The Best Carrots taste of... Carrot [nix!]

Ellis tucked his com away into his back pocket, checking himself out in the mirror before he went. Fixed a few locks of silvery hair behind his ear and rubbed the scales under his eyes. He didn't look bad or sleepy or anything. He fixed his scarf, did up a few buttons of his sweater, one last grab of his empty bag for potential groceries and he checked his com again.

"Leaving now"

Awesome. Ellis smiled, exciting because hey sort of new people. The few times he'd met the other Scorpion had been... Tense? Ellis hadn't felt tense but the air felt heavy. Thick. They were his family now though sort of. So. Hurray? Did he want to bring some pie for Dorian? Riss. Ellis chewed on his lip for a moment, one hand on the door handle and looking into the kitchen.

Nah.

Ellis hit the elevator button impatiently, determined to get to the lobby first because he knew Riss wouldn't wait for him. Sort of. He was pretty sure the other guy wasn't going to wait for him. So, he'd give it ten or fifteen. If Riss didn't show up - that meant he'd come and left without him already. Ellis frowned slightly at the idea but... He was knew. The Scorpions were notorious for not being very... Friendly. Which Ellis was fine with.

Being left behind though. Potential ouch. Still, Ellis tapped his booted foot, checked his com one last time and then stared at the elevator doors like an eager puppy.

Asking if the new over eager happy kid wanted anything was asking for trouble. If he had been face to face with the new Scorpion there was no way he would have opened his mouth. He probably wouldn't have even asked Guidry, and at least that alien brat was tolerable.

In all fairness he didn't know this Ellis kid enough to judge. He was too cheery and too loud though. What Jack was thinking Riss didn't presume to know, but he sure as shit wouldn't have recruited Mr Sunshine.

Normally none of this would matter. He didn't have to work with these new kids the way the rest of the squad did. And yet here he was, waiting in the lobby, checking the time on his com and wondering how long he needed to wait before it was ok to leave without the kid. As a senior squad member, it was probably not right to leave without him at all.

Riss tapped his foot impatiently and swung his shopping tote over his shoulder and looked toward the elevators catching a glimpse of his own disheveled appearance in the reflective chrome doors. Even his oversized tee was a wrinkled mess. Maybe he should have thrown a hat on over his mess of silver blue hair. It didn't matter. He shoved his hands in his pockets to make sure he had his cigarettes. Good.

Ellis watched the elevator door, growing a little more put out by the moment. A flat out 'no don't come with me' would have be preferred to just... This. A look at his com again and he sighed before looking around and...

Motherfucker!

When did he get there?

"Riss!" Ellis said, tucking his com away again. "You were here this whole time?" He flushed, looking around sheepishly, "Sorry, I didn't see you." Could have sworn the lobby was empty. Now he was an asshole for making Riss wait. "Do you have a bag?" He wiggled the balled up fabric bag in his hand, "I have two if you need one."

How had he not noticed that one of the other Pilots mulling around the lobby was the very kid he was waiting on? The truth was easy and stung.

He didn't remember what Ellis looked like. In his mind the lid looked very different than he did in reality. Or more accurately he was confusing Ellis with someone the kid reminded him of.

Instead of trying to apologize, or explain himself he answered all of Ellis' comments and questions with one simple, "Its fine."

He did at least gesture to his own nag though it was considerate of the other Scorpion. Riss made his way to the door, looking back at Ellis as if to say 'are you coming?'.

while he hadnt been in Margad long, the kid loved to cook. So he politely followed Riss to the door not unlike a puppy and remained a few hands away while they walked.

Most of the squad exuded a 'dont touch me' air and Ellis wasnt interested in finding out what would happen if he did. Kind of. Well, he was, he just didnt want to be on the other side of that flailed fist. The walk to the market was quiet, Ellis with his hands stuffed in his pockets, silvery hair catching the light.

"Ever make ravioli before?" Ellis inquired, eyebrows up with a renewed interest in his eyes. "oooh, I'll have to get a pasta maker. Good idea, Riss." Ellis grinned, "I think im going to try to make pumpkin pie. What are you gling to make?"

Riss decidedly did not like this kid. He barely knew him, but what he knew of him was he was enough surface observations to decide he didn't like him, and his company- like the company of anyone, was unwanted.

Despite that, when the reached the market he found himself going from produce stand to produce stand waiting to make sure Ellis was still following him. Making sure the kid didn't get lost. A ridiculous notion since Ellis was a Pilot after all.

"Salad." Was all he offered in response to the kid's prattle. Ellis was cute, if it weren't for his scales and markings he might have been recruited under the old regime, even though those fuckers were rotting in a cell or hopefully dead, it still seemed sad when new recruits joined their ranks. Nothing would happen to these poor saps but it still seemed like a miserable occasion. Poor fools straight out of Candidacy looking forward and being proud of joining a squad. Maybe it was cause it reminded him of himself at that age.

After selecting a few vegetables Riss made his way to the lettuce and picked up head after head, turning them, putting them back, squeezing them a bit and listening to the sound they made. After picking what appeared to be the best one on the stand he turned to Ellis. "Where ya from?"

Riss' voice tried to be gruff, tried to hide the Amristan accent, the rising inflection and almost sing song like quality it bore, but even trying couldn't mask it completely.

Talking made him... Far less intimidating.

Salad.

Ellis almost frowned, though his eyebrows twitched together. Salad. That was it? Who lived off of salad? It was a little disappointing, he wasn't going to lie - not even to himself. Sure being in a squad was every kids dream come true but... Ellis watched Riss do his shopping. Watched him examine every head of lettuce like the perfect one would taste the best or be the most crispy or...

A tilt of his head as he watched, lips pursed. "Uuuuh...." the question caught him off guard and he quickly blinked his big green eyes. "Aurora," he said simply, offering a smile, "Sorta." A small shrug," I was born there." A bright smile and Ellis gathered more items before he gave Riss a moment to... Process? The information? "And you? Where are you from."
