersed in whatever water the enemy can recover from the wreckage. From there, they'll be interrogated as soon as they're healthy, then, if those humans are true to form, they'll be ransomed to our military in exchange for whatever human prisoners we have on hand. There probably won't be enough survivors to ransom for anything else. Those that were in the pieces that made it through the gate are doomed, unless the captain of that ship ignored protocol and beelined it for our battlegroup.>, he continued, his 'tone' closer to that of a professional reciting facts from memory than of someone who had just watched the better part of a scout ship crew under his command die, though there was a note of sadness to it.

<Our ships' hulls are designed to redirect the forces of collisions around the exterior, which is why any at all are still alive, but a hard enough impact will still shatter them, and will still send a strong enough shockwave through the ship to do some damage to the crew, as you just saw, even with the dampening fields reducing kinetic energy transfer in the water.>, he explained, <Human kinetic weapons on a ship that size are more devastating than antimatter weapons. A projectile the size of that last shot fired at maximum velocity would shatter even most heavy cruisers and vaporise anything less. They are formidable weapons. This is another good lesson for you: Know when retreat is your best option. There will likely be times you will find yourself up against an enemy you cannot overpower. There is no shame in running from such enemies and regrouping elsewhere to come up with a plan.>.

<Captain, I would recommend the space station known as the Cancer. The Alliance generally doesn't bother with pirate stations unless said pirates give them a reason to. I can find my own way back to my unit from there.>, Rhevi recommended.

Sitara paled at his words, her hand fluttering up to her chest. She swallowed hard, stunned by how utterly calm he seemed. But then again, wasn't he important? High on their food chain? Maybe he was just putting on a brave face.

Or maybe she just couldn't read his face. She hadn't been around his species long enough to be able to intuit their body language, as it was so different from her peoples', and their faces didn't really seem to have the same capabilities for expression. Maybe he wasn't actually calm at all, and was deeply grieving, but she was just projecting her species onto his.

She bit her lip, shifting uncomfortably, and nodded at his advice.

"Er, I don't think I'll have any issues there," she said. "I know when I'm beat. I ain't so proud I wouldn't run." Her tail gave a small twitch, her frown twisting deeper, and she played with the end of one floppy ear. "Running's what keeps you alive. I only stand my ground and keep on fightin' when I know I can't run."

Over the intercom, Ari's voice rang out, "Yeah, yeah, I'm familiar with the Cancer. Intimately so. We'll be there in two shakes of a hooker's tits."

Sitara's eye twitched and her frown deepened, twisting into a scowl. "Lovely."

Internally, Rhevi was grieving. He'd known, of course, that there were risks. Some of the ballsier, and better armed, pirates weren't above preying on scout ships, and two of those pirates were known to be in-system. With the Draconians attempting to set up a colony, there would, of course, be an increase in patrols. Even the soldiers on board the ship knew the risks that came with the territory of a delivery of convenience. None of that made it any easier to lose that many, and centuries of wisdom made little difference, either. But officers, especially high-ranking ones, were expected to act a certain way. Grieving was for later, when he was alone. In front of others, nothing had changed except the plan. Same mission, different path, usual ocean. Rhevi's response to Sitara was to nod as he began working out the specifics of how he'd be getting back to the battlegroup, making note of her discomfort, but not acting on it at the moment.

<I'm going to guess that's fast. My species doesn't have those, nor do most mammal species have prominent enough ones to shake when they're not actively lactating.>, Rhevi remarked, <Your species, goats, and cows are quite unique in that regard. Are you familiar with Drake Morgan? Not the cheapest option, I'll admit, but I've dealt with him before, and he is known to my battlegroup.>, he continued, <Assuming he's still in-system, he would be my best option for returning to my battlegroup. They'll know him. As long as he's broadcasting the Black Flag, they won't attack him, and, as long as he doesn't do anything stupid, he stands to gain much from it. Where is Sarah's quarters, if I may?>.

"Oh, that dick," Ari said over the intercom, and if it was possible to verbally roll one's eyes, Ari did just that. "Yeah, I know the shitweed. Look, I'll getcha to the Cancer, and from there...you do you. As for Sarah's quarters, just down the hall. Tinker with her shit at your own risk, buddy."

Sitara gave an awkward glance from Rhevi to the speaker above, as though Ari could see her (which, actually, he could; there were cameras in all of the public spaces, but the speaker was not one of them!) and then scratched behind her ear again. She tapped her foot, much like a rabbit. "Erm...where should I...?"

"Ya could bunk with me, babe," came Ari's answer.

"Pass."

"Ouch, fiiine. There's an empty room across from Sarah's, but if ya ever change your mind, darlin'..."

"I won't."

<Fair enough.>, Rhevi answered, <As for any tinkering, I've known Sarah for around 200 of your years. I know better than to make unauthorised adjustments to anything Sarah's built.>, he continued as he headed down the passageway to Sarah's quarters.

The hold was in the sort of organized messy state Rhevi knew to expect from Sarah, though, unlike her quarters on Hesta, the floor was mostly clear of parts and debris, presumably to allow access to a cabinet that he assumed held any blueprints relevant to the ship's systems. As he expected, a terminal near what he supposed (judging by the concentration of clutter) was her workstation was unlocked and open to Ranah's email, the text rather conspicuously in Common, given that Sarah had never bothered to learn how to read or write in the language.

