Some things are better left untouched [M]
« on: September 08, 2015, 01:31:26 am »
A massive wrecked spaceship the size of a small moon appeared in the main solar system suddenly and without explanation. The salvagers who first report it nickname their find 'the Hoard of Matthias', after the crew member who first spotted it on sensors.

But as the planetary governments and prospectors from Thanatos and countless freelancers investigated the monumental wreck further and deeper, an entirely different name for it comes into use: the Sepulcher.

Hundreds of various alien corpses were found in its most accessible outer layers and turned out not to be one ship, but many.

Countless crafts rolled and mangled together with clumps of asteroids and space debris, the lines between one piece and another blurred by centuries worth of damage and decay.

Even just a cursory exploration of the wreck turned up hundreds of artifacts and valuables. But exploring deeper than the surface quickly proved the area to be trecherous.

The construction, honeycombed with sealed vaults and tunnel-like corridors, was not entirely unoccupied. Reports of feral, predatory alien creatures, ancient robotic guardians, traps, unstable pathways... and even bizarre psychic phenomenon, what some claimed to be the silent ghosts of the Sepulcher's prior occupants were made. Scaring off many but drawing many in return who sought treasure and adventure.

The Sepulcher drew countless researchers, treasure-seekers, and unsavory characters to it's elusive shores. The powers that be have yet to try and lay claim to it, perhaps balancing the risks against the potential gains, but perhaps that's merely a matter of time. Until then, everyone would want a piece of the Sepulcher. Which often takes pieces, or more, of them in return.

Where it came from nobody knew. But it certainly had become an inspiration for many rumors since it arrived.

========

Waiting at the docks, were two children. Both pale, and simular in many ways; Twins. Waiting for the others whom they were supposed to enter the Sepulcher with. It would be their second mission which was to investigate as deep as they possibly could. Fearless the two waited to follow their orders. Something they have been basicly programmed to do and retrieve what would maybe seem useful to their company.

The expression of the two children was almost empty. No sense of joy, not exited for the upcoming thrill that was coming. Just waiting.

Someone swore about having cut himself on some tools. Something that cought the attention of the girl whom at the sight of the blood gave a creepy smile.

''Rosalie. Do not scare the people.'' Joseph spoke.
''Yes brother.'' Rosalie replied calmly and instead made some pebbles float with a mere glance and let some orbit around one like planets in a solar system did.

As she let the pebbles orbit she tilted her head from the left to the right over and over again and sang a simple song.

''We lay my love and I beneath the weeping willow.
But now alone I lie and weep beside the tree.
Singing "Oh willow waly" by the tree that weeps with me.
Singing "Oh willow waly" till my lover return to me.
We lay my love and I beneath the weeping willow.
But now alone I lie. Oh willow I die, oh willow I die.''

when she song ended she turned her hand into a fist and all the pebbles turned into dust making her giggle.

Personally, Jesse Rhodes never thought much of the station of Cancer. The place was much too disorganized for somebody who'd grown up in a spaceship, much too chaotic. With a spaceborne existence came an inherent need for neatness, and a deep knowledge of where everything was, and where it was supposed to go. Jesse was far from refined, but one didn't need to be refined to be organized.

Regardless of his personal opinions of the station, he was here on business. And as he pulled into one of Cancer's many harbors, he scanned the docks for the people he was bringing along with him. The ship's scavenging sensors pulled up simultaneous scans of the docks in multiple spectrums, from magnetic to thermal, and when he located the twins, he set his ship to dock next to them, and put his feet up onto the dashboard.

The Lindy-Lou gracefully pulled in next to Rosalie and Joseph, coming to a stop as the docking seals came into place and the docking tube attached to his ship. Things were quiet for a few seconds, before the door to the docking tube opened, and Jesse was standing there with Highway looming over him from behind.

He doffed his hat, and crossed his arms, looking the two twins over. To be frank, he'd hardly expected children when he hired on a pair of mercenaries, but the fact that they were children, and awfully pale at that, only served to unnerve him more.

"You two Joseph and Rosalie?" he asked, and Highway scanned the two of them over.

''Correct.''Joseph said as he got on his feet. Number zero two. Codename Joseph reporting for duty.''

Rosalue simply finished another song.''ashes... ashes... all must die..'' she ended it with a giggle before she got on her feet too.''Number zero one, codename Rosalie. Reporting for duty.'' She spoke. It was not difficult to see something was certainly wrong or at the least unnatural with the two.

''I assume you are Jesse Rhodes. On behalf of Synergies, thank you for doing business with us.'' True, they were not exactly cheap but did had to follow almost every command given.

