{PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION}

Despite being tall for his age, Masu isn’t that intimidating. He’s a little on the thin side and doesn’t have much muscle mass to speak of. But he can lift heavy things with little effort and he can run long distances without running out of breath. Since his brother, Nasu, was (and still is) a role-model for him, Masu has always tried to stay in shape and stay healthy in order to keep up with his brother and try to be on the same level as him. He has short white-blond hair that somewhat spikes out from his head with a featherlike consistency, and clear bright blue eyes. His skin is pale, but not unhealthily so. Being that Sikuria is mostly in the shadow of mountains during the day, direct light rarely shines into the city, and Masu didn’t (and still doesn’t) care much for tanning beds. He also has a spattering of pale freckles along his cheekbones that are only slightly darker than the rest of his skin.

{PERSONALITY}

Masu at first glance is a quiet, unassuming, sweet kid. He tends to keep his opinions to himself and internalize much of what he feels. It takes something big to get him to talk about his feelings, and usually, he’ll only talk to someone he really trusts. He’s a stalwart defender, especially of his family, and he’ll do his best to shield them from problems, whether external or internal, whether his own or someone else’s. He doesn’t want to bring shame to his family, especially his older brother, who is a Pilot. He’s a helpful sort, as well, often going out of his way to make it easier on someone else, and especially for his parents. Having wanted to be a Pilot like his brother, he was disappointed when he failed testing the first time around, but now that he’s in the Candidate Program, he wants to excel and prove that he can be useful. He wants to be useful, but he also isn’t the type to let others walk all over him in order to be such. He will fight back if pushed into the corner, and he can be vicious about it.

Fun Facts:
- His retrocognition is triggered by others’ emotions, and via his empathy, he can view their memories as if he was actually living them himself; he’s learning how to control this
- Is an absolute fan of Tsuka Seiteki the manga artist and has collected just about every single one of her comics
- Has two goldfish, Soufflé and Mousse, that Nasu won for him at a festival five years ago. The fish are pretty much immortal, he’s sure, and currently his parents and brother are caring for them while he’s away
- Despite having pet goldfish named after sweet desserts, Masu actually can’t stand sugar. He prefers salty snacks, and is responsible for naming his mother’s chihuahua Popcorn

{SPECIAL ABILITIES}

Telepathy - A rather powerful telepath, Masu can connect to several minds at once, and speak to them at great distances. However, this doesn’t include his empathic retrocognition, as he can only connect to a single person at a time, not including the single observer whose role is to act as a trigger for his empathic retrocognition.

Empathy - A powerful empath, Masu can both project feelings onto other people and he can receive feelings from other people. Combining his empathy with his retrocognition, Masu can delve into the memories of others and live the memories as if they are actually happening in the present.

Retrocognition - Though normally the ability to perceive events that have happened in the past, Masu’s is a specialized version. He can combine this ability with his empathy, allowing him to perceive a person’s memories and live them as if he was actually there in that moment when the memory was being formed. Along with this, he needs a handler, someone who will connect with him both to view the memory and also to act as a trigger on the outside.

{RELATIONSHIPS}

Nasuhito Kagura - His older brother, who is a Pilot and combat operative. He loves his brother dearly, and doesn’t want to embarrass him by screwing up in the Candidate Program.

Parents - His mother and father own a convenience store that opens in the late afternoon and stays open all night and into the early hours of morning in Sikuria. They are both very proud of their sons, although they now worry about Masu, since he’s now begun his Candidacy.

{BACKGROUND NOTES}

Masu was born the second son to parents that absolutely doted upon him and his elder brother. When his elder brother was drafted into the Pilot program, Masu couldn’t have been happier for Nasu and began to want to follow in his brother’s footsteps. However, the first time he was screened was at age thirteen, and he failed the screening. Dejected, Masu began helping out in his parents’ convenience store, uncertain what his future would be. Shortly after his fourteenth birthday, however, a group of teenage boys, boys whom Masu had had an altercation with earlier that day, came into his parents’ store that evening, and after a few minutes of being perfect customers, for some reason began to pick on Masu, who was stocking shelves at the time. The boys began to shove him, pushing him around and calling him names. Masu strove to ignore it; after all he’d gotten worse from his brother. The commotion brought Masu’s mother into the fray, and then one of the boys shoved her, as well. That Masu simply couldn’t abide.

Masu was the one who threw the first punch, but the one was all he was able to do. The boys ganged up on him and began to beat him, busting his lip and giving him a black eye. Once they had him on the floor, the boys began to kick him in the back and ribs. The only thing Masu can really remember about that is his mother calling for Nasu to come help, and a sudden tingling feeling in his extremities and a tightness in his mind. When one of the boys stepped back to reposition himself, Masu managed to escape a slight distance and meet the boy’s eyes. The moment their eyes met, the boy suddenly froze and became white as a sheet. Masu turned his attention to another of the boys, and that boy suddenly fell backwards into the shelves screaming. Another grabbed at his face and began to claw at his eyes.

Before any more damage could be done, Nasu arrived and used his own ability on his little brother, knocking Masu unconscious. When Masu awoke, he was again tested, and found to have empathy and retrocognition, along with the ability to combine the two skills, and, of course, traditional telepathy. Now he’s begun his first year at the ATC, and though he misses home, he’s determined not to disappoint his brother.
