Solar System / Re: Signed, Sealed, Not Quite Delivered [Rhi]

Rhevi noted the Feylini's more relaxed posture with limited optimism. The true test still lay ahead, but, for the moment, it was reassuring to see that she was, indeed, able to be reasoned into calm in otherwise frightening scenarios.  <You, specifically? You were lucky. However, my sister did ask that her intermediary look for Feylini with skills that would be useful for a guide, as well as survival and possibly combat skills. Ideally, a member of the resistance, but there was really no way to determine that without endangering lives and tipping my sister's hand, so that was up to chance.>, he answered, <In short, you, as I understand, were the only one readily available with the right skills. As it was, I'm told a rival or two had to be encouraged to look elsewhere, though that could also have been the intermediary looking to increase his finder's fee.>, he continued. <I wouldn't dwell on it too long. Survivor's guilt can devour you from within if you're not careful. Best to keep moving forward and do what you can for your friends.>, Rhevi added, the last sentence carrying a slight note of sadness in his 'tone' as he remembered buddies who'd died over the centuries in battles he himself had sometimes been one wrong step, a few centimeters, or one second slower/faster from dying in.

<Human, by all accounts. Sarah's only contact with her own kind has been in the form the others the slavers who stole her from a ship's hatchery raised with her. Strange, considering her hatred of humans, but she probably sees something different in him. Probably helps that he doesn't try to cheat her, and seems to be content to leave her to her passion.>, Rhevi responded, <As to what the Rivideans see in your kind, I can't really answer that. I'll admit humanoids have a certain functional beauty to them, and the intelligent ones can be charming, but, really, I fail to see what's so attractive about them. Then again, your species and mine aren't really compatible in that way, so there's that. As for Sarah, well, I don't think she's ever been attracted to anyone.>

<If I didn't, I would never have allowed my sister to send her the coordinates, nor would I have needed to stop her. She's worked with rebels before, on Faren. She knows her way around guerrilla warfare.>, Rhevi replied, <You'll have all the proof you need once you get there, though you could also ask her employer. It's his ship you'll be going on. Fair warning: Draw your line in the sand early. Sarah tells me he's a lecher, but she also informs me he's no rapist. He's a persistent ass, according to her, but he'll keep his hands off until you say otherwise. I'll put my own warning in as well.>, he continued.

<She was once a slave herself. Of course she'd want to free any other slaves she heard of. An entire civilisation being kept as slaves is something you couldn't stop her from putting an end to if you wanted to, unless she actually respected you enough to listen.>, Rhevi answered, <For her, it's more about stopping the Rivideans than helping your people. Freeing your people happens to be the next best thing to trying to stop a planet she doesn't know the location of.>

<In the time it took you to say that, Sarah could have built herself a tank from the ground up, if she knows how to build one.>, Rhevi explained, <And she's smart. She won't try to take over the entire planet at once. She'll set up a camp somewhere, one that's easy to hide, but provides everything possible that the two of you will need, and, if she remembers what she learned in her days on Faren, she'll make small, precise strikes, and disrupt their chain of command whenever the opportunity presents itself. Not to mention she's worked on enough ships' weapons to build her own. For someone like her, it would be child's play to convert them into point defenses and artillery if the need arises, and such weapons, the way she'd build them, would be highly useful for ambushes. As for enemy weapons and defenses, she needs only to take a machine apart once to know how to not only build it, but also how to destroy or disable it. At a distance, if it isn't immune to magic.> He continued.

