Make My Day [Lion]

"... Alright, that should be the last of the shipment."
"Great, here's the other half of your payment as promised."

Credits were traded into metaphorical pockets and Kirkley smiled, saluting the man as he walked away with his newfound goods and he let out a slight sigh. It wasn't often that he strayed far away from Haviah if he ever came to Aedolis; after all, Haviah was where he stayed with Ain. He never did really like venturing too far away from places with her direct influence, but sometimes it just couldn't be helped.

He glanced at his airship, wondering if he should head back immediately or maybe explore a bit. Adstreia had never really been high on his list of priorities, so... Eh, what the hell, right? Couldn't hurt anything. He might find Bifrost--that was his excuse to go anywhere or do anything, really.

After making sure his ship was properly secured and tended to he decided to make his way through to the lower levels of the city, finding he naturally tended to fit in a bit better there. He got a few less weird looks, and wasn't regarded with nearly as much suspicion by the law enforcement. He had to admit, he kinda had the air of 'trouble' about him, as he walked with probably too much confidence from someone who wasn't from this city. He really didn't know a whole lot about it.

He took a fair amount of time looking at the different venues, shops, and foods, noting the differences between Haviah as he worked his way down until he finally came across a pretty run down, hole-in-the-wall kind of pub.

Hm. Pub food didn't sound too bad, and he was getting kind of hungry anyways from all this looking around that he'd been doing.

Just as Kirkley was starting to enter he blinked, startled and just barely able to sidestep two men as they were tossed out onto the street from within, reeking of alcohol and slurring insults at each other as they started to wrestle right there on the ground. Kirkley let out a slight sigh through his nose, shaking his head. Now that was something he hadn't had in a long time--a good brawl. It almost sounded fun--but he was hungry, first.

He took a seat at the bar, getting a house burger that looked sketchy as shit and a glass of whiskey to start. He glanced around at all the patrons, his one functioning eye sharp as a hawk's as he looked around for anyone who might be of interest.

He didn't really know what to look for, or who, rather. If Bifrost did come back there was no guarantee he'd look the way he did before, or act the way he did before; he could be a completely different kind of person, but something told Kirkley there might be at least one familiar thing about him, one clue... So that was what he was hoping for.

He let out a sigh, finishing his whiskey when he heard some shouting and paused mid-drink, looking over and seeing a flash of deep green hair.

No way, could that..?--

This wasn't his usual slummed out dive. The lower levels of Adstreia weren't quite like that of Haviah. While there was definitely it's share of unsavory bits and blemishes, Adstreia had a thrumming machine, an engine that kept going, kept innovating and finding what worked and recycling what didn't. Even this dive bar was exceptionally clean than the kind Grisham had frequented during Stage 5.

But out of all the shitty dives in all the shitty levels and sectors of the City of Stars, Grisham liked this one the best. It had the best beer - and even if he wasn't much of a beer guy, it was a sight better than bumbling around in his apartment, fiddling with shit, or drinking himself to sleep. At least here, he could growl at people before he passed out in his own bed.

That was the goal. See how far away he could go from his apartment and see how long it would take for him to make it back. He would trundle if he had to. One time he crawled and snipped at a few ankles that dared to get in his way, or kick his face in.  PR didn't like that one too much.

Or he would have if he didn't appreciate someone bumping into him and making him drop his half bottle of bourbon. Now there went a hundred and fifty credits down the drain. "Listen Fuckbrains, I'm gonna make you eat that glass if you don't get me another bottle of that bourbon. Final Warning," it was all he said.

"Piss off. Don't give a fuck who you are," was it's very apt response.

Fair was fair.

Grisham didn't waste any time wailing his right roboarm into the guy's face, leveling his chin and making him spin an entire 360 degrees. Yup, he was gonna be eating that glass.

It was hard to tell just what kind of person that deep green hair was attached to from where Kirkley was sitting; he quickly finished the rest of his drink, just as the loud crashing sound of a glass bottle hitting the floor made the place go quiet.

He stood up, carefully stepping his way over, quiet so he could hear the conversation but again, from where he was it was difficult to tell who was saying what--until Greenie clocked the guy so hard he spun like a character from a cartoon and sent the guy to the floor where he lay, reeling from that punch.

Kirkley let out a low whistle, finally getting a look at the guy's face.

Yeah that couldn't be him. Probably. He hoped that wasn't him.

Either way though, he had to be sure; so he stepped over to the grumpy green-haired patron, stepping over the groaning body on the floor on his way over.

