Ari checked the old receipt he'd written the information down on and compared it to the place he was standing outside. Yep, this was it. A nice, neutral place where they could speak and not really worry about being overheard, not that anyone would care. This transaction was pretty mundane. Sure, it was fancy stuff you couldn't get in this part of the solar system, but it wasn't some top secret info, either.
He pulled out his lighter and burned the receipt (half out of habit, as he hated paper trails of any sort, and half just because he could), then pulled out a cigarette and lit up, lingering outside the bar and idly blowing smoke rings. The guy couldn't miss him, what with the rainbow hair and all and the distinctive sleeves; he'd worn a wife-beater because it was the closest he could get to not wearing a shirt without going shirtless.
It'd be interesting to see what kinda guy he was dealing with.
Be equally interesting to see if what he could loosen up with a little alcohol. Get the right person liquored up and you could sometimes cut a fantastic deal. Or get laid.
Frankly, he'd take either or both, if they were cute or an alien. He'd been stuck in space around the same crew long enough he'd welcome the variation.

That had to be the guy. Couldn't be anyone else, from the description Nathan had gotten of him. His contact's hair looked like a rainbow had vomited on it. He bore tattoos too and—of course—was taller than Nathan. Way taller. Had to be above six feet.
All in all, he gave the impression of someone trying too hard.
Nathan broke out of the crowd and caught the man's eye. They couldn't have been more dissimilar. For one thing, Nathan was dressed not to leave an impression, his coat a conservative brown and his hair being the color it was supposed to be. The only thing that might stand out were the two handguns at his hips, well cared for and bearing the marks of frequent use. Not energy weapons those. No, he shot real metal.
"Nathaniel Beaumont," he said, and put his hand out. Right down to business.

Yeah, Ari had formed a lot of ideas and assumptions in his head. Had to say, the guy that stepped out of the crowd and made his way toward him? Didn't fit the mold of any of those assumptions. He blinked a couple times as Tiny, Unimposing, Utterly Forgettable Man approached him--and introduced himself as his guy.
That was it? Shit, he was like pocket-sized!
"Get out!" Ari said with a grin, reaching out and shaking the guy's hand firmly. "You're Nathan? Holy shit. Here I was picturin' someone, y'know..." He held his hand up over Nathan's head. "Bigger."

Nathan sighed, projected good-humored exasperation into it. One of these days he was going to snap and pistol-whip the next guy who commented on his height with that amused, slightly puzzled tone.
"Ah, yeah. Yeah, I get that a lot. Ready to make the deal?"

"Adorable," Ari said, unable to stop just one more little jab. Probably not the smartest thing to do right before a deal, but hey, they both had something the other wanted so he was sure he could risk a little teasing.
He motioned to the bar, signalling Nathan to go in first like the proper gentleman he was. "Sure, let's go. Ari Maxwell, by the well. But I'm sure ya figured that out already," he said. "Drink's on me, pal."

Nathan paused for a split second in his step at that word.
It's okay, chill. Just have to sell him the delivery and then never see him again.
He could swallow his pride and feign a sense of humor for one little transaction. So Ari would be a challenge—after dealing with Bhaskara, was this really that difficult?
"Oh, thanks." He signaled a waitress and chose a table in the corner, where they wouldn't be surrounded on all sides by listening ears. Not that anyone was likely to hear him in this place. It was packed wall to wall and thrumming with din.

Ari slid into a chair across from Nathan and leaned his arms on the table, making himself quite comfortable. "What can I say? I'm a sucker for the cute ones, in more than one way." He winked at Nathan, grinned, and turned toward the waitress just as she approached to take their order.
"I'll just get a beer and whatever he wants," he said. He had all the time in the world today and deals were always so dull. Besides, the guy was being awfully terse; gave him the impression he was the "in and out" sort.

Nathan smiled, ducked his head like he was shy at the compliment.
Yeah, suuuure you are.
"Uh, I'll have the same." He folded his arms on the table. He was staring to work out how he wanted to play this negotiation. "I brought the sample. The rest of the drop is in my cargo hold. Once we make a deal, it's yours."

The waitress returned with two bottles of beer and Ari took a long swallow from his.
"Good deal. Well, do feel free to share it with the rest of the class," he said. "How much ya got in the hold?" And then, after another pause, he eyed Nathan's beer. "Ya sure ya didn't want somethin' better? Ya don't gotta be modest for my sake."

Nathan paused, halfway to reaching for the bag with the sample in it. He smiled friendly like. "Better? It's the same thing you got. I figured you'd know what was good."
He upended the bag on the counter, and shards of a dark, shiny metal spilled out. A superconductor, but one of the few known in the galaxy that maintained zero electrical resistivity at room temperature. Damn hard to get, but worth all the time it took.

