Edanith Characters / Nina Clay, The Weird Horse Girl
« on: November 07, 2019, 08:40:41 am »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Eponine "Nina" Clay
Age 23
Gender Female
Species Ostensibly Human
EthnicityEdani
Height 5'9"
Orientation Heterosexual
Occupation Horse Trainer
Residence Second Chances Horse Ranch (just outside the city of Tynova)

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Nina has chestnut brown hair with hints of red when exposed to sunlight--which happens frequently, considering she spends a majority of her time working outdoors under the Edani sun. Her skin bears a near constant nut-brown tan, and despite her youth there are both sun and laughter eyes around her bright blue eyes.

Personality
Nina is, and always has been, the Weird Horse Girl(TM). Though she grew up in one of the "smaller" megacities (at least as far as she is aware), she's never really been comfortable in urban spaces, and much prefers the wild vastness of Edanith's rurality and frontier, dangerous as they may be. Around people of a two-legged persuasion she can be a bit awkward and sort of rough around the edges, but it's usually clear that she means well, even if she occasionally puts her foot in her mouth.

Magic/Abilities
Beastspeaking: this gift applies mainly to equine creatures, but Nina also has a passing understanding with some cats and even dogs, on occasion.

Though she does actually come by this gift naturally, it was amplified by Mother.

Nina is also incredibly fast, with insane amounts of stamina (again, thanks to Mother), though she's never really needed to tap into this particular strength so she's not entirely aware of it.

She is actually descended from an equine skinwalker, though she doesn't know it; Mother just sort of reawakened the dormant genes to allow her to have such increased speed and stamina. Though Nina will never be a shapeshifter herself, she's not exactly all human either.

Relationships
Her parents, Isolde and Deanna; her employers at Second Chances; any return customers/visitors she happens to strike up a conversation with; and of course the horses on the ranch.

History
To the best of Nina's knowledge, she grew up in one of Edanith's "smaller" megacities, adopted by an older but very kind couple: Isolde and Deanna Marsh. Despite the beauty and culture of the place, and how much she loved her mothers, however, she always felt just a little stifled--so when the chance came to enter an internship program at a working and therapeutic horse ranch just outside Tynova, she leaped at the opportunity.

And she just sort of...never left. The couple who ran the program were impressed with how easily she took to the work, and when her three month internship was up, they offered her a job, which she happily accepted. She still goes home to visit her parents on occasion, but she'd quite happy in her current position.

Nina never actually learned the name of the "mysterious benefactor" who allowed her to take the internship--the letter just arrived on their doorstep one day soon after she'd found the application for Second Chances.

This benefactor was, of course, not only Nina's saving grace in this instance, but in fact the reason for her existence at all. Mother created the young woman in her lab and left her in the foster system on Edanith when she was four, and has kept an eye on her since.

Aedolis Characters / Kaidyn Blythe, Pilot Echo
« on: November 02, 2019, 07:58:45 pm »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Kaidyn Blythe
Age 24
Gender Male
Species Human (?)
EthnicityAedolian
Height 6'2"
Orientation Pansexual
Occupation Pilot
Residence Haviah

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Much as he might wish to, Kaidyn has never exactly been the kind of person to "blend in": quite aside from his height and the general bulk of his frame, he's always been a little...eye-catching, especially against the typical grays and browns of Haviah's architecture, what with the bright red hair and red-violet eyes.

Despite this, Kaidyn is a surprisingly approachable person, with a relatively easy smile and a face that has been generally described on more than one occasion as "kind" if not necessarily conventionally "handsome". He is rarely seen out of uniform, but when he is he tends to dress in nondescript, comfortable attire in monotone colors.

Personality
As it was to many, the Pilot Candidacy program was not kind to Kaidyn, though it shows itself surprisingly rarely. For the most part, though he can be a little stoic, he's actually quite soft and friendly, if given the chance.

This is not to say that he's naive or a pushover, however. Kind people are not born that way--they are forged in adversity with a core of steel, and Kaidyn exemplifies it well. He turned his energy toward making an effort to be kind after the abuses he suffered as a Candidate, rather than pass the abuse on.

Magic/Abilities
Like all Pilots, Kaidyn is a psychic. Other than that, he really doesn't think he has any particular special abilities, outside of what he learned or was beaten into him through Candidacy.

Of course, this isn't exactly true. All of Mother's children are extraordinary, in their own ways (or rather the ways she made them to be so); for Kaidyn, that means a strange and delicately balanced push-and-pull with some latent genetics. Back when dragons were still fully biological creatures, they sometimes crossbred with other races: many, many, many generations down the line, Kaidyn was born with dormant draconic heritage.

Not even Mother is entirely sure what he will be able to do with the cocktail of magic and science she used to both awake and then subsequently repress these genes, but Kaidyn tends to run a little...hot.

Relationships
Born and raised in Haviah's lowest levels, Kaidyn has never really had much family to speak of.

Perhaps surprisingly, his closest and--strangely--most fulfilling relationship is with the dragon who chose him at the age of eighteen, a silver and gray creature called Viirys with an amalgam of scales and biomechanical metal plating covering his body, as well as one fully cybernetic front leg on the right side, and a small, blue reactor core embedded in his chest.

Viirys treats Kaidyn with a surprising amount of respect and, rarely, even affection. A dragon's affection is a strange and difficult thing, of course, but Kaidyn does appreciate it when it happens.

History
Kaidyn was born a street urchin, and as such never really had many close relationships growing up, or even too much of a concern save for survival from day to day--Mother didn't really see much need to keep Kaidyn with her after her enhancements were made, so she simply dumped him back where she'd found him on the streets of Haviah, memories of his brief time in her lab completely blanked.

So perhaps it was by design, but as far as Kaidyn is concerned he was recruited to the Candidate program seemingly by sheer luck at the age of thirteen, when an attempt to pick someone's pocket got him caught by an off-duty Pilot.

Kaidyn advanced through the stages of Candidacy quickly, and made Pilot at the age of eighteen. He has only been a Pilot Echo for several months.

