Machinery Never Smelled so Sweet [Cheesi]
« on: November 25, 2017, 09:05:13 am »
Morning routines could be both tedious and comforting, but whatever they were, they started early. Granite had always started his day a little earlier than most. You had to when there were extra steps to take. Get up, eat breakfast, go to the gym, go home, shower, and meticulously apply scale cream to keep them polished. Of course the cream didn’t change the somewhat drab, dull color, but it did prevent horrible itching from the water.

After all that, he still had to brush his hair, today was a sloppy man bun day, and then put on some not-workout clothes – specially tailored jeans to accommodate his non-human anatomy with a tight-fitting black shirt stretching across his torso.  The worst part was the boots. Normal footwear was impossible for any Kulshedra, but Granite hated even the custom made boots they had designed specifically for his weird, huge feet. If he could, he would have gone barefoot all day, every day. However they insisted he wear the heavy, irritating things when he was in the MARB garage – something about safety regulations.

Humans were weird.

Granite had been a Pilot for a long time, but still didn’t really “get” the humans he worked with constantly. For starters, they claimed he was the weird one, and that was just silly.

Nothing was sillier than the fact that none of these human mechanics could appreciate just how bad the garage smelled. Granite hated those first few breaths of machine grease air each morning. The oils and chemicals were terrible and he almost immediately sneezed upon entering the enclosed area. Nobody really even bothered looking up anymore for that. They were all used to the giant lizard person that seemed incapable of not constantly expelling the dusty air from his nose.

Crinkling his nose in annoyance, the Kulshedra stalked through the hanger with his boots thumping against the metal beneath them. As usual, his lips were set in a thin line, expression serious as he thought about the day’s tasks – first up was checking on his MARB. He nodded to some of the mechanics he recognized, but his ears were twitching as he heard an unfamiliar voice coming out of the open cockpit of his MARB. Why was someone he didn’t know fooling around with his baby? Even worse, why the fuck were they bitching about his baby?!

Granite was scowling grumpily as he looked up, arms folded across his chest. He opened his mouth to growl at whoever this intruder was but found himself stopping short, frown deepening. Subconsciously he leaned forward, nose twitching as he sniffed at the air. Buried beneath the oil and grease and metal was a very sweet, clean scent – and it was coming from his MARB. It was like lemongrass and mint, which were not unpleasant smells, but had never struck him as particularly great either.

Until now.

Now all he could do was inhale deeply, red eyes already narrowed into predatory slits as he tail lashed behind him in agitation. The urge to bury his nose in the source of that scent was overwhelming. It was very jarring and unexpected, to say the least.

Please, please, please let them be as pretty as they smell.

Petrol hadn't even been in town more than a week; he'd requested the transfer, started packing, been approved, moved, and maybe had one box unpacked yesterday and he had already requested to come in and start working. What could he say, he was excited. The MARBs were interesting pieces of machinery that he'd always wanted to get his hands into, far more interesting than any jet that was for damn sure. Working on the MARBs of the Titans or the HAWCs of the Leviathans had been one of his goals since Candidacy (he wouldn't call it a dream because that sounded so fruity and wishy-washy,) and the fact that he'd achieved it at such a young age made him just a little bit proud.

Today was his first day of work and they'd decided to let him show them his stuff by doing a maintenance checkup on one of the MARBs--to which Titan it belonged he knew not and didn't care, he liked the machinery not the people in them--and do a simple callibrations test, run diagnostics, and all that fun shit. He knew each MARB was tailored and customized a little bit to its Pilot but when he got in the cockpit of this one... Wow.

"Bloody hell this thing is huge!" He commented as he hunkered down and got into the equipment's computer systems to start running system security checks.

Two of the older mechanics down below who were supervising today chuckled, seeing Granite walk up and waving at him with chill smiles.

"Whoever this guy is he's definitely compensating for something." Ptolemy mused; seriously he was swimming in this thing, the Pilot seat was massive, the controls were massive, there was way too much leg room--hell he couldn't have piloted this thing even if he wanted to.