"Yeah? Aww, that's adorable. For future reference, I've got shitty taste. Only get what I get if ya like cheap alcohol and ain't particularly fussy about your food, 'cause I can't tell the difference between salmon and mutated catfish."
Apparently.
Putting his beer down, he leaned forward in interest as Nathan, and then let out a low whistle. "Beautiful," he said, looking them over. "How many people ya have to kill to get your hands on that?"

People who called Nathan adorable usually got a dirty look for it. Unless he was trying to sell them something. Then, as now, he put forth a wry smile in response to the cutesy word.
"None." He couldn't keep the pride from edging into his voice when he said that. "Just had to slip past a couple of pirate squeeze points. The planet's a tiny little rock on the edge. Can't even get there without a jump drive."
He was being modest. A nasty dark matter storm blocked off a whole two quadrants centerwise. Only way through was two jump gates on either side, and pirates controlled both. Not only had Diva made through both gates on the way there—but she'd made it back without a scratch, too.
"Feel free to run your scanner over those. They'll check out."

"Oh, mhmm. Yeah, those pirates. They can be tricksy little buggers," Ari said, reaching into his pocket to pull out a small scanner. He tapped a button to activate it but seemed in no rush to scan things and hurry through this transaction.
He idly waved the scanner over the shards and, as promised, the readings came out sound. This stuff was legit. Damn.
"Ya get outta there alright? I mean, you're sure they ain't trackin' you or nothin'? Those guys can be pretty sneaky if ya ain't careful, even if ya think you are being careful, and this is some serious merch."

"Nah. Diva's uncatchable. And anyway, we're all pirates in one way or another. I certainly didn't own the mineral rights to those nodes we mined."
Ninety percent of the vagrants stopping through Cancer could claim the title of pirate for one nefarious deed or another. He kept a working relationship with many of the worst of them, but it was the true pirates—the ones who commandeered and salvaged weaker ships—who had it out for him.

Ari lifted his eyebrows. "Uncatchable, huh? Ain't afraid of jinxin' your good luck?"
Well, now he was curious. Call it a pride thing or whatever, but you didn't go waving around expensive materials and then boasting your ship as uncatchable. That was just asking for it. At least, it was in Ari's head. He'd always liked a challenge.
And he wasn't one of those honorable pirates, either. He'd made deals with people before only to rob them later--or even during the transaction, if he knew where their ship was and had crew enough to carry that out.

Nathan made a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a scoff. "I don't have any good luck to jinx. Just a lot of bad luck I've learned to deal with."
It wasn't so much that things went right for him, as that things went very, very wrong and he always somehow manged to hold it all together by one frayed thread.
"So?" He waved a hand over the scattering of samples on the table. "Thoughts?"

"Whoa there. Where's the fire, buddy?" Ari said with a laugh. "Got somewhere ya need to be or somethin'? Relax, kid. You've hardly touched your drink."
He picked up a shard and turned it over in his hand. "How much ya want for 'em?"

Nathan looked like he was just barely into his twenties. His height helped with the image. It came in handy when he was trying to look naive, or when he wanted someone to underestimate him.
He took a swig of the beer. It wasn't as bad as Ari made it sound, or maybe Nathan was just too used to eating processed meal bars to tell the difference. If he'd ever had a refined sense of taste, spending months out on the edge with nothing but chemical substitutes to eat had taken care of that. "No, nowhere to be. Didn't realize this was a social outing is all. But we don't have to be all business."

"Good. 'Cause ya look like ya could use a good relaxin' outing, kid. All work and no play makes you a dull boy and all that."
Taking up his beer, Ari chugged the rest down and flagged the bartender for another. "Besides, ain't nothin' wrong with mixin' business with pleasure. Not like they're mutually exclusive. Why, the last deal I made here, we sealed it with body shots instead of a handshake. Now that was a good time," he said with a wink.
"I think it's become somethin' of my preferred method."

Great gods, was it that obvious? Nathan hadn't docked at a station for anything other than business in...well shit, years. Even when he stopped on Cancer, he saw to his jobs, saw to his payment, and hauled anchor again.
"Your exploits make me sound downright boring." That could be said for most people on Cancer, if he were honest with himself. He wasn't particularly a daredevil, and he went out of his way to avoid breaking the law. Less attention that way.
He raised his glass in a toast. "To business and pleasure, then."

Ari lifted his glass. "To business and pleasure," he echoed, and clinked his glass against Nathan's before taking a swig of it.
"But seriously, what the hell do ya do when you're around here? I mean, shit. By the time we're outta the black and back into civilization, I'm half outta my mind. Don't get me wrong, I like my crew, but being trapped in a small space with the same few faces and ya end up wantin' to kill each other at some point." He paused and eyed Nathan then.
"Unless your ship's crewed by a harem of supermodels all eager to service ya or somethin'. Then I could see what the rush is all about."