Cancer Characters / Subject 82641, Test Tube Mermaid
« on: October 27, 2019, 08:11:45 pm »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Designation Subject#82641. Prefers to go by "Seexa"
Age Unclear, young adult
Gender Female
Species Artificial Merfolk
Ethnicity Unclear
Height Nearly 5' when standing (her legs bend awkwardly and remove some potential height); with tail, about 8.5' long
Orientation No idea
Occupation Test Subject/Exotic Trinket
Residence Cancer's black market

[credit to Inkscribble and Dolldivine: this game]

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Subject 82641 is almost entirely green from head to tail, though in varying shades. Her body is covered in tiny scales, even her humanoid upper body--save for the thin webbing between her fingers--though they are so small and flexible so as to feel almost like skin to the touch. Her "base coat" color is an earthy green, lightest around her face and darkening in a steady gradient down her body to the tip of her tail. A pattern of darker, bluish green markings cover her back, arms, face, and tail as well--these markings are actually bioluminescent, glowing softly when in darkness.

Though at first glance her face appears fairly human, on closer inspection 82641 is clearly "other": her eyes are too big, and entirely black. Her nose is almost reptilian more than humanoid, and when she opens her mouth she reveals sharp, serrated teeth from her canines back. Her hair is black with streaks of the same green and blue-green that covers her body, and sometimes moves independently of the water flow around it--it's not actually "hair" at all, but rather hundreds of incredibly thin "barbels", sort of like a catfish's whiskers.

Technically, she is also an amphibious creature. Though she's never actually experienced this, 82641 can theoretically call on her DNA of Old Earth's mermaids to trade her tail for legs: her tail would split in two, the excess essentially drawn back into her flesh to form legs, and the gills along her rib cage would temporarily seal themselves.

This is an emergency-only survival mechanism however, and cannot be sustained for very long--a day at most.

(With her legs, she looks something like this; credit to Tony Diterlizzi, official Spiderwick Chronicles artwork)

Personality
It's rather hard to tell the personality of a creature kept eternally behind class. 82641 seems to have a natural curiosity for the world around her, and when she was first left on Cancer she would smile and attempt to interact with the people who came to gawk.

After a few months though, she has become subdued and wary, mostly curled up in the corner of her tank, avoiding angering anyone or drawing unwanted attention as best she can.

Magic/Abilities
Bioluminescent: 82641 is basically her own nightlight! She doesn't exactly need it though, as she can see fairly well in darkness, and can even navigate totally blind with only minimal issue.

Fae glamour: as her faerie DNA is severely diluted, 82641 doesn't have a particularly firm graft of this ability. She cannot change her appearance, but she can sort of charm people, capture their attention and hold it even against their better judgement--though only for a few moments, maybe a minute or so.

Hypothetically, her scales and skin secrete a natural healing agent, an incredibly weakened and diluted version of the healing "siren's tears" of ancient Earth. As with her amphibious ability to trade tail for legs, this is never something she's really explored.

On the more mundane side of things, 82641 has very sharp teeth and claws.

Relationships
None.

History
82641 has no memory of any life she may have had before Cancer other than being kept in a reasonably roomy tank that was consistently either in total darkness or surrounded by bright light and near blindingly white walls. Occasionally she would catch a glimpse of a figure in all this brightness, but then the injection would come and she would quickly lose consciousness, only to wake in darkness once again.

Well, not total darkness. 82641's own bioluminescence was sublimated with a few glowing, flickering machines around her tank, on occasion. These machines sometimes showed pictures, moving images of people and places that she didn't recognize, but somehow felt were important: a pair of siblings performing in Aedolis, a young Pilot Candidate experimenting with the limits of a new cybernetic arm, a man surrounded by red earth, eyeing a target through the sight of his sniper rifle.

She didn't know the names of these places or people of course, not at first. But she listened, she watched, and she learned, bits and pieces at the very least.

Language was not quite so difficult as she expected to pick up, and soon enough she could talk to herself in a variety of tongues. Perhaps that is what sent her to Cancer--she can never be sure, but one cycle of dark and light she attempted to speak with the figure in the corner of her eye, and the next thing she knew she was waking up in her tank in completely alien surroundings.

She's been passed around the black market every since--something like four or five months, she's not entirely sure. She's never in one place for very long, as no one seems entirely sure what to do with her.

Subject#82641 is a bottle-made mermaid, a creature genetically spliced together from human, fish, and ancient merfolk DNA and magic. She seems to have been a sort of whim on Mother's part more than anything else.

If she has any greater plan for her on Cancer, it is as of yet unclear.

Edanith Characters / Elinaya Whitewood, Blood Mage
« on: October 22, 2019, 11:32:47 am »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Elinaya "Ella" Whitewood
Age 21
Gender Female
Species Human
Ethnicity Edani
Height 5'6"
Orientation Heterosexual
Occupation Military Mage-in-Training
Residence Tynova

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Ella has been told all her life that she has her father's eyes--a deep, oceanic blue with a ring of subtle green around the pupils--but that she really is the spitting image of her mother. Naturally fair, she tans easily in the Edani sun, and her chestnut brown hair gains streaks of red when exposed to the sunlight for any lengthy period of time.

She's of a pretty average height and build: not really tall or short, neither slender nor bulky, with subtle curves and comparatively long legs. Her features lean toward "thin", but don't cross quite all the way into "sharp".

Personality
Ella is a bit snobbish, a bit spoiled, but under it all she really does mean well. She grew up watching her uncle's passion for serving Edanith in whatever way he could, and though her own training was never quite so severe, she truly did want to emulate him in just about everything he did.

She firmly believes in a mage's duty to the people, but she doesn't exactly shy away from the near reverence that most of the populace bestows on people with her gifts either.

Magic/Abilities
Ella's abilities are very niche, but very powerful. She is a blood mage, which essentially means that she can connect to, control, and manipulate the blood--her own or others.

She mostly uses this as a sort of augmentation of the more "traditional" magic she can do, allowing her to cast spells that she would never have been able to perform with just her raw ability.

But, if pressed, she can literally control the blood in another's body; she could control multiple people, with a little effort, though of course she's never actually tried to do anything of the kind. She doesn't even know it's something she's capable of.

Relationships
Layla Strausbury nee Whitewood: mother, deceased
Victor Strausbury: Father, MIA
Lee Whitewood: maternal uncle, living

History
Ella's mother agreed to undergo some sort of "testing" by a scientist that her uncle knew as Dr. McCallan when she was pregnant...which probably gave Ella her "blood affinity", which is a kind of magic that was thought to have almost entirely died out.