"Oi oi, careful now or you'll get tossed out like the last two bozos not twenty minutes ago." He said by way of greeting, one hand resting on his hip as he took in the sight of the guy before him.

He had a kind of ruggishly handsomeness to him that piqued Kirkley's interest. He looked worse for the wear; rough and worn by countless storms. And he also looked like someone not to be messed with, because boy was he pissed. Kirkley probably would've been too, if that'd been his bourbon knocked to the floor.

Maybe he wanted to start a little trouble. Maybe he was just too curious for his own good.

Maybe he was looking to get punched in the mouth this evening.

"Oi, Oi." Those words came completely out of left field. Hearing it primarily meant that someone was about to try and distract him before it became something else came out of right field and clocked him right in the chin. He'd used that tactics many times himself back. Use a distraction, gain the upper hand. It didn't even need to be clever. Just a few seconds where your opponent wasn't paying attention and they'd be had.

Grisham took a step back and put distance between him and the man that did his little twirl and when he gauged that man approaching close enough to him, he reacted. He didn't think about it, just swung his fist forward and connected it to the base of this guy's throat.

Get the one up on him now, huh? Just try it, asswipe.

And honestly, it never really occurred to Grisham that this was a good Samaritan coming in to try and negotiate what was quickly going to turn into a nasty spill. Which, maybe, only encouraged Grisham even more to actually go out of his way to finish the fight before it began.

Wasn't much of a brawl if the other guy was already knocked out and asleep in his own drool.

Well.

Kirkley had been expecting it to go one of two ways: Either he was gonna get punched, or he was gonna have this guy screaming in his face threatening to fight him. Honestly, with how he'd been yelling earlier, he'd kind of expected the latter.

So when the guy moved so quick for someone who smelled like booze and was probably drunk Kirkley barely had enough time to try and sidestep the punch; it still clocked him hard on the collarbone and knocked him back a step. If there hadn't been an empty table behind him he totally would have fallen on his ass, though as it was the table got knocked over.

Well clearly this guy wasn't one to be reasoned with, and when someone is angry and drunk there's really only one way to deal with it--let 'em get it out of their system, right?

So, okay, fine. No Mr. Nice Guy today. That was fine with him.

"Careful there big guy, someone might get hurt!"

He retaliated as soon as he got both feet back under him, lunging to throw a punch into the guy's jaw; he didn't pussyfoot around when it came to a brawl, it was aim for the face or go the fuck home. He had to remember to reign it in though; if he got too out of hand there'd be broken bones quick with the cursed strength of his, it really made it hard to go all out in any kind of a fight, and he hated it.

Now he wasn't sure if he was fighting to keep this guy from going apeshit or if he was just doing it for the fun; maybe it was for both. But he couldn't deny that smirk on his face; this stranger definitely seemed to know what he was doing, and he almost seemed kind of familiar. His best guess was that he must've been a Pilot or something, to look familiar on this planet, because he didn't get the sense that they'd run into each other before.

If that was the case, then good. This guy would know what he was fucking doing and this might actually be interesting.

Big guy? Boy he hadn't heard that one in a long while. And definitely not from someone who was clearly bigger than he was. Grisham pretty much considered himself average physique-wise and he wasn't one to boast about big muscles and small brains. He was trained to find a weakness and exploit it, the fastest way to kill before your enemy killed you. The formula was simple.

In this case, of course, killing anyone in a city dive bar was pretty much frowned upon. One idiot got his ass kicked and thankfully for him, it was one hit and he stayed down. This guy, however, didn't know how to mind his own fucking business and it seemed like Grisham was going to have to teach him. A real shame that.

Some people just never learned.

"Yeah, I'm looking at him," Grisham quipped and kept his bodyweight low to the ground to better maneuver out of the way of that oncoming punch. To the face too. Really? What was this guy, an amateur? Everyone punched to the face.

Grisham ducked to the side, one arm raised up to grip the huge fuckhead's wrist and to pull him forward and the Hellion commander tilted his waist so that he was almost side to side with him and pulled his right elbow in to jam the joint hard against his ribs. He was a little addled and the momentum pressed him a bit more against the stranger than he wanted.

He didn't wait to hit again, and as soon as he felt something connect he pressed his whole body weight in an effort to bring this asshole down to the ground.

Oho! So he was smart enough to have some comebacks!

Kirkley let out a sharp laugh as his attack was dodged; instead he was pulled against the man as an elbow connected with his frame and he felt the pain spread through his ribs, his grin growing ever more fierce as he let the man take him down to the ground, grabbing a fistful of his hair and twisting, rolling the two of them over so Mr. Grouchass was on the ground and Kirkley on top of him, slamming his head into the ground and throwing a hard punch at the man's gut.

