Well...fudgemonkeys. [Jennyyyy!]
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:17:41 pm »
The first thing Gabriel was aware of was the feeling of cool concrete against his cheek.

The next was the nausea and a strange, feverish ache deep in his muscles.

He was still half-asleep when he had to lurch up onto his hands and knees and empty his stomach, and it several minutes before the retching turned to dry heaves and finally nothing, though the queasiness still lingered and a headache started to prod at his temples. Shit. That was exactly what he felt like. When he moved, his body ached, and when he finally peeled his eyes open he felt a jolt of panic as blackness filled his vision. It was another moment when he realized it was just the dark.

Another stroke of heart-pounding panic struck when he realized he didn't know where he was, didn't remember how he got here--and yet had the strongest, most unpleasant sense of deja vu about it all.

Gabriel wiped his mouth off with the back of his hand and held it there against another wave of nausea, swallowing hard. Think. Think. His brain was enveloped in fog, though, his thoughts coming to him as though from a great distance. Ahaha. He'd joked about it in the past, but now thinking really was hard. He took a deep breath, sitting back slowly on his heels, and was only when he started to calm down that things started coming back to him.

...Oh shit.

He'd gotten in a fight.

His hand flew to his arm where he remembered getting jabbed, and he found the area still tender. Shit. Shit.

Where the hell was that kid?

He tried to get to his feet but stumbled and sank back down, weak and dizzy from whatever the hell he'd been given and disoriented by the dark. "Rian...?"

His voice came out hoarse and he realized then that his mouth was dry. It took some effort to work moisture back onto his tongue. "Rian? You here?"

When Rian came to, his immediate thought was 'I'm going to be sick'.
He felt dizzy and nauseous, and the first thing he did- much like Gabriel- was spew the contents of his stomach. Following that he lost consciousness, drifting in and out of it with vague thoughts of what had happened and why, until he heard somebody calling his name out. He opened his eyes blearily, rolling onto his back slowly and feeling the cold concrete against his neck. He no longer felt ill, but he was groggy nonetheless. It was difficult to move his heavy limbs but he managed to reach up and rub his face. He blinked a few times, letting his arms drop. It was still pitch black in the... Room, or wherever he was.
Again-- 'Rian? You here?'

It was Gabriel. "I'm here," he called back. Rian pushed himself up and looked around, blinking a few more times in the hopes that his eyesight would start to adjust to the darkness. Remembering Gabriel being poisoned and hitting the floor, remembering the fight and what he'd seen... He felt guilty for dragging Gabriel into it. Still unaware that the other was a pilot, Rian was sure he'd just all but forced an unsuspecting citizen to join in his battle for justice. Though in actuality they had the same agenda, Rian was too ill and too groggy to form any logical thought that wasn't just the aching sense of guilt.

"Shit, dude, I'm sorry for dragging you into this," Rian grumbled, putting his face in his hands.

Gabriel relaxed a little when Rian answered. "Oh, good." That...was both good and bad. Bad because he was now stuck in what couldn't be a good situation, but good because this at least meant he was alive.

Still woozy and dizzy, Gabriel rose unsteadily and made his way toward Rian's voice; he could make out a vague outline of the kid the closer he got, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness, and settled back down near him.

"Hey, it's alright," he said, reaching out to lightly touch his shoulder--or what he hoped was his shoulder. Despite the bad situation, he felt strangely calm. He had to be. It was his default way of coping and he'd had to learn to be level-headed under fire as part of his training, anyway, though he'd learned a lot of that long before he'd even gotten that far in the regimen. There was always that first rush of fear, of panic, and the sickening sense of violation as he realized he'd been drugged and unconscious--but he shut down those feelings fast, erected that familiar emotional barrier, and focused instead on the here and now.

"Don't worry about it. Let's just focus, alright? One thing at a time. First thing's first: are you hurt?"