It is also very possible that the experiments are what caused her mother to die in childbirth, but no one really talks about that.

Aside from the chaotic first few days of her life, when Lee was scrambling to find people to help him care for her and get them both set up in a nice place to live, her childhood was rather typical.

She entered official military training at sixteen, though she has yet to see active duty. She mostly works with her uncle around the city, if she works at all.

Edanith Characters / Lee Whitewood, Mordecai
« on: October 22, 2019, 11:31:06 am »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Maliek "Lee" Whitewood
Age 37
Gender Male
Species Human
Ethnicity Edani
Height 5'11"
Orientation Heterosexual
Occupation Military-Trained Mordecai
Residence Tynova

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Lee is fairly tall and definitely broad, incredibly physically fit both by necessity and because exercise is one of the few stress reliefs that's really reliable in his life. The best word to describe him would probably just be solid.

His face almost doesn't seem to match the rest of his body, at least not entirely; he has surprisingly round cheeks and full lips, lending an air of youthfulness to his features which is helped along by the baby blue eyes and almost cherubic curly blond hair--though he tends to keep his hair cut relatively short in an effort to cut down on this impression.

Personality
Responsible and stoic almost to a fault, Lee isn't exactly the kind of guy you'd invite for a "fun night out". That's not to say he's all business all the time, just...mostly business most of the time.

Though he's not necessarily a standoffish sort of person, he's not really what you'd call friendly either. He's incredibly loyal to and protective of close friends and family, but it takes a bit of work be become included in that select number.

Magic/Abilities
Lee was living with his sister and her husband when Mother began experimenting on his pregnant sister; she didn't really mess with his genes, but she did do something that increased his field of influence a lot.

Of course he doesn't remember this; in fact, he doesn't even remember how small his mordecai field used to be in comparison.

Relationships
Firya and Veran Whitewood: parents, deceased
Layla Strausbury nee Whitewood: sister, deceased
Victor Strausbury: brother-in-law, MIA
Ella Whitewood: niece, living

History
Lee had a typical Edani mordecai upbringing, along with his older sister Layla. Tragically, their parents--both also mordecai--died in a skirmish on the Edanith frontier when Lee was thirteen and Layla was nineteen; that same year, Layla married her mage partner, Victor.

Lee had trained informally with his sister for much of his childhood, but he entered official military training at fifteen...and then his only family, his sister, died a year later in childbirth, just months after her husband was declared MIA on a mission he'd insisted his pregnant wife stay home from.

Layla left Lee pretty much the sole guardian of his newborn niece, called Elinaya for their grandmother. He managed to hire a nanny and some other household help so he could still complete his training, but he was basically a single dad at sixteen, and raising his niece and serving his nation have been his whole life

The Libra / Did You Know Catnip Helps With Pest Control? [Paladienne]
« on: October 22, 2019, 10:49:38 am »
Addie took a different route home from school, trying to avoid the particular winding side street where she'd bumped into a cluster of classmates what felt like every day for the last week. It wasn't that she didn't like the, precisely, it was just that...

Well, they didn't seem to like her much.

She was an easy target; she knew that. She wore her emotions on her sleeves and cried far too easily. She almost didn't make it fun for people trying to get a rise out of, simply because it required so little effort to do so.

But it seemed that didn't stop them. She should probably come up with a new defense mechanism.

Hefting her shoulder bag a little bit up against her side, Addie paused and glanced around, trying to take stock of the twisting spires of silver and blue that surrounded her. Alright, she was familiar with this general area of the station--she had to be, it was the quickest route from her house to school and back--but she'd never been on this particular street before. She was pretty sure if she headed up another block or two, then took a right...

Or maybe it was left? Or would that just loop her around?

Bit her lip, Addie felt her steps begin to slow almost unconsciously as she realized her best option might be to backtrack and just go the way she usually did. But...she really didn't want to deal with those people today. Couldn't she get just one day?

The communicator in her pocket suddenly buzzed and she quickly pulled it out, blinking once as the iris scan unlocked the comm to her print and revealed a text from her mother:

Working late again. You can get yourself dinner, right? I'll see you in the morning.

Addie sighed, typing out a quick, affirmative reply before she pocketed the comm again and let her shoulder lean against the wall. Her bag was suddenly heavier, the buildings around her taller and brighter as her chest tightened, the threat of tears rising up behind her eyes.

Stop it, stop it, stop it. She hated doing this, hated that she never seemed to be able to stop or control it, no matter what she did.

She needed to get off the street. It just made things worse that she knew every random passerby would be able to see her stupid little breakdown. Sniffling, she hefted her bag again and hurried a little further down the street, eyes flicking around until she fuzzily recognized an "Open" sign for...some sort of cafe?

Didn't matter. She just needed to get off the street, just for a few minutes. Not even pausing to read the name, Addie darted inside and closed the door behind her, then leaned back against it, breathing in short, sharp little hiccups as she tried to fight down a new threatening wave of tears.

Wanderers and Independents / Lynn, Vampire Spacer
« on: October 22, 2019, 10:05:09 am »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Faolan ("Fallon") AKA "Lynn"
Age Kinda fuzzy: somewhere close to 3500, but has only been "awake" for 900ish years
Gender Female
Species Vampire
Ethnicity Old Earth Serenian/Libran
Height 5' 11"
Orientation Pansexual
Occupation Spacer
Residence Her ship, the Wild Rose

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Lynn is on the fairer side--at this point she can't really remember if she was born that way or if it happened after she was turned--and has matte black hair streaked through with pastel blue and bubblegum pink (hair dye is one of her favorite "new" technologies). She used to wear it long, long enough to reach the backs of her knees, but in recent years had kept it in an asymmetrical cut, longer in front and shorter in back.

Her features are sharp and clean, and her willowy frame is covered in deceptively lean muscle. She's always been taller than average, and has learned to use her height to her advantage; she barely even needs that slight aura of the "other" that vampirism provides in order to take command of a room.

Personality
If the years have been unkind to Lynn, she certainly doesn't show it. She is cheerful to the point of bubbly, and seems to genuinely enjoy people--or at the very least, a good conversation. She does however carry a bit of her age behind her eyes; she never comes across as cold or unfeeling, but she will occasionally take a step back and simply observe, watching the world spin around her as though she is not truly a part of it.

