In-Depth Stuff

Physical Description

He has what can only be described as an ‘average’ body type and height, neither excessively muscled or particularly skinny, and about as tall as anyone else in a crowd might be.  Even his face is bland in a semi-handsome way, with regular, even features, and marred by the black eye patch he wears over his right eye.  Under the eye patch is scar tissue surrounding his entire eye area, and an artificial eye with a white iris and no pupil - his own personal choice.  His other eye is naturally purple, a family trait that probably descends from some kind of long-ago genetic tampering.

His skin tone is naturally one of a light tan, freckles appearing on his arms and on his cheeks just below his eyes when they’ve been exposed to the sun too long.

His medium brown hair is cut in a generic short pseudo-bob style chosen particularly for its ease of maintenance and the fact it can shadow his eyes if he feels he needs to add a little psychological distance between himself and anyone he’s speaking to - more for his own mental benefit than anything else.

He has the usual array of minor scars on his body from a life spent wandering from one place to another, a scar on the back of his right hand, and a small birthmark on his left arm that looks as though someone dripped brown ink onto his skin.

His clothing tends to be more functional than attractive, and varies depending on where he is and what he’s doing.  He usually favours a semi-military look, enough to move more easily intimidated people out of his way, but not enough to attract anything more than the idle attention of the real military, an organisation he would rather not annoy.  He always keeps a rough green cloth with him too that can be wrapped around his lower face in order to either keep sand and dust from his mouth or nose, or equally can be used to obscure his appearance.

Personality

Generally quite introverted and serious, Paradigm wouldn’t recognise humour if it leapt up and hit him in the face - although he would probably try to hit it back.  The same applies for sarcasm.  Something about it just seems to pass him by, despite the occasional attempt by others to ‘teach’ him how to understand it.  His own attempts at making jokes or affecting sarcasm are usually equally poor.

One passing acquaintance once remarked “that man couldn’t be any more rigid if you shoved a poker up his arseâ€? and, whilst he finds that to be a little unfair, it’s true that it is not easy for him to relax, either alone or in company - especially if the company in question happens to be sitting to his right.  Having no vision at all on that side, he becomes intensely uncomfortable if he can’t see what is happening beside him.  As a result, he tries to look around a lot, and usually positions himself in places where walls or partitions prevent people from sitting on that side of him; if that isn’t possible, he puts as many things as possible on that side so that no one can sit within arms reach of him.

He knows that now it would be possible for his eye to be replaced with a new, fully functioning alternative, but finds the idea strangely abhorrent, for reasons he cannot entirely understand himself.  He puts some of it down to the fact that his lack of vision has been a part of him for so long, and has defined who he was both as a child and an adult, that repairing the problem would be denying who he was.  But there is something else that bothers him too about the concept, something he can’t quite place his finger on, and that upsets him.  As such, he refuses to speak on the subject, and will usually try to change the topic of conversation to something less personal.  If anyone pushes the subject further and manages to get a response from him, it is guaranteed to be a lie.  Previous excuses have ranged from a wild animal attack to a spacecraft accident.

Should anyone try to actually touch his face or his eye area, he will try to bat their hands away.  The more they try, the more forceful he becomes, possibly culminating in him losing his temper.  This is a rare occurrence, however: Paradigm has a very good grip on his temper.

Weaknesses

Due to his missing eye, it is entirely possible that you could sit to his right, reach up with your left hand and hit him around the back of the head, and the first he would know of it would be the impact.

Whilst he can shoot with a good degree of precision, his accuracy decreases the further the distance because of his lack of depth perception.

Whilst usually reserved, spacecrafts and personal flying crafts can incite a surge of emotion in him: usually joy at the freedom the vehicles afford him.  This leads to him pushing the crafts ever harder, trying to pull every last little bit of power and speed from them.  This leads him to becoming reckless if he’s the only person in the craft, and could potentially lead him to eventually become a danger to others.

He is technically banned from piloting star crafts because of his refusal to be fitted with a working eye, although he frequently flouts the ban without incident - so far.  Although his recklessness could also be the reason he is banned…

His inability to gauge humour and sarcasm has landed him in trouble before.  It’s not a good idea to take offense at a sexist joke when the joker in question has several big guns…

Strengths

He has excellent control of spacecraft when he flies and can summon every last ounce of power and speed from one, performing some stunning manoeuvres if he needs to.  He loves the feeling of flight and the freedom it gives him, and this is what spurs him on to faster and more reckless speeds and actions.

Although his accuracy with a gun diminishes past 20 feet, he is both fast and accurate up to that distance and can shoot with confidence.  He prefers kneecaps, in that regard.

Likes

Mint; sunny days; good films; music; speed; long lazy mornings in a soft bed.

Dislikes

Nightmares; speed limits; people he deems to be idiots; excessive physical contact; particularly loud noises.

Magic/Abilities

None that he has ever been aware of; and would rather not find out if he had any.

Family

Mother and father, believed to be dead.

Friends

Foes

History

Born to parents who were considered wanderers even by nomad standards, Paradigm grew up far from cities and crowds, travelling the surfaces of Edanith.  Sometimes in groups and sometimes just with his parents, his early childhood passed in a barely remembered blur.

He was about seven or eight when he lost his eye, although many of the events before and after are a mystery to him.  He had been exploring the grounds of the encampment at the time, curious as small boys are, and only remembers being grabbed by the elder and dragged struggling up onto a platform.  The travellers were assembled in a ragged group before him; his parents were nowhere to be seen.  The elder announced something about him being a “paradigm of how it should be dealt withâ€? - the words stuck in his mind so well that he chose Paradigm as a name when it came to selecting his adult title.  Held down by two of the stronger men, all he can remember is some kind of rough metal mechanism that ripped his right eye from his face, taking a good chunk of the surrounding skin with it.  Events after that were a blur, but someone patched up his skin as best they could and the remaining scar stayed with him ever since.

Much later, when he asked his parents about it, they looked away and told him that he should be thankful it was only his eye, not his life.  Beyond that, they were silent on the subject.

At the age of 14 he left his parents and ventured out into the wider world, drawn towards the cities of Edanith like a moth to the flame.  There, he worked as a 'runner', couriering items around the city and taking packages unnoticed on a boy that would otherwise be suspicious on a man to various parts of the city.  He never asked questions about their contents, valuing his other eye too much to risk any kind of wrath.

At the age of 16, he stowed away on a spacecraft and travelled to Aedolis.

Initially fascinated by the cities and culture, he had his right hand chipped and set to work in the city, immediately joining the lowest caste and resuming the job he had done in Edanith.  He remained there for five years before the wandering gene resurfaced in him.  Digging the chip out of his hand, he stowed away with a couple of other escapees from the city and fled to the Seruna space stations.

He has stayed there ever since, flitting between Libra, Cancer and Edanith itself.  These days he takes on a greater variety of jobs: not just couriering, but spacecraft repair work should anyone require additional hands, even being a bodyguard on occasions - although that work is few and far between for a man who tries not to kill people unless he absolutely has to.  His favourite kind of employment is shuttling people and packages across from planet to space station in hired crafts.

He promised himself that when he has the time, he will try to find out why his eye was removed from his head so unceremoniously; strangely, he has yet to find the time.

Commentary

If this reads oddly…  it’s because the previous version I was typing crashed and I had to try to remember it all again!  Must remember to save more often...
