Not that Drew knows this, but Kai is a member of The initiative. He has a blank chip, which he earned through providing help on their machines. In fact the members of the group are a big reason why he has the machine know how that he does.
He was tired of being constantly under the threat of being found out though, so he said goodbye to the group to live on the Sassy Juice. It wasn't that he minded eating out of vending machines and helping other run a ways, but he need more for himself that just hiding.