She also has the gods-awful habit of combining slang from the last couple millennia all together in one sentence mercilessly. She doesn't even try to stop it happening anymore.

Magic/Abilities
Lynn has all the typical abilities and weaknesses that come with vampirism: heightened senses, near-immortality so long as she keeps herself well-fed, a sensitivity to sunlight, and greater strength and speed than a regular human.

Of course Lynn was no spring chicken even two thousand years ago, and she's picked up a few odd hobbies and skills over the decades. She's quite accomplished with embroidery, and she can take out a target with a slingshot from over two hundred yards.

Relationships
No one who Lynn knew in her old life has survived to the present day.

History
[WIP]

Lynn was magically frozen millennia ago (at the age of 880ish), then thawed out and disenchanted by a group of scavengers just outside an Aedolis sphere with a combination of modern magitech a few years ago.

She's pretty sure it was an accident, and that they didn't mean to wake her up, but she can't be sure--they aren't exactly around for her to ask. After nearly three thousand years in stasis, she was absolutely starving, and when one of the scavengers took a shot at her, she attacked and drained all five of them mostly on instinct.

She still feels rather bad about that, but tries not to dwell on it too much. Besides, it's so much easier to get synthetic blood in this new world she's woken up do, she'll never have to worry about going hungry and losing control like that again.

Hopefully.

Libra Characters / Raven, Legacy Contract
« on: October 18, 2019, 10:53:21 am »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Raven Verns
Age 24
Gender Female
Species Human with fae ancestry
Ethnicity Libran
Height 5'5"
Orientation Bisexual
Occupation Shop Owner
Residence Libran trade district

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
As the rather cliched name might suggest, Raven has jet black hair with hints of blue and green to it that occasionally shimmer in the light. Her eyes are bright green, and her skin is naturally tanned and smooth, free of any blemish or mark--

Well. Save for the winding, inky black tattoo that starts on her right wrist and curves its way up her arm in a series of flowing, looping lines, almost like some sort of script, to end just passed her shoulder and just beneath her collar bone.

Of course she typically wears high collars and long sleeves, so most people don't see that.

Personality
Almost by necessity, Raven is a relatively open and friendly person. She knows her neighbors all by name, and even if they aren't necessarily friends, they are at least amiable with one another.

If left to her own devices, Raven would really prefer to curl up with some nice tea and a good book--paper or datapad, she doesn't much care which, though of course physical books are rarer and rarer nowadays. She likes her solitude and she likes quiet, but she's always willing to leave her mini-sanctuary in the back room of her shop to lend a helping hand when needed.

Magic/Abilities
Raven is a witch--she doesn't call herself a "mage", as she believes that implies some sort of internal power that she doesn't really have. Her magic comes from the world around her: plants, stones, even certain metals all have a distinct power, and Raven's real talent comes in knowing how to access and channel that power.

She doesn't exactly advertise these abilities, as they might be a bit too close to psionics for the government's comfort.

She has another power as well, a darker one, passed down in her bloodline since the days of Serendipity. She never speaks of it, and not even she truly understands what it's capable of.

Relationships
Her great-aunt Lucina is the only surviving member of her family. She raised Raven, and the young witch loves her very much.

Raven has a sort of...familiar that occasionally appears around the shop. A massive black bird with piercing eyes that seem far too intelligent. She never seems quite at ease when the raven is around though, and only refers to him as "Shade".

History
Raven has always assumed that her mother was drunk when she named her. That or just...feeling cruel.

She never really had the chance to learn which, because she hardly saw her mother as a child--or even well into her teen years, honestly. Valeria Verns never spent much time in the little magick shop that her aunt ran, and when she did visit it was always briefly. She never seemed to be able to stay in the same room with her daughter for longer than a few hours, and even those were always tense and awkward.

Lucina told Raven it was because she felt guilty. By necessity of a Contract made millennia ago, the Verns women were obligated to carry on their matrilineal line--but each Verns mother knew the curse that she would one day bring on her daughter, and each one of them dealt with the guilt different.

It was a logical enough explanation, but privately Raven always wonder if it wasn't just because Valeria blamed her daughter's existence for her own inevitable death.

A death that came was Raven turned eighteen, as it always must. Valeria had returned to the shop, to the tiny flat that Lucina and her daughter lived in above it, for the last time. And for the first time, when she told her daughter "I'm sorry", Raven actually believed her.

Raven has always wondered how the Shade knew when midnight really was out in the middle of the void, but somehow it did. Perhaps demons have a firmer way of marking time.

Regardless, her mother's death came the precise moment that Raven entered her eighteenth year; the binding mark of the Contract faded from Valeria's arm with her last breath, and with Raven's next she watched the tattoo appear on her own skin.

« on: October 17, 2019, 10:06:40 pm »
__________________QUICK STATS
Name Ava Everlight
Age 35
Gender Female
Species Human
Ethnicity Edani/Mutt
Height 5'4"
Orientation Heterosexual
Occupation Previously a research assistant, currently a medic
Residence A town called Reckless

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Ava is a rather nondescript woman at first glance; she's the kind of person who doesn't exactly catch the eye, but the more often one looks at her, the more you see her, the more intriguing she becomes. Though her features lean a bit toward "plain", there's something about her gray-green eyes, something behind the easy smiles and laugh lines that speaks of things that would have been better left unseen.

Her hair is thick, curly, and red, often pulled back simply under a bandanna. Like many Edani she is fair-skinned, though unlike her fellow countrymen she seems to have trouble getting any sort of a tan--she mostly just ends up "lobster red" under the heavy smattering of freckles whenever she spends too long in the sun.

Personality
Not exactly "bubbly", but bright and happy by nature, Ava likes people, and they tend to like her.

Despite this, she's somehow a rather solitary individual; she's lived in Reckless for almost eight years, and still no one in the small frontier town could really say that they know her. She's polite and friendly enough on the surface, and a skilled medic--that's all that really matters to most folks.

Sometimes Ava will be quiet, too quiet, contemplative, as though she's alone in a room even when surrounded by other people. Her eyes lose focus and she'll simply stop still wherever she is, lost in herself. It happens frequently enough that it has become a large part of how she relates to the world.

Most residents of Reckless have learned to identify and ignore this particular quirk; the only person who can snap her out of it is her young daughter.

