Ith

A neko or a cat girl is a type of kemonomimi popularized by Japanese anime.  The ith are not oversexed cat girls that strap jetpacks to their legs and fly around killing Nazis.  I will admit the jetpack thing sounds pretty damn cool.  They don't have tails or animal ears on the top of their heads unless they are into wearing cat ear headbands and are big in the kawaii movement.  They could also be into some kinky stuff that just might make it seem as if they have a tail.  It could happen based on their societal norms.

I did try in their creation to separate them from most rubber-forehead aliens despite their humanoid appearance.  They are comparable to humans because humanity and the animals we have here on Earth are currently our only point of reference.  Often I find it is difficult to write an antagonist, protagonist, or supporting character into a story when I find I can't relate to them.  I say that again before trying to make alien jellyfish creatures that live within the atmosphere of gas giants.

Like other races on the forum there is wiggle room.  Most things can be changed because here I am describing the average.  There will be variants and outcasts among any large population.  I've likely forgotten a few things as their creation has expanded over the years.  If you find something unanswered and would like some guidance you are more than welcome to just ask me about it privately.

  • General Characteristics
The traits in this section are shared by all ith.  They are a race of carbon based humanoids with some feline features.  Their home world is called Ithica.  They live an average of two hundred years and are omnivores with carnivorous tendencies.

They all have a binary cardiovascular system.  This means they have two hearts like a Gallifreyan minus the plot armor and ability to get out of any jam with a sonic screwdriver.  I take it back.  I love Doctor Who.  The ith also have two separate livers.  Don't be alarmed.  They breath oxygen and have red blood.

All ith have pronounced canines and pointed ears.  These traits are not grossly exaggerated.  Think less Deedlit from Record of Lodoss Wars and more like a Vulcan from Star Trek.  The teeth are slightly less pronounced than represented in the role of Dracula done by Luke Evans in Dracula Untold.  It's not the best movie I admit but both of these traits are still noticeable when compared to a human.  Their noses tend to be slightly broader at the bridge and their hair and skin color ranges across all the norms for humans.

On average an ith is considerably stronger than a human of similar sex and weight due to their evolutionary development.  They have an exceptionally powerful endocrine and circulatory system.  They are capable of amazing feats of strength and stamina when under extreme stress.  This means they are often underestimated physically due to their height.  The truth of the matter is that an ith's compact frame and strength affords him or her an unparalleled explosive agility.

All ith have wider hips, thicker lower bodies, and wiry upper bodies.  Think Kim Kardashian, without the boobs.  This affords them better balance and lower body strength.  The wider hips have the benefit of allowing easier childbirth for ith females.

The most noticeable thing about an ith when you first see them is their eyes.  Their eyes are human like and have a similar anatomy.  No thermal or x-ray vision I'm afraid but their eyes do change color with their mood.  These colors range across metallic shades from gold to platinum either appearing flat or molten.  The do have better low light vision than a human but their eyes reflect light like a dog or cat.  They have a light-reflecting surface known as the tapetum lucidum located between the optic nerve and the retina.  It can be kinda creepy if you see just their eyes staring back at you from the dark.

These people have four fingers on each hand, one thumb and three fingers.  They also have four toes on each foot. Their nails on their toes and fingers are thick, black, and hard enough to be used as claws if need be.  They tend to stand and walk upon the ball of their foot, raising their heel off the ground at rest or while moving as if they are always wearing heels.

Very few ith do not have psionic capability.  Those that do not are named the bodhar and the condition is likened to being deaf or blind.  The ith refer to psionic ability as esper and have a registration and scale of various abilities and strengths similar to the Aedolis and their pilot program.  Registration and the bodhar will be further covered in the cultural section.

The vast majority of ith have a number of developed organs in their brain, brain-stem, and throughout their spinal column that allows them to communicate via telepathy across short distances, distances that would be within human earshot.  This is their primary means of communication but they can speak.  The ith don't have strong vocal cords.  They can't scream or speak loudly and often resort to technology to enhance their voice if verbal communication is a must.

They are also naturally empathic and constantly detect surface emotions of the sentient or near-sentient beings they are near.  This can be a serious problem at times as emotions can be contagious to them.  Most ith develop weak telekinesis and can lift small objects, up to twenty kilograms.  They tend to develop stronger abilities with age and experience.  These abilities are not restricted to telepathy and telekinesis but do represent the lion's share within their population.  Females tend to be stronger espers than males.  The ith normally can't use magic.

Perhaps the most unusual power all ith but the bodhar have is that they are all teletechnics.  They have access to a mechanism that enables them the capacity and potential to develop other psionic powers they come into near or direct contact with.  New abilities gained through the mechanism must be honed through practice and training.  The mechanism itself allows for this and even magnifies and augments these powers.  This makes them highly adaptable and powerful psychics.