<On a side note, I wouldn't advise you calling her a lizard to her face, though, to be fair, it's probably one of the less offensive things she's been called by people who don't know her species.>

<That depends entirely on your definition of crazy>, Rhevi replied, with slight amusement in his 'tone', <But I guarantee that wherever she is will be the safest place on the planet for you so long as you keep your words and actions deep. Sarah may be brash, headstrong, and have a temper, but she's also faster, tougher, and smarter than she looks, and her command of magic is greater than many human mages I've fought. She knows, more or less, what she's doing, and, best for you, she intends to free your people. Allowing you to be captured or killed would be slightly counterproductive to that end.>

<As for you not going back to Jeth, well, you will if you want to be free again. You don't even have to stay when you're done. My sister has seen to it that your contract includes a clause which would require Sarah to build you reliable transport to any place of your choosing once you've earned your freedom, and to pilot you there if you do not have the skills necessary. >, Rhevi continued, <There is one Rividean I've heard about who would be bold enough to make repeated attempts to capture you, but I'm told his tastes run... curvier. I highly doubt you would be worth the trouble to him. Sarah will see to that.>

I'm not opposed to a three-way thread for the initial meeting, at least, though, being that it's your plot, I think you should start. As for making it up as we go, that's totally fine, too.

As the Feylini went through the information on the holodisk, Rhevi took the time to do some paperwork, keeping an eye on Sitara as he did via a camera mounted and connected to the terminal in the captain's area for just such a purpose, and noting that she seemed no more at ease after going through the info than she had been before.

As soon as Sitara's words had been relayed to him, Rhevi locked the terminal, then exited the captain's area, a process taking several seconds as the decontamination section of it thoroughly rinsed the toxic water from within the tank off of him.

<Excellent. To answer perhaps the most pressing one, Sarah won't mistake you for a human. Like touch with my species and sight to humans, scent is the most important and most developed sense to her species, and your species has a different scent than humans even to my antennae. She also won't eat you partly because my sister and I have asked her not to, and partly because you're much more familiar with Jeth than she is, and you acting as her guide is how you will earn your freedom, a concept she understands very well, as it was not so long ago, to my kind, at least, that she earned hers.>, he explained privately as he walked over to the couch and stood near it, waiting for her to finish drinking, <Have a seat and fire away. We should have plenty of time to answer your questions before the transfer.>, he continued, adding, <By the way, the name's Rhevi. Fleet Hunter Varrah if you wish to address me formally.> as an afterthought.

Not necessarily a bounty hunter or smuggler, but, as a pirate, Drake's not opposed to transporting illegal items, for the right price, and his two ships are pretty well equipped to deal with almost anyone who'd interfere.

<Ari, food trucks don't usually have ways of bypassing defenses. Or hacking rosters, for that matter. Either you're completely useless with computer security, or that ship's more advanced than that human wants us to think.>, Sarah told Ari, <Not saying to turn down the food. I'm getting tired of dried meat myself. Just saying we might want to be a little more careful.>, she continued, too busy keeping an eye on the scanner data, checking to see if the Sassy Juice had any way for her to tell which systems had been compromised and re-secure those systems, checking systems statuses, and working on the shields to devote more than an eye roll and a warning growl to the wink, though Ari's comment about Riot not having enough sausage got a small 'grin' in the form of her baring her lower teeth slightly.

<Yes. Send them over.>, Sarah answered, attributing the fact that he had heard her when she told Ari what she wanted to her possibly having sent her order publicly rather than privately out of distraction and sending directly to him on the assumption that he was in range, <By the way, if you need to see where you're sending stuff, you can ask.>, she added, including Ari in the response. As she waited for the food to arrive, Sarah did one last check of the modifications she'd made to the shields, making sure that, when she switched the shields over to the new setup to repeat the process with the main shield generator, there would be no issues.

Sarah looked over the data carefully as she waited for a response from the human, not the least bit amused by the complete waste of processing power required to show little hearts over the bits the other ship's captain wanted hidden, rather than simply hiding the data behind a partition, or even putting it on a drive with no network connection. As she looked it over, the Draconian pressed a button on her wrist terminal, causing the data to display on a split screen with the comms in such a way as to allow Ari to look through it at his own pace, her way of showing Ari what she'd found without interrupting her work.

"You couldn't have asked for permission first, rather than attempting to bypass the ship's defenses?", she asked, continuing to piggyback off of the comms. For the moment, Sarah chose to ignore Ykan and Riot, instead pulling up the camera nearest where she'd been working on her datapad and continuing work on the shields at double her previous pace. <Ari. Going to have to reboot the shields in about 20 seconds if we want the improvements in place before he leaves. Your call.>, she told Ari privately.

