Rian felt a tinge of guilt after asking, immediately recognizing the expression and tone which Gabriel adopted as being that of reluctance and discomfort. It wasn't hard to tell that this was something difficult for him to speak about, which he hadn't expected, but it struck a chord in him.
Hearing Gabriel speak, he felt reminded of why he was pursuing problems like this in the first place- why it was important to draw attentions to these problems that their government insisted on shoving under the rug to keep everyone happy and ignorant like fat cats. And more than that.. He felt a little, tiny bit protective of Gabriel. It was stupid, yes, Rian was aware of that. Stupid me, he thought, attached to a person I just met.

"I'm sorry," he said gently, "Didn't mean to pry," he added as an after thought. "It's just.. I was wondering if you knew anything about them." Just then, more footsteps came into earshot. It was more than one person, that much he could tell. They began speaking among themselves, just mere mumbles until they moved closer and their voices became more distinct...

"Where the hell is that guy, and who was his friend? Did you get any information on them? They took TR's blades and knocked him out, what if they know something?" An awfully paranoid punk...?
Rian looked at Gabriel in silence, his eyes communicating that it was probably time for action. He reached for the blade he had taken from the last run-in, and held it at his side firmly. This time he would let Gabriel call the shot. He had done enough deciding the next move for them.

Gabriel opened his mouth, about ready to tell him not to worry about it, when hushed voices and footsteps cut him off. He clamped his mouth shut and froze, holding his breath though even his heartbeat seemed loud in the cramped space. There was more than one of them this time, but he was confident it wouldn't be a problem. Even without psionics (hell, even without a weapon) he could do a lot of damage; they'd all been trained in hand-to-hand but even then, he cheated.

He exchanged glances with Rian and held up a hand, signaling him to wait.

For all that he'd agreed they were a team, there was still no way he was letting the kid get involved. He planned on taking these guys out before Rian even had a chance to act.

The voices were in front of the closet now. Just a little bit more...

There!

Gabriel slammed the closet door open, throwing telekinesis into it to give it more oomph, and wood splintered against Generic Mook Number One before he even knew what hit him. And from the way he went down, he probably wouldn't know for a while. Springing out of the closet, Gabriel ducked under a punch, dropped low, and with a swinging kick knocked the legs out from under Generic Mook Number Two. The guy hit the ground with a grunt and Gabriel bounced upright, throwing up an arm to block a punch from one of the other thugs--

And gasping as something small and sharp pricked his forearm.

He didn't stop to think about what it was. No time. With a mental curse, he caught the guy's next blow and moved with it, grabbing him by the arm and sending him into a full-body toss.

By then, his arm was tingling, and the sensation was spreading up his shoulder fast. No time to mess around. He reached for his psionics--

And the world spun sickeningly, making him stumble back against the wall.

As Gabriel raised his hand to signal him, Rian gave one curt nod, staying against the wall with his knife clutched tightly in his right hand. He wasn't sure what Gabriel was waiting for, but when it came... It would come. And he wouldn't back out of this fight. After all, the problem before hadn't been that he was scared or reluctant to fight, but that there hadn't been much sense to two inexperienced guys attacking head-on a gang with weapons and god knows what else...

All of a sudden, Gabriel kicked open the door. Scratch 'inexperienced'. He threw himself into combat effortlessly, taking them down like it was a game. Rian stared for a moment before rushing out of the closet himself. There were two more in the gang than they anticipated, but that wouldn't be a problem with Gabriel kicking ass like that.

He turned his attention to the man closest to him, who was equipped with two knives and coming towards him. He dodged the first attack, ducking and stepping away easily, then raised his own knife for a counterattack. Their blades met, but the plasma edge of Rian's weapon cut straight through the other, leaving the guy with one weapon. In that moment of distraction Rian punched him in the stomach hard enough to have him lean forward before kneeing him in the face, effectively knocking him out.

At that moment he heard Gabriel gasp and looking back he wasn't sure why, as he didn't notice the poison that had been shot into his arm. He had no choice but to turn away once more as another two came towards him- The blue haired one and one unequipped. He went for the unequipped first, punching him and then sliding his arm around his neck and locking it in place, at the same time manipulating his body with the hold around his neck to use him as a shield. With his other hand he began to raise his knife as a threat, but the blue haired punk struck first.

To Rian's utter shock he had no qualms about attacking his own men (Which completely destroyed the entire purpose of taking one of them and using them as a shield), and merely slit his throat with his knife. Feeling the blood against his arm, Rian dropped the man in shock, letting his lifeless body fall to the floor. Suddenly he realized how serious this situation really was. When he took a step back, he felt his back hit the wall and saw a near-collapsing Gabriel at his side.

He knew he had to fight to the end.
He stayed perfectly still, feigning terror, and let the other punk come to him. He raised his knife, ready to strike, and Rian side stepped quickly. The punk's knife lodged in the wall, Rian struck, cutting his arm and the heat from the blade burning him at the same time. He screamed in distress, and Rian thought he had it now... They could escape as soon as he dealt the final blow.

Then he heard more footsteps, and something sharp hit his neck. He raised his hand to it immediately and dizziness swept over him, sending him to his knees.

"What the hell took so long!?" he heard the punk shout, as though from the end of a tunnel. From behind him he could hear the answer, "How dare you speak to me that way? I sent six of you to capture two kids, and this is what I find!"

Rian fainted with the last thing he heard being a gunshot, and the second and final scream that the punk would ever make.