On their way down they'd knocked over a few stools and the patrons were understandably quite upset at the turn of events; security came over and grabbed Kirkley off of the man's hips, picking up the stranger as well and the two of them were both dragged and tossed outside like the other two rascals Kirkley had passed on his way in.

He hit the pavement outside with a heavy grunt, quickly pushing himself back up and rolling his shoulders, smirk still prevalent on his face.

"Well, congratulations. We got kicked out. Ya gonna finish what you started?" And the stranger was kind of the one to start it, punching that other guy's lights out and drawing Kirkley's attention anyways. He'd also been the one to throw the first punch, so hey, he was just telling it like it was.

Well, shit!

Frankly he hadn't seen that coming. Grisham didn't at all care whether he was kicked out or not, just that he whooped this asshole's well, ass, but now that he was being dragged out by security no less, he kind of felt bad about it now. Like he was some unruly dog that needed to be controlled by the scruff, and set into the corner.

Grisham was growling and huffing the moment he got to his feet again, his head pounding from where the stranger managed to bash his head into the ground. His skull was pretty thick so it didn't really matter. Not like his brains weren't already scrambled anyway.  He spit and wiped his lip, scowling at this huge asshole. He was big, Grisham'd fought and killed bigger.

"You're fucking fault anyway. If you'd have just minded your own fucking business, I'd be enjoying my brandy now," he snorted, spitting again. Grisham grit his teeth and wasted no more time rushing forward and tackling the man around his middle.

Adrenaline was burning hotly in his blood now, coursing through him and ignited like jetfuel, and with it, somehow, he managed to wrap arms around this huge fuck and lift him clear into the air before tilting to the side and slamming his back into the ground. Grisham fell with him again and cupped his hands together, bringing them down into Kirkley's face.

Kirkley let out a hearty laugh, shaking his head a little, hair swaying as he raised a hand and gestured for the green-haired stranger to come at him, then.

"Yeah, maybe I just had a hankerin' for startin' shit tonight!"

He braced himself as the other man wasted no time in rushing him like a bull; he wasn't knocked over, but rather lifted up which he hadn't been expecting, and thrown down onto the ground with a heavy thud and an "Oof!"

He managed to yank his head out of the way as the stranger's hands went down on the ground where his face had been not half a second before, and he used the same movement to free an arm from under him and try to elbow him in the neck, pushing with all of his muscle and body weight to throw the man off of him and roll them over so he could stay on top instead, a fierce grin on his face as he tried to smother Grisham's face with one hand and drive a hard punch straight into his sternum with his other, aiming to knock the wind from him before he rolled away to put more distance between the two of them again, coughing and finding himself slightly winded from the slam into the ground earlier.

"Have to say, you look familiar, friend. Pilot?"

Okay maybe that wasn't the best plan.

In his defense, he was pretty right pissed off. This guy was just a heap of trouble. And if there was one thing he needed it was a right good ass kicking! Fucking-A! ALL HE WANTED WAS TO ENJOY HIS GODDAMN BEER AND HERE HE WAS IN A FIGHT NOT EVEN ABLE TO DO THAT IN A SHITTY DIVE BAR HE DIDN'T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO FIND HIM IN!

Ugh, he really needed a smoke.

A vague thought only in passing when they were suddenly rolled over and Grisham wheezed as the air was knocked out of his lungs. He gasped for breath and when the other guy rolled away, Grisham got out of range. This guy could fight, he'd give him that. And maybe he himself was just too stupid and bullheaded to realize that maybe he was just a wee bit bigger.

Nope. That wasn't it at all. Grisham had fought bigger, he'd told himself.

"Pilot? Yeah, I'm about to pilot your ass right into the ground," he growled and moved slower now, gauging the other man, watching his stance and how he wheezed with mildly labored breath. Had the wind knocked out of him but still he could fight. It was worthy of a modicum of respect. "Grisham," he said, nodding to him.

Grisham moved forward, feigning high before alternating his stance and ducking low, bringing in his metal right arm underneath the other guy's and crashing as hard as he could against his ribs. Grisham shifted his stance, twisting his hips and bring his left elbow into the other guy's jaw.

Pilot his ass into the ground?

PFFFFT.

Kirkley raised his hands in mock surrender, toothy grin on his face. "Oooh look out we got a badass over here." He nodded back. "Kirkley."