As the human addressed her by name, Sarah checked the scanner data again, then ran another scan, this time looking for any information they had on her. "Don't recall mentioning any names, human.", she icily hinted, tail blade at the ready despite him not being in the same room.

Answered Questions / Re: Ships ships ships!!

I know I'm not Tally, but as far as the link being dead, the Wiki's been down for a while now. Judging by the generally laid-back attitude of the staff, though, I doubt you'll be slapped down for anything short of an 'invincibility drive'. This place pretty much runs on rule of cool. Rhi would probably be the one to ask as far as what systems ships from in-system use, but, other than that, haven't seen any ship design rejected yet.

Most of the information on the holodisk was fairly standard species information, information on Sarah's appearance, including a full-color, three-dimensional image of her in her usual overalls, all but the last four feet of her tail wrapped around her waist in such a fashion as to still allow her to strike quickly, but still keep the appendage out of her way. Barely out of 'frame' in the hologram was part of a ship's sublight engine, dismantled, over which Sarah was bent, apparently in the middle of inspecting.

Along with the image, the holoplayer displayed general notes about her short temper in simply-bordered 'pages', including a warning not to confuse her with a Rividean or a dragon (the latter gleaned from emails sent to Ranah), and specifying that, while carnivorous, Sarah tended to confine her hunting to non-humanoid creatures with humans as the (relatively rare) sole exception, and generally preferred birds, fish, cephalopods, and aquatic mammals to anything with fur. Of note, however, was an entire 'page' dedicated to as much of her history as a slave as Rhevi had been able to dig up, including her former 'name', with a warning at the bottom that Sarah did not like talking about any of it without a good reason.

<When you have finished looking through the information on that holodisk, inform my slave. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you're wondering why I'm not telling you to tell me directly,>, Rhevi said, soundlessly rapping on the transparent wall, <I can't actually hear you. Everything you're saying to me is being relayed to me word-for-word by my slave. One of the many uses of the Sevarik subspecies.>, he explained, <If you're thirsty, any of the taps on this deck will provide purified water.>.

As the Feylini screamed in frustration, the Sevarik stood and watched. It was simply one of many reactions new slaves had, in the Sevarik's experience, and it was typically a short-lived reaction which resolved itself when the slave was either tired of screaming, or when reason prevailed and the slave realised there was no point in resisting. In the cases where such actions didn't resolve themselves, corporal punishment typically resolved the situation, though, in this case, the Sevarik saw no need for such action just yet. The Feylini would likely tire herself out and need to be awoken, but that action would happen later. For the moment, the Sevarik was content to eat one of the remaining fish bars and watch.

The face clawing would have sparked a warning growl from the Sevarik had it not been for what followed. The awaited moment that reason won out. As the Sevarik approached the Feylini, she sent a telepathic message to her master, informing him of the slave's apparent change in heart word-for-word, then set the remaining fish bar and the kelp bar on the small table before returning to her post at the hatch to the captain's area to resume her supervision.

<Excellent.>, Rhevi answered, speaking privately to Sitara as he swam to the transparent wall, then allowed himself to sink to the floor in his 'land' configuration, facing Sitara, <A good start would be to clean the mess you made earlier, and review the information on the holoplayer disk. That will tell you who you will eventually be dealing with. As a show of good faith, I will tell you that the ship you are being transferred to will bring you to her, and she is neither Rividean nor connected with them. It would be... excruciatingly unwise... to imply otherwise in her presence. The two snack bars my slave has set on the table are for you. One is made of various fish that, to my knowledge, are not toxic to your kind, assuming your kind share the same dietary tolerances as humans, the other is kelp. Both are salty, so, after you finish cleaning, feel free to use the synthesizer to make something more to your taste. Continue to be cooperative, and you will know everything I do about our plans for you long before we surface.>, he explained, arms crossed in an attempt at the body language he'd seen humans use to project strength during negotiations.

[The message is in Hestari Glyphic (Northern Sea dialect). Hestari weeks are ten standard days (five Hestari days), and one Hestari hour is two standard hours.]