That just brought up nightmarish scenarios of Papillion in a bikini trying to seduce him.
"I spend most of my time lining up more work, usually. Which I'll have plenty of time to do. No rush this time. I'm grounded 'til I hire a couple new crew members. I'm guessing they won't end up being supermodels, either."
He finished off the beer, signaled the waitress for another.

Ari caught the waitress's attention before she could grab the beer. "No beer, tequila shots instead, please."
The waitress soon returned with a round of shots, and with a grin, pushed one toward Nathan. "C'mon now. Live a little. No rush, right?"

Nathan sighed. This was getting out of hand, and he was inclined to let it. What was the worst that could happen?
"Right." He saluted Ari with the shot glass and downed it. Through a grimace, he said, "It's going to take an embarrassingly small number of these to get me drunk."

"Lightweight, eh?" Ari said, sprinkling salt on the back of his hand. "Just means ya gotta build up your tolerance."
He licked the salt, took the shot, and chased it with a slice of lime. "Don't worry. With enough practice, even a little guy like you can run with the big dogs eventually."

Nine times out of ten, Nathan made for a happy, mellow drunk. That tenth time, though, saw him reckless and combative. It was just one of the many, many reasons why he shouldn't be drinking with Ari Maxwell. Too bad Nathan was such a gambler at heart.
He didn't bother with the salt or the lime, just took the tequila straight. When he recovered enough from the next shot to talk again, he said, "I should build up a tolerance in record time if we keep doing business together."

"Well just have to make a habit of it then, eh?" Ari said with a wink before he took a second shot. "You're cute. I wouldn't mind. Hell, I wouldn't mind a lot of things with ya."

A few shots and a few clumsy flirtations later, Nathan was ostensibly done for. It wasn't even entirely a lie. He was definitely drunk, just not as drunk as he looked. He looked like he'd have trouble walking out of there on his own two feet.
"I think I'm gone," he groaned, propping his head up on his hand.

"D'aaaw, ya really are a lightweight," Ari said, and reached out to ruffle the guy's hair. He had drunk as much as Nathan had and was certainly feeling it, happily buzzed and on his way toward getting smashed, but he had extra height, weight, and tolerance on Nathan and wasn't quite as far gone. He didn't have to be far gone to be reckless and foolhardy, though. Didn't even have to have alcohol in his system.
"But ya ain't totally gone 'til you're naked and slurrin'," he added, and lightly cupped Nathan's chin, tugging his head up. "I could help ya with that."
He was more than aware of the shards still sitting on the table between them, and the fact that he hadn't yet paid for them.

Nathan leaned into Ari's hand. "Well I'm slurrin' already. Only need help with the other bit of it."
A fun outing, but a useless business meeting. They hadn't gotten anywhere, and Nathan wasn't making any deals while he was impaired. He was still sober enough to hold himself back from that.

"Well, that's what I'm here for, darlin'," Ari said and, grabbing the front of his shirt, he leaned across the table to kiss Nathan roughly.
Aw, fuck. So he'd gotten a little distracted, but what could he say? Booze made him horny.

Nathan was getting way too into this, way too into what was supposed to be a light con on Ari's preconceptions of him. He met Ari's kiss with equal vigor and sank his teeth into Ari's lip.

Ari shuddered at that, savoring the sweet blend of pain and pleasure, and moaned into the kiss. Goddamn, he was a biter. He adored biters, and he showed how much he adored it by sliding a hand into Nathan's hair and tightening it around the strands, keeping him where he wanted him. He also decided right then and there that, one way or another, this deal wasn't complete until they were both naked somewhere. Anywhere. Fuck if he was picky.
Finally, he broke the kiss but didn't pull away, still close enough to smell the tequila on Nathan's breath. "Alright, your choices are I strip ya here and now or we go upstairs. Ya got five seconds 'fore I decide for ya."

Five seconds, huh? He wasted about three of those deciding whether or not Ari was serious. Then he realized it didn't matter. He wasn't going to risk it.
By way of answer, he stood up and hauled Ari with him by the collar of his shirt. The ore samples went back in their bag.
"Show me where you want me."

Ari stared back at Nathan, expression blank. "Where I want ya."
...Well, alright then!
He wasted no time in putting Nathan exactly where he wanted him, twisting one arm behind Nathan's back and shoving him forward against the table until he was bent over it, knocking their empty glasses out of the way in the process. He gripped him by the back of the neck with the other hand and ground his hips against his ass indecently, not at all caring that they were in a busy bar and were drawing stares, hoots, and shouts.
He liked the attention.