Magic/Abilities
Though she has no magical or psychic skill to speak of, Ava is an incredibly skilled medic. She knows a great deal about both field medicine and more traditional medicine that might be practiced in a hospital.

Relationships
Val, her seven-year-old daughter. Her name is actually short of "Valkyrie", though neither she nor her mother really shares that much.

Val is a special little girl--and her mother would kill to protect her.

History
Ava is one of maybe three people currently alive in the universe who can claim that they escaped a close encounter with Mother without being directly mutated or otherwise "enhanced" by her.

She met the scientist--whom she only knew as "Dr. Molly Faern"--when she was twenty-five, just graduated from her second round of medical training and looking for a job. Dr. Faern was impressed both with her skill, and with Ava herself. She said that Ava was exactly what she had been looking for.

Ava always found it odd that she only said it after looking over a mandatory blood work-up...

She worked for Dr. Faern for nearly three years, mostly as a laboratory and research assistant, but occasionally helping out Molly with more personal errands or other tasks. They spend so much time together, and the genius scientist was so kind to her, always praising her skills and telling her that they would do great things together... She'd thought they were friends.

It became clearly and disturbingly apparent that they were not when, three years into the position, Ava stumbled upon Mother's hidden records, and she learned what "Dr. Faern" was really up to.

She tried to leave.

She was caught.

She woke up a few days later, knowing that Mother had done something to her but not sure what, and terrified. She made a second attempt at escape and this time succeeded--though in the years since she has always worried that it was a bit too easy.

It wasn't until she'd been free of Mother for a few weeks that Ava realized exactly what had been done to her. Her own genetics had been left alone; she was too old to be of use to Mother, of course.

But the baby that Mother had artificially inseminated her with was a veritable blank canvas.

Valkyrie was born roughly eight months later, and it was clear to Ava what had been done to her, at least partially. Gene splicing was always Mother's go-to experiment: she'd mixed avian DNA into Val's, and the girl was born with wings.

Residence Haviah

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Bronze skinned, with dark hair and eyes, Nova's sharp features give her a rather intense look at first glance--a bit too intense to be filed as classically "pretty", but a word that's typically used to describe her is "striking". Her height probably adds to the impression, and she's learned to carry herself in such a way that she can take command of the space she occupies almost by her presence alone.

Or she can fold herself into the shadows, and you would never even remember she was there. It's quite an intriguing dichotomy.

On a semi-technicality, Nova is not classified as a cyborg; however, she has a cybernetic arm and leg on opposite sides of her body (the left arm and the right leg). She also has more than the average number of implants: a general port at her temple, a translator as part of a cochlear implant, and a military-grade chip behind her left eye that allows her to see the world in all sorts of nifty ways.

Personality
Nova was born in a lower-middle caste, and she learned quickly to be shrewd, calculating, and never show exactly what she was feeling. Her psychic abilites did not fully manifest themselves until she was nearly seventeen, so she doesn't quite have the same "raised to the military" air that some of her fellow pilot candidates do. She tends to be a little less formal, and a lot less zealous.

This is not to say that she's entirely unapproachable; she may be a little standoffish, but she's not an unpleasant or unreasonable person, just a cautious one.

Magic/Abilities
When Nova was fifteen, Mother augmented her natural, rather weak psychic abilities to both strengthen them and give her the added skill of telekinesis.

Beyond these abilities, she is trained in the manner of every other pilot candidate, and has gained the skills therein.

Relationships
Her parents, Aaron and Viki Erinsri, and her younger brother Andreas. All three were moved up through the caste system when she completed her initial training, and now live in the upper levels of the city. She loves them, but doesn't see them often, and can't really say they're particularly close anymore.

History
Nova was drafted as a Pilot Candidate on the later end of the scale, having just turned twenty. Growing up in a lower caste, she'd mostly used her psychic abilities to help keep food on the table--occasionally that meant doing something a little on the "gray" side of legal, so when the Pilot recruiters first tracked her down she was pretty convinced she was going to prison. Or worse.

But no. It turned out what she'd always thought of as a minor talent, an odd "quirk" or "hunch" now and then, was actually a fairly formidable psychic gift. Apparently she'd caught the eye of someone among the Powers That Be--she never found out who--and they had recommended her for Candidacy.

Training was brutal. Nova lost all function in her left arm from a training accident within her first year, and was grafted a cybernetic replacement to join the one that replaced most of her right leg (though that was from an accident working in her mother's mechanic shop as a younger girl--it just got updated once she became a Candidate).

Despite the hardship, she was grateful for the opportunity. She saw her family less and less as her duties became heavier, more time consuming, but she knew that they were safe and happy, and that was all that mattered.

She's had three different mentors over the course of her training, and she's convinced that that is at least partially the reason why it's taken her so long to advance through stages, and why she's been stuck at Stage Three for nearly three and a half years. There was nothing wrong with any of her previous mentors, she just...has always had a bit of an issue with authority.

TRIM / Jailbreak, Part II: Electric Boogaloo [Daglobster]
« on: October 09, 2019, 11:59:33 am »
Annabelle's first attempt at escape had not gone well.

Honestly she couldn't even remember much of what had happened after the alarm system she'd been suppressing suddenly came back online--she'd badly misjudged just how much of her power she could use with the stupid TRIM chip embedded in her temple--and within thirty seconds she'd been tased unconscious and dragged back to her "dormitory".

At least, she assumed that was what had happened. Her memories of the first few days after that were a blur of white coats, bright lights, and a wider variety of pain than she'd ever really thought possible.

The next thing she could really remember was waking up in her hospital cot, one wrist cuffed to the bed, with one of the doctors standing over her, explaining that they had updated her chip. They had control now; without approval from a computerized control unit, Annabelle had no access to her powers at all.

It felt like losing a limb. She could feel the phantom tingles of electricity sometimes at the tips of her fingers or sparking behind her eyes, but the moment she reached for it, the feeling vanished.

In all of the five years since she'd been found and brought to TRIM, she thought that might be the most effective torture they'd come up with. It had been nearly two months of this, and even after enduring dozens of previous tests and experiments, she thought much longer of this might actually kill her.

Fight...

Annabelle sat up in bed, looking around the darkness of her tiny cell. That--that was a voice. A voice she didn't recognize. Where...?

Fight it, my child.