On the floor below the two mechanics started snickering, and Ptolemy paused a moment, brows furrowing as hs wondered just what was so funny and decided to poke his head out and see, forearm resting along the cockpit's dashboard as he looked and saw... A literal monster standing down there. His eyes widened a bit and for a moment he panicked thinking what the hell is that and why did they let it into the hangar?! before he noticed the clothing--tight shirt (that the monster was practically exploding out of he swore he could see the seams popping from here,) the pants and the boots.

Civilized monster? Or no, wait--oh. He was one of those lizard guys, Petrol had seen one or two in Candyland. But none of them had ever been close to that. And as he blatantly stared at Granite, the other two mechanics started laughing harder and he realized now why--because he was looking at the Pilot of this MARB and he... Definitely probably wasn't over compensating for anything.

Automatically his gaze flickered down just a moment to see if he could tell, he couldn't really, before it went back to the other Pilot's face.

"Hey Granite, don't worry this is one of our new guys. Pilot Echo Pegasi, he's just doing some basics tests on your baby there." One of the mechanics finally spoke up, the other still stifling snickers.

Ptolemy's gaze switched back and forth between the mechanics and "Granite", before he remembered his manners enough to give the guy a somewhat polite nod and a short wave, the blood rushing to his face as he blushed with embarrassment gods be damned--thankfully a noise made by the MARB's computer pulled his attention away and he ducked back down into the cockpit to check it out. At least it gave him an excuse to hide the redness on his cheeks; he did it to himself but still, did karma have to be such a bitch?

Maybe it was rude, but the other mechanics barely received an acknowledgement that they even existed. It wasn’t that he normally didn’t return their nods or waves of casual greeting; it was just that Granite was absolutely engrossed in staring up at the cockpit of his MARB where the tantalizing smell wafted down to him almost seductively.

His ear flickered in annoyance at the sound of snickering coming from beside him. They were laughing at the owner of the scent. What was funny and what did he think he was compensating for? It was an old joke humans liked to make, Granit knew that because he had heard it before, and they had probably explained it to him more than once, but he forgot because it wasn’t important. Honestly there wasn’t much that was important to him just then.

Just the sight of that adorable face peeking out from his MARB, well, maybe not everyone would call it an adorable face – maybe a very handsome face. Granite thought it was adorable, though. Such bright hair, his fingers itched to just reach out and touch it; although he didn’t want to stop with just running his fingers through that colorful hair.

Never in his life had he felt the urge to pounce on someone like this before. Of course Granite knew what this sudden, unexpected attraction was. In a way he had been both anticipating and dreading this day.

Why was the one he wanted a human? Actually it didn’t matter, they were perfect.

Granite shifted as those fuchsia eyes flickered over him, a grin spreading over his face at the fact that the pretty human was checking him out – even if they didn’t mean to do it. The Kulshedra was careful not to grin too wide, though, didn’t need to frighten his prey away with his weird mouth. Huh, he never thought of himself as a fuchsia sort, but it was his new favorite color.

His grin disappeared quickly as His – Pilot Echo Pegasi – ducked back down into the cockpit and out of his sight. They had just started blushing so beautifully too! That wouldn’t do at all.

Red eyes flickered to the supervising mechanics, both of whom seemed far, far too amused at the situation for his liking. Why did they have to laugh at his beautiful boy? “Pilot Pegasi can touch my baby all he wants. Actually you can just go ahead and assign him to working on my baby anytime it needs checking up on.”

Now that he got a whiff of that scent, well he’d love for his MARB to smell like lemongrass and mint all the damn time.

There was, of course, only one little problem with this whole situation (there were probably plenty of problems with it) and that was how did a Kulshedra go about wooing such a pretty little human? Only one way to really find out and that was to try.

Granite climbed up until he could just barely peek over the edge of the console and into the cockpit where his pretty boy was sitting and tinkering with some thingamajig. He really was small, wasn’t he? Not that the logistics of them fitting together really concerned him. His nose told him that this was a person that was just what he needed and wanted.