Grisham slid forward again and Kirkley stepped to meet him, anticipating the feint attack and managing to grab the cold metal fist with one of his own hands, though the twist clocked his jaw pretty good, made him bite down on a cheek and spit out some blood.

He kept his grip on that metal fist though and used it to pull Grisham up against him, using one of those long legs to sweep the Pilot's out from underneath him, shoving him to the ground again with a smooth movement as he took a step back, letting out a breathy laugh as he wiped the blood away from his face.

"Bit of an old fart to still be on active duty ain'tcha?" He teased with a grin before he aimed to kick the man in the gut.

Not like Kirkley was one to talk--this guy was practically an infant in comparison if they were talking about age here but it wasn't like this guy knew that. Besides, he felt like he'd seen him before, in pictures or magazines or something. Seemed like he was a guy of some kind of importance, but Kirkley wasn't one to give a shit. Everyone was important to somebody somehow somewhere. If he'd tried to care about every one he'd have lost his shit thousands of years ago. Best keep it simple and not worry about first impressions.

Kirkley? More like Jerkley. Not letting a guy just enjoy his asswhooping in peace.

Ugh, yeah he really really needed a smoke.

Grisham knew he'd end up on the ground again somehow. This giant motherfucker had at least fifty pounds on him. He could probably clean out an entire all-you-can-buffet in one go and still be hungry, what with his fat ass.

Grisham spat off to the side and when that foot came at his gut, his arms wrapped around it and he twisted at the ankle, and swung his other leg out to catch Kirkley's out from under him, with as much force as he could muster, to twist his footing out from underneath him.  Grisham quickly scrambled up and threw himself on Kirkley's back, going for a headlock, and keeping his hold in a vice grip with his right.

"I was on inactive duty until you came and interrupted! You shoulda minded your own business!" Grisham growled and cracked his knuckles against the back of Kirkley's skull with his left hand.

The kick didn't connect the way Kirkley had intended, and really he should've seen it coming and to a point he did, but he also didn't particularly care enough to counter it. He wasn't giving this fight his all and he knew this Grisham dude wasn't either. It was lazy and frustrated, and that was fine with him.

His weight was shifted and he went down, knocking his breath from him as he let out a sharp laugh as he felt arms wrap around him and lock him in place, squeezing the air from his lungs. He ground his teeth, that grin still there as he snorted at the man's comment. Was it meant to be threatening? Probably. Did he take it that way? Not at all.

"Ooh, what're you gonna do, beat my ass with your cane?!"

He felt the crack of knuckles against his skull, rattling his brain as he got both arms underneath him and pushed himself up with the other man still on his back, on his knees on the asphalt. He jerked his elbow back to catch Grisham in the gut, repeating the movement with as much force as he could muster without potentially damaging inner organs as he pummeled him, pushing back to send the guy onto his back on the ground with Kirkley on top of him, arms still wrapped around his neck as he used his body weight against the old Pilot and struggled against him.

He still couldn't wipe that fucking grin off his face. This was amusing, he couldn't help it!

That was the idea after all. Beating this guy up. After all he ruined his night of ruminating on the past and drinking himself into a stupor. Grisham didn't have any real plan of attack when it came to nights like this. But if he couldn't even wallow in his own misery correctly then what was the point? And deep down he knew that this pointless squabble was just him trying to compensate for that spilled alcohol. He was a Pilot Royal, he could always get more brandy.

There were other bars in lower Adstreia he could have just moved on to. Other places where he didn't have to cause a ruckus and get kicked out. Or cause a ruckus and still have the other guy kicked out just because he was Pilot Royal.

"What the hell is so funny!!!??" he panted, wheezing momentarily as those elbows robbed the air right from his lungs. And then he was on his back and Grisham refused to let go even as Kirkley's fat ass was crushing him. He just kept his grip firm and while the other man was grinning, soon that laughter, whatever it was that was funny, made Grisham's grip gradually loosen, and although he still hung on, it was less with intent to kill.

He snorted aloud suddenly and just laughed, hard. So hard that he was wheezing and soon released the hold around Kirkley's neck and decided it was best to just let himself be crushed under that giant..  Or suffocaton from laughter. Because why the hell not?

The arm around his neck was finally starting to loosen up, and as it did so he was able to gasp for air, said air going right back out of his lungs as he laughed when this guy started to join in on the apparent merrymaking.

Perhaps the absurdity of the situation had reached them both; once the arm disappeared from around his neck entirely, Kirkley coughed and wheezed in between his snickers as he finally rolled off of the other man, on his hands and knees on the pavement as he got the breath back in his lungs, shaking his head with the grin still there.

