Forgotten Memories; Remembered Once More. [El Rhi!]
« on: September 17, 2015, 01:37:34 pm »
There was a certain air about the ruins, something Kruz'Iik couldn't quite place, but also found immense pleasure in. A place like this, especially on a forgotten planet like Orias, was absolutely charged with the energies of those who'd come before. A place where the leftover energies of its inhabitants had gone untouched and seeped into the stones, absorbed into the carvings and statues.

Kruz'Iik himself had been in a peaceful mood lately, perhaps even a kind one! Recently, he'd lapsed into his darker habits, as most Mindshifters did when feeding time came, but his resulting meal had left him so charged, so completely satisfied, that he didn't think he'd have to feed for the next ten years!

The ruins were somewhat advanced. Stone constructions, but incredibly precise. Seemed more like an aesthetic choice as a species, rather than their actual level of technology. They were fairly isolated, too. Located in a crater and hidden beneath mountains of rock. The only way to access it was a giant opening in the side of the crater mountain, hidden from satellite view via rocky outcroppings and such. The remnants of an ancient road lead up to it.

While Kruz'Iik enjoyed exploring the ruins and slowly discovering all there was to know about the place, it didn't come without consequences. He made no efforts to conceal himself, so a presence as powerful as his would definitely have set off any sensors, if they were on the planet. He'd already been there for a few weeks, too.

Fascinating. So Orias once supported life, Nuri thought as she drove her cruiser along the rocky terrain, heading in the direction her sensors were pinging. The land was full of ditches and obstacles, but the vehicle was meant for this kind of surface and, while bumpy, it went smoothly. Also convenient was that Orias contained oxygen. Not as much as Earth, but Nuri found it roughly equivalent to the atmosphere of a high mountain peak. It was there, but thin.

She got winded quicker over seemingly nothing, but at least she'd trained for this before she'd arrived. She'd brought an oxygen tank with her just in case; better to be safe than risk randomly passing out!

If all went well, though, she wouldn't be needing it.

Nuri glanced down at her screen. The anomaly was just over the ridge up ahead, putting out an unprecedented amount of psionic static. She took a deep breath as she crested it, still not feeling like she was filling her lungs as much as she needed, and kept on driving. She'd opted to go alone to be as noninvasive as possible, but she still had a com line open to her crew in case anything went wrong.

Hopefully, it didn't! Orias was a dead planet, after all, dry as a bone.

Yet the anomaly was coming from that cluster of ruins...

Perhaps an old relic, Nuri thought, excited at the prospect of discovering something new on a planet that had already been picked apart by explorers. Something overlooked by previous crews, come to life again!

Or it could be aliens, the other part of her brain warned, the part that remembered all the sci-fi horror shows she watched. Better wear your helmet, so you don't wind up carrying its eggs.

Ew.

Bringing her cruiser to a stop, she slipped on her helmet just in case and slipped out of the vehicle, dressed in sturdy boots and a jumpsuit. She slipped her PDA into her pocket, and took out her scanner.

With a deep breath, she headed into the ruins, watching as the blip of the scanner steadily increased--and was soon off the charts.

Krus'Iik was perfectly aware of the presence of science personnel on the planet. On this planet's lifeless surface, their collective brainpower and intelligence shone like a temptingly delicious beacon. Unfortunately, Kruz'Iik couldn't eat his fill. The risk of discovery by the human race could be disastrous. Humans weren't known for their patience or understanding, so naturally, the discovery of a race of nigh-omnipotent mind-predators had the potential to be quite cataclysmic.

Conversely, it was also this shining beacon that obscured the single flame approahing him. He wasn't aware of it until it was right at the entrance of the ruins. Kruz'Iik himself wasn't particularly used to being caught unawares like this, but he coped regardless.

His signature remained, but he faded away from the room to hide and materialize a physical form, and to wait for whatever came through. The psionic displacement would play hell on Nuri's equipment, but after a few moments, it'd pick up a single, concentrated point.

[Omg smack me I thought I'd replied to this ages ago but I forgot to bookmark it ahhhh!!]

With a frown, Nuri smacked the side of her scanner. It was going all sorts of crazy, and crazier still as she entered the ruins.

"C'mon," she muttered, giving it a shake. "C'mon, don't do this now!" She was so close! So close to tracking whatever it was she was tracking! But she couldn't exactly follow the signature if her equipment wouldn't--

Oh.

There it went.

Just like that, it cleared up, and a single, bright point manifested on her screen. Squinting her eyes at it skeptically, Nuri turned in a slow circle, testing her connection, and when the point remained unwavering, she let out a slow breath so as not to fog her visor and started toward it.

Must be some sort of electrical interference, she told herself as she walked. Maybe from my equipment, or my vehicle. It's the first time in who knows how long that any foreign bodies have been to this place...

Nothing to be worried about!

[*smacks* It's okay, I forgive you!]

The point on her scanner seemed to move ever so slowly, and if she followed it, she'd find herself entering the long-ruined complex' hallways. Ahead of her, a shadow danced across the walls, probably an effect from her flashlight, but if she had the acumen to make it out, she'd see that it was a quick glimpse of a nebulous, vaguely humanoid shadow.

And even as he lured her, he probed at her mind, reaching with his own power to scan at the surface and gauge her defenses, her willpower, and how resistant she'd be to his illusions. Had he been hungry when she came across him, there was a decent chance that she would already be drained.

Follow it, she did.

And unfortunately, she didn't even see the quick flash of shadow.

She was too busy being in sheer awe of the structure she was in, angling her flashlight so she could marvel at its architecture, and so the camera inside her helmet could capture some good images. But when she returned her focus to her scanner, she saw with puzzlement that...the point was moving?

But...that couldn't be possible.

Don't worry, it can't be aliens, she told herself, swallowing as she watched the point move. You're not reading any heat signals, or even any motion signals that could be triggered by organic life. It's just the point itself that's moving... And that point was probably, in actuality, completely stable. It was probably just the readings that were faulty, from the way the equipment interacted with the environment. This was new ground, after all.

And so she pushed onward, down the hall, slowly closing in on that beacon.

After a few minutes down the tunnel, it opened up into a vast, dome-shaped chamber, with smooth walls. Directly ahead of her there was a circular archway with what appeared to be a massive set of doors, sealed shut with age.

The entire chamber had intricate hieroglyphics, and given their potential age, it was a wonder that they had remained so well preserved. Most were abstract heiroglyphics only known to the original carvers, but a precious few depicted strange, almost ant-like creatures with four legs and four arms, performing mundane tasks.

By the nature of the tasks, it was clear that these creatures were at least as advanced as humanity, if not more.