[Just letting you know, Highway's picture is on Jesse's profile, if you want to know what the robot looks like]

"Right..."

He didn't need that creepy bit of sing-song to know that these two chilled him down to the bone. Fortunately, Highway was a much less sympathetic machine, so he regarded the two twins with the usual robotic joviality.

"Greetings, ZeroOne and ZeroTwo. On behalf of Rhodes Scavenging SP, I welcome you to--"

"Stuff it, Highway."

The robot immediately shut up, and it idled a bit on its massive limbs.

"You program a robot to speak to suits once, and suddenly, everybody's a dignitary. You two happen to see a green-skinned woman around her, she's the third mercenary."

Finally locating her communication device, it being under the bed of all places (whatever was it doing there?), Briia finally got everything she needed just as the small spacecraft made to land at its destination. The space shuttle had been delayed for a couple hours at least, due to some minor malfunctions but it was quickly taken care of by the mechanics on board, the repairmen working quickly to get it all fixed and operational again. Two of the lights had ceased to function, thus making those areas too dark to see properly. The main issue was trying to locate spare energy reserves to fuel the light panels above.

Adjusting her longsword of power in its sheathe at her side, and shield in her left hand, Briia checked to make sure the crossbow was loaded with its ammo of withering properties. One bolt was already nocked and ready to go, while the rest were in a special steel capped tube at her side. She also had her energy gun on her. Check, check, check and check.

The General knocked on her door and asked her through the metal. "Are you ready to go Briia? We're just about to land." He asked this in their language of Tengni, the language of the Hatuni themselves.

"Yes, I think so. Just one second please." Briia gave everything a final once-over, including her armor and then opened the door to step out, saluting her superior as she did. "Ready as ever, Sir." she said with a firm expression on her face.

The General, his name being General Meslee, saluted her in turn and simply said, "Good." He had green skin just like Briia did, except his was a much darker tone. Short cut black hair mixed with yellow streaks contrasted with Briia's own dark green hair.

Briia has been tasked to not only acquire whatever components and parts she could find in the ruins of the massive structure called simply 'The Sepulcher', but also to serve as a mercenary for a spacer/scavenger man, along with two others. The briefing was very brief indeed, so that was really all she knew about them.

Heading down the short walkway to the first level of the 210 meter spaceship, the shuttle soon made its landing at the outer docks to the place, known as 'Fortune's Reprieve'. This was where she was to meet the others. Then from there, they would head down into the deeper parts of the ruins and whatever awaited in the darkness.

The interior of the ship opened and Briia stepped out with General Meslee wishing her good luck and to keep her communication device handy at all times. Nodding, she went over to the main area and saw her companions already there. The children or what looked like children, thoroughly surprised her. But upon closer inspection they seemed to be heavily engineered and modified, equipped with their own weaponry. One of them had layered pink hair while the other had a robotic arm. The other person had to be the scavenger who had hired her.

Going up to them, the Hatuni warrior made her presence known and introduced herself. "Diplomat and Fighter Briia Noven, at your service." she saluted the man with her free hand, switching easily to the common tongue.

The one thing that would strike others as to Briia's alien appearance was not just the odd color of her skin and hair, but also her overly large forehead. The Hatuni peoples all had really large foreheads, with their eyes located about 3/4 inch to one inch lower on their faces than a human's would be. As a result, their heads were a bit irregularly shaped but not too much so. Despite these features though, the rest of them looked human enough.

''It looks like she arrived.'' Joseph said calmly.

Rosalie and Joseph greeted Briia with their respectable research numbers and their codenames. They did leave out the thanks for doing business with them since it was not Briia who had hired them.

The twins were no strangers to alien lifeforms as they had been hired before secretly to remove a prisoner from a multi planet secure prison. It was their first mission even which was to free one of Synergies' employees and bring the things he had brought when being captured when he was shipping other research numbers. Being charged with smuggling people. The mission went great and had ended in a bloodfest since no witnesses were allowed.

Robots on the other hand, were a different story. Those at the lab were more like androids or built to be humanoid and mainly equipped with AI, so Highway was a point of curiosoty. At the least for Rosalie.

''Was it tought to talk to suits? Why teaching it to talk to clothing?'' she asked.

''I believe sister, he spoke of a metafor. Suits in these case meaning people who have achieved a high rank in society or a compagny.'' Joseph said and looked at Jesse.

''I see.'' Rosalie said simply stood up straight again

''With how many are we?'' Joseph asked.

"Timely, too," said Jesse, who turned to face the approaching warrior. Whatever she was, he couldn't quite place her. With her armor, sword, and green skin, Briia looked like she jumped straight off the cover of one of those cheesy space operas he'd seen on the Web.

