"What? It has to have a name. And, apparently it does. It's Duck the platypus!"

"Ha, I guess it is."  If anyone were to look in his apartment, they wouldn't see it.  It was still hidden, tucked away on the top shelf of a closet, all the way in the back.

"Well, I'll just have to see about making you a friend for it. Since you were so sad you missed out on the ones my mom made. And I'll make sure to present it to you in front of some attractive girl."

"Hey, chicks dig the cute stuff.  Especially when you're manly like me."

"Oh, right. Because you are very manly right now." Alaric gave him a pointed look, propped up in his hospital bed, "Nothing says masculine like an assless gown."

"Bullet holes are very manly."

Back on that subject, but he was okay now.  Hmm.  Okay was the wrong word.  He didn't want to strangle anyone, and that was an improvement.  These weren't the first bullet wounds on his body, but they were by far the most memorable, and the deadliest.  It had been close at times, really close.

"See, you should have had me around. I seem to be good at attracting both bullet holes and Raley." Alaric gave a strained laugh, not really enjoying that topic of conversation, "Well, as soon as they let you out, I'm sure you can go to a bar and show them off for some girls. Civilians always find scars hot."

Or so he was told. Alaric had no idea.

"Hell yeah, that's the best part of gettin' injured in the line of duty."  They'd spin some kind of story to explain all this, one that didn't involve a Pilot going rogue or whatever Raley had done.  Cross should come out looking good regardless.  Taking bullets for the good of the country and all that.

"See, there you go. Pie and scars. What's not to love?" How had he ended up in this situation? He had come here to...well, okay, that part was still fuzzy. Mostly rub in what a dick Raley was and here he was cheering up one of the few people Alaric truly hated.

"They have to owe you after that bullshit with the terrorists." Alaric's hand went up to his shoulder absently, fingering the bullet scar there.

Cross made a face, exactly the kind he'd make after tasting something bitter.  "Don't remind me, and you're damn right they owe me after that.  You too.  That was shit."

Yeah, it still bothered him, even now.  Even sitting in a hospital bed.  He didn't like himself for that.  He felt like he should have risen above it or something.

"Yeah. I was so fucking jazzed I had finally hit a big one, ya know?" Alaric frowned, glancing off to the side of Cross's bed, hand curled into a fist, "Instead there was that picture and the rumors and the Royal's get front page."

Alaric sighed, shaking his head, "I'm letting it go. Letting it go. I keep hoping if I say that enough, it will come true."

Cross laughed, and there was at least a little bit of humor in it.  "I ain't never letting go of it man.  I know that sounds bad.  I think that'll prick at me my whole life."

He knew himself well enough to know that.  He wouldn't be angry about it forever, but it'd always fester some resentment in him.

"I know what you mean. It's just such...balls." Alaric snorted, standing and moving toward the window, wanting to move a little. He hated that whole thing. Not just the fact that he had gotten shot, that they had lost all the credit. The worst was that picture, the shame and violation of having that shot of him plastered across newspapers.

"I did get a pretty wicked scar out of it though."

"That's the spirit.  Just make up a story for it.  No one has to know the official story of how it got there."  Now the real story, that would be one impressive tale.  They weren't allowed to utter it of course.

"Yeah, but I can't think of a cooler one than killed some terrorists like a badass and saved the hostages. I mean, everything else is such a down grade." Not that it mattered. Alaric wasn't really in the habit of trying to impress people and there were very, very few people that he would even show the scar too.

Cross shrugged.  "We can come up with something.  Something cool.  Something about Edanith.  People can't get enough of Edani terrorist stories."

"I've never been though. Think that will be a problem?" Alaric grinned, moving back to the chair by the bed, "I've always wanted too. All that wilderness and sun and stuff."

"Pfft, no.  Just make up some crazy shit!"  He returned Alaric's grin.  "The more epic the better.  I never been either, but just pick a rumor and run with it."

Half of what the public knew about Edanith was bullshit anyway.  Hell they'd be doing the nation a service by perpetuating the propaganda.

"Ooooh. I got in a like...gun fight with some slavers or something. Like a quick draw in the movies. And like, shot him in the heart or something. Or does that lack the heroic edge I need?"

"No no, you're onto something.  The slavers thing, that's a good one.  They love that stuff."  Cross started to get into the fantasy himself.  "And there has to be captives, and we freed them."