Her eyes widened as she realized the voice was inside her head. "Oh gods." She looked around, though now she knew it was useless. "What--what's going on?"

You must fight. It was a whisper, fuzzy and barely audible, almost like static. Cannot...much longer. Go now. Go while...doors are down.

Annabelle got the distinct feeling that there was more to the message than she was hearing, her brow furrowing in confusion as she tried to figure out exactly what the voice was trying to tell her. Perhaps she should have been more worried about anonymous voices in her head, but honestly? At this point, it barely even phased her.

And the voice wasn't completely unknown, somehow. Almost like a memory of a dream, something she couldn't quite grasp.

But she didn't have time--or honestly really the inclination--to prioritize that train of thought. "Go while the doors are down", what did that mean?

As if in answer to her thoughts, she saw the red glow of her door lock flicker, then blink to green, and heard the unmistakable snick of the automated lock turning open.

She was frozen on the bed, wide eyed and staring, for a long, elastic moment. Then she burst into movement, launching herself off the bed and racing for the door, barely pausing a moment once she'd cracked it open to check the hall before she darted out and began running for the far door, bare feet hardly making a sound against the cool tile.

She reached the door, fingers closing around the handle, and the harsh blare of an alarm suddenly ripped through the hall. She froze, terrified, memories of her last attempt racing through her mind--but it wasn't a door alarm, it was an emergency alert. Someone must have realized the door system was offline.

Go while the doors are down.

Alright. She could do this.

Either by miracle or by design, the path from Wing Alpha down to the southwest docking point was almost entirely clear of doctors and technicians. Annabelle had memorized the guards' routes from her last escape attempt and there should have been more people down here, but the emergency protocols had called them all to an upper level.

All but the two standing at the main door. Annabelle stopped dead once she caught sight of them, then ducked back around the corner and poked her head around again, more cautiously this time. Okay, there were only two of them, and they were probably distracted by the alarms. If she took them by surprise...

A sharp pain jolted through her head and she had to bite down on a cry, clenching her eyes shut as electricity surged through her blood--

Her eyes snapped open. Electricity.

She could feel her magic again.

Not knowing how long this would last, spurred onward by a surge of wild, giddy relief and joy, Annabelle dashed out into the hall and went barreling right for the guards, sparks jumping from her fingertips as she raised her hands and focused the energy down her arms and gather in her palms. If she could just toss a ball of electricity at them, it would be enough of a distraction for her to rush through, grab the first ship she saw and put this place far behind her.

The magic pulsed through her blood, surging into her hands, ready to be released. The guards were going for their weapons, but she was faster, throwing her power forward with a shoot as she charged directly toward the door between them.

Something happened. Something sharp and hot and dangerous that made both the chip in her temple and the core of sparks at the center of her magic protest painfully. The electricity sprang from her hands, hotter and fiercer than she'd intended, singeing the edges of her hospital-regulation scrubs, but she couldn't pull it back, could only watch in horror as the guards jerked and spasmed, then went limp, collapsing to the ground.

It didn't look they were breathing.

Annabelle felt the floor slide sideways beneath her feet, her stomach twisting sickeningly. Her steps slowed, vision pinpointing to the uniformed figures on the floor. Oh no. Oh no no no no no--

Focus! Another jolt of pain, this one actually drawing a cry from her lips. Run, now! I cannot maintain...fading.. will not be able to help you again.

"I'm sorry," Annabelle whispered as she ran through the door into the docking port, vision blurred with the start of tears. "I'm so sorry."

Official TRIM ships were all on the same wireless locking system, which was also down along with most of the doors in the facility. Annabelle ran for the first single person craft she saw, a generic security vehicle, and managed to both jump start the ship and slip her consciousness into the navigation system just long enough to input random coordinates before she felt her power begin to fade again.

A soft sob caught in her throat at the loss, but she tried to swallow it down, curving the ship toward the slowly opening docking door into open space. She punched forward, accelerating to max speed as quick as she could.

A ragged, hysterical laugh joined the muffled sob in her throat and she sank back in her seat. She had no idea where she was going, what it had cost, but she was out.

By the time the emergency at TRIM was under control and the patients counted, it had been nearly six hours since Annabelle's escape. Somehow, she was the only subject who had managed to utilize the chaos effectively, though there were plenty of other injuries from patients and subjects attacking the staff. Enough that the core staff couldn't mobilize quick enough to send someone after her.

"Call in one of asset recovery operatives," Annabelle's lead doctor, a psychic called Garth Farrow, ordered his assistant as they watched the security video of the young woman attacking the two guards. "One of our best--someone who isn't scared of a little lightning."

Solar System / S.O.S. [Daglobster] [M]
« on: October 06, 2019, 10:27:56 pm »
Ala'oran ships were a miracle of living technology. Like the species that created them, the ships were every so slightly telepathic, and learned their pilots' thoughts and impulses like an old friend would. Almost every surface of the control panel was touch-sensitive, meaning that just a few taps could set coordinates, adjust life support settings, and send a ripple of color through the biotech-luminescent outer hull all at once.

Even the smaller, personal transport crafts were really quite magnificent: Maya's in particular was quite lovely, if she did say so herself, sort of oblong in general shape but with flexible, finned wings and a curved little snub nose so the general shape of it was oddly reminiscent of a manta ray. A flying, bio-luminescent manta ray.

She always seemed to get dozens of questions about her ship pretty much everywhere she put in to port. She'd grown quite proud of it with each new explanation she had to give, and sometimes she thought that when she passed a hand over the touch-panel she could feel a happy little hum in response to the presence of her mind brushing against the ship's internal hardware.

But unfortunately, it needed fuel just like any other ship.

Fuel that she'd been forced to burn in a desperate chase from some unmarked ship--probably pirates, which she'd never had to deal with before and hoped she never would again.

The young spacer frowned as she pressed her palm lightly onto the touch-pad directly in front of the pilot's chair, getting a feel for how much fuel they had left.

Not a lot.

Okay. How close was the nearest planet? Or even a small station, anywhere she could refuel?

...Too far.

Fuck. Maya usually wasn't much for actual words, but she'd learned that one pretty early in her travels and had found it to be quite versatile. Fuck fuck FUCK!

Her ship buzzed and whined, a pulse of blueish green light flashing from bow to stern. The elegant wings rippled through the void, automatically curving them back around a few clicks as her telepathic control shorted and jumped around, confusing the navigation system.