Jesse turned to face Briia, to give her a greeting of his own, but Highway's head snapped over to face her direction, and once more, its voice started up.

"Greetings, Diplomat Noven! I--"

"I said shut up, Highway!"

The robot fell silent again, and it looked straight ahead once more. Jesse looked at it, as if making sure it'd stay quiet, before turning to address Briia again.

"I'm Jesse Rhodes, your employer for the evenin'," he said, and tipped his hat to her. "It's a pleasure."

He looked back to Joseph, and crossed his arms.

"It's just you, me, your sister, her, and my three robots. The operation ain't too big," he said, and he stepped back into the docking tube to go into his ship.

"Come along then, we ain't got all day."

Smiling at the exchange, Briia's demeanor fast changed back to a firm nod, a serious expression on her face once more. "And greetings as well, Highway." she saluted the robot.

Looking around at the group, she analyzed everyone with a careful eye. "Small operation indeed. I hope it will be enough."

At Jesse's insistence, she made her way to the ship as well looking back briefly at the two engineered 'children.' Although they looked more like teenagers to her eyes, from what Briia knew about the human lifespan.

"I agree, we should get moving. Lots to do after all." Adjusting her sword in its sheathe once more, Briia followed the scavenger man.

''Yes Master.'' The twins said in unisision.

They followed as well. Their expression actually blanc. There was no exitement or questioning. At the least, not until they got into the ship.

''Is Master looking for anything specific?'' Joseph asked.

Both twins looked around in the ship eyeing everything their eyes could behold. ''Joseph. Will I truely be alright by not sleeping into the salt water tank?'' Rosalie asked. Her brother simply reassured her she would be fine.

Jesse firmly believed that if he didn't pay any particular attention to the talking the siblings shared, he'd be able to pass the trip without hearing anything creepy. The little girl asking if she'd be alright sleeping outside of her tank, though?

Yeah, that was something he wasn't too keen on hearing.

Once they entered the Lindy-Lou, it was clear that Jesse was an old-fashioned spacer. While the place was an organized mess, but it was clear that everything had its place. For Jesse, this ship was his entire life, and that could clearly be seen in the way the place was decorated.

"Welcome aboard the Lindy-Lou. She ain't much, but she's a hardy girl. She'll get us to Sepulcher, no problem."

He turned to look at Joseph.

"I'll give you a run-down of our objectives once we're spaceborne. For now, get comfortable with the place."

Jesse turned to address the mercenaries. He pointed to a door across the room, marked by a pair of red streaks going from top to bottom.

"That door leads to the secondary quarters. Briia, your room's the first one to the left. You twins have the second one to the right. If you have any questions, you're free to join me in the cockpit."

And with that, Jesse headed through a door at his right. The Lindy-Lou was not a large vessel, by any means. The thing could be crewed by four men, something Jesse manages to do by himself with the aid of three robots. Highway remained in the room with the mercenaries, its single red eye staring at them.

"Understood." Briia took her leave then, heading to the indicated door with the red marks and opened it.

The hallway beyond was pretty short, with the aforementioned doors on the left and right. Briia headed to the left one and opened it. She would go check her quarters out first, get situated and then join Jesse in the cockpit after that.

The robot didn't disturb her in the slightest, considering her people's military sometimes deployed massive metal constructs measuring well over fifty hands or feet tall on some of their more dangerous missions. The large scale ones that is. At any rate, she bid Jesse a brief goodbye salute and headed to the room to look around. The twins were a little unsettling but they too were not that unnerving for her to deal with. After all, enemies with major psionic prowess or weapons training that rivaled deities themselves were far more of a concern than some odd comments here and there made by either of the siblings or the strange 'aura' they gave off, if aura was even the correct word for it. Briia was really only concerned that they would be able to hold their own for what was inevitably to come. They seemed to exude strength in that area, so she thought no more on it for the time being.

Joseph thanked Jesse and headed towards the room assigned to him and his sister. Rosalie sat down on the bed. ''Fluffy...'' she said simply before getting on her feet again.

Joseph simply but down their stuff. ''Prepare for sleep.'' Joseph said on a calm tone. Rosalie simply took off her sleek suit. Litterly not wearing anything underneath. Although some metal plug entries were visable on her spine and hands. She laid down on the bed and after Joseph sang a coule of words she fell asleep soundlessly.

Joseph checked their quarters a little more before joining Jesse again in the cockpit.