They don't sleep but require a much shorter period of relaxation or meditation to maintain their peak mental and physical condition.  When they do not get this time to unwind they will suffer as a human would without sleep.  A combination of elasticity, flexibility, and toughness of their skin allows them to better survive and maintain consciousness in low pressure environments and in vacuum.  This allows them to survive and operate in total vacuum for a very short time without a suit before they fall into a sort of hibernation.  If they are recovered quickly during this period they regain consciousness and recover on their own with little to no medical attention.  It is no more pleasant for them than it would be for a human and no ith would choose to take a walk outside a space ship without a suit on.

The ith do better in stronger gravity and pressure than most humans.  Both species have a similar temperature survival ranges but the ith can weather high energy radiation slightly better.

  • Sexual Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism is the differences in appearance between males and females of the same species.  Here the ith don't have carbon copy sexes or a single one like the star elves.  They have two different and distinct sexes like humans.

Patterns of dark spots appear during and after puberty on both males and females.  For both these spots grace the base of the neck, across on either side to their under-ears, across their shoulders, and down their spine.  These spots appear on a female's lower abdomen to the base of their breasts and below their belly buttons.  The females do have breasts with functioning mammary glands though they are often smaller than the breasts of human females of a similar weight and height.

Some but not all females have dark patches on either side of their nose just below their eyes.
The ith do not develop pubic, chest, or underarm hair though the males can develop facial hair.
Females tend to be smaller and more flexible than males.  The sexes posses different sexual organs which are similar to their human counterparts if not slightly smaller.

  • Reproduction and Growth
In a biological sense there is not much difference between the human reproductive cycle and that of the ith.  Females carry the child longer, twelve months.  Females can choose to get pregnant or not during coitus.  They can also postpone pregnancy and abort the male's sperm before that time if the environment is not conducive to raising a child.  Twins are rare and multiple births beyond that are unheard of.

Babies are often breast fed by the mother and grow into an adult at about the age of one hundred and five solar cycles which is the equivalent of eighteen years.

  • Height and Weight
Their average height is significantly shorter for both males and females when compared to the human species.  This represents the average adult height.  In the extreme cases a full foot of variation either way for both males and females has been recorded.  Some environmental factors during growth and the individual's lineage may account for differences in height.

As a consequence of their evolutionary development under such punishing gravity they have thicker bones and denser muscle mass.  The average ith tends to weigh more than one would expect.  Environmental, hereditary, and social factors do influence weight but it is difficult for the species to become obese or overweight given the same social and biological factors.  They tend to be about thirty percent heavier than a human of similar height and sex.

136.24 lbs or 61.80 kg - Average Male Weight
4 ft 10 in or 147.32 cm - Average Male Height
112.19 lbs or 50.89 kg - Average Female Weight
4 ft 5 in or 134.62 cm - Average Female Height

  • Society
Their society is one of matriarchy. In this social organizational form the mother or oldest female heads the family. Descent and relationship are determined through the female line. Their government leaders are also all females.  There are equal rights for the males and they can rise to positions of authority outside of the government.  In general females are better paid and tend to advanced more quickly to places of authority than males.

Personal growth, mental aptitude, and physical fitness is of high value in their society. A massive amount of pressure is put on young adults to produce healthy offspring. Their society is sexually free and young adults tend to have many sexual partners. Only when a female chooses to become pregnant does the mated pair become monogamous.  Such a decision is often discussed by the pair before the female chooses to become pregnant.  Often it is the female that makes the proposal.  There is no marriage custom in ith society but partners with children tend to stay monogamous until death.

Sexual relationships that can't potentially result in children are extremely frowned upon. This includes same sex relationships and relationships with other species but just because they are frowned upon does not mean they don't happen.  Some are more excepting of such behavior than others.

Self expression through hair dye, tattoos, and piercings of the face and other body parts are excepted and widespread.  Both males and females will often have their backs or arms tattooed with important family lineage and personal accomplishments that warrant display.  Hair is often braided and beaded.  Sometimes the hair is decorated with small objects such as feathers.  Jewelry tends to be functional so as to not catch.  Hair style varies wildly from shaved to extremely long for both males and females depending on an ith's tuath and the place they grew up.

Despite their open and accepting view of sex, ith often dress fairly conservatively in clothing reminiscent of traditional Arabic attire if not more colorful minus the head and face covering.
Garments are often composed of a light and colorful fabric.

The desire to explore and discover burns hot within the ith creating a sort of wanderlust.  They must always see what is beyond the next mountain or within the next star system.  For many it is an obsession and often young adults will venture to unexplored space to live among aliens just to learn and discover something few or no ith has.

  • Tuath
A tuath is an extended family unit or house of the ith people.  This social system was rebuilt as the race evolved and is now known as the tuath system.  There are currently five primary tuath within ith society and many smaller tuath pledge loyalty to these large houses.  There are hundreds of different tuath and a surname does not coincide with the name of one's tuath.  The primary tuath are Cairrge Brachaidhe, Cenél Aedha, Muintir Dalachain, Síol Faolcháin, Uí Fiachrach Arda Srátha.