Climbing up another step, he draped his arms casually over the console and stared down at Pegasi completely unabashed, with perhaps a slightly goofy grin on his face.

“…Hi.”

Something about this sudden encounter troubled Ptolemy deeply as he started sifting through system menus to start a proper calibration test where he sat criss-cross on the floor of the MARB's cockpit. The weird lizard guy had grinned at him, why had he grinned? Also his face looked like it could have opened up further to swallow him whole like a snake and he wasn't sure how he felt about that.

Well, nevermind it wasn't important--he was probably just being a cocky Squad Pilot, they had a tendency to be like that he'd noticed. Something about needing confidence to work well on a team or whatever he was fairly certain, and none of that mattered or made the slightest difference to him so it was fine. Everything was fine.

Despite being engrossed in his work, the hangar was quiet enough this morning that he could overhear the conversation below, and he paused for a moment, fingertip hovering over a screen that asked him if he wanted to initiate the test, yes or no. Why would he just go and say something like that? That was extremely odd, to Ptolemy. Granite knew absolutely zilch about him, or even if he was a good mechanic, so why the hell had he just requested that he be the one to work on Granite's MARB from here on out?

It almost sounded like he thought he owned Ptolemy and for a moment the Pilot Echo's gut twisted a bit with mixed emotions; dread, confusion, nervousness, nothing particularly good. It was too weird to be good.

Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted as he heard a "Hi." and just about jumped out of his skin. The finger that was hovering over the screen pressed Yes without meaning  to and the MARB extended its mechanical arms up into a T-pose, the movement jarring Petrol as he hadn't exactly meant to do that or been prepared to. A quick look over his shoulder and yep, sure as shit, there he was. Grinning at him a bit... Goofily, was Granite.

"OI! What the bloody hell d'you think you're doin?!' He sputtered, hearing the mechanics below cackling and that in turn made his face only ever so much redder. "You can't just climb up here mate, I'm working!"

Not that this was the time for a lecture or even an argument, the test was waiting and Ptolemy just went with the first option that came into his head to remedy the immediate problem, which was the danger that Granite was hanging on to the outside of the MARB when he was about to perform physical tests with it.

"Look just get inside before something happens, I'm trying to do calibrations here and I can't exactly do that with you clinging to the side like a leech."

Oh Fire, he was adorable when he jumped all spooked like a little rabbit; a very bright, colorful rabbit. Although Granite could have done without the jarring movement of his MARB as it raised its arms in preparation of testing. He actually had to grab the console and dig his boots in to keep from slipping off the access ladder. How bothersome.

Even that couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, though, and he only grinned wider, perhaps a little too wide. Oh well, he chortled softly, it wasn’t an entirely human sound. That was precious! His thought they could tell him what he could or couldn’t do with his own MARB!

Also that blush. Hnnngh. He wanted to rub his adorable red cheeks and nibble on his…NO. Bad Granite. It was rude to do that. Humans were particular about those things. Odd creatures.

He didn’t even notice the other mechanics laughing at their antics. Fire, they might as well have ceased to exist for all the Kulshedra cared just then. All he could focus one was the blue-haired cutie pie currently chewing him out.

Only a few minutes in and Granite could already tell that this was going to be fun. The pretty, sweet-smelling boy had some bite to him. He liked that a lot. Swooning and acceptance was all well and good, he supposed for some people, but as much as he wanted the human before him, well, things were always more satisfying when you actually worked to earn them.

“Don’t mind if I do!” The irony of being ordered into his own MARB by a newb mechanic wasn’t completely lost on Granite as he scrambled into the familiar cockpit. He took up a lot of the available space as he moved to pull it shut.

Safety first and all that, so convenient too.

For the first time ever Granite wished the cockpit was even smaller. It would have been amazing to have His curled up in his lap right now while they pushed the silly buttons that made the things run through their paces. Too bad Pilot Pegasi wasn’t His…yet.

