She tried to force herself to calm as Elaros nuzzled against her; she didn’t want his gesture to be poorly received, but she knew her own anxiety was bleeding through the contact. She gave him a smile and squeezed his arm lightly, hoping the affection and gratitude would override any negative emotion that may be playing at the edges of her communication.

Be safe, she urged silently when the guard returned, reaching up to cup his jaw in her palm for a moment as she met his eyes earnestly. She tried for another smile. I will see you soon.

Reluctantly, she stepped back, breaking the physical connection between them. She could still read ambient emotion—and even if she couldn’t, that look from his guard would likely have been something she’d notice. As she turned to head back in the direction they’d come, she reached out to brush her fingers lightly over the guard’s arm.

Thank you for protecting him, she projected, with as much goodwill and affection as she thought might be received. Aside from the captain and Elaros himself, she hadn’t actually spoke directly with any of his crew—but she thought she understood enough of the culture on this ship to attempt to assure this drakkon that she wasn’t trying to steal all of Elaros’s attention.

One last glance back over her shoulder, then she picked up her pace as she made her way back down the hall, making her way toward where she’d left the Mirage. She just had to hope some part of this plan would work.

“Alright. This may feel…strange. It’s an old spell, old magic. Try not to let it bother you too much,” Lynn warned, before she let her eyes slide closed and began chanting—first in ancient Serenian, then in something like traditional Adelan. The chant was fairly basic: protection, warning, safety. But she’d found that repetition in multiple languages often helped to solidify a spell’s intent.

At least it did for her. She wasn’t a natural-born mage, all her magical talent had been picked up through centuries of study. She honestly had no idea if that was how it was supposed to work, but that had always been what worked for her.

Hopefully it would work in this strange new world she’d woken in.

Pink found herself giggling incredulously as she watched him work. “I’ll have to take your word for it,” she said with a crooked grin. “I’ve never seen one of those either.”

She felt the mild increase in temperature and gave a soft noise of approval from low in her throat, closing her eyes as she let the “water” wash over her. “I know you’ve got this whole ice king vibe going on, but you can turn that up a bit. I’m used to high temperatures.”

She blinked water off her lashes to look at him, head tilted so she could pull her hair over one shoulder and card her fingers through it. She swore she felt herself getting cleaner despite the lack of soap or scrubs.

Seexa could only croon and nod in encouragement as Torien took a bite of his own meal, her mouth quite occupied. She did manage something of a smile in return for his own, but when he told her to hold still she furrowed her brow in confusion.

She tried to ask what was wrong, but her mouth was full. She managed to swallow a downright inhuman bite, but by then he'd swiped the ketchup from the corner of her mouth. She found herself giggling as he showed it to her.

"Guess I...don't have much practice...with table manners," she laughed quietly, giving him a sheepish but happy shrug. "Here."

Stuffing the rest of the burger into her mouth--stretching her jaw far too wide to do so, but so quickly that it was difficult to catch--she sorted through the synthpaper bag and came up victorious with a scrap of a material she couldn't name, but which shimmered slightly and bore a cartoonish logo.

She took Torien's hand and used the napkin--wrapper? Honestly, she wasn't sure--to wipe the dollop of condiment away. Chirping, pleased with herself, she looked up at him and squeezed his fingers lightly in hers. "Better?"

"I--"

Annabelle groaned, pitching sideways as the world spun wildly around her. That had been a lot of magic, and ever since her last escape attempt her inhibitor had kept her operating at a fourth of her usual power, maybe even less. It was a shock to her system--quite literally--and in the aftermath her stomach churned and her vision blurred.

"I'm...fine," she managed to grind out, struggling to raise her head and meet his eyes.

Whoa...

"You're a live wire," she noted vaguely, gesturing almost drunkenly toward the skitterings of light that had taken up residence on his skin. "You look like...a night sky..."

She blinked, struggling to focus her attention, her vision, focus anything. "I--I didn't...kill anybody?" Her voice was tiny, pleading, and though the blue of her eyes was still electric as she stared up at him, there was a threat of tears behind them. She was tired, hurting, and now magically drained, but that was the only real question she could form. "Please tell me...I didn't kill anybody..."

Seexa smiled sheepishly at him, still dripping tank water from the ends of her hair as she cocked her head. “I’m glad…you don’t regret it.”

She started a bit when he laid his hand over hers, still unused to touch. But she adjusted quickly, unfolding her fingers from around each other so she could let her fingertips press lightly against the cool metal.

When he offered her the burger, she found herself leaning toward the smell of the food before her brain caught up with her. She sat back again quickly, but nodded. “Yes please.”

Cautiously, she took the proffered food and lifted it to her nose, sniffing curiously before she took a careful bite—a surprisingly delicate bite, considering the vigor with which she’d attacked the earlier steaks.

Her already wide eyes widened a bit further. “Oh…” She whipped her head around to stare at Torien. “That’s good!”

The shout made her raw throat ache, but she didn’t even care. Grinning, she took another bite of the burger, more enthusiastic this time, chirping and crooning happily all the while.

