Gimme Chance

When he was younger, comfort was found here. Now the market seemed to be filled with uneasy dangers. You never know who you can trust. Never know who you can rely on. At least, if you were a mage that is. perhaps it was just how life came to be, or just how it was viewed through his own indigo eyes. Either way, only memeories lived here. Dazan wasn't one to look to the past.

Dazan moved down the street with the grace like a content preditor more than a slave. Just becasue he was bound to a Mordecai didn't mean he'd loose sight of who he was. There were many people around. The vendors never cared much for who bought what as long as they paid. maybe that was the reason he gravitated here so often. it had been too long since his last "day off." Teaming up with his new mordecai had been more difficult than he thought. Larsa proved hard to understand, even harder to read. Dazan shook his head, letting the thick braid swing lightly side to side.

For right now he was free. he wouldn't think about that.

From stall to stall, shop to shop, Dazan wandered in and out. He paid little mind to the people around him, but never tried intentionally to get in anyones way either. The things distracted him, jewlery, crafts, sizzling foods... all of it madde him content. no one really stopped him. Likely because his bangs covered the wretched golden headband hardwired to his head. After hours of browsing, the long haired man finally bought a fruit to munch on. it was apple like, but not nearly as delicious. He settled him self in the entry of a nearby alley where he could munch on the blue fruit. With a twist of a wrist, a breath, and a good dusting of it, he took a decent bite. This spot had a good view of the area around. The docks weren't terribly far from here, but even as a bound mage he wasn't crazy enough to wander to the small, port without reason. Leaning against the building, his eyes went forward, but he was awar of everything around him.

For the first time Kyra had earned herself some alone time by not being so outright verbally subordinate. She of course was by no means behaved, but for some reason Luka trusted her enough to let her go out by herself for a couple hours. Luka...wasn't horrible, she was well aware that she could have been stuck with way worse. However he embodied everything that was being done to her. So she couldn't accept him, couldn't even stomach the idea of doing that.

She was wandering around the market. A place where she was supervised but not. She couldn't really buy anything yet, in a way it was just reminding her what had lost as she watched the families buying the supplies for that weeks dinners. She may never have that. Ever. She swallowed roughly. She kept adjusting her hair so it was over her headband, it still felt like people were staring at it. Right at it. Probably just being self conscious. She couldn't believe this had happened. Her worst nightmare, and she had a feeling she wouldn't wake up.

She smiled at a fruit vendor who was sort of smiling at her. She couldn't tell what his eyes were on, her face, her body, of the faint glimmer of the headband through her dark red hair. When he looked away to talk to a family her hand snaked out quickly grabbing a piece of fruit and hiding it in her coat. She knew it was pointless, she knew she was rebelling against anything but it still felt good.

She snuck away from the booth walking for awhile before taking it out of her coat. She stopped by an alley way finally taking the bright fruit out of her coat. it was an orange red color, very shiny. She bit into it, some of the juice hitting her tongue she made an 'Mmmm' noise aloud.

Rebellion tasted yummy.

Freedom. Vy had never really had that. Kindness. He didn't have that either. He wanted both, but there wasn't a chance, being both a scientific experiment, and a military personnel here in Edanith. Still, he was given a little time to breathe and be by himself after his mage had died. What was his name again? He didn't remember at all... A spike of guilt went through him momentarily, before he sighed and fingered the headband in his pocket. He pulled his hat low over his eyes, looking around amiably. He'd been here a while back... He couldn't recall how long ago, but it seemed like a long time.

He'd lived here a while back, trying to figure out things about himself besides who he was. He had been given a name and apparently he was 21 years old, but he didn't know. He couldn't remember anything past the day he was summoned or created or whatever. He could only wonder where he came from, and who he was before then.

He straightened his posture, looking around. He found a fruit vendor he remembered, walking over with a wide smile and bought a fruit. His ear twitched under his hat as he heard the vendor mutter about three people heading in the exact same direction and missing fruit. He shrugged it off and wandered around, turning down an alley way. He munched on his fruit, a golden yellow colored one. He didn't pay attention and ran straight into someone, tripping and running into the wall to avoid them as he saw them too late to avoid the collision.

Though his full intention was to watch out for other people, Dazan found himself lbeing quite distracted. Trinkets, toys, a gang of low grade hover scooters, and a number of other items in the hands of other Edanites were only a few things he managed to take in. Patrolling guards and those with gold headbands also managed to catch his eye. It wasn't too hard for him to spot a fellow mage. The guards were not where he last remembered them. No doubt to do with how early it was in the evening. Luckily, this part of town didn't die down until well after the moons have risen. Though he had no active thought of doing anything reckless (especially with a new Mordecai), it never hurt to be prepared.