“You smell amazing,” Granite managed to very smoothly blurt out as he stared at him again, and then belatedly adding, “You’re really pretty.”

Well.. It had been either that, or tell him to get the fuck off of his own equipment. And Ptolemy was really hoping he'd just gone for the latter option, because he kind of hadn't been actually expecting the other Pilot to just

Climb on in. Like he did.

And it occurred to Ptolemy after a quick glance stolen over his shoulder that A this cockpit was rather small, and B this guy was... Massive. Like. Absolutely massive. Big feet, big hands, big chest, broad shoulders, big everything. Tail? He had a tail. And come to think of it his legs were interesting, and he had scales. And like. Dragon ears.

Huh.

Ptolemy didn't even realize that he was blatantly staring for a good few moments, mouth slightly open, brows furrowed with a look that was a mix of frustration as much as it was confusion. It was only when he realized that he was now on the floor between the other Pilot's legs with him sitting in the pilot seat and when the other guy spoke up and told him he looked... Pretty? And... Smelled good... That Petrol finally realized he was being rude and immediately looked away, face still flushed from earlier and only worse now due to his odd placement on the cockpit floor.

Cockpit indeed. Fuck his life.

"Uh. T-Thanks. You're... Big." He didn't really know what else to say, the scent comment really striking him as fucking odd and that in turn made him worry: just what kind of person was he dealing with here?

That grin on the guy's face was a little unnerving, and despite both of them being Pilots in a government-controlled facility with staff on hand all around them he still couldn't help the ancient fight or flight instinct inside of him that made him feel like he was about to get fucking eaten, and that was very, very much worth concern over. More than once he pressed the wrong button on the menu screen and had to go back, becoming only more and more aware of the other man's gaze drilling into him and making the hairs rise on the back of his neck.

The MARBs calculations went on as planned, raising both arms to the sides, then to the front, back, raising a leg, all that fun shit. It had to be precisely calculated, measured and timed--if one movement took even half a second too long or too quickly it could spell very bad news for the person piloting it, or his teammates nearby. And as strange as this guy was, they certainly didn't want that.

Timing it was a bitch though, considering he was trying to swallow down the lump in his throat and ignore the knots tightening themselves in his belly. The sooner he completed this test the sooner he could get out and do physical inspections and it'd be much, much harder for the guy to keep bothering him then.

Beyond getting into the cockpit and closing it, beyond blurting out so very smoothly how pretty he was, Granite had absolutely zero plan. It wasn’t as if the Kulshedra had expected the pretty human to immediately swoon and fall into his lap, but he also didn’t know what to do with this.

Whatever this was.

The much smaller Pilot was staring at him, but was it a good thing? Granite wanted to let a deep purr rumble in his chest as those lovely fuchsia eyes looked him over, but honestly His’s expression didn’t inspire confidence at all. Did he not approve of what he saw? Humans could be a touch finicky about non-humans and attraction.

That brought on a moment of panic. What if His wouldn’t have him? It seem unfathomable that he could want someone as His and for them to not want him back. Humans didn’t rely on scents like Kulshedra did, though, so His probably couldn’t recognize him that way, but surely he would come around?

Granite forced the negative thoughts away. His would want him after they impressed him with some proper wooing. It was just a matter of learning how to woo His.

The stammered thanks and observation of being ‘big’ made his face split in another too-wide grin, flashing those very sharp teeth for a slit second, but Pilot Pegasi had turned his attention away, thankfully. Normally he had much better control over how wide he opened his mouth, but when he was buzzing with so much excitement it was harder.

His seemed…tense. A trained mechanic shouldn’t be making so many mistakes.

“Do I make you nervous? I’m sorry.” Granite’s ears drooped a bit, they were very expression pieces of anatomy, made it hard to lie – one of the reasons he wasn’t a deceptive person by nature. His ears kept him honest. “I just wanted to meet you, not make you uncomfortable. A lot of humans are intimidated by me at first.”

Many of them stayed intimidated. Granite could be very serious and severe at times, but he felt like a giddy kid right now.