"This," He panted, "This is funny. You finally calmed down enough, old man?" He snorted, pushing himself back up onto his feet as he offered his hand to the Pilot Royal still on the ground, figuring if he took it they could call things mostly even and call it a night.

"The hell is a Pilot like you doing in a place like this anyways?" He asked, nodding to their immediate surroundings.

One of the lowest levels of Adstreia for sure, and while every man had their reasons for doing what they did, Kirkley wanted to know Grisham's. It was a tad bit suspicious if you asked him, not that he particularly cared any. He held no amount of loyalty to the country of Aedolis--not anymore.

At any other time, Grisham couldn't see any of this ending well... He'd be drunk or stoned, or with any luck both. He never drank excessively not in the early years. There were even fewer reasons then to drink. Isaak was small, and when the war was over, he could spend more time with him. Sure he'd been made Commander by then, and he'd lost his arm, and his friends, and more Hellions than he wanted to count.

It was just easier then, to add the wounds to your carapace, to know that they would callous eventually, roughen and harden with time. He had his kid to raise, he had a wife. Had a wife.  Weird to think he'd ever actually miss the yelling. The nagging, the scolding. But it just got done being easy, that time was over. Like a trial run in a Sim and then in a moment he blinked and Isaak was gone, and so was Lisa, and he could only really remember sitting on his couch, staring up at the ceiling and counting the shadows and dips in the bumps he found there.

Yeah, it could have been worse on a night like this. That brandy wouldn't have been knocked from his hand, it would have been in a stone cold empty stomach and he would have gone home to have awful garbage fire sex he'd rather forget about through the migraines of the next day.

But now he was laughing, staring up and laughing nonsensically and couldn't help but wonder if this whole situation was nothing more than some sick cosmic joke. Yeah, it had to be. There was no other way. When the laughter left him enough to recognize the hand in front of his face, he reached up and grasped at the hand offered to him, pulling himself up, wanting to be bitter, wanting to take that hand and crush it in a vice grip, but...nope, nothing.

Just the stupid grin that cut right through his stupid face and he had to lean over his legs long enough to pant something awful, catch his breath. Yeah he needed a smoke.  So that was just what Grisham did, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out the bent and half-crushed cigar hanging from his lips, stuffing it into the corner and lighting it up with the arc lighter he'd had on hand.

"Because Adstreia is my city and I go wherever I damn well please, Kirk," he sighed with a dopey grin. He favored the cigar a while and took a long drag. "Wanna smoke? I got another. For sport."  The offer was open and he reached into this jacket to pull out another half-crushed cigar.  "And you, why bother breaking up a perfectly good fight? Not this one, this one was awful."

As the laughter died down they were left back with the reality of the bizarre circumstances: That they were just a pair of old guys who'd just punched each other's lights out over almost literal spilled milk. Didn't know each other, had no reason to fight, had no reason to be doing any of this. And while it didn't exactly make it awkward, it did remind Kirkley that sometimes the darndest things brought people together, and he wondered why tonight of all nights he was supposed to run into this guy.

He watched him light the cigar, arching an eyebrow as he wiped a bit of blood from his lip and shrugged, waving off the man's offer. Smoking was a habit he'd picked up once, realized was just bad in taste and generally annoying, and stopped.

"Your city?" He scoffed and barked out another harsh laugh. "Right, yeah, of course."

The very concept was hilarious to him; that this guy thought he owned anything just because he was a Commander. He might not've meant it literally, but in a way he might have. His home, his life, his job, his everything was probably here in Adstreia, in a city in a country overrun by abominations that cared nothing for the millions of lives resting under the power of their mechanized claws.

Fuckin' hell, Kirkley hated how dark he sounded sometimes.

He snorted, looking away for a moment as he licked his tongue over that favored lip before looking back at Grisham as he considered his question.

For the first time he got a real good look at him, and even in the dim lighting of the street at night they were standing in, he caught features in his eyes, the shape of his jawline, nose, and of course the color and texture of his hair that felt familiar. But his heart didn't skip the beat, there was no jolt when their eyes met, despite the odd sense of familiarity.

"You reminded me of someone I used to know."

He said it kind of suddenly, the words tumbling out of his mouth as his smile faded just a bit, and then he quickly looked away, blinking the memories and feelings of Bifrost away as he let out a breath.

"That and I didn't really see the reason in getting all upset about an accident. Dude might've paid for a new bottle if ya just asked yknow." He smirked as he looked over at Grisham again, slipping a hand into one of his jeans pockets. "Gonna head home now and stay out of trouble?"