These houses are often bounded by region, continent, or even planet and often have different genetic markers such as skin pigment, hair color, and specialized psionic talents.  Ith do intermix blood between tuath.  There are no laws that make such unions illegal.  Often children will identify with the mother's house.  Tuath are not segregated but ith often have stronger social bonds with members of their own tuath or related tuath.  The tuath system also plays a huge role in ith government.

  • Language and Names

The ith native language is very similar to Irish (Gaeilge), a Goidelic language.  It sounds musical when an ith speaks their native tongue.  Some words are throaty but the sound is softened due to the race's weak vocal cords.

Ith names tend to have Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Breton, Cornish, and Norwegian influences.  Some Arabic and Jewish influences can be found in rare instances though the most common names among these two examples are not common for the ith.  Names like Muhammad, Ali, and Omar are unheard off.

First introductions are often made to include the name of the the ith's tuath but afterwards the 'of tuath' is often dropped for ease of communication.

Sample Names: Kalin Ytiri, Aileen Daley, Aodh Caomhánach, Nessa Farrell, Orlaith Mollown, Cormac Mac Airt, Alan Brennan, Noel Mag Aonghuis

  • Religion
Chailís

The religious worship of three divine entities some ith believe created existence through their dance and song. These three supreme deities are worshiped under the names of Arden, Eluv, and Olc. Chailís was the primary religion of the ith people until approximately one century ago. Over the last hundred standard years Chailís has given way to An Conair as the predominate doctrine of the ith people. Evil or immoral forces are thought to be universal invaders influenced by unfathomable, ancient, and terrible entities. These entities were entreated by Olc.

Arden is commonly represented as a male and is described as the being that brought time and space into being. Time had no meaning other than to be observed by the three and space was completely empty. It was Eluv, represented as a female who created all the things that occupied it. She created the energy and matter while Arden and Olc worked with her to establish underlying rules to govern what had been created.

It was then Olc who influenced the creation, often represented as a male and would govern destruction. Without destruction, creation would have no meaning. Without death, life would have no meaning. Without Olc all would be still and static. Nothing would ever change and life would cease to be an experience.

In the end the story tells that Arden and Eluv fell in love, provoking Olc's jealousy. So it was that Olc entreated with extra-universal entities to bring true evil into our existence. While Olc did engage in this evil act the figure is not reviled nor is he considered evil.

Ith that worship the Chailís are known to be more aggressive than those that follow the way of An Conair.

An Conair

'The Way' or 'The Path' is a unique philosophy similar in some ways to Zen Buddhism. An Conair is by far the most popular and widespread ith doctrine. At its core the doctrine centers around a belief that every sentient and self aware being are actually the same omniversal, omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient entity.

Practitioners believe they give up access to the aspects of the whole to live a single life. Regardless of what transpired during an individual's life they will live infinite number of different lives ceaselessly, experiencing anew with each new life without the lenses of experience earned during past lives. They believe that once they die they will experience a new and different individual life.

In reference this means that individuals practicing this philosophy believe that others they meet, regardless of sex or race are themselves. By this philosophy and the associated logic it would make no sense to take hostile action against another self aware being. It also makes no logical sense for a practitioner of An Conair to fear death or experience xenophobia. Many negative emotional states are dulled as a consequence.

Heavy value is placed on culture and the needs of the many over the few. Martyrdom and self sacrifice is not uncommon by practitioners. Practitioners are not pacifists as there is an understanding that immoral actions negatively affect the experience of life for everyone.

Other

Very few ith worship another deity but it is not unheard of.  There are monotheists and atheists in their society.  It is not impossible for an ith abroad and among aliens to pick up alien religious beliefs.  Meditation and martial arts training makes up a large part of any ith's life though any particular ith will go about these practices differently depending on what philosophy or religion they follow.

  • Esper

Ith children develop the ability to communicate via telepathy and awareness through empathy at an earlier age.  On average this is gained along side their ability to understand language.  Telekinetic talents and their innate teletechnic abilities do not commonly develop until the onset of puberty.  A young adult often has their ability tested and graded though this is thought to be akin to a physical examination.

They separately classify abilities that differentiate between the physical world, λ (lambda), and the inner spaces of the mind(s), ζ (zeta) and scale these specializations separately.  Most ith are rated at level four zeta/lambda α (alpha) or simply 4α.  At this level they have the ability to manipulate a mass of twenty kilograms at some range and in line of sight.  They posses a sixth sense that allows them to sense the use of psionic abilities at close range and can communicate openly and without further specialized ability with a level one and above.  Teletechnic ability is not tested.

A level one is receptive to psionic input without specialized ability.  They are alive.  Machines and bodhar are considered level zero.  A psionic individual would need some technological help or specialized ability to communicate with a level zero.  Bodhar are often made state wards.  They are treated like cripples and quite often do not produce offspring.  Much of the time they find living among aliens more palatable because of this treatment.