Something about the tone of the Pilot's voice, his naivety made something twitch in Ptolemy and made him want to chuck a wrench at the guy's head. The Pilot of this MARB was a Pilot Noble he recalled now, and if this guy really was him then holy hell he should know better!

He was a mechanic trying to do his job, trying to perform a routine checkup on his first day and not fuck up and this asshole just decided to jump onto this machinery that could squash him like a bug and stick his fat head in there to say hi and tell him he smelled good? Who the fuck did that??

He didn't understand how the strangeness of the situation seemed to fly right over the other guy's head, but as much as he wanted to yell at him he couldn't--or rather, shouldn't. He was still Ptolemy's superior and that alone made him grit his teeth.

"I--yes. Slightly? I'm trying to work--"

Now was not the time to be having a friendly conversation, as Petrol suddenly picked up on something off. One of the measured movements had taken a half a second too long and he immediately honed in on it, stopping the callibration and pulling up system logs to check it over and repeat the movement, see if it happened again. If Granite decided to try and speak at this moment he would be immediately hushed as Ptolemy listened closely and heard a sort of grinding noise coming from a mechanism in the leg.

"Che palle!" He swore, stopping the test and all operations, and popped the cockpit open, vaulting over the outside edge and clinging to the outside of the marb with nimble fingers as he pulled a few tools out of the belt around his hips and popped the casing on the part to take a look on the inside, sticking his flashlight in his mouth while he poked around inside what would technically be the mech's hip.

It was a simple fix thank the gods, and as he climbed back into the cockpit and rebooted it and ran the tests again he let out a breathy sigh as it came back green and he threw a quick glance at the other Pilot.

"There are better times for saying 'ello than when I'm at work." He said pointedly.

A Kulshedra did that, but Granite couldn’t blame His for not knowing. Most humans didn’t know much about his kind. It had never bothered him before now, but then again, he had never expected to find a human that smelled so sweet that he wanted to nibble at their throat while he made love to them. That thought caused him to pause altogether.

Whoa.

Granite shook his head to clear those thoughts. Things would get far too awkward very quickly if he followed that line of thinking. The last thing he wanted to do was make this more awkward than it already seemed to be. Humans were weird about picking out their mates. Going by scent seemed to be a much more efficient method to him, but if Pilot Pegasi required proper human wooing, then he was going to get it – even if Granite had no idea where to start.

His ears twitched again before drooping. They seemed irritated with him. Well that was a good place to start – by not making His angry with him before he got the chance to sweep him off his feet. Besides, they were right, Granite had stuff he should be doing as well!

It just seemed less important than meeting His.

“Oh, I –“ Granite blinked, mouth clicking closed as he was hushed by the much smaller man – who was ironically still sitting between his legs.

It was amusing! Or would have been if his heart wasn’t suddenly leaping into his throat as His exclaimed in words he didn’t understand before jumping out of the cockpit! Rationally he should have known that even if His slipped it wasn’t that far of a fall, but it was still far enough that he could be seriously hurt! Granite leaned forward, looking out over the edge of the console to look down at His while he worked. His cheeks flushing as he watched him.

When Ptolemy climbed back into the cockpit Granite leaned back in his seat, lifting his large hands to his face and trying to rub away his blush. Getting reprimanded yet again didn’t help his tanned skin get any less red.

“Sorry, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Should I go now? I don’t want to mess up your work. It’s important.” Keeping the MARBs in tip-top shape was very important. Besides, His was obviously dedicated to doing his job well. Granite could appreciate that. After all, he expected his squad mates to perform at their very best and give their training all they had.

Ptolemy wasn't one to exactly pride himself on being an asshole; he knew he could come off as prickly at best, and a downright dickhead at worst. He had all the charming personality traits of boiling water hitting your hand. But that didn't mean he was heartless, or a total oblivious idiot--that was only sometimes.

He wanted to stay mad at the guy, he really did.