He'd taken a few more bites of his fruit when he caught sight of a young woman heading his way. Something about her seemed familiar, but Dazan tried not to dwell on it. About half way towards him, she pulled out a fruit of her own. A good one judging from how shiny it was. He averted his eyes when he realized his eyes were lingering too long. The last thing he wanted was any unnecessary attention. He looked at his own fruit just as she clearly expressed how much better hers was than his own. Apparently, she had settled no too far from his own location. With a mental sigh, he fought the urge to frown at it in his hands. Tossing it up in the air one more time, he caught it with resolve. No sense in letting it go to waste.

He turned on his heel, heading down between the buildings while taking another bite. Before he could chew, he heard the sound of footsteps behind him. Instead of turning to confront whoever it was, Dazan tried to head closer to the side of the somewhat narrow way. It wasn't fast enough though, as almost immediately he felt someone run into him from behind. It wasn't full on as the person managed to trip and fall against the other wall, but it was enough force to cause the fruit to dive down his throat. Dazan went into a coughing fit, trying to coax it down, or up, hell, dissolve for all he cared. Thankfully it didn't take long for it to come up, and out. Leaning over with his hands on his knees, he took a few steady breaths before casting a glance to the one who ran into him. Dazan knew that his headband was in sight as his bangs were hanging away from his forehead. He took a swallow before standing up tall and turning to face the young man who was near him.

"You Alright?" Dazan asked. It may have sounded stoic, but there was more concern to be found deep in his eyes.

Kyra sighed as she ate the fruit. It was worth every little risk, of course to her the risk was most of the fun in things. This probably would not have tasted as good if she had to pay for it. She started remembering people she had stolen with when she needed to. The life she had been leading before she came back here. She frowned thinking that it was pointless to wonder. Pointless to care, this was home now, a perverted horrible version of it, but she was stuck.

Kyra noticed the man going down the alley passed her but didn't really take note of it or lift her eyes to him when he did. The only time she seemed aware was when she heard a bit of a stumble then a coughing sound. She turned looking down the alley and her eyes went wide. She took off down the alley.

"Are you two..." She froze when she saw one of the men rise up off the ground...Dazan? She knew him, like really knew him. They had known each other before she left Edanith...so long ago. Was it really him though? she wanted to say something but was nervous...scared. She noted the other person but sort of just looked passed them. She...how could she just run into him on the street randomly? Are things like that even possible?

Vy rubbed his nose, tasting blood. He mentally went through his body, making a list of the injuries. Nose bleed, scrapes... my fruit... He sighed, looking over as someone else came. Great, another spectator.

"Only a nose bleed... I wasn't paying attention," he apologized, trying to wipe away the blood that streamed out of his nose. The most he did was smear it, so he gave up and tilted his head back. He saw the headbands, and paid them no heed. After all, he wasn't very different from them then, was he? He used the wall to stand, his hat tumbling off to reveal his ears, and the headband falling out of his pocket. Furry ears... headband. Both things he didn't want anyone to see. He flushed with, embarrassment and retrieved his belongings before trying to run off.

His eyes fell on the one who approached them. She looked more familiar up close. Freckles, red hair... He knew her. For some reason, it rubbed him the wrong way. Dazan didn't want to dwell on the past. He couldn't afford to if he wanted to survive in the now. But why in the world was she here? Last he heard she had gotten away.

His gaze on her started to turn into a subtle glare of anger and confusion. As he listened to the taller mage, Dazan reached into a pocket in his jacket. He pulled out a handkerchief and held it in front of the man before he could run off. "Here," Dazan's eyes fell on him, taking in his features without moving his eyes too much. They lost there heat and took more of concern again. He didn't seem to recall this young man before. Somehow though, it seemed as if he knew him too. "People will think the worst if they see you in a hurry and bleeding."

He fell silent for a few moments trying to deal with his inner inferno. His face remained calm, but he knew his eyes were betraying him. He had to think. The part happy to see a familiar face had long since been buried years ago. This was Edanith. If it was a mage, he could only hope not to see someone again for hope that it was cause of them getting away. Finally, his mind couldn't take anymore without risk of somehow awakening his Mordecai.

Again, his eyes turned to Kyra. "What are you doing here? I thought you were off this planet?" Without much pause, he turned to the taller mage again, gesturing to the gold headband in his grip. "How did you manage get that off?"

