Wastelands' Giant Lizards
« on: August 31, 2014, 11:38:55 am »
1. Race name Giant Lizards (grouped together only by the couldn't-care-less attitudes of Wastelands explorers)
2. Characteristics Giant Lizards come in three main types, one of which resembles a wingless dragon, somewhat stupider than they but still cunning, another of which is similar to a massive, armour-plated salamander, and the last of which is only 2 feet tall and 5 feet long, resembling a typical lizard.
Type a are clever and generally unagressive, although they will eat anything they can find if they are hungry, and form stores of live prey when their eggs are close to hatching. They tend to be about 13 feet tall, and 22 feet long, with no variation between males and females. Colours, horns, and exact proportions vary massively.
Type b are surly but not particularly aggressive if placated. They will attack, but acting calmly and submissively should calm them down, and after this they can be quite friendly, approaching and sniffing you, and perhaps keep you company a while. They tend to be dull greens and browns, and are about 6 feet tall and 14 feet long. They are heavily armoured and have wickedly sharp claws.
Type c are timid when alone and vicious predators when in groups, willing to attack anything. They are always green, grey or purple, and have soft skin and many sharp teeth.
Describe what it looks like, the typical temperament, things like that. ^^
3. Homeland Wastelands. Type a prefer to den in caves, types b and c can den anywhere that they can dig. They're all found all over the wastelands, as they can't afford to be picky.
Is it native to a certain region/country? What kind of habitat do they favor?
4. Special abilities and distinguishing features Type a are psychic; most are telepathic, some can move things with their minds, some can create fire, and a few can teleport things. The specific psychic abilities that each has are difficult to predict. Type b are commonly empaths and occasionally telepaths, but very rarely any other for of psychics. Type c are incredibly venomous, and have a rudimentary form of telepathy.
Any magical abilities, special skills, etc.?
5. Life cycle Type a: Live on average for 200 years, can live for over 700. Hatch in clutches of about 15 from a healthy mother, more commonly about 7, are cared for until they are approximately 30, at which point their hard scales and psionic abilities beyond telepathy develop. After this they go round in groups of 30 to 70 year olds, then split and go off alone until they find a mate. It's not uncommon for a group of 3 or 4 adults to form when two of them mate, and they then help to raise the hatchlings. Although adults and younglings do den elsewhere, clutches are almost always layed in caves.
Type b: Live on average 100 years, have a top lifespan of around 600. Layed in clutches of 3-5 in an underground den stocked with food in the form of plants and roots, left to fend for themselves once hatched. Stay alone in their clutches until they're about ten, then find an adult to 'mentor' them. When they're around 30 they start to split off, but the young ones still stay close to each other. They become fully independent at 50, but start mating at 30. They do not form mated pairs.
Type c: Maximum lifespan of 60 years, not uncommon to live that long. Layed in clutches of 25 or so, raised by a full 'clan' of about 200, mature at about 7 years old, some leave and form new clans, some remain.
What's the average lifespan? When do they mature? Etc.
6. Social Structure Type a: As above, when they meet strangers of the same species they often stick together for a while, and they mate for life (unless one dies, then they'll find another). Weaker members of the species may tag onto a mated pair to assist, as said above. There is little posturing and fighting, except in the youngling groups, as when they are full grown it's obvious which are stronger. They aren't territorial, as they are nomadic, aside from the rare old ones and mated pairs, which den in one place and maintain set territories which they won't allow younglings into, or adults to hunt in.
Type b: Aside from having strong bonds to their siblings, they are solitary creatures, and will ignore others of the species unless they perceive them as a threat. They generally don't like living near others of the species or other Giant Lizards. They tend to congregate in certain places to breed, although it is unknown what makes them do this, as it isn't always at the same time, and different ones have different times when they do this. Not territorial in particular, as don't tend to settle for long, but will fight if another seems to be taking their prey. The issue is generally resolved without injury.
Type c: As above, live in clans their whole lives and defend clan territories and prey.
Is it a social creature or does it live in groups? How do they behave around others of their kind? What is their society like?