A soft ding and a flickering yellow light above the viewing panel caught her attention. Her eyes widened as she realized the ship had set off its distress signal on its own. She hadn't even realized she was thinking about doing that.

A tiny, relieved smile curved at her lips and she patted the control panel lightly, sending a pulse of gratitude and what she hoped was reassurance from her thoughts.

Okay. This would be okay. They just had to be picked up before their fuel was burned out completely and her life support systems shut off. In about...

Six hours.

This was fine.

__________________QUICK STATS
Name Kianah "Pink" Ketras
Age 20
Gender Female
Species Human
Ethnicity Mutt
Orientation Bisexual
Height 5'2"
Occupation Mechanic/Racer
Residence Teinar

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Pink has earned her nickname from a very distinctive style; namely, black and hot pink moto-racing attire. Her jet black hair is decorated with streaks of pink, and she is almost never seen without a hot pink heart inked just below her left eye. While her skin is smooth and tan, her eyes almost echo albinism, as they are a pale pink as well.

Personality
Pink takes no s**t. From anyone.

Aside from that, she's rather outgoing and friendly--"spunky" is a word a lot of people use, though never in earshot.

Magic/Abilities
Pink is a naturally gifted tinkerer, and as far as she knows she's been doing it all her life. Taking things apart and putting them back together again, trying to see if she can make them better, faster, stronger.

Her gift from Mother is subtle, but useful. She is able to see three or four seconds into the future--though she has no idea of this, thinking she just experiences an absurd amount of deja vu. This little talent comes in particularly handy when there's a sharp turn coming up in a racing course, or if she realized just a moment too late that she shouldn't have taken that particular alley.

Relationships
Beatriz and Toryn, her aging parents (they had her much older than was typical)

History
((WIP))

Pink was born in the Earth's underbelly of Teinar, and she's never left it.

Literally. Unlike most of Mother's children, Pink was a...house call, so to speak. Mother came to her family when she was a child and offered her parents a deal: if little Kianah would take part in a harmless study, her family would be richly rewarded.

Despite the general lack of interest in luxury held by most residents of Teinar, the Ketras family took the deal. Kianah was taken to a small clinic twice a week for six months, where she was sedated for an hour, then taken back home.

She was so young that she has almost no memory of this "study" she took part in--she only knows it allowed her mother's mechanic shop to expand, meant that her parents could actually retire as they tiptoed closer to old age, and meant that her family was one of the few who could really be considered "well off" among pretty much everyone else she knew.

Of course, Pink isn't exactly proud of this, and she tries to keep it on the down-low; she runs her shop, books her races, and hopes people don't ask questions.

Questions and Suggestions / A Finicky Request
« on: November 02, 2017, 01:11:50 pm »
Hey!

Sooooo I'm terrible, and I apologize, I haven't been on here nearly as much as I like. However, I was wondering if it might be possible for an Inbox/Outbox system like the one in SotE to be implemented on RotE?

Maybe it's just me for some reason, but all my messages- even in the same conversation- are separated into like a different little box and it's growing kinda cluttered haha. It also just helps me personally to be able to reference what I said in a conversation, and for some reason I just haven't been able to find a way to do that.

Sorry if this request is just super nit-picky, feel free to ignore me!

__________________QUICK STATS
Name Annabelle McAlistair
Age 25
Gender Female

Occupation "Tech support"
Residence TRIM facility

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Annabelle has electric blue eyes and lightly tanned skin with auburn hair cut in a short, choppy style that frame her face, longer in front and shorter in back. She is of average height and build with a decent amount of curve to her figure, a majority of her height coming from her proportionately long legs.

Personality
She's...well, electric. Quick to anger, though her temper fades fast, and she seems to light up a room with a smile or a laugh. Annabelle loves people, though she's not a fan of close relationships and tends to keep people at a distance with biting humor if it feels like things are getting "too real".

Magic/Abilities
A lighting mage, though she doesn't seem to be particularly powerful. However, she has the rather unique ability to "link up" with major technological systems, allowing her to basically use herself as a sort of interface.

Mother has augmented her natural abilities, giving Annabelle the ability to not only sync up with technology but control the electricity in them remotely (which of course she doesn't realize she can do). Hypothetically, Annabelle could connect with the operating system of a spaceship and--hypothetically--someone could, through her, control it from hundreds of thousands of miles away; depending on her level of magical control, she could even use a connection with one system to "jump into" another.

Relationships
TBD

History
Annabelle is an amnesiac, having woken up in a small compartment of Thanatos Inc. five years ago and accidentally releasing a burst of magic that almost killed five people in shock and fear. It didn't take long for her to be carted off to TRIM, where she'd been ever since.

As one of Mother's children, Annabelle spent a majority of her childhood on Mother's spacecraft. Either because she was lying in wait for the perfect opportunity or because she simply couldn't think of a real use for her, Mother kept her on the ship until she was twenty before just blanking her memories and placing her on Thanatos.

Orientation Bisexual and polyamorous
Occupation Explorer and unofficial ambassador
Residence Wherever she happens to be

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Other than her coloring, she appears mostly human except for her ears, which end in distinct points and are long enough to sort of flop over. Maya has pale lavender skin and long, powder blue hair often worn in a myriad of tiny braids twisted around her head a few times and then falling down her back. Her eyes are slightly angular and bright gold, framed by thick lashes.

Her face is marked by a white design that frames her eyes and travels down her cheeks in gentle curves, trailing the sides of her neck to stop in an elegant little knot at her collar (this is actually a natural marking of her species, not a tattoo). She favors white clothing and silver jewelry, when she can find it, and usually wears garments that reveal a decent amount of skin as she finds them easier to move in.

Personality
Curious by nature, Maya is a gentle soul with an open and giving heart. She has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a yearning to learn as much about the universe as she is able. Though she tends to think the best of people on principal, she is not exactly naive, and has been traveling on her own long enough to have some modicum of "street smarts".

Magic/Abilities
A natural ability of the Ala'ora is their ability to communicate by thought rather than verbally. In fact, the entire species is mute; most of them only "mind-speak" in images and emotions, as words are a fairly foreign concept to them, though those that interact with humans are able to pick up some spoken language and transmit that.