Seexa trailed after him, moving in some awkward combination of a shuffle and a waddle—but at least she was waking on her own! She hovered a moment, but clambered into place when he patted the “seat” beside him. She sniffed curiously at the unearthed burger, sitting with her shoulder just barely touching his.

“You are.” She dipped her head so she could meet his eyes and repeated seriously, “You are free, Torien. And…I only am because you’re strong.”

She smiled gently and let her shoulder press a little more firmly against his for a brief moment. “…Thank you. I know I already—you didn’t…have to come back for me. She might…she might not have been able to hurt you if you just left…”

She sighed and let her head drop forward a bit, webbed fingers laced tightly in her lap. “Thank you for coming back for me…Chrome Warrior.”

“Right?” She tipped her head back to let the water stream over her face, leaning back until she could feel Kayse’s presence behind her, hovering there a moment, then stepping forward under the full cascade of water again.

“Can’t say I know anything about physics cores, but this is definitely one of the swankiest showers I’ve ever stood in, real or otherwise.” She glanced back over her shoulder at him. “See anything we can use to scrub off? Or are we just meant to stand here and hope the water is real enough to get the job done?” she chuckled lightly.

Seexa managed to wrangle the sudden anger back under control and took a careful step back from the tank, though her breath was still coming more harshly than was strictly necessary. She knew she needed the damned thing, but…

She just hated it.

“Hm?” Torien’s question reminded her of the present situation and she looked to the synthetic foodstuff. “Oh. Um…yes,” she admitted with a small smile. “I could eat more…”

She cocked her head curiously in Torien’s direction. “That…what he called you. Chrome Warrior. What does…that mean?”

“Pins and needles,” she repeated with a rough, quiet laugh and a nod. She’d heard the expression before, but had never really had any basis for comparison. Until now, apparently.

She twitched a bit at the foreign feeling of fabric against her skin when the cloak was draped over her shoulders, but quickly adjusted to hold it closed over her chest. Still moving carefully, adjusting to her new center of gravity, she turned to see the crooked and leaking tank Crem indicated and frowned.

“I…hate…that thing,” she rasped quietly, glaring at it. Logically, she knew it needed to be fixed—she would need to be in water again sooner rather than later, most likely. But just looking at it, seeing from the outside how confining it was, how limiting, her entire world

Seexa hissed at the tank, lips drawing back over sharp teeth in a snarl. “I hate it,” she spat, still glaring at the thing as though it was a sentient creature that might retreat under her gaze.

“…I don’t think that creature is the kind of thing you can just “give a good clonk on the head”,” Lynn murmured. She didn’t want to scare her passenger, but she also didn’t want her to potentially face whatever that thing was unprepared.

Attempting to lighten the mood just a bit, she added with a chuckle, “But I could certainly give it my best. Here.” She held her hands out, palms up. “Place your hands over mine, and repeat what I chant, okay?”

By the time she reached the shower to turn the water on, she was left in just her underwear, and Kayse was undressed only a few steps behind her. She turned, leaning against the smooth glass of the shower and simply looking at him for a moment, eyes wandering curiously over his form.

She hadn’t exactly been able to take a look before, after all.

The slight flush to her cheeks warmed further as he began stripping off his pants, and she took a fortifying breath before doing the same and letting her panties drop to the bathroom floor—which matched the rest of the suite, designed to look like they were standing on a whirling galaxy of color and light.

Keeping her voice even, she reached back to place her hand under the water. “Feels real,” she noted blithely before stepping into the shower, leaving the glass door open behind her.

I can do this.

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this!

Forcing herself to ignore the pain in her ankle and the churning in her stomach, Annabelle popped up in the brief break in firing that Seandyr had afforded them and threw one hand out toward their attackers, the other reaching up above her head into the sandstorm.

And she become a lightning rod. The electricity in the air coalesced around her up-thrust arm, crackling along her nervous system visibly, blue sparks dancing down her spine and along the lines of her limbs, then exploded outward from her outstretched fingertips. The sparks hit their targets one at a time, a cascade of blue-white magic that created a brief live-wire circuit from Annabelle to the mercenaries and back.

She curled her fingers into her palm and yanked her hand back with a cry, ripping the circuit apart in a blast of ground lightning so quick that it actually caused a small clap of thunder. She collapsed backward, just barely able to catch herself on her free hand before she hit the red earth, panting heavily.

"You...okay?" she managed to rasp in her companion's general direction. She hadn't been aiming any magic in his direction, but a move like that was almost impossible to pull off with real precision. She just hoped any backlash from it hadn't hit him worse than his physiology could take.

[[Whoops! Sorry lol :-X]]

"Well." Lynn sighed, running a hand back through her hair in a way that mussed the dyed streaks into a muddle mess for a few moments before she shook her head and they settled back into place. "Good news: we know that there's something on the ship besides us. Bad news: we probably have to hide in the panic room and hope autopilot can get us to real help."

It was the kind of flippant comment that one might initial assume was a joke, but she said it so seriously that it left no doubt her ship did in fact have some sort of panic room.

