On the Edge of Tangibility (Open)

Bright, yellow light washed over the drab grey structure and bathed the ground in a soft hue that didn't seem to fit with the cold mood of the setting. Although it hurt his sensitive eyes a little, Karn Ult'arien found it comforting. He never was able to get out much, it was always such a privilege no matter what the conditions outside were like. Unfortunately, he never had time to enjoy it for long; such a thing wasn't truly for him to enjoy.

Karn shuffled his feet and lowered his head once more as he followed a short queue into the guarded front gates of the complex. The ground here resembled the ground out in the unclaimed deserts, rocky and sandy and devoid of life. This was different though; where the deserts were vibrant red, the ground here seemed to be soaking up the grey from the imposing building. The boy didn't dare risk a glance up to take in the rest of its architecture.

The mages were led around to an underground side entrance. Karn descended the steps and waited for the more specific orders and details to be explained to him by Liwet, his new Mordecai. Before now, he had never been in a genuine hospital, let alone a military hospital. Karn suspected it may have taken a lot of persuasion for him to get this far.

While he was thankful to his Mordecai for the opportunity to be involved in helping and in such a- comparably- vast way, he wondered when he would be terminated in favour of someone more talented. It wasn't a secret to him that he wasn't the first choice for anyone, and wouldn't be the first healer for anyone to go to when it really counted. He briefly wondered if he should bring it up to Liwet, but quickly decided against it. Not only was it against etiquette, but Karn was sure the Mordecai were far more able to see the options and make the best decisions. What did he know about any of that anyway?

'You are being separated into two groups. Follow the second one down the left hallway. At the very end are your living quarters,' Liwet's thoughts permeated through to his consciousness. Karn did as he was told and silently made his way down the cold path. When they reached the living quarters, he was rather surprised. Compared to the spaces he'd grown up and lived in until now, this was luxuriously large. For a moment, he was worried that he had followed the wrong group; surely something like this was for valuable assets, not for the likes of himself.

'Compartment H4 is your living space and where you will stay until you are used,' Liwet's silent words came to his mind once again. Karn picked his gaze up from the floor only long enough to look at the plaques and locate his designated cell. A small frown tugged on one side of his mouth and he stepped in to settle down on the floor at the rather large space. For now, that would do, he wasn't sure he could get himself onto the bed.