Rian lifted his head wearily when Gabriel came over and touched him on the shoulder. He turned his head in the direction of the other, only able to make out his face barely. Even though the other was trying to comfort him, Rian didn't feel much better at all. In fact, it only made things worse that Gabriel was being so nice about it- he deserved to be told off for getting anyone involved in his own problems. And this was definitely a problem.. They were trapped in a basement, or something. The chance of them making it out.. Slim. But that wasn't to say Rian was giving up.

"I'm not hurt," he responded, running a hand through his hair. "Are you?" he asked in turn, though his mind was already on trying to figure a way out. They had to get out. There was no way he was dying over some drug cartel shit. Hell, there was no way he was letting them get away with what they were doing.

"Nah, I'm fine," Gabriel answered with a weak grin, though he wasn't sure Rian could see it in the darkness. "Been in worse scraps. This isn't so bad."

Alright, so it was bad, but the fact of the matter was that they were both alive. These people had taken them for some reason to who-knows-where and they wanted them alive for who-knows-why. Not for anything good, that was for sure; it never was. They probably wanted to ask them some questions, find out if anyone else knew, and then silence them, permanently, in a nice secluded location.

He didn't voice any of that to Rian.

Head still foggy, he gingerly reached for his telepathy and extended his mind outward, but it felt clumsy, weak, like trying to perform some sort of delicate brain surgery with fat, swollen fingers and shaky hands. Whatever they'd given him, it was wreaking havoc with everything, mind and body--but at the very least he was able to get a sense that they were currently alone.

"First thing's first, we should figure out where we are. Think you can stand?"

Rian smiled a little weakly as Gabriel assured him that he was okay, feeling a bit of relief settle in and effectively soothing his own mood. And Gabriel's following words were a greater help yet. Rian didn't know Gabriel well, didn't know if this was the first time he had been involved in something like this or not, and it was good to know that the other wasn't terrified or surprised, but had the heart to say that worse had happened. It also felt good to be matched up with someone that had a similar spirit. Rian was not easily taken down, either, and at the question about standing, he did so readily.

He reached out a hand for Gabriel to help him up, able to see much better now. "I'm good," he assured the other. "It seems like we're in a basement or something," he added, looking around. There were crates and such scattered around, and the smell of mold was distinct. To top that off, it was pretty mercilessly cold. Considering the lack of heating, Rian wondered if they were in an abandoned building of some sort, but more important he found himself turning about and scanning the walls for a door or window. There was a vent, and one door. "We're getting out of here," Rian said firmly, a smile settling on his face. It was clear that Rian had regained his energy, though he still felt a little groggy and dizzy from the drugs, that did nothing to quell his endless fountain of confidence. "I wonder what they want with us, though," he added. They should have killed them, really.

Taking Rian's hand, Gabriel hauled himself to his feet and brushed dust off his clothes, taking a moment to steady himself after. He was feeling better now that his stomach was empty though it would likely take longer for all the effects to wear off.

"Nothing good," Gabriel answered. "Probably information or something. Or maybe even they haven't figured it out yet. Could be you're just a good hostage, too. Didn't you say your friend was involved?"

Er, well, either Rian had said that or he'd picked it up from his thoughts and had, in his drugged haze, blurred the line between what was spoken and what was thought. He couldn't really remember. Not that it mattered. Now that shit had gotten real, playing pretend wasn't much of an option. At this point, it just felt kind of weird going 'oh hey by the way, I'm a Pilot.'

Looking around the area, Gabriel ignored the door and instead went for the vent, pausing to stand beneath it. It was small and there was no telling where it lead, but they might be able to squeeze through--if they could reach it and get it open. "Of course, we're not giving them a chance to go all inquisition on our butts. C'mere! If I boost ya, think you can test the grate?"

Rian was smaller, after all! And until his psionics were less out of whack, they'd just have to do this the old fashioned way.