Somewhere in her mind she knew she should care about the guy with the bloody nose. She nodded mechanically at him when he spoke. Kyra just couldn't focus, too much of her past was flying forward towards her wooshing passed. All these images and feelings. She wasn't sure what to do with them. It made her ache, and feel happy. There were too many things happening at the same time. Maybe she should have expected seeing people from her past but she was blind sided.

"Well...I thought I got far enough away. Apparently someone here decided I hadn't." She frowned looking away remembering Taros with a growl. "A bounty hun..." her eyes were directed to where Dazan's were as he cut her off with a question she would have cut him off with as well. Kyra's hand went to her own headband for a moment. Touching it, remembering how recently it hadn't been there.

"Your headband..." She breathed hard for a second. Hope was something she hadn't had in a month and a few weeks. Was there an actual chance of getting the headband off...and surviving? She bit her lip as she looked at him. She tried not to let her train of thought go too far, however something was building in her mind. Something stronger than her new almost broken attitude, it squashed it like she had never though about accepting her fate.

He clapped his hat over his ears again, hiding them. He looked at them, spotting headbands too. Except they were screwed on. Headbands equals some kind of magic user. Headbands on the head that were unable to be taken off meant mages with Mordecai... The brief change in breathing pattern meant it was a mage that wanted to be free. Free...? he thought, the thought of deserting clicking.

"I'm... a Mordecai..." he said quietly, voice filling with hatred at what he was forced to be. He stood there, wiping away the blood from his nose. By saying that, she should know that he could take it off at will. That's right. He wanted to be free of the military and to be free of the scientists who continually watched him.

Great. Dazan wouldn't have figured this man to be a Mordecai. The way the man was acting it almost seemed as he was a prisoner himself. No, he wouldn't permit his thoughts to go there. Instead of tensing, his body seemed to relax a bit more. His mind became clearer. The only feeling he had was concern in a corner of his heart for how Kyra was taking this. He knew how she felt about being free with her family, whereas Dazan had resigned himself to life as a Mage of Edanith.

With a Mordecai around, regardless of how he felt, Dazan knew his day off may be over. Though he was bound to Larsa, he always had to mind other Mordecai as well. It was one of the reasons he was so highly prized as a mage. The long haired man never cared about recognition, but it had came to him. For the first time in a while, no thoughts came to him. His eyes stayed focused on the other man, ready for anything needed to prevent either him or Kyra from ending up in some sort of trouble.

Kyra heard her favorite word, Mordecai. She was just getting to be alright with Luka. Any other Mordecai was out of her range of caring. She reacted like someone had slapped her across the face and started backing up towards Dazan, slowly, carefully. Words reflexively left her mouth trying not to appear to distressed, but failing utterly. She was never one for secrecy.

"Oh...a mordecai." She couldn't keep the venom out of her words. Even though this man said his job in a strange way...one that sounded like maybe he felt like she did. That couldn't be possible though. She wouldn't hear of it.

Vy felt the sudden change in their expressions, holding his hand up and backing away from them. He didn't want to get hurt, and he hated being a Mordecai. Some of the mages he depended on so much absolutely hated those in his position. The female seemed to be one of them, and the male one was... unreadable. Reflexively, he held up his hands in front of him, ready to be hit in some way. It always happened like that.

"I... I'm sorry... It's not like I wanted to be what I am! I-I'll just go..." he whispered harshly, rubbing at his eyes that were burning for some reason. He hit the wall, ears pressed flat against his head as he tried to skirt around them.

Instinctively Dazan reached out in an effort to grab the taller man's wrist. "Wait," he said in a steady tone. Both movement and word had been made without thought. Dazan wasn't sure if he said it to himself, or for the Mordecai with strange ears.  "Please," he added in for effort, arm returning to his side. if it didn't work, he'd simply follow the Mordecai. it was too strange that Dazan never saw him before.

"My name is Dazan," he said.  Indigo eyes watched the man without judgement. He knew Kyra was closer to him now than before. He pushed the ironic thought aside. with his mind on the matter, he gave Kyra a quick glance. it was not a look of expectation, but one of him going at it alone. The last thing Dazan wanted was for things to turn hostile, but if anything went wrong, he didn't want her to be a part of it. Regardless,  there was enough pause for anyone to say anything. "You said you didn't want to be what you are," dazan stated more than questioned. it was clear this was not your ordinary mordecai.