But the sight of those drooping ears made the severity of disapproval in his brows slack a bit; it was like he'd just scolded a puppy. How the hell could anyone stay mad at that?

He pursed his lips and looked away, immediately frustrated with himself simply because he couldn't stay mad; but it was a fair point. This guy was fucking weird, jumping into the cockpit of a MARB during tests to suddenly say hi to a new mechanic and give 'im a fuckin' heart attack, was that necessary? Was it normal? It didn't seem normal to Petrol in the slightest, but maybe it was for this guy, if those snickers from the mechanics down below were anything to go by.

"Look, it's fine, just... Just stay out of the way alright?" He grumbled, completing the calibrations test before the cockpit was popped open again so he could climb on out and start doing the physical inspections.

"So wot, ya do this to every new guy who shows up in Travica, then?" He asked as he climbed out, throwing another hard look Granite's way and not quite sure how he felt about it, or why he was bothering to make conversation--maybe just to get him to stop looking like a kicked puppy, that was more than likely it.

Not like it was Ptolemy's usual nature to try and think too much about it anyways.

Those persuasive ears immediately popped back up when Granite was told to simply stay out of the way instead of completely get lost. Sure, two seconds ago he’d convinced himself that it was best if he left so that His could do his work without interruption or distraction, but that was before Pilot Pegasi unwittingly encouraged him to discard those thoughts. If His was okay with him staying a little longer why would he hurry to leave?

A grin split his face, literally split it before Granite quickly made sure his cheeks were closed so that he wasn’t flashing those sharp teeth at Petrol. Humans tended not to like his weird mouth and predator teeth. They might like to think of themselves as some superior apex predators, but deep down humans were just another prey animal – just with fancy technology.

Thankfully His climbed out of the cockpit again so he didn’t think he saw. Granite leaned forward again, peeking out over the side of the console to watch Petrol work with unrestrained interest.

“Oh no, not all of them, that would be weird.” His seemed to already think it was weird, but he shrugged the thought right out of his thick head. “You smelled really nice, though, so I wanted to meet you. It’s a Kulshedra thing.”

It was a very Kulshedra thing, but Granite didn’t think explaining it would go over well right now. A human His needed time to get used to him – if he ever got used to him. That thought was enough to pull the Kulshedra’s mouth into an unhappy frown, ears dropping harshly again. What if His never liked him? He wasn’t sure what he would do. It wasn’t as if he could force His to accept him.

Pine after Pilot Pegasi until the man died? Granite’s chest clinched tightly at the very thought of His dying. Nope, oh no, he was doomed.

Seemed to think it was weird?

No he definitely thought Granite was very fucking weird.

He chanced a glance upwards as he worked, seeing that apparently telling him that he didn't have to leave was like telling a five year old it was Yule morning. And that was very, very odd to Ptolemy. He'd never met a single person so eager to meet him or spend time with him, and he really wasn't all that spectacular of a person, and he'd be the first person to admit it.

He was just a dude who happened to be a psychic, like literally every other Pilot here right now. He didn't see what the excitement was about.

"Guess so." He grunted around a wrench he held in his teeth as he used his hands to pop the cover off of a protected switch board, checking the lights and making sure everything was in the green, which it was.

He entered in a few values and keyed in some codes on the small touchpad that was clasped to his belt, popped the cover back on and dropped the wrench back into his hands to close it up again, all was good to go as he submitted his evaluation with a few flicks and key presses. He patted the MARB's leg, the sound so light against the metal, swallowed up in the huge space of the hangar.

"Awright well ya all set there, pal, so uh. Yeh." He had absolutely no clue on how to end this conversation, or if he was supposed to keep it going, or...

"Cool Petrol, you can go to lunch--hey actually, while you're at it, you should go with Granite, I bet he's on lunch break soon too, right Granite?" Suddenly one of the other mechanics had spoken up, calling up to the weird Kulshedra whatever guy up in the cockpit and Ptolemy stared at his coworker with horror in his eyes as wide as saucers, before he looked back to the cockpit and back to the guy because what the actual fuck.
