Physical Description

Oliver projects the image of the sort who were always the ones getting beat up in school. It doesn’t help that it actually happened, quite often. He has ‘battle scars’ on his body from kids who went a little too far after hours. The young man is terribly scrawny and equally as weak as a kitten physically. It wasn’t as if he didn’t want to fight back when those much larger than him had bore down on him, he couldn’t. More than likely Oliver’s lack of any real weight comes from the fact the poor guy is always terribly nervous. About everything. He’s very tightly wound, and it usually causes a great deal of trouble with insomnia - hence the dark rings under his eyes and the haggard ‘I just woke up’ look he bares. That being said, Oliver can be a little scruffy appearance wise; often forgetting to shave or brush his hair because prevalent thoughts of ’did I leave the stove on’ ’did I lock the door’ and the like tend to throw him off what he is supposed to be doing.

Oliver’s red hair is kept mid-length and has a natural wave to it - if kept longer or shorter he finds it fairly difficult to manage as it has a tendency to ‘poof’ making him feel like he is wearing a Persian cat on his head. Due to his sister being a hairdresser, and trained as one himself, she has hammered ‘good hair care’ into his habits for the most part even if he rarely takes a brush to it; using proper shampoo and conditioner. That is before he was enrolled into the candidate program. He doesn’t have the time for such care now. He uses what he can get.

His eyes were once all brown, however as of now only one is due to trauma induced heterochromia. To be more specific, a high level of stress created by his first experience with an Electromagnetic Pulse, that his own body generated, made his system go out of whack. Hence why his right eye is a bright icy blue. Usually, his eyes are hidden behind a pair of thick, dark framed glasses.

Oliver is not a bad looking fellow when he chooses to clean up - shave, brush and not dress like he normally does(In shabby clothes that look like hand-me-downs). In fact, he’s a bit handsome. Fair skinned with a good complexion, complimenting his fiery hair. But because he’s just Oliver, he makes no effort and instead allows himself to be hidden by unkemptness.

Personality

To say he was high-strung is an understatement. Oliver is a jittery, twitchy, nervous young man. And he can’t help it; it’s pressed firmly into his nature as a person. Generally speaking, he can be rather annoying with his constant worrying and making himself sick over nothing. He knows he can be. He’s been told more than enough times, and thus he makes it a point to try and curb it. It hardly ever works for his mind is always going and rarely stops to relax. He will obsess and pick over small things and will miss the big picture even if it’s right in front of him.

Oliver is absent-minded; lost in his thoughts too much to realise that there is a world around him and he’s a part of it. His nitpicks and worries are relatively high on the selfish scale - as they normally only contain things that affect him. But he’s not a bad guy, in fact he’s a rather good guy that gets pushed around a lot and doesn’t even attempt to stand up for himself when he can- but he’ll complain about it later even if he doesn’t have a right to. This stems from his pessimistic beliefs; even if he tried to do something it wouldn’t matter in the end. He’d still get beat up. He has something of a complex; having often been a disappointment and nothing out of the ordinary and always ‘just’ something. ‘Just a nerd’ ‘just a geek’ ‘just a weirdo’ ‘just Oliver’. He used to try and change it, but it always ended in failure due to his pessimism. The young man has surrendered to a fate that sees him as potential-less.

Being thrown into the candidate program has him sitting on pins and needles. And with all honesty he firmly believes that he will fail and has no plans to put any effort into a lost cause. Which is just like him.

Weaknesses

  • Pessimism
  • General awkwardness
  • Being Oliver
  • Lack of confidence
  • Being Oliver
  • Social skills
  • Being Oliver
  • And…Being Oliver

Strengths

  • Writing - he’s rather good at it. And for some reason, it’s the only thing he’ll put effort into willingly. Before becoming a candidate he wrote an online blog entitled “All Of The Mundane”, which was just that. It was where he wrote, describing what could be considered mundane things in the city of Aedolis, yet he had a nack of giving it a life of its own.

  • Hair cutting - Oliver has an odd talent for it. Not simply for the artistry, but the precision. And he has had a lot of practice by working in his mother's salon and being exposed to the atmosphere, terms and watching other people. Considering his mother raised both him and his sister on her own for most of their lives, she took him to work from the time he was a infant. However, unlike his writing, it's not something he's passionate about. Despite it being the trade he was set into before being offered the book deal and then eventually thrown into candidacy. His mother used to nag him about it, calling it a wasted gift.

