A whim taken to far?(Tally)
« on: January 30, 2013, 01:16:53 pm »
So Kate had to admit it to her self, she had decided to mentor an candidate,  Not only on a whim she picked the candidate at random from a list.  She had looked over a brief overview of the man.  but an Empathy though.  She imagined the shake of a head her own mentor would of given her.  She sighed, Her dragon Tanis chastised her for choosing so frivolously .  She just smiled and anxiously waited, as she absent mindedly  projected the images of a tropical jungle in her room.  She smiled as she was working on a "rock"  as a table and was fixing some random machine.  She made her living fixing machines when she wasn't needed for her ability with light.    which she was sure was being observed right now by the pesky researchers of psionics.

Kate laughed thinking of something she almost put in the illusion. She  would just have to wait to see this young man. He was surely a great candidate making it to level 5 without an mentor. She just hoped she didn't have to help him with the whole empath thing.

It was somewhat unorthodox for Paris to receive a mentor so far into the candidacy but, on the other hand, without a mentor what would he be doing all day in the Citadel?  One needed a mentor to assist, else the entire purpose of moving Stage Fives into the Citadel became void, didn't it?

Though at this point, he considered candidacy a mere formality.

He'd been assigned a room directly below Pilot Spellman's for easy access between the two of them.  They'd never met, so today promised many enlightenments and surprises!  Such as regarding the curious means by which she'd chosen him as a candidate!  An empath and a technopath together?  The possibilities!

Paris arrived at her door and buzzed for entrance.

Kate opened to door, with her technopathy and a laugh. " Come in!  " She said  with a large smile towards the door.   She sent an image of the man to her dragon who stayed silent. Kate didn't actually stop working though, she was still bent over the bench working on her device.  She wondered what he would do as she talked to the machine outloud like she often does. " Stay still a moment... Yes yes.. .Perfect!" She jumped back as the little robot flew towards  her just missing her head.   " Now no more crashing into walls"  The robot chirped and went to dusting another room.  She turned to Paris and smiled.  " So your the Candidate? " She began to look him over.

Paris found himself walking into a jungle, and Pilot Spellman herself using a rock as a desk.  Ah, illumokinesis.  The fun he might have had with that ability!  Not that he resented empathy at all.  Emotion suited him as an element.

He nearly flinched when that little robot went flying at the Pilot's head, but managed to keep his composure.  No Pilot needed a candidate worrying after them.

"Yes, Pilot Spellman.  It's a pleasure."

She ended her illusion and now her room was just a standard given room.  It was rather messy, in the way that she had a bunch of parts around.  What did she do now? she hadn't had a Candidate before, her mentor would of found something to yell at her for.  " So can you go over with me What an Empath does exactly?" She wondered what his explanation was.

Kate smiled, waiting, cringing as he heard the robot crash again. She sighed a bit, it would seem that inventing was not her thing.

Paris was almost sad to see the jungle go.  It wasn't every day one got the opportunity to work in a tropical environment with all the beauty and none of the insects or oppressive heat.

He stood with his hands clasped behind his back.  "Yes, sir.  We interact with emotions as telepaths interact with thoughts.  In particular—"

A crash from the other room gave him pause, but he supposed if it were important she would be tending to it?  "Uh, in particular I am adept at perceiving ambivalence and layered emotional responses.  I'm looking forward to a career path as a counselor."

She smiled, " Good now, you are to be my assistant correct? Could you demonstrate your skill?"  She wanted to know more about what he could do,  Meanwhile  she toyed with Paris's phone, adding her number to it.   She  wondered what he would do to show her, if he impressed her she would take him to dinner on her, if not well then she was going to send him off for the rest of the day.   She wondered what on earth she was going to use him for.  But alas she would find things, perhaps he could help her with some of the machines.

Hm, tricky.  She wanted a demonstration, but hadn't really given him permission to read her.  He would use the people around them, then!  Fortunately his range was more than sufficient to provide her with an example of his abilities.

"Ah, well..."  He grew quiet for a moment and his eyes unfocused while he sought out emotional states on the floors above and below them.

"Yes.  The officer who lives below you is in a state of physical contentment, likened mostly to what people experience after enjoying a particularly large and satisfying meal.  And right next to him is a woman experiencing some minor, acute stress of the type associated with challenging work activities."

Paris's eyes darted to the hallway where the little robot had disappeared.  He hadn't heard from it after the crash...

Kate looked him over and wondered what to do with him. " Nice! I didn't know you could find that all out, your range must be impressive, Well are you hungry?  Its on me of course. "  She wondered where she would take him, as she waited for a response, as she liked a number of spots. She  would have to let Tanis meet him face to face as well, as surely she was interested with her candidate.
Kate knew that the main part of a mentor at this stage was to show them the life of a pilot and such until a dragon chose them.  she had a mischievous grin on her face for a slight moment before her stomach made a noise.. She hadn't realized how long it had been since she last ate.  Kate then looked Paris and was about to just motion for him to follow, she was hungry regardless.

Well!  That hadn't been all that bad.  He'd done some fairly simplistic reading and it seemed to suffice for her.  He likely could have pressed it further, but she called a halt and he would hardly argue with that!

"Yes, sir!"

This would be a first for him, interacting with a Pilot in anything but a strictly instructor-to-student capacity.  There were no sharing of meals in the ATC between Pilots and candidates.  Nobody was taking a candidate out to dinner there, certainly not a Pilot.  It was indicative of this entire promotion—here he was expected to be useful, a contributor.

"May I ask where we're going, sir?"