Maya can telepathically project thoughts and feelings into other people's minds through physical contact--the better she knows a person, the less contact she needs, and with someone she's very close with she may not even need to touch them at all.

The ala'ora also have an electromagnetic defense mechanism that evolved in their time as "primitive" lifeforms; essentially they have the same ability to shock someone as an electric eel.

Her gifts from Mother really only expand on her natural abilities, allowing her to project not just thoughts and feelings but incredibly sophisticated illusions into a person's mind. She could make a person walk off a cliff by projecting the image of solid ground ahead of him, and he wouldn't realized what had happened until he hit the ground. Which of course she doesn't know she can do.

Relationships
Her family back on her home planet: four mothers and five fathers and a gaggle of siblings, both older and younger.

History
Born into a typical family for the Ala'ora people, Maya always dreamed of a grander life traveling the stars, so when she was old enough and independent enough to do so she set out. It was strange at first- due to their open nature, Ala'ora rarely travel without others of their kind, and usually they become desperately depressed without family contact.

Maya is rather unique of Mother's children in that she was not "gifted" as a child, but rather beguiled onto Mother's spacecraft and given her augmented abilities there at the age of twenty, before the memories were erased from her mind and she was sent on her way.

Physical Description
Mica has black hair with streaks of deep purple, blue eyes, and an olivey skin tone. His features are sharp, if a little feminine, casting his distinctly into the roll of "pretty boy" despite his leanly muscled build.

Personality
Mica is quiet by nature, almost shy, which is a little at odds with what he does for a living. He's perfectly content to let his sister have the limelight.

Magic/Abilities
Like his sister, Mica can hypnotize people through music. Though his voice is fairly exceptional, he mostly sticks to playing instrumental music while his sister sings, usually a keyboard or guitar.

Also like his sister, he can use his voice for destruction as well as hypnosis.

Relationships
Though not much of a talker, Mica makes friends fairly easily. That said, his only real relationship is with his little sister, Gem.

History
According to Mica, he and his sister have lived their whole lives in Aedolis, born into a lower caste before they were "discovered" when he was fifteen. They quickly gathered a following of fans and rose through the caste system to become real celebrities. Until that point, he had developed an insanely overprotective "big brother" attitude toward her that still has not faded.

In reality, both siblings were plucked off the streets by Mother when Mica was six and Gem three, taken from substance addicted parents who honestly probably didn't even notice they were gone. She kept them for nine years, tweaking their DNA until she was satisfied with their gifts before plopping them back in Haviah, believing they'd never left

Personality
Though vain and a little shallow, Gem isn't necessarily a bad person. Deep down- sometimes very deep down- she has a good heart.

She's a born performer and she loves the limelight, but she's not only in it for the glory- she truly does love creating music.

Magic/Abilities
Gem can hypnotize people with her singing, though it's usually unintentional.

However, when Mother's little quirks are activated, she can also hit notes that can shatter glass. Or eardrums. Or skulls (not literally- can hit frequencies that basically cause the brain to short circuit).

Relationships
Gem's closest and best relationship is with her brother, Mica. While she's kind and friendly to just about everyone, she doesn't form close ties easily.

History
Gem believes she and Mica have lived their whole lives in Aedolis, born into a lower caste before they were "discovered" when she was twelve and her brother fifteen. They quickly gathered a following of fans and rose through the caste system to become real celebrities.

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Addie is a slight creature, with nut brown skin and golden eyes, her face framed by a choppy pixie cut of hair colored in different shades of green. Though she is technically "still growing", she's not really under any illusions that she'll get any taller.

Personality
Sweet, shy, and rather cowardly are all words that would perfectly describe Addie. She has a soft spot for- well, just about everything, and will cry at the drop of a hat (either from sorrow or happiness).

Despite this, she does her best not to be a burden on others around her, as she is fiercely loyal to those she cares about. Her greatest passion is gardening, and she has a secret desire to live on a real planet, with real earth, and make a real garden.

Magic/Abilities
An earth mage of moderate power, Addie feels most connected to plants with her magic.

But when her "gifts" are activated (through extreme stress or by a deliberate order from Mother), if she is in proximity to a planet's lei lines, she can cause massive tremors that are planet wide- and sometimes even effect the magic in the lines themselves, corrupting the nature of the planet.

Relationships
Addie has a shaky relationship with her biological mother, Ella Montgomery. They are rather cold and distant, really only maintaining any form of "family" because they feel like they have to, not because they have any real affection for each other.

History
Her biological mother needed money after Addie's father- a drifter who just sort of vanished after Ella got pregnant- so she agreed to undergo some "experimental testing" from Mother in exchange for enough money to scrape by for a few years.

After this "testing" process, Mother blanked the woman's memories, but not entirely; she only remembers agreeing to be part of a test study, presumably targeted at pregnant women. Even so, Ella continuously has vague memories- often in the form of dreams- of Mother talking about Addie's "gifts", so she is slightly wary of her own daughter.

Even as a young girl, Addie could sense this wariness, and it is the main reason her relationship with her mother is so strained. She constantly feels as though Ella is just waiting for her to snap.

Physical Description
Jo has long, wavy strawberry blond hair normally tied back in a messy braid under a wide-brimmed hat and blue green eyes frames with thick, pale lashes. She has rounded, almost doll-like features and a slightly upturned button nose. Naturally fair and freckled, her skin is tanned from work outdoors, and her rather slight build belies lean muscle.

Personality
Perhaps a bit ironically, Jo has an almost puppyish personality- playful and happy by nature, if a little scatterbrained and overly energetic. Still, she's a hard and loyal worker, and actually very good at her job.

Magic/Abilities
She has an improved sense of smell and hearing, larger than average canines, and thicker than average nails that are really more like claws if she doesn't constantly file them, all of which are traits granted her by Mother splicing her genes with canine DNA.

Relationships
The Bellworth family- consisting of Jeb and Lila Bellworth and their five children- her employers and owners of the "Lazy B" ranch, as well as the few other ranch hands and the occasional drifter in search of a job.

History
According to Jo's memories, she grew up on the streets of a frontier town. It was a harsh life, but she was eventually lucky enough to find work as a ranch hand at the age of fifteen.

In reality, she was created by mother as a "test tube baby", and purposefully released onto Edanith a month before she found work with the Bellworths.
