Being shot really sucked. At first it had been nice to not have to deal with all the crap from the mission, but being stuck in bed while his arm healed suuucked. Apparently the bullet had left shards in his arm and he had to have surgery to get them out. Which also sucked.
The drugs were nice, but they made him sleepy and constipated. Alaric was ready for something interesting to do and for a real bowel movement. He flopped against his pillow, pale and rumpled, his short hair sticking out at all angles.
-
It seemed like no sooner was Alaric out of the hospital that he was right back in.
With a colorful unicorn plushie under one arm and a handheld game in the other hand, Gabriel followed the nurses directions until he reached Alaric's room. They had warned him that his friend would be pretty exhausted and, in kinder and more sterile terms, that he looked like shit, but he hadn't been seriously injured and that was what counted. Gabriel had panicked pretty badly when he'd heard his friend had been shot by freakin' terrorists until they'd been able to specify that if had only been in the arm and he'd be fine.
Still, he was at the hospital as soon as he was given the green light to visit--which was as soon as Alaric was out of surgery and off the anesthesia.
Stepping inside the room, Gabriel pulled up a chair next to Alaric's bed and plopped the unicorn onto his friend's chest so it was staring up at Alaric with its large, glassy eyes. "I saw him and thought of you," Gabriel said. "How ya feeling?"
-
Alaric used his good hand to pick up the unicorn, looking him over, "He's pretty. I think I'm gonna name him...Dai." Alaric cuddled him to his chest and watched Gabe, thrilled to have his friend there. Gabe made things better, even if he just distracted Alaric from how bad things really were.
"I feel like shit. Which is ironic, as I can't shit. But the drugs aren't bad. Hurts like a mofo."
-
"Awww, Ally," Gabriel said, reaching over to pet his friend's hair. "You need me to bring you some prune juice or something? Oh! Which reminds me! Since I know it's probably boring as all hell here, I also brought you this."
He set the handheld on the bedside table. It already had a game in it, though Gabriel was going to let him find out which one. "Uh...if you can lift your arm. So...man...what happened?"
-
Alaric's face lit up, "You beautiful, golden angel you." Alaric good hand snatched the handheld up and flipped it on. He glanced up at Gabe and gave him a wry grin, "Well, you know how it is. Can't really talk about it."
Which, he would tell Gabe the details later. But not in the hospital. Too many ears, "I apparently got fragments, so they had to do some extra surgery. Hopefully I'll be out of here soon."
-
"Eugh. That's always awesome. But hey, at least you'll get an awesome manly scar outta it, maybe?" Gabriel said with a grin, then peered at the game screen as he waited for the title screen to load, hoping this cheered Alaric up a little. It was a game he'd heard Alaric talking about forever, so what better time to grab it for him?
"Whatever happened, I bet you were all kinds of badass."
-
"I was so badass-OHMYGODYOUGOTIT!" Alarics squealed with delight, which jostled his arm and the delight quickly turned into pain. He fumbled the game and grabbed his upper arm with a small laugh, "Well, I got a little too excited there. But you totally got it! You are the bestest best friend ever!"
-
"Careful!" Gabriel laughed, reaching out and patting Alaric's good shoulder. "So, wow, I take it I did bad? You hate it? Well, shucks, I better return it and get you something else!" he teased, and would have hugged Alaric if he wasn't so afraid of hurting his arm. Even though Alaric was big and pointy, he was also surprisingly fragile at times.
-
"Touch this game and I shall break your hand!" Alaric curled protectively around the game, baring his teeth at Gabe in a mock snarl.
-
"Whoa! Down, kitty!" Gabriel said, jerking his hand away in mock fear. "Don't make me get the spray bottle!"
-
"I'll page the nurse and she'll come kick your ass!" Alaric grinned, still cuddling the game, "Did you get yourself the other version? So we can trade?"
-
"Is water wet? What kind of person would I be if I didn't get it?" Gabriel asked, looking appalled. "Of course I did! We can trade while you're stuck here. Not the same as WoW, maybe, but hey!"
-
"Speaking of, you better not grind without me. It sucks man, all this bed rest and no WoW! It's like pure torture." Alaric gave a dramatic sigh and flopped back onto the pillows, wincing again as he hurt his arm. It was hard remembering to be careful with it.