Didn't want to be a Mordecai? Kyra's words caught in her throat. She was debating whether or not to say something, luckily Dazan cut in and did it for her. She didn't want to be the one in trouble if this was all some sort of ploy to see which mages were ready to sprint off of Edanith. Though she was surprised to find out when she arrived that may seemed fine with where they were. That whole idea made her a little ill.

"Yeah, wait. Sorry for going so defensive." She shrugged catching Dazan's eyes as he looked at her. "Just sort of a reaction." She was looking at Dazan after she apologized. Letting him take the lead and covering her own ass basically. No need to step out on any limbs that weren't tested yet.

Vy turned to him, a bit frightened and a bit curious at the same time. They were the first two to actually show him any respect as a humanoid or as any sentient being. His ears twitched constantly, betraying his nervous state of mind. There was constant twitching in the back of his pants as well, but taking into account that he had ears, meaning that he probably had a tail to match.

"V-vyacheslav..." he stammered, meeting their eyes briefly in turn, before continuing, "I-I don't... I hate being a Mordecai and what I am!" he snapped hatefully, ears pressing flat against his head as he bared his teeth this time. He seemed more animal than human, but... one could never really tell.

"You probably... hate me for just being a Mordecai, r-right?" he mumbled, going back to being the stammering, shy guy again.

Dazan tried to suppress more thoughts caused by the red head. There had been a fair amount of time the roles had been reversed, despite how much his younger self wouldn't have admitted it. With even more effort, he forced the past away. His mind needed to be still if he didn't want Larsa, his own Mordecai, to pay attention to Dazan's mind.

Even if Kyra wasn't here (which was also something he didn't want to think about), he still had the mystery of Vy his mind would try to sort through. At the time, his thoughts weren't being very subtle in his mind. Best focus on something stable. That ended up being the twitching ears on the Mordecai's head. Though he was looking at Vy, Dazan could see them perfectly if he didn't focus his eyes too much.

At the sound of the hate in Vy's voice, Dazan's inner balance was disrupted again. This time it wasn't his own fault. It was Larsa. He could feel him at the edge of his mind, looking for their connection. Zan tensed before looking in the direction he felt Larsa coming from. Never in a million years could Dazan be thankful enough for whatever mind abilities he had. For a moment he didn't take a breath, he just stood there as if hiding from the inevitable. He had to get out of range.

"No," Dazan said from no where. He closed his eyes to still his mind once more before looking at Vy. "I do not hate you. Not everyone can escape what fate we're birthed to." Dazan was going to look at Kyra, but his mind put him in his place. Until Larsa was well out of range, not looking at her would be the best thing to do. He hoped at least. More strongly was the presence now. A small smirk came to his lips. It did not lighten the mood, and certainly didn't reach his eyes. "Anyone want to go for a walk?"

He would wait a second for them before leaving out the alley. The direction he chose was simple enough: NOT towards Larsa. The port was some distance away. He paused where it met the larger street to see if the others were coming or not. If Kyra was.... If Vy' came along, it would make Everything easier. Plus, they might be able to find out more. He hoped his demeanor wasn't putting off anyone. A lot of things caught him off guard. Now, he had to seize any chance he could to help.

Kyra felt like an outsider as she watched the two speak back and forth. She wasn't sure what to believe and what to trust. She wanted to trust Dazan just out of priciple, out of knowing him, out of their history. Who knew what one turned into after so many years though. She watched him closely like he was her prey, but there was a different sort of attitude in her eyes, more like affection.

"I'll try not to hate you." She told Vy quickly, she doubted that she could though. It would take a long time not to absolutely loathe a Mordecai. Luka, her eyes turned away from the two as she thought about him. Well he was different. He knew his job but he viewed her like a person, well sort of. She bit her lip. There was something else too but she couldn't put her finger on it.

Then Dazan was telling them they should head down somewhere else. He must have had a reason. She followed him quickly her eyes scanning the world around them. It was difficult to tell what he was running from, or if he was. Maybe that's just what she assumed when people took off now. They were running from something.

Vy watched them, confused as to why they were suddenly leaving. He followed, curious to see where they would go, where they would take him. He could faintly sense that Dazan was apprehensive about something, while he could only feel something radiating from Kyra. He couldn't quite discern what it was. His steps were light and quick as he walked behind them, hiding his strange appearance.

He felt a pulse travel through his body, hiding a pained grimace. Right, he had no mage contracted to him so he was dying... he'd forgotten about it when he bumped into these two mages. What would happen if I told them about my condition? They'd probably hate me even more... I have to hurry back, but I want to know... I'll go back when they leave.