Above the workstation was a small heat lamp, though, knowing Sarah, its specs were likely closer to a much larger one, and, over a pile of red pseudo-foliage that was almost certainly a bed, such as Sarah generally slept on, there was a small cooler. A jar on the workstation held strips of what looked like jerked meat, most of which Rhevi was almost certain was human, and a minifridge, buried except for the door and the arc in which it opened in all manner of parts and half-finished devices, sat on the opposite side of the terminal. Several racks on the walls held a variety of tools and weapons, some of which would be easily usable to anyone trained to use pistols or blades, and in the far corner of the room sat what Rhevi assumed to be Sarah's latest project: a skeletal frame to what appeared to be a prototype for an android made to resemble its creator, complete with basic wiring and servos, presumably for balance and mobility testing.

<Seems our little Stuck Tooth hasn't changed much. Never would have thought she'd develop a maternal instinct, though.>, Rhevi remarked, speaking to Ari, but not bothering to leave Sitara out of the loop, as he switched off the translation program on Sarah's terminal, <What's your take?>. The answer was mostly immaterial. For the most part, the chatter was little more than a distraction, a way to pass the time without dwelling on what had just happened, and, even as he waited for Ari to respond, Rhevi began writing messages to Ranah and to High Command to appraise them of the details of the situation relevant to each.

Awkward and nervous and in a new, unfamiliar environment, Sitara followed after Rhevi like he had her on a leash. All she knew was her room was across from "Sarah's", but she didn't know where Sarah's room was. At the very least she could figure it out based on wherever Rhevi ended up.

Standing inside the doorway as Rhevi explored, she peeked curiously inside, not wanting to snoop but still wanting to see.

"'Maternal instinct'?" Ari repeated, laughter in his voice. "Maternal...we talkin' 'bout the same Sarah? Or do ya mean the sorta maternal instinct like when mama animals eat their babies? 'Cause yeah, I can see that."

<I'd be careful about cannibalism jokes, Captain.>, Rhevi warned, <But no, not like that. Not really like humans, either. Her species are survivalists. They'll talk to and bond with their young once their young develop enough to achieve sapience, but that's the most nurturing they get. Once their young hatch, they're expected to learn strength and be strong. It's not uncommon for their young to be given survival tests or be expected to feed themselves through strength or cleverness.>. As he spoke, Rhevi examined a few of the weapons Sarah had made, picking up some of the bladed ones to check the balance and inspect the blades, <I'm not sure how much is social and how much is instinct for them, but Sarah's never really shown much interest in rearing young before. It's a bit unexpected to see that she's apparently building herself a child now.>, he continued, including Sitara in the conversation.

Speaking of... <Sitara, you may wish to have a look at these weapons and see if any suit you. Sarah isn't opposed to the idea of sharing armaments when the situation requires, and having the initiative to arm yourself will put you in better standing with her. She, like most of her kind, respects strength.>, Rhevi advised as he put the weapons back and checked the messages for errors before sending them.

"A child? Whatcha even talkin' about?" Ari said, blinking in puzzlement. "Ya sayin' Sarah's knocked up or somethin'? What, her species produce asexually or...huh...actually, that'd make some sense." Because he couldn't think of a time where he'd ever seen her express interest in anything like that. She seemed more interested in eating faces than anything else. Unless her kind did it like mantises did and bit off the heads of their mates post coitus. Huh.

Sitara meanwhile looked from Rhevi to the weapons, at first uncertain until he explained Sarah wouldn't mind. Hopefully he was right!

"Er...to be honest, I don't really know what suits me," she said, rubbing her chin. "I've just used like guns and shit back home. Didn't do too much. Rividean scales are like fuckin' armor." Her ear twitched and she snapped a look up at Rhevi like a light bulb went off in her brain.

"Sarah got any armor-piercin' stuff? I could use something like that."

<Captain, when I said build, I was being literal. Very literal. Surely you noticed the frame sitting in the corner? It's for an android. Lehktu-380 modified to resemble a Karmid rather than a Hestari, from the looks of it. I recognise the wiring and servos from that time I let her take my second's old maid droid apart.>, Rhevi responded, a faint hint of rebuke in his tone, <Her kind reproduce sexually, like the majority of sapient species. Given her apparent level of interest in finding a mate, I'd say either she's trying to keep her instincts quiet, or she wants a child without having to deal with courtship. She may also have resigned herself to her stature limiting her options.>.

The question of armor-piercing weapons was one Rhevi thought a moment before answering. On the one hand, most of what Sarah had could be readily modified to defeat armor, most often, in the case of ranged weapons, by the use of ammunition designed for the purpose. On the other hand, some weapons had been specifically designed with that in mind. <You'll want to go with either that spike launcher or that plasma lance, if you plan on getting close. Those maces would be good, too, provided you can lift and swing them comfortably. The railgun's good for long-range, provided you can get it braced well, but it takes a while to set up or take down. If you get ambushed, you may have to leave it behind.>, he advised, <Provided you take some armor-piercing ammunition, that pistol there should be a good fit in your hands. I believe it is based on a human weapon. I'd recommend either wadcutters or dart-tip. Take a few extra clips, too.  Running dry without an already-loaded backup clip is a good way to get killed or captured. Same with that assault rifle. Both should serve for short range and medium range respectively.>