-
"Ally, I'm a lot of things but I'm certainly faithful. I would never sneak around and grind with other people not you," Gabriel said, lightly tousling Alaric's short hair. "It might feel good in the moment, but when the magic's faded and the levels have peaked, I'll just feel dirty. It's so not worth it."
-
"Good. Plus, I'll take you to the cleaners in the breakup." Alaric leaned into the touch, giving a contented sigh, "Thanks for visiting."
-
"Exactly. You act like such a sweetie but I know better and I pity the guy that ever crosses you."
Gabriel smiled. "You feeling alright? Tired?"
-
Alaric lifted one eyebrow, "I suggest you don't ever have to find out firsthand lover." To Gabe's next question, he gave a small nod, "It's not too bad. The painkillers make me want to sleep a lot."
-
"Which I'm sure is a good thing," Gabriel said.
He glanced to the door then back to Alaric. "You wanna sleep? I don't wanna keep you up, but I'lll stay as long as you want me to--or until the nurses kick me out," he added with a grin.
-
"Not yet. I'm not that feeble." Alaric grinned and patted the bed, "Man, I feel like we were just doing this."
-
"'Cause we are," Gabriel said, crawling into the small bed with Alaric. "What am I gonna do with you? Always getting banged up when I'm not looking."
-
Alaric nuzzled against his friend, careful of his shoulder, "Well, that's what happens when I get stuck on a mission with Cross."
-
Gabriel twitched at that. "Cross, huh?"
-
"Yeah." Alaric made a face, "Perfect, right? Honestly, in terms of missions, he was actually really useful to have as a partner. It's just that whole asshole-rapist thing."
Well, he had never raped Alaric, but he was BFF's with Raley and Alaric was pretty sure he had to have raped someone.
-
"Yeeeah..." Gabriel said, grimacing. "That, uh, that tends to put a damper on things, yeah."
-
"Just a tad." Alaric snorted, "But what about you? I've been cut off from the information grapevine. How have you been? Started dating Roman yet?" Alaric nudged Gabe at that comment.
-
"Pffft, what? No. Like that'll ever happen and you know it," Gabriel said, shaking his head. "I'm not his type."
-
"Really? What, uh, exactly is his type then?"
-
"Uh..." Gabriel shrugged. "I dunno. Someone cool? With less issues. Older. More mature. Uh, I annoy him a lot..."
-
"Yet he still spends most of his free time with you. And can't take his attention off you at parties. Hmmm...curious that."
-
"He doesn't have that many friends and I have to harass him into doing anything. Anyway, enough about that!" Gabriel gave Alaric a light nudge and grinned. "What's up with you and Remi?"
-
That made the smile fade. Alaric gave a one armed shrug, "Nothing. I mean...I just don't think I can keep it up. It's like a curse and, well, I don't want to be a replacement and that's all he wants, ya know? He'll never be over his wife."
-
Wrapping an arm around Alaric's waist, Gabriel gave him a gentle one-armed hug, lightly squeezing him against his side. "You can do better than that, anyway," he said. "You've got a lot to offer and if he can't see that, screw him. You need someone who'll like you for you and nothing else."
-
"Well, that's unlikely to happen as you are stuck on Roman. I'll just...get more cats. Vengeance can use the company and I can become a crazy cat person."
-
Gabriel snorted. "Well that won't be creepy at all! You are not gonna end up one of those animal hoarders that knit them little booties and sweaters and have T-shirts with their faces on it and never leave your house! I forbid it!"
-
"I would have to leave my house for missions. And there is nothing wrong with knitting my army of cats booties so their feet don't get cold." Alaric grinned, "Besides, loving things that will never love me back in my specialty."
-
"So what's that make me? Chopped liver?"
-
"You just use me for my damage dealing and my ability to make your favorite desserts." Alaric leaned against Gabe, grinning.
-
"Weeeell...now that you mention it..." Gabriel laughed and gently ruffled Alaric's hair. "Naw. If damage dealing was the reason, I'd have run off with that cute mage the other day."