When Joseph joined Jesse in the cockpit, he'd be able to see just what the born-and-raised spacer was all about. For a micro-freighter of its size, the Lindy-Lou possessed a nearly unimaginable wealth of sensors, customized control mechanisms, and the latest in navigation technology. Jesse was in the middle of it all, sitting in a high-backed pilot's seat as he crunched numbers, focused on the task.

The sound of the door sliding open, however, caught his attention, and when he saw that Joseph had joined him in the cockpit, he nodded. Since the Lindy-Lou was a ship designed for four people, there were four seats in the cockpit, an empty one on either side of Jesse, and then a fourth off to the side, presumably for the ship's communication specialist.

"Welcome," Jesse said, and turned back to the terminal. Most intriguing of all, though, was the fact that unlike pretty much any ship Joseph might have seen or learned about, this one flew manual. Not just pilot-input manual, 100% manual control of all functions aboard the vessel. No automated flight computer, no auto-docking, nothing. The only thing that could amount to being automated was the warp drive.

''It has been a while since I have seen a whole manual controlled spaceship. She is a pretty one.'' Joseph said calmly. Unlike his sister who deep within liked nothing more then to tear things apart, he actually had a 'healthy' hobby which existed out of miniatures from various ships. Some as sculptures. Some as small constructive toys he had to paint and put together himself

Briia finished looking around and put her stuff into a trunk by the foot of the bed, that is all of her weapons. The tower shield would not fit in there, so she set it carefully beside the large trunk, the energetic glow from it shifting from a deep green to light green to a pale yellow-green as it was designed to deflect more than just physical attacks to her person. Her armor she kept on though, and closed the trunk with a firm click! before heading out.

Entering the main room with the cockpit, the Hatuni warrior took a seat next to Jesse, opposite from Joseph. She noted Rosalie was not there and concluded the girl must still be in their room. Looking at all the controls and everything the ship had to offer, Briia nodded in approval. "Nice ship you have here." she complimented.

"Thanks, the both of you. She's an old buzzard, but she's my darling."

He flicked on a few switches, and started turning a couple of dials. A dull hum started up, and the vibrations of the ship's engine could be felt as the old girl came alive.

"So, what do you two know about The Sepulcher?"

"Only that it appeared mysteriously in the Earth-Edanith solar system some time ago and that it is a conglomeration of many different spacecrafts all broken and mashed together into one giant structure." Briia explained.

"Researchers from my home planet have decreed that the ruins go quite deep, how deep though we are unsure. It is a perilous place, and is highly inadvisable to go in alone or ill-equipped. I'm sure we've all heard the rumors of things down there. What those things may be, I suppose we will soon find out. Traps are also said to lie within, deadly ones at that. In addition to serving as a mercenary and bodyguard for you, I am also tasked with looking for salvageable parts as well. One never knows what such a gold mine as that, dangerous as it is, might hold in order to make new and improved weapons and armor for my people's military. As well as anything else of use to help craft better spaceships."

The Hatuni woman looked at Jesse. "I suppose your reasons are somewhat similar to mine, being a scavenger and everything."

Location: Frigate-class Revenant Pride of Zachariah, in-transit between Andromeda galaxy and Sepulcher

"Our base camp will be near an outpost called Mathias's Last Stand. According to intel, it is as close to the interior of the Sepulcher as we can get while having a reliably defensible outpost.", Natasha explained, clicking the button to advance the screen to a rough map of the known area of the mass of ships, complete with the named locations marked, as well as shaded-in areas representing color-coded levels of known hazard, "Fireteam Chernobyl will go with the research team to act as security and muscle. Fireteam Hindenburg will remain on standby on board the Pride of Zachariah, pending the need for backup, and/or the disappearance of Fireteam Chernobyl.", the Lich continued, clicking the button agian, this time advancing to a roster of active and reserve members of each fireteam.

The audience of the briefing consisted of the five other primary members of Fireteam Chernobyl, the six primary members of Fireteam Hindenburg, and the six main members of the research team and their assistants.

"Our primary goal, ", Nicholas began as Natasha clicked the button yet again, this time to a list of objectives for the research team, "Is to find a path to the core of the Sepulcher, and transfer one of our Liches to it to convert the mass into a Dreadnaught- or perhaps even Super-Dreadnaught-class Revenant. Secondary goals include cataloging and analysing any technology, lifeforms, and artifacts we find that may be of use, mapping the Sepulcher, determining the origin of the Sepulcher, driving any salvagers who remain  out after the conversion, mapping useful weapons and other systems, and determining ways to upgrade and strengthen the Sepulcher. Any questions?", he asked. When none were asked, Nicholas continued, "Get some sleep, those of you who want or need it. We arrive at the Sepulcher in ten hours. Dismissed.".
