Bare and Broken Bones (Open!)

What was this? Bairi stood on the edge of a small cliff, looking over the dusty brown of the Wastelands. A forest of gnarled, dead, pale trees twisted obscenely over to the north-west, and to the south-west she could see a strip of dark brown that she knew to be the Darshon River, more toxic sludge than water, but still home to enough beasties that one wouldn't want to approach, let alone take a sample. Sadly, that knowledge came from experience. What really occupied her attention though, was directly ahead of her. A nest of bones, bleached by the sun, some shattered but none split for marrow, lay at the bottom of the cliff. And they were massive. One bone that looked like a leg bone was over a metre long, and as wide as her thigh. It wasn't one of the larger ones. She desperately wanted to examine them, to try to figure out what the creatures had looked like when they were still alive, but there was something odd about the whole situation.

A soft keening sound made her jump, automatically reaching for her staff, which was bound to her back. Staff in hands, she crouched and looked warily around, wondering what had possessed her to stand straight in such a visible place anyway. She was coated in dust, so her camouflage was brilliant, but flecks of red still showed in her hair, and there was no concealing her silhouette. A chill went through her as she noticed the source. Small pieces of bone, possibly vertebrae, with perfectly circular holes through them, were blown before the wind. It was the wind through these holes that was making the sound. The rattling of the other bones in the quickly growing wind was also frighteningly audible, treating Bairi symphony of bare and broken bones. Slowly, she put her staff back on her back, and crouched lower in the dirt.

She looked up. She examined the earth beneath her feet. She looked around. She could see no signs of anything untoward, so she decided that although caution was in order, the bones just had to be looked at. There was nothing wrong with a bit of creepy, right? Not in the face of science... This in mind, she started climbing down the cliff.