-
"He was a tramp and would have broken your heart. Plus, he thinks that fire is the way to go. That's all flash and no true substance." Alaric sniffed, looking affronted, "I have a way better build."
-
Gabriel's grin broadened and he lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "I dunno, man...he was doing some pretty sweet damage. And he had some pretty wicked armor." He gave Alaric a sidelong look. "I bet he's rolling in the gold."
-
"Gold digging tramp." Alaric gave Gabe a very unamused look, glad he was able to keep from laughing, "He probably sucked some e-dick to get that armor. Some of us have morals and he was just fighting against ice beasts. I do better damage all around."
-
"Hey, it's not my fault you're a poor sugar-daddy," Gabriel said, keeping his expression serious. "If you don't want me to stray, then you need to start providing! I have needs, Alaric, and I need that sweet-ass Hammer of the Gods set."
-
"Bitch please. You aren't worth a Hammer of the Gods set. It would be wasted on you."
-
"Fine, then! No more favors for you! I'll just stand back and let you handle everything since I'm so unworthy!"
-
"Favors? What favors? You mean when I save your ass from dying all the time?"
-
"Whaaat? That's just harsh, bro. Who gets you the sweet loot and dies so you don't have to? Yeah, that's right."
-
"Kodex does. He's way more useful than you are." Kodex was actually female, but Alaric had gotten that confused somewhere and was convinced she was male.
-
"You mean she? And I die so you guys can live! I'm a martyr! I take the hits and distract the bosses so you can actually get in there and do stuff!" Gabriel gave an exaggerated huff. "Why am I your friend again?"
-
"No, I mean Kodex." Alaric made an exasperated noise, "And you are my friend because I make you those chocolate chip cream cheese cupcakes."
-
"Ohhh, yeah. The cupcakes. That's right," Gabriel said with a dreamy sigh. "Speaking of, as soon as you can use that arm again, I need those cupcakes inside me."
-
"Oh?" Alaric lifted one eyebrow, "You want me to shove it inside you in my kitchen? All hot and melty?"
-
Gabriel winked. "Oh baby, yeah. I want your creamy filling. I'll swallow every ounce and I'll even lick the spoon."
-
"You think you can handle all my thick, white filling? I don't think you can little man." Alaric yawned, eyes feeling heavy, "And what do I get out of this, hmmm?"
-
"Well, first I'll eat out your cupcake and then..." Gabriel paused for dramatic effect and waggled his eyebrows. "I'll put my dirty, filthy dishes in your dishwasher. I know just what buttons to press to get it all wet."
-
"Oh baby. Will you use the liquid soap? I like it messy."
-
"Oh yeah. I'll make sure to fill all your holes."
-
"I want your hands all over my dirty, dirty dishes." Alaric laughed, shaking his head, "Man, I'm getting too tired to think of anything good."
-
Gabriel laughed and wrapped an arm around Alaric's waist, gently hugging him. "Aww. You wanna try and get some sleep?"
-
Alaric reached out, taking Gabe's hand in his own, "Will you stay until I fall asleep?"
-
"Oh, Ally. Do you really need to ask? Of course." Gabriel gave Alaric's hand a reassuring squeeze. "Get some sleep, okay? You gotta get all healed up so I can whisk you away from here."
-
"Mmmm. Yes. And then real food and sleepovers and cupcakes forever." Alaric snuggled into his pillows, careful with his wound and closed his eyes, "I love you Gabe."
-
Gabriel cracked a smile. "Love you, too," he answered, reaching over with his free hand to tug the blankets up further around Alaric to sort of tuck him in. "Sweet dreams."
-
Alaric didn't last a lot longer than that, the drugs kicking in and he was soon softly asleep, though he kept his hand curled around Gabe's, needing that safety blanket.
-
Gabriel waited several minutes--to be sure Alaric was fast asleep--before he carefully extracted himself and crawled out of the bed. He was quite familiar with this routine; it seemed like one of them was always winding up here and heck, they'd practically begun their friendship with a hospital trip!
He paused to fix Alaric's covers, make sure his tray was close enough that he could comfortably reach his water and game, and then he left to head home--and hope that this trend of Alaric winding up injured would end. It killed him to see him hurt.