It knocked the wind right out of Nathan. He found his face in the table and his Ari's hands holding him down, Ari's hips rocking against his ass. Everyone in the room had their eyes on the two of them.
So this is how it's gonna be. Good. This was a hell of a lot more exciting than selling rocks. He tested Ari's hold on him.
"You gonna do me right here?" Yeah, right. They wouldn't let him get that far—it wasn't that kind of place—but that didn't mean Ari wouldn't try, and Nathan wanted to get them alone, get Ari somewhere he could pay him back for this. He'd never be able to show his face in here again.

Ari leaned down, closed his teeth over Nathan's ear sharply. "That's the idea, sugar."
At least, the idea was to see exactly how far they got before they got kicked out, but that was just part of the thrill. Releasing Nathan's arm but still keeping a firm grip on his neck, he slid a hand between the man's legs and stroked him through his pants before he went to work on his fly.

Oh shit. Shit! Nathan turned his face down into the table so he couldn't see the staring and the pointing. He was drunk enough to get excited with Ari holding him down, with that hand working on him through his clothes, but not near drunk enough to ignore the crushing embarrassment.
"You're gonna pay for this." And oh gods, he heard a few heavy footsteps approach, and a deep male voice go "Hey!" And damnit but that meant someone was about to put a stop to this, but that also meant someone was right there and seeing everything.

Ari managed to get his hand in Nathan's pants and was working his way around the underwear issue when a voice called out and footsteps came pounding, which meant this little public romp would be drawing to a close. Alas. Working fast, he gripped Nathan firmly right as the man approached and made no effort to hide what it was he was doing. He wanted to see Nathan squirm; such a shame that he was hiding his face.
Two seconds later, and he was being pulled bodily off of Nathan by a beefy, swearing bartender. "You two. Out. Now."

The heat of embarrassment was enough to eclipse his arousal completely then. Nathan drew in on himself even more.
"Damn right I do." It only took a few seconds for the bartender to pull Ari off him, but it felt like an agonizing long time. As soon as he was up, Nathan yanked his zipper closed and rushed out the door, looking straight down at the floor. Laughter and catcalls followed him all the way out.

Ari followed Nathan out the door, caught up with him, and slung an arm around his shoulders. "Aww, sorry, darlin'. But ya did say where I wanted ya, and I just couldn't wait."

Nathan still had a hand over his eyes, even though no one who had witnessed that could see them. "Gods! You're going to have to get real creative to make that up to me."

It was also fortunate that his ship was so damned visually loud, because it made finding it a snap and didn't take much thinking. He motioned to it as they drew near.
"There's my baby." She was about the one thing in his life he could commit to.

After making a halfhearted effort at analyzing some of the hardware just inside, Nathan gave it up as pointless. He wasn't down so much with the critical thinking skills just then. It could wait 'til later.
He eyed the locked door. "We alone?"

Ari stepped in closer, backed Nathan up against the wall and trailed a hand down his body from chest to groin. "Mm. Don't worry about it, darlin'."
Which was a roundabout way of saying, hell if I know. Crew came and went when they were at port and he didn't know who was here, if anyone, or who would be coming back or when. He didn't care; they'd pretty much seen everything of his at one point or another anyway.

Nathan tugged Ari close. One hand brushed his cock through his clothes. He leaned in, lips parted, brought their mouths so close he could feel Ari's breath feather light against his skin.
Then he grinned, slid away and sauntered off further into the ship. "So! Gonna give me the tour?"

He lead Nathan into his room--which was cluttered yet organized in a system that only he understood--and shut the door. Several books and papers and magazines lay scattered on his bed, and he slipped away from Nathan so he could shove them, unceremoniously, onto the floor. Clean-up finished, he turned to Nathan, snapped his fingers, and pointed at the bed.
"Alright. Get naked."

Nathan watched it all with his hands on his hips. When Ari snapped his fingers at him, he scoffed. "Get over here and get me naked, Maxwell."

Ari smirked. Well, much as he was the give-orders-be-obeyed sort, that was a command he could happily follow. "Aye aye, captain."
Grabbing Nathan by the front of his coat and pulling his body flush against his own, he kissed him hard, sucking on his bottom lip and exploring his mouth with his tongue, even as his hands worked to get rid of that coat--which was the biggest obstacle he saw so far and one that needed to go. He let it drop to the ground at their feet and then wasted no time in going for his shirt next, fingers ghosting down Nathan's sides before gripping the hem and tugging it upwards. He turned with Nathan as he worked, moving so Nathan's back was to the bed and pressing forward to walk him into it; it was at the perfect height to hit the back of his knees and topple him over.

The coat fell to the ground and revealed Nathan's sidearms, two semi-automatics strapped to his thighs, inconspicuous with the coat on and now in full view. Fully loaded with non-hullpiercing bullets. He didn't touch the straps. It was Ari's job to get him out of his clothes.