Rian nodded absently as Gabriel spoke, his mind considering the theories and mostly agreeing with them, though he had a few ideas of his own. At the mention of his friend, he looked up immediately. "Traxx," he confirmed his name, following it with a sigh. Could it be they'd found him and were holding him hostage, too? No, more likely, they were keeping him to find out where Traxx was. "One of the guys-" he choked a little on his words, recalling with precise detail the blue-haired punk's throat being slit right in front of him. This gang was ruthless, that much was certain. He swallowed down a mixture of nause and guilt and kept speaking. "One of the guys said Traxx owed him something."

As Gabriel turned his attention to the vent, Rian stood behind and watched, arms crossed. He looked up, evaluating the size and height of the vent as Gabriel stood beneath it. It didn't seem impossible, at least. At the suggestion to test the vent, Rian nodded and walked over, joining him. "I don't know if I'll fit," he commented. Little dog playing big dog, as usual.

Gabriel frowned up at the vent and let his shoulders slouch. "Yeah, probably not," he relented with a sigh. "It looks pretty tight." And he could tell just from looking that he wouldn't fit and how awkward would that be, getting stuck in a vent? But it was worth mentioning.

That left the door. It would be locked of course, but they were lacking in options. May as well check it out.

He started to head toward it and was proud that he only wobbled a little, slowly regaining equilibrium.

"So, Traxx, huh? Jeez. He must've owed them something big, all things considered...you okay, by the way?" Gabriel asked, pausing to look back at Rian. He'd sounded kind of choked up there for a minute--not that he could really blame him, this was scary to him (and yay for the added dose of claustrophobia!) and he was trained for crap like this! Never mind being just a civilian.

Rian mirrored Gabriel's frown but nodded as they came to an agreement. The vent wouldn't work, and if it did for him, it most likely still wouldn't work for the other. It was a tight space. And where would it lead? The vents were just too risky of an idea, though as a last resort, maybe Rian could go through them and then bust Gabriel out. He was focusing on the half-baked idea when Gabriel mentioned Traxx, also asking him if he was okay. Rian nodded once, a curt nod. He didn't know how okay he was, exactly. Maybe he wasn't so okay. Maybe he was in denial of what he'd seen.

But regardless, he wasn't going to start crying or anything. He had dealt with things like this before. "I'm okay," he replied with a small smile. "Like I said, I get into stuff like this a lot. But.. Yeah, Traxx was always involved in drugs. I always knew he dropped a ton of cash on the newer and rarer stuff, but I didn't know he was getting anything illegal. I figured, you know.. Like anyone else, he got his fix the easy way." Rian hummed thoughtfully, reflecting on his own words. Something stood out to him. Newer. Rarer.

"What if these guys aren't just involved in selling and dealing... What if they're developing drugs or something? New drugs, stronger ones. Dangerous."

Gabriel grimaced, because even with his mind still funky, Rian's words rang true--and not only that, but it all added up. It all added up with what he'd experienced not all that long ago. Someone had drugged he and his friend, two Pilots. Someone was targeting them--Pilots--specifically. Were they connected with the Gospels? Who knows. But there had to be a reason they were going for drugging as opposed to assassinations.

They were testing something. Maybe.

Oh, shit. He had a good idea he knew what, too, considering his current symptoms--the block on his psionics--and the irony turned his grimace into a wry grin. He doubted these fools knew he was a Pilot since they'd hit Rian with the same stuff, likely just as a precaution, but still. Jeez.

Wow. Thanks a lot, guys. Guess we know it works, now.

"Yeah...that sounds likely," he said. "Doesn't seem like they'd be this hardcore over some simple party drugs--but we should probably think about that later, after we get outta here."

Turning back to the door, he took a deep breath. It looked solid; probably no way he'd be able to kick it open, especially not feeling as he did not. Dammit. He needed more time but didn't know how much they had. Either way, they couldn't afford to waste any of it.

"Alright. Just hang tight one sec, alright? I'm gonna try something."