She was shaking slightly, but she gave him her best attempt at a firm nod as she tried to quickly process the information he was giving her. "I--I can--" She licked her lips, cleared her throat, and tried again, "I don't know how precise I can get in this storm--the electricity in the air fucks with my magic--but I can definitely overload batteries. I could even make a rough circuit, if you're using electric rounds."

She glanced sideways at him, then added with the barest hint of a wry smile at the corners of her lips, "If you want me to share my juice, you might get zapped." She eyed the bony ridges on his form that seemed to be redirecting the ambient energy in the charged storm, then added with a shrug that was definitely trying too hard to be casual, "Though it seems like you can take it."

"Mmm... That, and I have absolutely no idea how to reset this thing," Pink said with a small chuckle as she waved her hand in a vague gesture toward her own torso. With a soft groan of reluctance, she finally pushed herself up and off of his lap--shuddering delicately as they slid apart-- and got her feet back under her just a little shakily.

A slight flush painting her neck and cheeks, she fussed with her hair for a moment as though that might do anything to fix her clearly sex-rumpled appearance and glanced back toward where Kayse had indicated the shower. She took a few steps toward it, then paused by the chair to glance down at him sidelong.

Ah, what the hell. She was already late.

"Well?" She cocked her head and smiled. "You gonna join me?"

Without waiting for an answer, she pulled her shirt off over her head and let it drop to the floor behind her as she headed into the suite's bathroom, shimmying out of her pants along the way.

“I can’t—“ Annabelle started again, but then his arm was braced against her shoulder, snapping her out of her own head and drawing her attention to his face as his visor cleared and she actually met his eyes for the first time. She tried to force herself to breathe, to focus on what he was saying. She wouldn’t kill anyone, the suits were too efficient, this was fine, it was fine

One of their attackers started shouting, talking to…Phylips? She had to assume that was the bounty hunter. Her eyes widened slightly—someone was dead, but she hadn’t been the one to kill him. That was…

“Hey.” Without thinking, she leaned forward into his arm braced against her shoulder, bumping her head lightly against the side of his helmet. “They attacked. You fought back.” She hesitated, then repeated his words from earlier in a murmur: “Monsters don’t kill out of fear or defense. Right?”

She had no idea what she was saying, why she was saying it. Clearly he’d known this Trenk—and honestly she didn’t know why she cared how he felt.

But, despite being the person who was going to drag her back to TRIM, he’d also been the first person she could remember who told her that her magic, her panic, didn’t make her a monster.

She leaned away quickly, peering out cautiously around the edge of their shelter, then glanced back to him.

“You land the shots, I make them hurt, right?”

The soft, startled noise he made when his new hand came into contact with her skin made Seexa start in turn, looking up at him with eyes even wider than normal as concern flashed across inhuman features. Had she hurt him, somehow?

But no. No, he seemed fine. He even smiled at her, an expression she returned breathlessly, nodding. The feeling of cool metal against her skin was…different, somehow, with his new prosthetic. Smoother, maybe? Perhaps warmer? As though this metal was more capable of retaining what little heat it could glean from her body.

She gave her head a little shake, putting it from her mind for the moment as she tried a few more steps, bringing her flush against Torien as she gripped his shoulder with one hand to keep her balance. “This is still…so…weird,” she giggled—actually giggled. It was a rough sound, clearly unpracticed, but the happy glint of her dark eyes made the emotion behind it unmistakable.

She glanced down at herself again, wiggling webbed toes against the floor. “I wonder…how long,” she mused, almost to herself. She glanced up into Torien’s face again. “It all feels…new. Sort of…buzzing?”

She wasn’t sure how to put the odd, tingling sensitivity of her new legs into words, or if she even needed to. Leaning a little more heavily into her friend, she glanced back over her shoulder at Crem, vaguely remembering Torien had told him to collect a cloak. “You’re a…a doctor, right?”

And he’d seemed to understand something about her. Or at least, something about what she was supposed to be. Maybe he’d have a better idea of what was going on.

Lynn paused for a moment, something behind her eyes going dark. Then she gave her head a little shake and shot Serina another quick smile.

“Yeah, I’d heard that. About the Fey blood, I mean. Fascinating. There!”

She turned to the dwarf with the written incantation in her hand, holding it out. “Go over that a few times, and when you feel like you’ve got it down, we can get started. I can help with some pronunciation, if you need it.”

She glanced around at her little makeshift pentagram and nodded to herself. “It should do…”

It would have to.

Maya squeezed back when he took her hand, but otherwise kept her presence as unobtrusive as possible as Elaros led her down the statue-lined hall. The emergency lighting washed the pastels of her skin and hair into deeper, bolder shades, and her eyes flickered a bit as they occasionally reflected the light.

She’d never been in a situation like this; she wasn’t a combatant, and while she’d had a few close calls in The Mirage—that was partially how she’d gotten here after all—she’d never come so close to real conflict before. Though she did her best to keep her emotions stable, there were little flickers of trepidation and anxiety that would trickle through the contact of Elaros’s hand over hers every so often.