Abilities

He’s psychic, hence why he was enrolled in the candidate program. Unfortunately, Oliver’s talent in telepathy and telekinesis is severely lacking. In fact, they are so lacking that he had no idea that he had either until he was told. He didn’t seem to show any signs of it and of all people he should’ve known. However, what he’s lacking there shows up in Electrogenesis - A more recent development in psychics and has not yet gotten to the point of being fully understood. Lucky for him. For now instead of being useful, his abilities have proven to be more troublesome. His self generated Electromagnetic field(Which he didn’t know he even had until certain incidents) is a cause of flickering lights and communication disruptions on the moderate scale, however the intensity is linked to his stress levels. And with Oliver being Oliver he’s not entirely a good match, but he’s stuck with it which is unfortunate to the technology bound world around him.

He has very little control over his abilities - they are unstable and unpredictable at best. It’s a raw talent that is not particularly guided. Not that he has any hopes of success for himself in the future - he knows he’d need a hell of a lot of luck.

Due to the nature of his psychic abilities and the fact that Electromagnetic fields can generate radiation, breaking down and altering matter, he has the potential to become ill in the future. So far, the physical side effects of his Electrogenesis is frequent random nosebleeds. And as if he wasn’t all ready a dork, and feeling this all has to be some cruel nightmare, his hair has a tendency to stand on end and things attracted to the magnetic part of his field tend to…Stick to his body. Not all the time, thankfully. Just…most. Comes with his inability to control it properly and for now they are not permanent.

Family

Ethel [Mother] (51)
A middle caste entrepreneur of some success. Very fashion oriented and headstrong. The Mavolio siblings get their red hair from her - she has a heck of a lot of it. She had never intended to have children when she first married, however things happen and she does not regret it. Though, she still prioritizes her career over family. Oliver loves his mother- well, most of the time. She has her flaws.

Harris [Father](53)
He has been missing in the picture for quite a few years. Oliver doesn’t know him, he was too young when his parents separated. Harris is a military man with some renown. However, it is uncertain if he knows that his son has been enrolled in the candidate program.

Rezika [Older sister](27)
That’s not her actual name, she tends to lean on the more eccentric side and prefers that people not call her by her boring name. She works as a hairdresser in a successful salon chain their mother started. She’s good at what she does, but has a terrible temper. Rezika is notoriously known for shaving people bald if they happen to get on her bad side during appointments.

Oliver has learned to live with his sister’s oddities just as she has learned to live with his. They share a close relationship. She often worries about her little brother, more so now that he has been thrown into the candidate program.

Hopscotch[Pet](4)
A cat. Or a blob with cat features. Hopscotch is an overweight tabby who was spoiled beyond belief by Oliver. “Was” because she is now in the care of Rezika. Oliver swears the cat has magical powers, for some reason she was always able to find his house keys when he lost them. He misses her dearly.

History

Oliver Mavolio grew up in the middle caste. It wasn’t a bad life. The family had everything they wanted without being too greedy. He was the boy who got beat up at school and retreated to the cover of books for escapism - no matter if those said works of fiction were filled with Aedolis propaganda. The same awkwardness remains to this day. His family was fairly distant in their dynamics - he never knew his father, and his mother put her career at the head of her list. His pessimistic nature is fuelled by the constant feelings of helplessness that were reinforced during his childhood - not that he would make the connection. He really tries not to think about his childhood. Too many bullies he doesn’t want to remember.

Being enrolled into the candidate program came as a shock to everyone who knew him. Including himself.

It all started when his Network blog had put him in the eyes of a publishing company who saw he had a marketable writing style - marketable in the means of spreading subtle propaganda through fiction. They had contacted him and eventually bounded him to a book contract. For the first time in his life he felt good about something even if the content of his work would be heavily monitored and controlled. That didn’t matter. Hell, he didn’t even realize that detail. Unfortunately, his pessimistic gut feelings always caught up with him. It was all going to end terribly. At his first public appearance for a book promotion. Oliver being himself, was a nervous wreck.

At the first sight of a crowd of people, he blacked out. And so did everything else in a two-block radius. The immense stress he had put himself under caused the first real emergence of his Electrogenesis, in the form of a disruptive Electromagnetic Pulse.

And well, his life was changed.