Instead of trying to brute-force it (which was his typical style) he put his hands flat on the door, closed his eyes, and summoned whatever meager strands of telekinesis he could muster up. It wasn't much, the threads weak and feeble--but wasn't Roman among the weakest Pilots when it came to this? He tried to channel his mentor, tried to call upon his lessons. He'd done this once before, only it had been on a brain, not a door, and it had been to soothe a migraine as opposed to fiddling with a lock's mechanism. But he had to try. His head started to ache as he worked, sweat beading on his brow with the effort, and he tried to picture the path those threads traveled, tried to picture the mechanism and how it functioned, where its trigger was. If he did this right--and did it before his focus broke or he started dry-heaving from the inevitable migraine--then he might be able to get them out of there.

Rian was hard pressed to say whether it was a good or bad thing that Gabriel agreed with his theory. In a way, he wanted to be wrong. He wanted Gabriel to tell him he was an idiot, and to shut up and get in the vent. It would have pissed him off, yes, but this... Whatever this was, it was a terrible thing, and it was frightening. A powerful drug syndicate like this with the weapons and means to carry out their agenda could get out of hand quickly, and harm many people to boot. It was impossible to know who would be next, or even why. As of right now, they couldn't even fathom what the motive or the end goal was, and that meant they were faced with a huge and terrifying mystery. There was no fighting it, either. Rian knew it- they'd tried and been captured. Now they had to escape, or they would probably die. So what was next? Before Rian even finished the thought process, he was asking himself what he could do. It was hard to admit, but he knew it was unlikely anything he did could stop this.

Trying to shake off his own depressing and pessimistic thoughts, Rian turned his attention to Gabriel, who was attempting to.. Open the door? Except, he didn't appear to be doing anything at all. Rian watched carefully before it came to him-- He'd seen this look of concentrated effort before.. On one of his sister's faces, whenever she tried to use her psychic powers. Was Gabriel psychic? Rian was surprised the other hadn't bought it up, though there was probably no appropriate time for such a comment.

"You're a psychic?" he asked after a long moment's thought, assuming that Gabriel wouldn't be able to open the door. "Did the drug they used.. Did it affect your psionics?"

It wasn't any good. He could see the mechanism, feel it, but the threads were too weak to manipulate it. He needed more force to be able to actually do more than examine it; the threads kept slipping off uselessly, didn't even budge it a centimeter.

Trying to keep his frustration at bay, Gabriel kept on working at it, willing it to work--but then Rian spoke up and his concentration broke.

Probably for the better; his head had started to hurt, the throb turning into sharper pain that made his stomach twist nauseously. With the connection broken, the pain began to fade, but he hadn't worked on it long; longer, and he may have wound up triggering a migraine, and then what good would he be to anyone?

Seemed like 'patience' was the word of the day.

He hated that word.

Eyes closed and fingers massaging his temples, he let out a shaky breath and nodded slowly. "Err...yeah. Heh. To both questions," he said with a sheepish grin, and then cracked an eye open. Well, may as well come clean all the way while they were on the topic.

It felt weird keeping it secret, because it wasn't some deep, dark thing, but it was also equally weird to just randomly disclose, 'hey, just so you know, I'm a Pilot!' like it was some sort of STD that people needed to be warned of.

Maybe it didn't need to be weird, but damn, he'd spent most of his life around other Pilots and had forgotten how to act around civvies, and he knew some people got weird about the whole Pilot thing. Which was understandable. Back before he knew what he was, the idea that there were people out there who could read your mind was an uncomfortable one, to put it lightly. Pilots made friends with other Pilots for that reason, because you were equals in all respects, and the mind was private. You couldn't really relate to civilians, because no matter what you did, there was a power imbalance, and they didn't understand that there were actual rules of etiquette in place--not to mention that you didn't even want to dig into peoples' heads without reason, not just because telepathy didn't replace actual conversation but also because it was a gross and invasive violation.

He'd had it done to him; it was horrible. He sure as hell didn't take it lightly.

"Okay, so..." Gabriel scratched the back of his neck. "Alright, maybe I'm not just a psychic. I'm actually kind of a big deal. Y'know, being a Pilot and all." A pause. "Don't freak out?"

Yeah, subtlety was definitely not his thing.