Ranah,

Sarah, it seems, is her usual impulsive self. I was informed by her employer that I've missed her by half a week, so my guess would be she read down to your name, downloaded the attachments, then tore off for Jeth without looking back. As a result, I have arranged to leave the slave with said employer, who has agreed to take her to Sarah in my stead. The equipment you asked me to give the slave will be keyed to her collar to discourage her from 'losing' it, and the slave will be told as much, once either she decides to stop being so standoffish, or we arrive at the meeting point. Sarah will likely disable and destroy the collar, chip, and all associated hardware as soon as she sees the slave, so there's no worry about that ending up in any curious hands. The equipment will likewise probably be destroyed after use. As the humans would say, innocent looks and clean hands all around. I strongly suspect command knows exactly what we're doing this time around, given the circumstances, but I will wait until I return home to disclose my full thoughts on the matter. We will be surfacing at the meeting point in one hour, and I will send another message once the transfer is complete.

Rhevi

PS: Got your care package. Were those Jagged Reef eels? I shared some of them with my Second, and we loved them. Any chance you could send some more in the next one?

Kotathe stood away from the table, looking to the artificial being in the corner. "You'll be on our team. If you see any of the Ulthane walking towards us, strike the chest. Hitting the head or anywhere else is pointless."

With the Corrective assault team, I'd imagine, unless he decided to be one hell of a special duty soldier off on his own, or, for some reason, hasn't left the armory yet. It's really up to you, seeing as you're his player. I tend to assume my characters are wherever I left them in the last post unless I've implied otherwise (IE: Stated that my character was following another character, charging into battle, etc.).

[Quick note: The ones crawling up the lifts would need to be on the outside of the ships in order to do so, or have breached inside them.  They're designed to seal to the ships they're breaching in order to not only not vent the ship being breached, but also to prevent just such a tactic.]

In each of the breaching tunnels, the hatches sprang open, two of each assault team opening fire the second the hatches began moving in order to cover the openings with a sheet of suppressing fire, with the other members of each assault team joining in as the growing numbers of Ulthane turned their attacks from an assault to a defensive stand, with less than half of the total Hestari assault forces even able to make it out of the breaching tunnels.

Meanwhile, plasma cannons underneath the Hestari ships began firing at any Ulthane attempting to climb the breaching tunnels, with little regard as to whether or not stray shots hit the tunnels themselves, which were designed to take such fire.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<Fleet Hunter, all Valari Hesta assault teams are reporting limited progress. Numbers two, four, seven, ten, and eleven report tunnels breached>, a comms officer on the largest of the three Cruisers reported, <Likelihood of contamination 87%.>

<Transmit self-destruct to all breached ships. We do not need more of those perversions. As soon as the signal is sent, order Sehru to retreat for backup. Gunners, focus main cannon on the newcomer. Let's see if this talsak speaks as shallow with Hestari gunnery pounding his ship into oblivion.>, the ship's captain ordered.

<Transmit self destruct to infected Valari Hesta, then send retreat order to Sehru. Aye, Fleet Hunter.>, the comms officer repeated, then began making the transmissions as two of the three cruisers began opening fire on the Uthjad's vessel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the cruiser that hadn't opened fire began to rotate itself in preparation for fleeing the battle, five of the horseshoe-crab-shaped vessels exploded, flinging graphene and nahrium shrapnel into all nearby ships, friend and foe alike, all but one of their assault teams having only just escaped the breaching tunnels, and fighting even harder to get to the control centers of the ships they were now stranded on.

On the ship that the Corrective had crashed on, the hatches had failed to open automatically, forcing the assault team inside to trigger the manual release, a process just lengthy enough to put the team in the middle of a firefight between Corrective forces and Ulthane. <Focus fire on the abominations. We'll leave the intruders to the Fleet Hunter's discretion.>, the assault team's Schoolmaster (equivalent to a Commander) ordered, publicly and in a common language used for communicating with humans, as he and his team began firing on the Ulthane, careful to aim for their chests.
